  • Israel agrees to allow aid into Gaza via Egypt

Israel has agreed to allow Egypt deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in what analysts say is the first crack in a “punishing 10-day siege” on the Hamas-controlled territory.

The announcement which was made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, is coming a day after devastating air strikes at the Gaza City’s al-Ahli Hospital where over 500 people were killed.

It also came after an extensive meeting with visiting U.S. President Joe Biden who gave his tacit support to Israel on its fight against the Hamas militants.

A statement from Netanyahu’s office said only “food, water and medicine” would be allowed into the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

Before the announcement, Israel had shut off all supplies to Gaza after Hamas militants attacked communities in southern Israel on October 7 which elicited retaliatory attacks by Israeli forces.

While Israel said it would allow for aid to pass through Egypt, it maintained that supplies would not come from its own territory until Hamas releases the dozens of hostages it took.

“Israel demands Red Cross visits with our captives and is working to mobilise broad international support for this demand,” the statement added.

The federal government on Thursday announced the closure of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos starting from midnight of Saturday, October 21, to midnight of Sunday, October 22, to carry out repairs.

She advised motorists to cooperate with traffic management officials by obeying and observing all diversions for seamless movement.

“However, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible during the period of the palliative works as the Adeniji bound of the bridge will be closed to traffic from Saturday, October 21 to Sunday, 22nd, 12:00 midnight,” she said.

  • Red state orders Chinese company to sell US farmland

In an unprecedented move that mirrors a broader national trend, Arkansas has ordered a Chinese-owned subsidiary to relinquish ownership of 160 acres of agricultural land, marking the first enforcement action under a flurry of new state laws designed to curb foreign control over domestic farmland.

The ruling in Arkansas underscores the ongoing debate surrounding foreign land ownership and its implications for national security and economic interests.

According to The Associated Press, Attorney General Tim Griffin declared that Northrup King Seed Co., a subsidiary of China’s Syngenta Seeds, which is under the ownership umbrella of the state-owned China National Chemical Company (ChemChina), has been given a two-year window to divest its Craighead County property.

The legislation, championed by the Republican-majority Legislature and endorsed by GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is a testament to Arkansas’s commitment to its local constituents.

“We will make sure that every company operating in Arkansas is a friend to Arkansas and good to hard-working Arkansans,” Sanders emphasized during a press briefing.

“Seeds are technology,” the Arkansas governor added. “Chinese state-owned corporations filter that technology back to their homeland, stealing American research and telling our enemies how to target American farms.”

Syngenta, however, expressed its discontent to The Associated Press regarding the state’s resolution, stressing that since acquiring the land in 1988, no directives to purchase, lease, or engage in land transactions had come from its Chinese parent company.

“Our people in Arkansas are Americans led by Americans who care deeply about serving Arkansas farmers,” the company stated. “This action hurts Arkansas farmers more than anyone else.”

Before this year, only 14 states had imposed restrictions on foreign ownership of private farmland, a number that has now surged to 24 states, according to The National Agriculture Law Center at the University of Arkansas.

Micah Brown, a staff attorney at the center, noted many of the laws on investments from foreign nations are focused on countries such as China, Iran, North Korea and Russia.

“Historically, states that had a law before this year, there wasn’t much enforcement,” Brown said.

According to Brown, the recent uptick in legislative actions restricting foreign land ownership has been attributed, in part, to high-profile incidents involving Chinese-affiliated purchases near U.S. military bases, along with concerns arising from a suspected Chinese spy balloon traversing U.S. airspace earlier this year.

In addition to the divestiture order, Arkansas slapped Syngenta with a $280,000 fine for neglecting to report its foreign ownership, a mandate established by a state law passed in 2021.

Although Griffin displayed confidence in Syngenta’s compliance with both the divestiture and the fine, he refrained from detailing any direct interactions with the company, according to The Associated Press.

  • Court jails man for scamming mother-in-law with marriage to former President Buhari

One Ganbo Adamu has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for scamming his mother-in-law, Sa’adatu Aliyu with marriage to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adamu, who was sentenced by a Magistrate’s Court in Minna, the Niger State capital, was said to have also extorted the sum of N5 million naira from the mother-in-law, a divorcee with a promise to connect her with President Buhari for a marital relationship.

The woman told the court that her son-in-law presented to her the sum of N100,000 as pride price, a basket of kola nuts and fried chicken in a bag as gifts from President Buhari during the wedding fatiha.

According to her, after waiting to see the former president coming to pick her as his new wife, she decided to approach the court for intervention.

  • NURTW caretaker committee passes vote of no confidence in Baruwa

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) caretaker committee has passed a vote of no confidence in ex-NURTW president Tajudeen Baruwa. Tajudeen Agbede, the NURTW national chairman of the caretaker committee, said this while speaking at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mr Baruwa’s tenure as the president of NURTW expired on August 28.

“We, the undersigned, having the mandate of our members in the various states and zones, unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa,” the committee stated.

