  • China now has 500+ nukes, will have 1,000+ by 2030: Pentagon

China currently has more than 500 nuclear warheads and will likely double that number to more than 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030, according to a new Pentagon report released this week.

“DoD estimates that the PRC will probably have over 1,000 operational nuclear warheads by 2030, much of which will be deployed at higher readiness levels and will continue growing its force to 2035 in line with its goal of ensuring PLA modernization is ‘basically complete’ that year, which serves as an important milestone on the road to Xi’s goal of a ‘world class’ military by 2049,” the report states.

A top Defense Department officials warned China’s nuclear power is “on track to exceed previous projections,” according to Politico.

“What they’re doing now, if you compare it to what they were doing about a decade ago, it really far exceeds that in terms of scale and complexity,” said the official, who was granted anonymity to speak ahead of the report’s release. “They’re expanding and investing in their land, sea and air-based nuclear delivery platforms, as well as the infrastructure that’s required to support this quite major expansion of their nuclear forces.”

The White House is working on a face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping in California in November, the Washington Post reported earlier this month.

One administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the meeting is “pretty firm.”

“We’re beginning the process” of planning the meeting, the official added.

Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said the United States and China “are in communication on bilateral engagement and exchange.”

“Both sides,” he added, “need to work in the same direction, clear obstacles and manage differences with concrete actions, and enhance dialogue and expand cooperation in good faith.”

This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.

  • Two Civil Servants Slump Amid Overcrowding At Abuja IPPIS Verification Exercise Centre Hosting 17,000 Workers From Across Nigeria

No fewer than two federal civil servants in Nigeria on Wednesday slumped at the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) verification exercise centre in Abuja.

SaharaReporters gathered that the workers slumped due to overcrowding at the centre and were rushed to a nearby hospital by some of their colleagues.

A video obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday shows the rowdy exercise with no regulations at the Abuja venue where about 17,000 workers from across Nigeria were directed to report for the programme.

This is in compliance with the directive given by the Nigerian Government which mandated all civil servants and workers of the country’s core ministries whose details were yet to be captured by IPPIS to partake in the ongoing registration exercise at a single centre in Abuja.

The exercise was slated for Monday, October 16 to Friday, October 27, 2023, at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN), Kubwa Expressway, Abuja for the thousands of workers whose salaries had been withheld by the government.

“The verification exercise is becoming worse day by day,” one of the workers told SaharaReporters.

“Two people slumped on Wednesday amid the chaos going on here. We had to rush them (to the hospital) for survival. Help us to caution the head of service (Dr. Mrs Folasade Yemi-Esan).”

On Tuesday, SaharaReporters reported how no fewer than 20 civil servants going to Abuja from Maiduguri, Borno State for the exercise were involved in an accident in Gombe.

“At least one of our colleagues has been killed while on their way from Maiduguri to Abuja for the mandatory IPPIS registration exercise. The accident occurred in Gombe. This is really sad but I will keep you posted as we get more details,” one of the affected civil servants had told SaharaReporters.

Due to this, the workers protested against the poor and tiring process of getting captured by the IPPIS at the verification centre in Abuja on Tuesday and were tear-gassed by the police.

“There is an ongoing protest now in Abuja by federal civil servants who have not been paid since May and were asked to come to Abuja for IPPIS verification and recapturing exercise over the death of one of their colleagues among 20 others travelling to Abuja from Gombe,” the source said.

According to the source, the workers are frustrated, adding that only 30 people were attended to on Monday by the IPPIS officials despite the number of people involved.

“As we speak, there are about 5,000 people gathered at the centre this morning, many of them nursing mothers and more are still on their way from across the country,” the source added.

  • Nigerian parliament suspends use of concrete in road construction nationwide

The Nigerian parliament has suspended the planned use of concrete in constructing roads across the nation, according to Thursday’s order paper of the House of Representatives obtained by Peoples Gazette.

Yobe state legislator, Khadija Bukar Ibrahim, proposed the suspension over growing concerns that the “use of rigid/cement concrete pavements” has “significant technical limitations and constraints.”

Ms Ibrahim stressed there was a “need to investigate the adoption of concrete technology for road construction in Nigeria”  particularly its comparative advantages and disadvantages over asphalt which may alter technical specifications and breach contracts since there have been ongoing road projects before David Umahi’s ministerial appointment.

Based on the concerns raised by Ms Ibrahim, the House urged “the Federal Ministry of Works to suspend in the interim the wholesome adoption of cement concrete for road construction pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The suspension could be perceived as a low blow to minister of works, Mr Umahi, who had fiercely sparred with road contractors who favoured asphalt over concrete in road construction.

Mr Umahi had in September boasted of enjoying President Bola Tinubu’s backing to adopt cement for road construction and asserted there was no “amount of gang up within and outside that is going to change this” in response to dissenting contractors.

Additionally, the House mandated designated committees on works, environment, finance and judiciary to investigate the merits and demerits of using cement concrete for road construction and asphalt and report back within three weeks.

  • Judicial Watch Sues State Dept. for Records Related to Eligibility of Hungarians to Participate in Visa Waiver Program

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the U.S. Department of State for communications and records regarding the eligibility of citizens of Hungary to participate in a visa waiver program (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of State (No. 1:23-cv-02964)).

