  • The Health Effects of Cousin Marriage in British Pakistanis

These are genes that exist at low frequency in the population and whose effects are only observed when you have two copies (recall that you inherit one copy of each gene from your mother and one from your father). They are usually non-functional versions of genes that have some important biological function, so their effects tend to be deleterious.

When two non-relatives mate, each transmits a certain number of rare recessives but, crucially, these are unlikely to be the same rare recessives (you might carry a non-functional version of gene X, while your spouse might carry a non-functional version of gene Y). Hence their children are unlikely to inherit two copies of the same deleterious gene.

Yet when two cousins mate, they are more likely to transmit the same rare recessives — since they could have each inherited a copy from their common grandparents (a non-functional version of gene X, say). It is therefore not so unlikely that their children inherit two copies of the same deleterious gene. And if their grandparents were also cousins (as might be the case in societies that have practised cousin marriage for several generations) the risk becomes even higher.

How much risk are we talking? A major UK study can shed some light on this question. The ‘Born in Bradford’ study, as it is known, has followed more than 13,000 pregnancies in the city of Bradford from 2007-2010. Approximately 18% involved parents who were first cousins, and an additional 10% involved parents with some other blood relation (usually second cousins), owing to the city’s large Pakistani population.

The latest report from the study was published last year. Its findings are shown below.

Children whose parents were first cousins were more likely to have died. They had higher rates of hospital usage, learning difficulties and speech and language difficulties. And they were less likely to have reached a “good stage of development” by the first year of school. On several of these measures, the difference amounts to a factor of 1.5-2.5, though on other measures it is lower.

Although the rate of cousin marriage among Pakistanis in Bradford has fallen over time, it remains high. report last year put the rate at 46%. Given the risks, why don’t more Pakistanis eschew cousin marriage?

One reason may be that they don’t understand the risks. In 2012, Nasreen Ali and her colleagues carried out interviews and focus groups with Pakistanis in Birmingham concerning the practice of cousin marriage. According to Professor Ali, a “majority of participants” attributed still-births and genetic conditions to factors like “the will of God” or “black magic”.

Although the rate of cousin marriage in Britain remains low, it is substantially elevated in Pakistanis — and this explains why they have higher rates of still-births and genetic conditions. While Conservative MP Richard Holden has called for cousin marriage to be banned, Labour has said it has “no plans” to do so. For the time being, raising scientific literacy may go some way to curbing the practice.

  • EU’s Protectionist Policies Have Been In Place Long Before Trump

Authored by Kenin M. Spivak via RealClearWorld

In March of 2025, President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on imports of steel, aluminum, automobiles, and certain automobile parts. European Union (E.U.) members, except Hungary, announced retaliatory tariffs of 10% to 25% on specific U.S. imports.

On April 2, Trump proclaimed, “Liberation Day” and added a global baseline tariff of 10%, plus customized so-called “reciprocal tariffs.” Because the 2024 U.S. deficit with the E.U. was 39% of imports, he imposed a “discounted” 20% reciprocal tariff on most E.U. goods not subject to the 25% tariff. After a week, excluding China, Trump suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days to facilitate negotiations, and the E.U. delayed its retaliation.

While this may appear to be Trump starting a trade war, in reality it’s Trump ratcheting up a long-simmering war against the United States fought with protectionist trade policies, including by some of our closest allies.  Set aside that Trump’s reciprocal tariffs are actually punitive tariffs, that the trade war is depressing global stock and bond markets, raising the specter of recession, and threatening U.S. economic primacy. Those are criticisms largely based on trying to do too much, too quickly. Turning to the disease, Trump is right. We sometimes are treated better by our enemies than by our so-called trade allies. That’s before counting the trillions of dollars America has spent on their defense.

Together, the U.S. and E.U. represent almost 30% of global trade and 43% of global GDP. Last year, the U.S. exported $370 billion of goods to the E.U. and imported $606 billion, generating a $236 billion deficit. The U.S. last had a surplus with the E.U. in 1991.

Most Americans don’t realize how powerful the U.S. economy is compared to the E.U. In 2024, the U.S. GDP exceeded $29 trillion (about $86,600 per person), compared to $19 trillion for the E.U. (about $45,300 per person). When the E.U. takes advantage of the United States, it really should think twice.

High tariffs are not Europe’s main offense. Instead, the E.U. deters U.S. competition by requiring American companies to comply on a worldwide basis with its far-left antitrust, censorship, data privacy, and DEI rules; limits government purchasing to products with at least 50% local components and E.U. ownership; and sets standards for non-E.U. companies that vary country-by-country, making it prohibitively expensive to do business in the E.U.