Mr Agbede alleged that Mr Baruwa had committed many atrocities while serving as union president from August 2019 to August 2023, claiming that Mr Baruwa had reduced union membership in the International Transport Federation (ITF) from 400,000 members to 160,000 members.

Mr Agbede also noted the former president failed or neglected to pay affiliation dues as and when due, thus causing the union to be deregistered from ITF.

He, however, noted that sundry letters received from NLC during Mr Baruwa’s administration were various demands for payment of affiliation dues. Mr Agbede added that the dues, at one point, were owed for as long as 18 months (April to December 2021) and January to September 2022.

Mr Agbede said Mr Baruwa failed or neglected to account for the Independent National Electoral Commission money paid during his administration for the 2023 general election. He also noted that during the four-year administration of the union’s former president, the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting was only held four times.

He said this was against the constitutional provisions of Article 10 (2) of the union’s constitution.

Mr Agbede also accused Mr Baruwa of arbitrarily mandating the posting of union staff without concomitant relocation allowances or transfer claims, among others. He added that caused unnecessary hardship and adversity to staff.

“He failed to abide by constitutional provisions in respect to succession by refusing and/or neglecting to conduct a credible zonal delegates’ election for the continuity of the union. Thus putting the union into unnecessary drama before right-thinking members of the public,” he added.

Mr Baruwa was elected NURTW president for a second four-year term on August 25.

  • INEC Rigged Enugu Governorship Election, Declared Peter Mbah Winner – Labour Party Alleges

The Labour Party has explained how the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, allegedly rigged the March 18 governorship election in Enugu State in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Peter Mbah.

Addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja over the Nasarawa and Enugu governorship tribunal judgments, and Nkanu East State Constituency tribunal judgment, the party said the three cases presented similar facts but the tribunal judgements were different.

In the text of the press conference delivered by Obiora Ifoh, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, the party said, “The Labour Party candidate, Hon. Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, was cruising to victory with the results of the election declared in 16 out of 17 LGAs of the state when the PDP colluded with INEC to manufacture 30,000 + votes for Mbah in the remaining Nkanu East LGA, even when only about 15,000 voters were accredited to vote in that home LGA of Mbah.

“The INEC returning officer for the state, Prof Maduebibisi Iwe, rejected the figures from Nkanu East because the BVAS was discarded, prompting the INEC headquarters to invite him to Abuja.

“After three days, an Abuja INEC panel led by Festus Okoye reduced the total 33,000+ votes illegally hurled from Nkanu East alone to about 19,000, but gave Mbah almost 17,000 votes to enable him to beat LP’s Edeoga (who was leading with 11,000+ votes) with 3,000+ votes,” he stated.

He explained that it was “over-voting in Nkanu East LGA, especially in Owo and Ugbawka, that prompted the Labour Party and its candidate, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, to approach the Tribunal in the hope that the judiciary will review and correct that anomaly.”

Ifoh said, “Enugu State is a Labour Party State and we make bold to say that the Labour Party’s candidate, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, clearly won the March 18 governorship election held in Enugu. This claim is justified by the outcome of all the other elections held in the State between February and March this year.

“The Labour Party won 2 out of the 3 senatorial seats in the State; 7 out of the 8 Rep seats in the State and 14 out of the 24 seats in the State House of Assembly,” he added.

He explained that the Enugu State Governorship Election Tribunal on Saturday, 21st September 2023 “shockingly delivered a judgment on the disputed election that appeared to have ignored the facts in issue.

“The judgment fell short of the expectations of both the majority of Nigerians and legal pundits who have continued to criticise the fundamental logic and the premise upon which the decision was reached,” he said.

He lamented, “With the recent judgment of the Governorship Election Tribunal in Nasarawa State and the Nkanu East State Constituency Tribunal judgment, the Labour Party is forced to revisit the travesty of justice that took place in the Enugu governorship tribunal judgment, especially given that the three situations presented similar facts, yet different pronouncements were made by the judiciary.”

Recall that the Enugu Governorship Election Tribunal rejected the testimonies of the partitioners’ material witnesses who testified that there was manifest over-voting in Owo and Ugbawka.

The tribunal held that the witnesses were not accredited witnesses of the Party. Iroh said “The tribunal erred in that regard because the law has always been that every voter in Nigeria is an eligible witness before a tribunal, more so when the said witnesses were members of the Labour Party.

“Two, as already established in Torti Vs Ukpabi, it has long been a settled issue that what determines the admissibility of evidence is its relevance.”

He said the Enugu tribunal judgement can be compared to the judgement delivered in Nasarawa, where the tribunal sacked the APC candidate and declared the candidate of the PDP as the winner.

The Labour Party spokesman said “the Governorship Tribunal in Nasarawa rightly admitted the testimonies of the material witnesses who came to testify that the votes of the PDP in Ashigie Ward, Chiroma Ward, etc were wrongly suppressed and thereafter ordered the restoration of the said votes to the PDP, even when the witnesses therein were not accredited witnesses of the PDP.

