  • SMEDAN awards certificates to 116 business development service providers

Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has awarded practising licences to 116 qualified Business Development Service Providers (BDSPs).

Charles Odii, director-general of SMEDAN, made this announcement during the BDSP licencing award ceremony organised by the agency on Wednesday in Lagos.

Mr Odii stated that the practising licences would allow BDSPs to provide quality service delivery to micro, small, and medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country.

The BDSPs’ certification was a collaboration with the Kaduna Business School and the Enterprise Development Centre, Pan Atlantic University.

BDSPs are Nigerians from the entrepreneurial ecosystem across the country who have met the requirements to practice their profession in a particular jurisdiction. This typically involves completing a certain amount of education and training, passing an exam, and maintaining good moral standing.

Mr Odii said, “Today is a very significant day for us at the agency because we have awarded licenses to business development service providers, which is vital in response to the challenges faced by small businesses in Nigeria.

“Many of them encounter various problems, similar to how doctors are needed to attend to sick patients. A number of certified individuals have undergone a rigorous training process at the Enterprise Development Centre and Kaduna Business School. They have obtained certification, and their licences now make them our eyes and ears all over Nigeria.

“Their current role is to enter the market and help small businesses thrive.”

The SMEDAN boss also highlighted that one of the biggest problems faced by small businesses in Nigeria is the lack of a proper business structure, which has hindered their access to funding.

“In an effort to ensure credible access to more affordable finance for MSMEs in Nigeria, the agency is partnering with an NGO, The African Centre for Global Entrepreneurial Leadership.

“This is to implement the Leadership Entrepreneurial Game Show, where successful participants will be awarded N5 million worth of grants and tools.

“The game show is ongoing, and all existing and potential entrepreneurs are encouraged to register at www.legs.afrca,” he said.

Mr Odii hinted that the agency was partnering with selected banks to implement the matching fund programme for MSMEs to increase access to finance.

This intervention, he said, delivers credit as a promotional mechanism to enhance enterprise output, competitiveness, and job creation.

According to him, prospective beneficiaries can have access to loans ranging from N500 million to N2.5 million.

Mr Odii urged all suitable qualified MSMEs in the agribusiness sub-sector to apply through the SMEDAN website www.smedan.gov.ng.

Dahiru Sani, Rector of Kaduna Business School, said that the primary responsibility of the BDSPs would be to support MSMEs in terms of how they would respond to the recent policy issues’ shocks.

Mr Sani, also a member of the national steering committee for the accreditation and certification of BDSPs in Nigeria, said, “Our expectations now are that they are going to provide us with what we call a buffer or mechanical shock absorber for the MSMEs.

“They will survey their ecosystem, identify the challenges faced, and determine the kind of interventions required. Sometimes it’s financial, emotional resilience, technology support, access to markets, and the quality of people within the system.

“Sometimes it involves shifting the market’s focus from Nigeria to outside the country or creating a broader portfolio where earnings can be in different currencies,” Mr Sani said.

  • Tuberville says he has received ‘more than a dozen’ death threats

Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville Monday said he’s received more than a dozen death threats during his time in the Senate, with four people receiving jail time.

Tuberville appeared Monday as a guest on “The Kimberly Guilfoyle Show,” streaming on Rumble. In an eight-minute interview, Tuberville commented on several subjects, in addition to throwing his support behind Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan in the House speaker’s race, calling Jordan a “fighter.”

Here’s a few of the subjects the interview touched on:

Michael Hayden controversy: Tuberville called former CIA Director Michael Hayden “a total loser” a week after he reported Hayden’s suggestion that he be removed from the “human race” to Capitol Police, claiming the remark called for his assassination.

“What a jerk this guy is,” Tuberville said. “Not that I’m anything special, but I am a United States Senator. I’ve had more than a dozen death threats since I’ve been here- four of them are in jail, by the way.”

Hayden said last week that he didn’t literally mean “removed” from the human race and is surprised anyone thought he did.