One of the starkest results of the trade imbalance is the auto sector. Last year, the U.S. imported 757,654 new vehicles from the E.U., but the E.U. imported only 169,152 new vehicles from the U.S., many of which were manufactured by U.S. subsidiaries of E.U. automotive companies.

The U.S. is the world’s second-largest agricultural trader, behind the E.U. Over the last 25 years, the share of U.S. agriculture exports going to the E.U. dropped from 15% to 7.2%. Total exports grew from about $9 billion to $13 billion, well below inflation. Conversely, from 2013 to 2024, U.S. agriculture imports from the E.U. nearly tripled to about $34.5 billion.

In February, President Trump called the E.U.’s trade practices an “atrocity” and asserted that the E.U. “take[s] almost nothing and we take everything from them.”

According to the U.S. Trade Representative report on Foreign Trade Barriers, E.U. barriers include, among many others:

    • Tariffs up to 26% for fish and seafood, 22% for trucks, 14% for bicycles, 10% for automobiles, and 6.5% for fertilizers and plastics. Tariff codes improperly reclassify processed foods into higher tariff categories.
    • E.U. law restricts non-E.U. ownership in numerous sectors.
    • Packaging and labeling requirements, standards, and technical barriers impede market access for U.S. products that meet international standards, including chemicals, medical devices, wine, spirits, food and agricultural products, meat, and live cattle.
    • The E.U. imposes fines up to 20% of the worldwide revenue on large digital service providers that fail to comply with its censorship, advertising, and content rules. The E.U. uses this authority to undermine U.S. competitiveness.
    • Data maintained outside of the E.U. must comply with rules that conflict with U.S. law, and France requires that cloud providers that handle “highly sensitive” data must be at least 61% E.U.-owned and “immune” from non-E.U. laws.
    • Quotas, subsidies, and content restrictions limit the opportunities for U.S. produced film and television content, and U.S. owned content distributors, while AI and intellectual property laws limit the rights of creators to be remunerated for their content, or maintain confidentiality.
    • Numerous E.U. countries require E.U. nationality to practice law, and for other professional licenses.

While income and savings rate disparities are in part responsible for the E.U.-U.S. trade deficit, the breadth of restrictions plays a significant role. The U.S. should not be subsidizing the E.U.’s economy, paying for its defense, or relinquishing control of international standards organizations to E.U. members. When it comes to global trade, liberté, égalité, fraternité is an empty slogan.

If the E.U. fails to make considerable concessions within the next few months, Trump should respond with properly computed and targeted tariff and non-tariff measures. While this may reduce trade, economic growth, and prosperity, if well-calibrated, the blame – and the brunt of the cost – will fall squarely on the Europeans.

  • 80-year-old man allegedly fatally shot 11-year-old neighbor and then admitted to killing his wife

SUMTER, S.C. (TCN) — An elderly man stands accused of fatally shooting his wife before entering his neighbor’s residence and killing a young child.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, on the night of Wednesday, April 16, 80-year-old Reuben Leonard allegedly went into a home on Floyd Drive, opened fire, and fatally shot his 11-year-old neighbor. Deputies responded to the scene and found the victim with a gunshot wound, as well as family members restraining Leonard.

Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the child was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities took Leonard into custody, and he allegedly told deputies that he had killed his wife prior to shooting the child. Sumter Police responded to Leonard’s house and discovered his 76-year-old wife shot dead inside the garage.

Leonard was transported to a hospital for injuries and is expected to recover. He will be booked into the Sumter County Detention Center upon his release and faces a charge of murder.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis called it a “horrific incident” and said investigators are “working diligently to uncover all the details.”

Enhancing Defense Ties? France and China’s Training Initiative

    21WIRE

Snipers, handling of portable missiles… Beijing offers to train French soldiers. Keen to rebuild ties with France, Beijing has sent the Ministry of the Armed Forces a list of high-level Chinese military institutions likely to host French officers for training.

Under General de Gaulle’s leadership, France became the first significant Western nation to form diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level with the People’s Republic of China in 1964. In contrast, the United States did not establish diplomatic connections with Beijing until 1979. This new initiative, which will likely displease the White House, arises at a moment when neither France nor the EU can afford to neglect their ties with Beijing.

In light of the tense geopolitical landscape characterised by Trump’s trade disputes and China’s halt of Boeing deliveries, this recent rapprochement represents a welcome shift, as France may seize this opportunity to rejuvenate its military partnership with China.. Intelligence Online has the details….