The lawsuit was filed after the Department of State failed to respond to an August 8, 2023, FOIA request sent to its Office of the Information Programs and Services for:

All records related to the modifications to the eligibility of citizens of Hungary to participate in the visa waiver program which went into effect on August 1, 2023 ( This request includes, but is not limited to, all records reviewed, referenced, or relied upon in making the determination to implement the modifications, as well as all related records of communication between any official or employee of the Department of State and any other individual or entity.

On August 1, 2023, Reuters reported, “The United States imposed restrictions for Hungarian passport holders under its Visa Waiver Program on Tuesday … Relations between the two governments have been burdened recently with Budapest’s delay of a parliament vote on Sweden’s NATO accession and curbs on LGBTQ rights by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s nationalist government.”

Citing “vulnerabilities” because Hungary granted citizenship to “nearly one million people” over the nine-year period of 2011 to 2020, the State Department announced on its website:

Today, we notified the Government of Hungary that the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) validity period for travel by Hungarian passport holders is reduced from two years to one year. Additionally, the validity of an ESTA for Hungarian passport holders will be limited to a single use.

“The Leftists running the Biden administration want to punish Hungary because they hate Viktor Oban, Hungary’s conservative prime minister,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “And, as they try to bully Hungary over immigration, the Biden administration continues to allow millions of illegal aliens to come unhindered into the U.S.”

  • Sword poking up from soil leads to discovery of 1,000-year-old Crusader cemetery

When Arthur pulled the sword from the stone, according to legend, he became the rightful king of England. When a local landowner in rural Finland recently pulled a sword from the soil, no one was crowned king — but a major archaeological discovery was made.

The landowner, who lives in Perttel, a small town about 75 miles northwest of Helsinki, spotted the sword in a trench after a bout of rain in August.

Upon examination, the warped, iron weapon turned out to be around 1,000 years old, according to a September news release from the University of Turku.

Assuming the sword wasn’t alone in the ground, archaeologists, who had been alerted to its discovery, scoured the area near where it was found.

Sure enough, they ended up uncovering other blades as well as artifacts, human bones and fragments of possible coffins, university officials said.

Among the more remarkable finds was a rare leather belt decorated with intricately designed pieces of bronze. Articles of clothing belonging to the deceased were also located.

But there wasn’t just one grave, university officials said. At least eight graves were discovered, and it’s likely there are many more, possibly dozens or even as many as 200.

The entire cemetery is believed to date to the Crusader-era, which spanned from 1050–1150 AD.

The Crusades were a series of military campaigns undertaken by Christian monarchies in Europe with the goal of conquering the Holy Land, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Sweden, a Christian kingdom, embarked on its own crusade of Finland and other Baltic territories, according to the book “Crusade and Conversion on the Baltic Frontier 1150 – 1500.”

  • We Won’t Increase Taxes, FIRS Boss Assures Companies

Acting Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, has allayed fears being expressed by corporate organisations that the resolve of FIRS to increase the country’s tax-to-GDP ratio to 18 per cent from 10.86 per cent will lead to increase in taxes.

Adedeji said such resolve would not necessarily lead to increase in taxes or introduction of new taxes as the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is determined to create a wholesome environment for businesses to flourish.

The FIRS chairman had said the agency under his leadership would, in the next three years achieve an eight per cent rise in tax-to-GDP ratio to surpass Africa’s average of 16.5 per cent without stifling investment or economic growth.

The plan had triggered muffled apprehensions among entities corporate that the decision could cause an increase in tax rates or introduction of new ones.

Addressing representatives of top large tax-paying companies during a get-together, Adedeji said, “Our belief, understanding and vision as a revenue-generating agency is not to introduce any new tax as we only want to use data to improve compliance.”

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Dare Adekanmbi, quoted the FIRS chairman as saying that the invited companies and those willing to voluntarily carry out their tax obligations have nothing to be afraid of.

“Our plan is simple. We want to grow tax revenue and we only want to tax prosperity and not poverty. Therefore, it is not in our interest to kill the trees that bear the fruits. My first ‘love letter’ to you is to appreciate what you have done. So, you don’t have anything to be afraid of.

“We will not collect what is not due to us. But we don’t want anyone not to pay what is due to us. Fair engagement is our plan. Rest assured that the 18 per cent tax-to-GDP target will not translate to increase in taxes.

“If you have been listening to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele who is the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, you will have known that part of the mandate of the committee is to reduce the number of taxes,” he said.

According to him, the purpose of the engagement with the companies is to factor their inputs into the strategic action plan being mapped out in order to address challenges hampering tax revenue collection.

He lauded the invited companies for their high sense of responsibility, urging them to continue to discharge their tax obligation diligently.

“I must also commend your commitment to upholding high tax compliance standards and responsible corporate citizenship, which sets you apart as the top taxpayers in Nigeria.

“This aligns perfectly with our vision of making taxation the pivot of national development through voluntary compliance. Your respective industries play a pivotal role in generating substantial tax revenue for government and in shaping economic and fiscal stability of the nation.

“We are not unmindful of the challenges facing businesses in Nigeria with the ongoing reforms to improve economic performance. These are painful but necessary choices we must make as a nation to attain our full potential,” he said.

The chairman, while responding to some of the concerns raised by representatives of the companies such as multiplicity of taxes, duplication of tax oversight on corporate entities, promised to address the issues raised.

Some of the companies at the event included Nestlé Nigeria Plc, ExxonMobil, Shell, Guinness, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Flour Mills, Dangote Group, MTN, British American Tobacco company, First Bank, Access Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank Plc, KC Gaming Limited (Bet9ja), Airtel, Seplat, BUA Cement, Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas, NNPC Limited and others.
