  • Ohio dad gets life for fatally shooting his 3 young sons at home in 'monstrous' killing

BATAVIA, Ohio (TCN) — A 33-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison and avoid the death penalty after he pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his three young sons at their home last year.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Chad Doerman entered the plea Friday, Aug. 2, for three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault for killing 7-year-old Clayton Doerman, 4-year-old Hunter Doerman, and 3-year-old Chase Doerman. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors said they would not pursue the death penalty against him. A judge sentenced him to three life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole.

    Doerman initially pleaded not guilty.

At his hearing on Friday, Doerman’s attorneys reportedly argued that Doerman was “profoundly sick” from mental illness.

On June 15, 2023, at 4:15 p.m., Doerman’s wife, Laura Doerman, called the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office and said her “babies had been shot.” Minutes later, the dispatch center received a call from a driver who said she saw a girl running down the street yelling that her “father was killing everyone.”

Deputies arrived at the home on Laurel Lindale Road and located Doerman sitting on a step outside the home near three unresponsive juveniles in the yard. Despite lifesaving measures, all three boys were declared deceased at the scene. Laura Doerman also sustained a gunshot wound to her hand. She was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to court documents cited by the Cincinnati Enquirer, on the day of the shooting, Doerman started walking around his house holding a Bible and talking to himself, allegedly repeating, “Chad knows what’s right.” He went into his room, opened his gun safe, and took out a .22 caliber rifle.

Laura Doerman reportedly became concerned, so she and her young kids went into the bedroom to be with him. Doerman shot one of the sons in the room, then Laura Doerman told her other children to escape.

Doerman reportedly followed the boys into the yard, shooting once from far away and a second time after the boy fell to the ground. The boys’ sister ran with the third son, but Doerman reportedly held her at gunpoint and told her to let the boy go. The sister “begged the defendant not to shoot her.”

Doerman aimed at the boy, but his gun misfired. The boy ran to his mother, but Doerman caught up with him and killed the boy. Laura Doerman sustained the gunshot wound to her hand by protecting the little boy.

After all three were dead, Doerman reportedly moved their bodies to the front yard.

When deputies got to the house, Doerman reportedly told them, “I ain’t gonna hurt nobody. I’m completely sober.” He also said, “I did it. Take me to jail.”

At his court hearing in June 2023, WLWT-TV reports Clermont County prosecutor David Gast said, “The trauma that this man has inflicted on his family, community, law enforcement, first responders, and all the rest of us is unspeakable. There has been a full admission in this case; the case is still new [and] we’re still discovering facts. But the evil horror of what we know is impossible to process. In an act of incomprehensible cruelty, the father that stands before you lined up his three young boys and executed them in his own home with a rifle.”

Gast called the crimes one of “the most monstrous, craven, cowardly acts that will ever be our misfortune of seeing.”

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Doerman’s stepdaughter, the one who fled with one of the sons, spoke at Doerman’s sentencing hearing and said, “I don’t get to do any of the fun stuff anymore because they’re gone and you took their lives. When you took those three boys lives away, you took mine and took my mom’s.”

Laura Doerman also provided a statement, saying, “My life was ripped away from me and destroyed. Where there used to be so much laughter, happiness, noise of rowdy little boys, there is now sadness and emptiness. I would do anything to push them on the swing, cover them up one more time, and hear their little ways of saying, ‘I love you.’”

Following the sentencing, she said she wants the community to remember her sons as “the three little boys who lived for fishing, go-carting, and swimming. Remember them as the little boys who were always at the baseball fields or running around outside. Remember them as the boys who love to have fun and were inseparable from one another.”

Prosecutor Mark Tekulve said, “Chad Doerman will die in prison.”

  • Major Biden-Harris Mistake Gave Taliban $239 Million In U.S. Aid

    From Townhall:

A new report from Judicial Watch found that the U.S. mistakingly gave hundreds of millions of dollars to the Taliban after the State Department failed to properly vet award recipients.

At least $239 million in taxpayer money has landed in the hands of terrorists since the Biden Administration’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. The State Department appears not to have followed its own counterterrorism partner vetting requirements in Afghanistan before approving the 29 grants to several local entities.