France: Chinese defence attaché woos French armed forces

Beijing sent the French Armed Forces Ministry a list of high-level Chinese military institutes that may be willing to accept French officers for training, in a bid to help rekindle its ties with France.

The two-page document lists 27 Chinese military institutions which might be willing to train foreign soldiers. No Chinese officers at France’s ‘École de Guerre’

According to our sources, Li Hongfei” data-trigger=”hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-container=”body” data-original-title=”Li Hongfei”>Li Hongfei, the defence attaché of the Embassy of China in Paris, reportedly sent that confidential list to the French military command back in December. The 60-year-old general, who arrived in France in 2020 after a posting in Morocco, was making a fresh attempt to convince the French authorities that training their soldiers in China would be to their benefit. Unsurprisingly, France politely declined. Paris has not sent any officers to receive training in Xi Jinping” data-trigger=”focus hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-original-title=”Xi Jinping”>Xi Jinping‘s China since the outbreak of the Covid-19″ data-trigger=”focus hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-original-title=”Covid-19″>COVID-19 pandemic. Likewise, the prestigious French military command academy École de Guerre” data-trigger=”hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-container=”body” data-original-title=”École de Guerre”>École de Guerre has not hosted any Chinese officers since 2018. “We felt that China was taking advantage the very high level cursus to glean strategic information”, a French military source told us.

The move from the Chinese defence attaché, an army officer through and through, reflects the increase in efforts from the Chinese embassy’s security staff in recent months. While the Chinese diplomatic and military apparatus has retreated in on itself since the Covid-19 pandemic, several of our sources have observed a recent rise in activity within the security realm. For instance, Li Hongfei, in charge of a team of five Chinese security officials who have presented their credentials to the French authorities, has not shied away from letting the French military command know of his discontent when a French navy frigate passed through the Taiwan Strait, to China’s disliking.

A new superintendent at the Chinese embassy

The Embassy of China, housed in Hôtel Montesquiou on Rue Monsieur in Paris’ upmarket 7th arrondissement, also recently welcomed a new security expert. As we understand, at the start of the year, chief superintendent Yu Yuan” data-trigger=”hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-container=”body” data-original-title=”Yu Yuan”>Yu Yuan took up his duties as homeland security attaché. Deng Li’s predecessor, “fighting wolf” Lu Shaye” data-trigger=”hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-container=”body” data-original-title=”Lu Shaye”>Lu Shaye, is now Beijing’s special representative to Europe.

Police cooperation between France and China has been patchy, indeed nearly non-existent, since France granted political asylum in 2019 to the wife of former Interpol” data-trigger=”focus hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-original-title=”Interpol”>Interpol president Meng Hongwei” data-trigger=”hover” data-placement=”top” data-template=”” data-html=”true” data-container=”body” data-original-title=”Meng Hongwei”>Meng Hongwei. The former Chinese vice minister of public security had disappeared in 2018 before reappearing and being sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption in 2020. The two countries will probably try to renew ties during a high-level French-Chinese gathering scheduled to take place in June in Beijing. When contacted, the Chinese embassy in Paris did not wish to comment.

  • Texas man allegedly killed and disemboweled his father, who he claimed was an alien

EL PASO, Texas (TCN) — A 39-year-old man is in custody for allegedly killing his father, disemboweling him, and stealing his car.

On April 12, El Paso Police Department officers went to a home on the 11700 block of Ronald McNair Drive for an unattended death situation and found 74-year-old Victor Gerado Contreras deceased. The Crimes Against Persons Unit arrived at the scene and determined Contreras’ death was suspicious. Following an investigation, they issued a warrant for the arrest of Jaime Contreras.

Officers located Jaime Contreras and arrested him on a charge of murder.

According to court documents cited by KDBC-TV, the victim’s son and suspect’s brother went to the home on April 12 to check on his father because he had not spoken to the victim in about a week. The son reportedly could not get in the front or back door, so he went to his dad’s bedroom window and smelled rotting flesh. The son entered the home through the window and reportedly discovered Victor Contreras with his “head bashed in,” throat slit, and covered with a sheet. The son also realized Victor Contreras’ Jeep Wrangler wasn’t at the house.

The son reportedly texted Jaime Contreras about the situation, but he never responded.

The son’s wife spoke with Victor Contreras twice on April 4, and in the first call, he allegedly told her Jaime Contreras was “acting crazy again.” Jaime Contreras, who lived with his father, reportedly took the phone and told her that he was angry that Victor Contreras wanted to sell the house. Victor Contreras called the police, then later informed his daughter-in-law that everything was “fine.”

A neighbor told police that he saw Jaime Contreras driving his father’s Jeep, parking it nearby, and going to his house for several hours at a time.