“As dangerous as this job is, in this day and time, this guy has no business saying anything about anybody because he is a total loser from day one,” Tuberville said.

Military promotions hold: Tuberville said he “didn’t really want to do” his ongoing hold in the Senate on more than 300 promotions in protest to the Pentagon’s abortion policy. However, he said he is “not backing down” on the blockade until a vote is held on the policy change.

Tuberville began the block after the Pentagon announced it would allow troops and dependents to take time off and use official travel to get to other states for reproductive care not available locally. Tuberville says the policy should have a vote on the Senate floor.

“They are now playing dictator from the White House,” Tuberville said. “It’s communism from the White House and the Pentagon. They just totally changed the policy – ‘This is the way we’re going to do it. We don’t care what you say. We’re not going to give the people of Alabama or any other state the opportunity to vote on this in the Senate.’”

Later in the interview, Tuberville seemed to suggest he might lift the hold if Congress took action on the U.S.’s southern border.

“These Democrats will come up to me and go, ‘You need to drop your hold on all these generals and admirals.’ And I’ll go, ‘You close that border down there, and I’ll think about it.’”

Israel-Hamas conflict: Tuberville said the ongoing fight between Israel and Hamas is a “disaster of what’s going on, and it’s all caused by Joe Biden.”

He based the allegation on a deal between Washington and Tehran that led to the release of five imprisoned Americans from Iran last month, and on oil prices, which he said emboldened Iran, and has “enhanced all these terrorists.”

He said Biden sending two carrier strike groups to the region will “get us in a world war.”

“We’ve got an empty White House,” Tuberville said. “When President Trump left the White House, if we would have just left it empty, we would have been so much better, just in our country with the border, inflation, fossil fuels.”

Guilfoyle introduced the former Auburn coach as “the greatest coach of all time,” drawing a response on the social media platform X from Chris England, Alabama House Dist. 70 representative from Tuscaloosa.

  • Tinubu Approves Commencement Of Academic Activities In 6 Varsities Established Under Buhari’s Administration

    Bola-Tinubu-

President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of academic activities at six out of the 14 new universities established during President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, disclosed this on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting with President Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

He said the government has decided to stagger their implementation with a focus on six of the Institutions in agriculture, education and medicine.

“We’re starting with about six, two each of agriculture, colleges of education and medicine,” he said.

He added that the President’s decision stems from the fact that the take-off of the universities require funding, adding that it will not be prudent to start up all the institutions at once.

“ Honestly there are very many, probably about a dozen of them, if not more than a dozen or 14. That’s the number and you know tertiary institutions are highly capital intensive, they need a lot of money, especially at that takeoff stage, for infrastructure, staff recruitment and all other needs.

“So by the time you want to start off about 12, 14 institutions at once, it is a very heavy burden on the finances of the government. So, that’s why,” he said.

He said the government did not step down the approval of the remaining institutions because most of them are specialized institutions; colleges of education, agriculture, medicine are institutions that will support some of the mandates and priority areas of the government.

“We will have a need for trained teachers which colleges of education will provide and the same thing with agriculture.

“So, that’s why the government has not stepped down that approval. Instead, the president in his wisdom said we stagger their implementation on the grounds of funds, essentially,” he said.

The minister stated the Tinubu administration plans to be conservative about the pace of development of tertiary institutions and explained that its priority is on institutions that provide skills that enable its graduates to stand on their own.

He also revealed that President Tinubu has given the go-ahead to complete the abandoned multi billion-naira National Library Complex in Abuja as an important educational institution for the nation.

The minister noted that all relevant stakeholders including the government, the consultants and the contractors involved will work together to review the project to determine what is left to be done and the cost.

  • Ministry claims 470 killed in Gaza hospital blast

The Gaza health ministry said on Wednesday that 471 Palestinians were killed in the devastating blast at a hospital in the Strip.

In its first official figures since the exploration late on Tuesday, the ministry added that another 324 people were injured in the incident.

Hundreds of people were reportedly killed and injured when an airstrike struck al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday.