  • Lessons from Buddhist Teachings – The US Times

    Contributor Club post (fee-based)

    Guest Post…

Sid Kemp, is a highly experienced life coach and devoted Zen practitioner with 40 years of dedicated practice. He is the author of multiple Amazon bestselling books published by prestigious publishers like McGraw-Hill and Entrepreneur Press. In addition to sharing Buddhist meditation since 1987, Sid has also contributed articles to Entrepreneur.com and his wisdom has attracted a loyal following of over 6,000 people on Quora.

Question: I’m confused by karma. My friend is a good, compassionate person, but his life has been full of catastrophic events, over & over. He’s now permanently disabled. Is this his karma from his previous mistakes? It doesn’t seem fair.

Sid’s Answer: Everyone is confused by karma, at least until we attain a very deep enlightenment. And, sadly, life and the world are not fair. A deep understanding of karma teaches us that.

The deepest Zen teaching I have found about karma is that, when one deeply Awakens (attains enlightenment), karma becomes clear. Karma never ceases operation. There is no accumulation of karma. Karma operates in the present moment, not in lifetimes. Karma arises and operates before time and space arise and operate. All karmic teachings about lifetimes and rebirth or reincarnation are not a deep understanding of the teachings of the Buddha.

Your friend’s situation calls for deep compassion, and calls it forth from me. The most relevant Buddhist teaching is simply the First Noble Truth: In all of life, there is suffering. Suffering appears greater at some times and less at other times. It appears more for some than for others. All this is unfair, and this unfairness leads to more suffering.

So what is a healthy, Awakened response to suffering such as your friend is experiencing? What does the Buddha teach on this? I speak as a lifelong Buddhist practitioner and meditation teacher and as someone who continues to experience chronic pain and debility in spite of my own best efforts to be healthy.

Asking, “Why did this happen to such a person?” is not part of the Buddha’s practice. In deep Buddhist and Zen practice, we respond to present conditions with presence and appropriate action. We dwell in compassion and extend it to those who are suffering. We deepen our wisdom to see how we might nourish, support, or perhaps guide those who are suffering. To deepen our wisdom, we see that we begin each day by eliminating suffering and the roots of suffering inside of ourselves. The more free of delusion and suffering we are ourselves, the more clarity and strength we have to offer.

To put it simply, “Why?” is not a helpful question. Helpful questions are: “How do I hold this?” and “How do I respond?” And healthy answers to those questions are the embodiment of love and wisdom in action and in silence.

Whether the suffering is our own or someone else’s, we dwell simultaneously in effective action and also in patient, peaceful presence. It is difficult to be deeply committed to making our best effort and also free of attachment to results. Living this way, we reduce our suffering and help others reduce theirs and grow into greater Light.

Where is karma in all of this? Karma is found most clearly in habit formation. Each action anyone performs makes it more likely that we will repeat that action. This includes habitual thoughts and feelings. Very importantly, it includes motivation and intent. And, of course, it includes our words and deeds.

No one has an easy life, though some clearly have it harder than others. But the Buddha teaches that there is no value in making comparisons. Rather, let us accept each moment as it is, pain, suffering, life, joy, peace and all. Right action is cultivating health, joy, and peace in ourselves and others, wishing nothing but well-being for all.

Even in suffering, we can do that. And the people I know who have lived this way through great suffering are or were wonderful gifts to the world.

I dedicate this post to Susan Jion Postal sensei, who lived courageously and compassionately with Lupus disease and was a gift to all who knew her.

A new détente: Can Putin and Biden make a deal?

The Kremlin seems to have decided it would rather deal with Biden-Harris than wait for Trump

    RT-World News

By Dmitry Drize, political observer at Kommersant FM

Russia is delighted with [last] Thursday’s prisoner exchange in Ankara, Western media outlets report, citing sources in their countries’ respective agencies. Meanwhile, in Washington and in Western European capitals, the event is being presented as a major diplomatic breakthrough. It may even be a prelude to further talks between Moscow and Washington.

It was the largest swap in modern Russian history, not only in terms of the number of people involved, but also in their status. This time, not only foreigners convicted in our country, but also Russian citizens – let’s say critics of the existing state system and its leadership – were released from prison. We don’t need to list them all again. That information is everywhere in news stories and has been repeated many times.

It’s worth repeating that the last time anything like this happened was during the Cold War. So we have yet another indication that history is repeating itself more or less: missiles being placed in Western Europe, nuclear exercises in Russia, the decline in diplomatic relations….. all the signs are there. Nevertheless, this event is positive in terms of the prospect of defusing international tensions and perhaps encouraging a detente. Incidentally, this was a buzz word in the 1970s.