Police executed a search warrant for the house and discovered apparent blood throughout. Investigators found Jaime Contreras and the Jeep nearby, and when they asked where Victor Contreras was, he said he was “in heaven.”

Investigators reportedly saw injuries and lacerations on Jaime Contreras’ body. Contreras allegedly told them he hurt himself “battling,” and fighting. KDBC reports he claimed an alien recently harvested his organs.

KTSM-TV reports police previously responded to calls at Victor and Jaime Contreras’ home. In 2023, Jaime Contreras allegedly said his father was an alien, then walked around the surrounding streets with a decapitated rabbit. Several months later, officers went to the house because Jaime Contreras again said his dad was an alien.

On April 5, Victor Contreras reportedly called El Paso Police saying Jaime Contreras was “threatening him and killed his pets.” Police went to the home and listed it as “checking OK.” Hours later, Victor Contreras called police a second time and claimed Jaime Contreras threatened him with a hammer.

The medical examiner who went to the home when Victor Contreras was found dead noted that the 74-year-old was “disemboweled.”

Jaime Contreras is in custody at the El Paso County Jail with bond set at $2 million.

  • Trump: Fed Chair Powell “Always Too Late & Wrong”

Trump: Fed Chair Powell “Always Too Late & Wrong”

    “Termination Cannot Come Fast Enough!”

(ZH) – As US equity markets continue to fall – and recession calls mount from establishment elites, despite strong ‘hard’ data’ – President Trump lashed out at Fed Chair Powell via TruthSocial this morning exclaiming that Powell’s termination from his position can’t come quickly enough, arguing that the US central bank should have lowered interest rates already this year, and in any case should do so now.

The ECB is expected to cut interest rates for the 7th time, and yet, “Too Late” Jerome Powell of the Fed, who is always TOO LATE AND WRONG, yesterday issued a report which was another, and typical, complete “mess!”

Oil prices are down, groceries (even eggs!) are down, and the USA is getting RICH ON TARIFFS.

Too Late should have lowered Interest Rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now.

Powell’s termination cannot come fast enough!

In a news conference in November, Powell was asked whether he would step down if Trump asked him to resign.

Powell gave an unusually blunt answer: “No.”

He later added that the removal or demotion of top Fed officials was “not permitted under the law.”

The President of the United States cannot unilaterally fire the Chairman of the Federal Reserve before the end of their term, except under specific legal conditions. Here’s a structured breakdown:

    Appointment Process:
The Fed Chair is nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate for a 4-year term, which is renewable. The Chair also serves as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, who have 14-year terms.

    Legal Framework:
The Federal Reserve Act allows the President to remove a Board member (including the Chair) only “for cause” (e.g., misconduct, neglect of duty). This does not include policy disagreements or political differences.
This provision ensures the Fed’s operational independence from short-term political pressures, safeguarding its role in managing monetary policy.

    Historical Context:
Past presidents (e.g., Nixon with Arthur Burns, Reagan with Paul Volcker) have faced limitations in influencing Fed Chairs. While they could apply political pressure or decline reappointment, outright removal was not legally feasible without just cause.
Courts have historically upheld the Fed’s independence, reinforcing that “for cause” requires a high threshold, such as ethical violations or incapacity.

    Practical Implications:
A President can indirectly influence the Fed by shaping its leadership through appointments (when terms expire) or public persuasion. However, abrupt removal to impose preferred policies would face legal challenges and undermine institutional credibility.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier this week indicated that the administration’s timeline for considering Powell’s successor was roughly six months away.

Speaking in a Bloomberg Television interview, Bessent said that the timing for interviewing candidates to replace Powell was “sometime in the fall.”

Bessent also said that Fed independence in deciding on monetary policy was a “jewel box that has got to be preserved.”

We suspect some of Trump’s frustration comes from the fact that China’s PBOC is doing ‘whatever it takes’ to prop up their economy/market (take your pick)…

Furthermore, Trump does have grounds for thinking that the so-called ‘Independent’ Fed is far from it following the comments from Bill Dudley in 2019…

Doesn’t sound like an ‘apolitical’ entity to us?

One more thing – for mathematically gifted among you – why did The Fed slash rates by 50bps just ahead of the election when financial conditions were already ‘easy’ but refuses to do so now that financial conditions are drastically tighter?

At least Trump hasn’t got physical with Powell… yet!

However, Trump’s ability to remove top officials at agencies that had long been viewed as having a measure of independence from the White House has come into acute focus in recent months, after the administration dismissed senior officials at the Federal Trade Commission, the National Labor Relations Board and Merit Systems Protection Board.