At least 28 people are said to be in critical condition.

It was not possible to independently verify the figures.

Israel, which has been pounding Gaza with retaliatory airstrikes since Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack on Israel border communities on October 7, however, denied it attacked the hospital.

Israel claimed that a misguided missile by the Palestinian group, Islamic Jihad, was responsible for the blast and provided evidence to back up its claim.

  • UN envoy calls for inquiry into hospital strike

UN Middle East envoy, Tor Wennesland on Wednesday, called for an inquiry into the strike against a Gaza hospital that killed hundreds, including patients, staff and displaced people seeking shelter.

Mr Wennesland made the call while briefing the Security Council in New York on the crisis in the Middle East.

He told the Security Council that he “watched in horror and in real-time” as reports of mass casualties emerged from Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday.

“The circumstances of this catastrophe and responsibility remain and still need to be clarified. And we will need a fact-based, full investigation and broad investigation,” he said, speaking from Doha.

Mr Wennesland, officially UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, updated the Council on his efforts to end the current hostilities, which he called one of the most difficult moments facing Israelis and Palestinians in 75 years.

The envoy unequivocally condemned the Hamas militant group’s deadly attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, and the seizing of hostages, saying there was no justification for these acts.

“I fear that we are at the brink of a deep and dangerous abyss that could change the trajectory of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, if not of the Middle East as a whole.

“After more than a century of conflict and over half a century of occupation, the international community had failed to bring the parties to a just, sustainable political resolution.

“The recent events have served to re-ignite grievances and re-animate alliances across the region.

“The risk of an expansion of this conflict is real – very, very real – and extremely dangerous,” he warned.

He said he had been working to avert this threat and that the UN Secretary-General had been in constant communication with both the parties and regional and international actors “who have agency and influence.”

The envoy is expected to return to Cairo on Thursday to join the Secretary-General in continuing these discussions, and he also welcomed the Egyptian President’s swift convening of a summit of world leaders to discuss the crisis.

“With the parties on the ground in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Ramallah, my message has remained steadfast, that we must not let the dynamic of the current conflict take our eyes off what I will call the day after.

Mr Wennesland stressed the need for time and space to achieve two urgent objectives, namely Hamas’s immediate, unconditional release of all hostages, and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid in Gaza.

He further appealed for collective efforts to end the hostilities and prevent any further expansion of the conflict to the region.

“Regarding West Bank and Lebanon, there should be no miscalculation, no provocation and no step that closes the door to our current efforts,” he said.

The envoy also underlined the ultimate need to work towards a long-term political solution, in line with UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements.

UN humanitarian coordinator, Martin Griffiths, supported the call for a fact-based inquiry into the deadly blast at Al-Ahli Hospital, noting it had also been hit last week.

“This tragedy is characteristic of the crushing impact this conflict has had on civilians and…the catastrophic consequences it will have if it continues to escalate, as we fear,” he said, speaking from Cairo.

The UN relief chief detailed the damage the already beleaguered Gaza health system has sustained in the conflict. Since Oct. 7, 28 health workers have reportedly been killed and 23 injured.

Health services are overstretched and on the verge of collapse, meeting the needs of the rising number of wounded patients in the face of ever-deepening shortages of fuel, medicines and supplies.

Overall, more than 3,000 people in Gaza have been killed, including 14 staff members from the UN agency that assists Palestine refugees, UNRWA.

More than 12,000 people are injured and hundreds more are unaccounted for.

Mr Griffiths reported that the death toll had already exceeded that of the 2017 hostilities which lasted more than seven weeks.

“The pace of death, of suffering, of destruction, of breaches of international law, cannot be exaggerated,” he said.

Meanwhile, one million Palestinians have escaped their homes with nowhere to go, and as supplies of food, water, fuel and medical items dwindle.

UNRWA has been forced to ration water to one litre per person per day, far less than the minimum standard of 15 litres.

The UN’s top humanitarian official highlighted the critical need for aid to be delivered safely to civilians throughout Gaza, and for funding to support these operations.