“Second, the Tribunal in Enugu jettisoned the provisions of Section 137 of the Electoral Act, 2022 which provides that where there is original or certified true copy of a document before the court or tribunal that can establish non-compliance and it is shown that the said non-compliance is manifest on the face of that document, parties are not required to adduce oral evidence.

“The Enugu Tribunal strangely feigned ignorance of the above provisions of Section 137 of the Electoral Act and the mischief it seeks to cure by insisting on the needless and additional requirement of calling of oral witnesses to prove over-voting in Uwo and Ugbawka, even when the Labour Party already filed copious INEC certified true copies of the BVAS Accreditation Reports that evidently proved the case of the Petitioner.

“Again, in juxtaposition with the judgment delivered in the case of Nasarawa, the Tribunal in Nasarawa, in line with the provisions of Section 137 of the Electoral Act, 2022, rightly relied on the documentary evidence contained in the certified true copies of the print out of the BVAS Accreditation Reports to cancel the votes in Gadagwa Ward, Nasarawa Eggon Ward, Shege Ward, Sabon Gari and in other wards where over voting took place without necessarily insisting that oral witnesses be adduced in support of the tendered documentary evidences.

“Again, in the House of Assembly election tribunal judgment in Nkanu East State Constituency involving Labour Party’s Okwudili Michael Nnaji, the panel (a different panel from that of the governorship) was right to rely on only the documentary evidence contained in the certified true copies of the print out of the BVAS Accreditation Reports, without insistence on oral evidence, to order the cancellation of the over-voting in Owo and Ugbawka.

“Interestingly, in the above Nkanu East State Constituency petition, the materials tendered in evidence by the LP House of Assembly candidate whose submissions on over voting were upheld by the tribunal were the same materials that the LP guber candidate tendered before the Akano-led tribunal in a bid to prove over voting in the same polling units in Nkanu East, yet a different panel correctly accepted the evidence of the Labour Party House of Assembly candidate while the Akano-led tribunal jettisoned that of the governorship,” he stated.

He argued that the Enugu governorship election, Nasarawa governorship election and Nkanu East State Constituency election presented similar facts, yet the Enugu governorship tribunal gave a different judgement from what was “correctly held by the Nasarawa governorship tribunal and the tribunal in Nkanu East State Constituency election petition.”

On the issue of Mbah’s NYSC Discharge Certificate saga, he said “the purported issuer of the forged certificate, through a subpoena issued by the Enugu Tribunal, appeared before it to testify that the NYSC Discharge Certificate Gov. Peter Mbah submitted to INEC was not issued by them.

“Sadly, for some strange reasons, the Tribunal thereafter discountenanced the evidence of the Director of Corps Certifications of the NYSC who came to testify at the Tribunal. That testimony, without much ado, fulfils the requirements of the law on proof of forgery and should have indeed proved the case of the petitioner but the Justice Akano-led panel glibly dismissed the pivotal evidence of a key witness it invited to testify before it!”

While appealing for support to correct what he called injustice, he added, “If we allow the injustice perpetrated in Enugu by both the INEC and the Election Tribunal, sitting as the court of first instance, to stand, tomorrow the consequences for us all may be dire.”

  • President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, blasts the BBC as ‘atrocious’ for refusing to brand Hamas as terrorists

President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, blasts the BBC as

The president of Israel has condemned the BBC for its ‘atrocious’ refusal to brand Hamas as a terrorist group.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Isaac Herzog said Israeli families had been “wiped off the face off the earth” and asked what else the BBC needed “in order for them to admit that we are dealing with the worst terrorist organisation in the world?”.

Mr Herzog told the paper: “I feel the BBC’s reporting is atrocious.

“The fact that it does not recognise Hamas as a terror organisation requires a complete legal battle and public battle. It’s unbelievable.

“I’ve seen the booklet that each of those terrorists received. Each one is instructed to go into an innocent village and kibbutz or city and immediately torture whoever is abducted, immediately.

“What other type of torture do they want before they decide it was a terrorist organisation?”

Under its editorial guidelines, the BBC said it does not use the word “terrorist” but attributes it and makes it clear that Hamas is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK Government.

A statement from the BBC board, after its regular monthly meeting held earlier this week, said: “No one who has watched or listened to harrowing reports over the last 10 days could be left in any doubt about the horror brought about by Hamas’s attack on defenceless civilians in Israel.

“As this war continues, with so many deaths of innocent civilians in both Israel and Gaza, the BBC will no doubt continue to come under scrutiny about the way in which we cover it – that is to be expected and also welcomed. The BBC is listening.

“We believe that our editorial guidelines serve us well, and continue to serve us well in difficult circumstances; we do periodically review them as a matter of course, and when we do so at our next planned review in the spring, we will consult and debate these issues just as we always do.”

On Monday, the BBC said it has received complaints about its coverage of the conflict and there have been accusations of bias from both sides.