Top US officials were in a festive mood. Joe Biden spoke at the White House, surrounded by the families of those transferred. The Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, flew from Houston to Washington to meet them. So, they were received at the highest level.

It also seems that the Kremlin has a lot of doubts about Donald Trump’s chances of victory. That’s the first thing. And secondly, it is no big secret that it’s much easier to come to an agreement with the Democratic Party in general and the Biden-Obama-Harris faction in particular. This is what we are witnessing. We can also recall that one of Biden’s first executive orders after taking office in 2021 was to extend the START treaty. As we know, ‘dear Donald’ refused to sign the document. But ‘Bad Joe’ took it and approved it, and immediately at that. So betting on this team seems quite logical. By the way, it’s also believed that both Iran and China believe it’s better to deal with bad than “very bad,” and they also don’t want Trump to return. But let’s not get sidetracked.

Anyway, an unprecedented agreement has been reached. And often when you manage to make one, it’s followed by a second. That is to say, theoretically we can assume that this is the beginning of the process of realigning relations between Russia and the West.

Of course, the main stumbling block here is Ukraine, but it’s not the only one. And this process should take place before the election in the US, i.e. in the shortest possible time frame. The reason is obvious: Trump could win and then we’ll have to start all over again. Some will say: but what about all the hopes and assumptions pinned on him, and why are they being forgotten?

Yes, we should not be naive. But events are moving, and moving fast. And time is running out. So what can we do? We can hope for the best, or rather, hope for the prudence of all parties. We don’t want the planet to burn in a fiery hell. So it makes sense to try to somehow avoid that scenario.

  • Wis. man on the run for 30 years arrested in Iowa after being pulled over for bike infraction

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (TCN) — A 71-year-old man who had been on the run out of Wisconsin for 30 years was arrested and identified after he was pulled over for not having a bike reflector.

According to WISN-TV, on June 26, a West Des Moines Police Department officer pulled the man over for not having a light on the back of his bike. The officer asked the man his name, and he identified himself as Gregory Stallins. He said he didn’t have a driver’s license, nor had he had one in several decades. The officer took down his information and ran it through the system after letting “Stallins” go free.

WISN reports police located him several minutes later and confronted him about his questionable identity. Newly released body camera footage shared by WISN shows the officer saying, “The info you gave me comes back to a dead guy. Gregory Stallins is dead.”

“Stallins” was later identified as George Hartleroad.

As it turns out, Hartleroad was found guilty of false imprisonment, endangering safety by conduct regardless of life, and possession of a short-barreled rifle in 1983. He reportedly held a woman at knifepoint and sexually assaulted her. He later tied her to a tree, and she was rescued by some passersby.

WISN reports Hartleroad escaped from a halfway house in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1995, after he was released from prison.

After learning Hartleroad’s true identity, one of the officers told him, “None of us are mad at you. I’m just baffled that law enforcement has let you go for 30 years.”

A clip from the body cam footage shows Hartleroad telling cops, “I will jump again as soon as they turn me loose.”

Hartleroad has been extradited to Wisconsin and is in custody at the Dane County Jail.

  • FOIA Requests Tied to Trump Shooting Denied

    From Newsmax:

The Secret Service has denied all three Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests seeking documents, videos and advance survey security assessments, among other items, related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the Judicial Watch reports.

The agency, citing Title 5 U.S.C. § 552(B)(7)(A), said “any potentially responsive records, if they exist, are exempt as disclosure could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings. The citation of the above exemption is not to be construed as the only exemption which may be available under the FOIA.”

  • Fact Check: Simone Biles didn’t announce her retirement or a pregnancy, as recent social media posts claim

Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history and she finished the 2024 Olympics with three gold medals and one silver.

Even before her final performance Aug. 5 in the Paris Games, a floor routine that netted her the silver medal, a Facebook post claimed that Biles had announced her retirement and said she was pregnant.

“JUST IN,” the Aug. 2 post said. “Just Reported that America’s most decorated Olympic gymnast of all time, Simone Biles Announces Retirement at 27 After Securing Gold at Paris Olympics, Reveals she is ‘expecting a baby’ with her husband, Jonathan Owens. This joyous revelation marks a new chapter in her life as she steps away from competitive gymnastics to focus on her growing family.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

Two Olympic athletes revealed that they were pregnant during the Games, but Biles wasn’t one of them.