He said UNRWA, the Red Crescent, and other agencies had staff and many volunteers who were still on the ground and ready to assist.

“What we don’t have – and it’s a killer, and what we desperately need – is immediate safe humanitarian access. And that is the burden of our discussions with key parties,” he added.

Mr Griffiths reported that prior to “these terrible weeks,” 100 trucks a day delivered aid throughout Gaza and “we need to get back to that level of ambition.”

  • Pro-Palestine protesters storm Congressional building

Pro-Palestine protesters stormed and occupied the Cannon House Office Building rotunda on Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon, video of the demonstration shows. The group held a sit-in with signs demanding Congress officially call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“There’s an insurrection happening now on Capitol Hill,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted on X – formerly Twitter – along with video of the scene.

The demand for a “ceasefire” in Gaza comes after Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, killing 1,300 people – mainly civilians – and wounding thousands more. Israel formally declared war against Hamas shortly after the deadly terrorist attacks.

While Israeli officials have repeatedly urged civilians in Gaza to leave, Hamas is known for using civilians as human shields and started broadcasting messages in the Gaza Strip telling residents to stay, Reuters reported.

According to a NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence report, Hamas has been using human shields in conflicts with Israel since at least 2007.

“The strategic logic of human shields has two components. It is based on an awareness of Israel’s desire to minimise collateral damage, and of Western public opinion’s sensitivity towards civilian casualties,” the report continues. “If the IDF uses lethal force and causes an increase in civilian casualties, Hamas can utilise that as a lawfare tool: it can accuse Israel of committing war crimes, which could result in the imposition of a wide array of sanctions,” the report states.

Jewish Voice for Peace, a group that describes itself as “Jews organizing toward Palestinian liberation and Judaism beyond Zionism,” also posted video of the demonstration, writing on X, “HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds of American Jews are holding a sit-in at Congress — and we won’t leave until Congress calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. As thousands of U.S. Jews protest outside, over 350 are inside, including two dozen rabbis, holding prayerful resistance.”

This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.

  • After Supplying Israel With Weapons, Biden Approves $100m Aid To Gaza, West Bank

United States President, Joe Biden, Wednesday, announced $100 million humanitarian assistance for Gaza and the West Bank, a Palestine exclave, in view of the unsavory developments associated with the ongoing war between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hamas militants and Hezbollah of Lebanon.

The announcement via the president’s X page, comes days after the US government through its defense department, approved the transfer of first missiles for the Iron Dome air-defence to Israel, which is to be used by the Israeli military to intercept Hamas rockets.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, had confirmed the military aid to Israel in the wake of the infiltration of Hamas militants into Southern Israel.

On Saturday, the U.S. also made the second deployment of military ships and warplanes to the Mediterranean sea to forestall countries that may want to get involved in the Israeli war against Hamas.

Biden, who is already on a diplomatic visit to Israel and Jordan, stated that the financial aid to Palestine is aimed at supporting the displaced.

“This money will support over 1 million displaced and conflict-affected Palestinians.

“And we will have mechanisms in place so this aid reaches those in need – not Hamas or terrorist groups,” Biden tweeted.

Earlier, Biden and his team touched down in Israel, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and expressed solidarity with the Israeli people following Hamas’s terrorist attack.

The ongoing war between IDF and Hamas and Hezbollah has resulted in the death of thousands on the sides of Israel and Palestine, nearing 5,000 including children.

Israel has vowed that its military offensive will continue for as long as possible until the Hamas infrastructure is destroyed and its leaders taken down.

On the part of Hamas, it maintained that the escalation will continue so long as Israel occupies Jerusalem.

The conflict remained furious as an explosion blew up the Al Ahli Arab hospital in Gaza on Tuesday, leading to more loss of lives.

The attack on the hospital was condemned by Joe Biden who directed “my national security team to continue gathering information about what exactly happened.”

The United States maintains that the protection of civilian lives during the conflict must be observed by relevant stakeholders.