As Bloomberg reports, the firings are the most direct challenge yet to a 1935 Supreme Court decision that paved the way for agency independence.

Powell made reference Wednesday to a current Supreme Court case with regard to the removal of the NLRB and MSPB officials.

“There’s a Supreme Court case. People will have read probably” about it, Powell said in answering questions at the Economic Club of Chicago.

“That’s a case that people are talking about a lot. I don’t think that decision will apply to the Fed but I don’t know,” he said.

    “It’s a situation that we’re monitoring carefully.”

Powell’s term as chair runs into May 2026, while his term as a governor lasts until February 2028.

  • Ohio man accused of restraining and abandoning toddler with special needs for hours

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (TCN) — A 35-year-old man is accused of locking a toddler with special needs in a bedroom and leaving the child alone for hours.

According to the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office, on April 8, Joshua Merz allegedly left a 2-year-old child alone for at least seven hours while he went to work. A neighbor reportedly discovered the child and called law enforcement. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office subsequently responded and noticed the home was “filthy and potentially dangerous.”

On April 16, prosecutors announced that Merz was indicted on two counts of child endangerment. If convicted, he faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison.

The indictment alleges Merz “recklessly physically restrained” the child in a “cruel manner or for a prolonged period, which restraint was excessive under the circumstances and a created a substantial risk of serious physical harm.”

In a statement, Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich said, “There is never a reason to leave a 2-year-old child home alone. It’s our job to make sure those who cannot speak for themselves are protected. And that’s exactly what we will do in this case.”

The first and second games of each series will be played as a doubleheader on the first day of the series. The host team will serve as the “home team” in the first game of the series. The traveling team will be the designated “home team” in the second game. The host team will be the home team if the third game is necessary.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association has set the price of admission at $12 for a doubleheader and $10 for a third game. Tickets may be purchased in advance through GoFan. Additionally, all three schools hosting will have a cash gate upon entry.

Andalusia, 13-9-1, the 5A Area 3 champion, will host Faith Academy (20-5), the Area 2 runner-up, in a series beginning Friday, April 18, at 4 p.m. Game two will follow at approximately 6:30 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Saturday, April 19, at 11 a.m.

Florala (15-7), the 1A Area 2 champion, will host Red Level (10-8), the Area 3 runner-up, in a series beginning Friday, April 18, at 1 p.m. Game two will follow at approximately 3 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m.

Leaked White House Doc: Monster Budget Cut Proposal @ Fed Health Agencies

Document calls for slashing “tens of billions of dollars” annually, targeting a host of programs across multiple agencies. ~CNN

(ZH) – The Trump administration could slash roughly one-third of the federal government’s bloated health budget, a leaked White House proposal shows. The plan, first reported by the Washington Post and detailed in documents acquired by CNN, calls for slashing “tens of billions of dollars” annually, targeting a host of programs across multiple agencies.

The proposal, already sent to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), aligns with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative and tech titan Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, sources say.

The proposal, part of President Donald Trump’s broader push to curb government waste, would eliminate billions in annual spending and reign in a sprawling bureaucracy that employs 82,000 workers across 10 regional offices, with average salaries of $100,000 plus generous benefits.

    CNN reports:

The plan calls for steep cuts to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which would see its budget reduced by more than 40% under the administration’s proposal.

It also eliminates CDC’s global health center and programs focused on chronic disease prevention, and domestic HIV/AIDS prevention. While some of the agency’s work would be moved into new AHA centers, programs on gun violence, injury prevention, youth violence prevention, drowning, minority health and others would be eliminated entirely.

The preliminary plan would slash the National Institutes of Health’s budget by more than 40% and reduce its 27 research institutes and centers down to just eight.

This month, HHS launched its initial wave of layoffs, with 10,000 employees slated for termination in the coming weeks.

The COVID-19 pandemic is over, and HHS will no longer waste billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a non-existent pandemic that Americans moved on from years ago. HHS is prioritizing funding projects that will deliver on President Trump’s mandate to address our chronic disease epidemic and Make America Healthy Again,” the agency said in a statement at the time of the first cuts.

The annual budget of the HHS is a staggering $1.8 trillion.

As we previously noted, the agency was infamously implicated in funding controversial gain-of-function research through EcoHealth Alliance through Dr. Anthony Fauci’s NIAID. These efforts, tied to the Wuhan Level 4 Virology Lab in China – widely considered COVID-19’s ground zero – allegedly produced human-transmissible coronaviruses, sparking a deadly pandemic and draconian lockdowns around the world. How could we forget?

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