We found no credible news reports corroborating the post’s claims, no public statements from Biles, and nothing on her Instagram, Facebook or X accounts. Her Wikipedia page has not been updated with any such news.

The New York Times reported Aug. 5 that Biles’ floor competition that day could be her final Olympics performance, citing Biles’ mother Nellie Biles and sister Adria Biles.

“‘Oh, this is it definitely,’ her sister, Adria said, convinced that Simone wants to start a family after marrying last year,” the Times story said.

But, the Times said, Biles has also hinted at competing in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

What we know for sure: She didn’t announce her retirement, or a pregnancy.

    We rate that claim False.

  • Trailblazing a New Era in Culturally Sensitive Mental Health – The US Times

Pioneering a Path to Decolonized Therapy

In the realm of mental health, few individuals have had as profound an impact as LaVerne Collins, PhD. As the owner and visionary behind her transformative counseling practice, Dr. Collins has dedicated 28 years to reshaping the landscape of mental health services for Black/African American communities. Her journey is one of resilience, innovation, and a relentless commitment to culturally sensitive care.

A Journey Rooted in Passion and Experience

Dr. Collins’ career in counseling began with a desire for greater flexibility and freedom in her schedule. However, it quickly evolved into a mission to address the glaring void in mental health services for Black communities. With a master’s in community counseling and a PhD in Christian counseling, she has served in various capacities, including counselor, clinical supervisor, program manager, executive director, and private practitioner.

Early in her career, Dr. Collins faced significant challenges. In many agencies, clients were arbitrarily assigned to counselors, with little regard for compatibility. This system often revealed deep-seated prejudices, as some non-BIPOC clients refused help from an African American counselor, prioritizing their racist ideologies over their own health. Dr. Collins confronted these harsh realities head-on, learning to navigate and overcome the systemic biases that pervaded the field.

    A Vision for Transformative Care

What sets Dr. Collins apart is her unwavering commitment to advancing the mental health and wellness of Black/African American individuals. Recognizing the inadequacies of Euro-centric, mono-cultural approaches in counseling, she developed a three-tier model that encompasses individual counseling, training for counselors, and the development of national trainers. This model is designed to move critical issues out of the shadows and elevate counselor awareness about the unique aspects of the Black experience.

Dr. Collins’ work shines a light on overlooked identity issues, historical contexts, counselor biases, strengths, and losses that are often ignored when counseling Black clients. Her approach is encapsulated in her book, “OVERLOOKED: Counselor Insights for the Unspoken Issues in Black American Life,” which has become a cornerstone of her practice and a guide for counselors seeking to provide more culturally sensitive care.

    Recognition and Impact

In February of this year, Dr. Collins’ groundbreaking work was recognized by the Georgia-based Transformation Training Institute, which presented her with the Trail Blazer Award. This accolade celebrates her innovative approach to transforming mental health service delivery for Black/African American communities. Her model of counseling the community, training local counselors, and developing national trainers is setting new standards in the field.

    Decolonizing Therapy: A Movement

Dr. Collins’ vision extends beyond individual therapy sessions. She is a staunch advocate for the decolonization of therapy—a movement aimed at challenging and disrupting mainstream ideologies that do not reflect the lived realities of Black people. Her goal is to see a global shift in how therapy is practiced, ensuring that it is inclusive and reflective of diverse cultural experiences.

    Overlooked

    The Path Forward

Looking ahead, Dr. Collins envisions a world where therapy is free from the constraints of white norms and expectations. She dreams of an entire movement of professionals at all levels within the field growing, learning, and teaching others how to address the needs of Black clients with culturally appropriate tools. Her dedication to this cause is unwavering, and she continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in mental health care.

Dr. Collins’ impact is profound and far-reaching. Her commitment to decolonizing therapy and advancing the mental health and wellness of Black/African American individuals is inspiring a new generation of counselors and trainers. Through her book, her training programs, and her unwavering advocacy, LaVerne Collins, PhD, is not just changing lives—she is transforming the very fabric of mental health care.

For those interested in learning more about her work or connecting with Dr. Collins, she can be found on her website and connect with her at LinkedIn. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to social justice in the field of mental health.
