  • Man allegedly kidnapped ex, tied her in wheelchair, then killed and buried her with new girlfriend’s help

POTOSI, Mo. (TCN) — A man faces charges after allegedly kidnapping and beating his missing ex-girlfriend, tying her hands and feet with ratchet straps in a wheelchair, fatally shooting her, and having his new girlfriend help destroy evidence.

According to a probable cause statement from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, on June 20, Tony Charboneau allegedly punched and stomped on his ex-girlfriend, identified by KSDK-TV as Amy Houge, following an argument. Deputies allege that Charboneau and his new girlfriend, Brandi Luffy, placed Houge into a wheelchair and tied her hands and feet with ratchet straps.

Charboneau and Luffy reportedly gathered shovels, tarps, a pickax, and a gun before driving the victim to a wooded area near Charboneau’s home while Houge was still tied in the wheelchair. Charboneau allegedly dug a shallow grave with the tools they collected before taking Houge out of the wheelchair and fatally shooting her.

According to the sheriff’s office, Charboneau “spent the rest of the day burying her in the grave” and “covering her with large rocks and tree limbs.” Luffy reportedly stayed in the car and acted as a lookout.

Following the burial, deputies allege Luffy and Charboneau destroyed the ratchet straps and tarp before disposing of the victim’s purse at a river in Jefferson County.

Luffy reportedly admitted to authorities that she assisted Charboneau in Houge’s death, and she led investigators to the victim’s remains. Officials with the sheriff’s office discovered Houge’s partially decomposed body with an apparent bullet wound to her head.

Washington County Prosecuting Attorney John Jones announced Aug. 5 that his office charged Charboneau with first-degree murder, first-degree domestic assault, first-degree kidnapping, abandonment of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Luffy faces charges of felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, abandonment of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

According to the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Charboneau was previously charged on suspicion of domestic assault against the victim. Those charges remain pending in the Washington County Associate Circuit Court.

In a statement, Jones said, “This case is horrifying in every respect, and my office will not rest until the victim’s killers are brought to justice.”

  • Judicial Watch Sues for Fauci Emails and Agency Records Tied to FOIA/Covid Cover-Up

(Washington, DC)Judicial Watch announced today it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for records of Fauci, various top officials, grantees, and contractors regarding efforts to subvert FOIA and other information requests about Covid issues (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (No. 1:24-cv-02185)).

The suit was filed after the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID – part of the NIH and a component of HHS) failed to respond to a May 23, 2024, FOIA request for records on:

    1. Dr. David Morens, former top Scientific Advisor to retired NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, and current Senior Advisor at NIH, soliciting help, advice, or assistance in any manner from any employee of the NIAID or NIH’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) office including a) Margeret Moore b) Robin Schofield c) Marianne Manheim to circumvent, avoid (i.e. through use of private email, phone calls, deleting emails, etc.), or otherwise not respond in accordance with FOIA laws and regulations to FOIA requests.

    2. Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired NIAID Director, NIH, soliciting help, advice, or assistance in any manner from any employee of the NIAID or NIH’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) office including a) Margeret Moore b) Robin Schofield c) Marianne Manheim to circumvent, avoid (i.e. through use of private email, phone calls, deleting emails, etc.), or otherwise not respond in accordance with FOIA laws and regulations to FOIA requests.

    3. Communications between NIH and/or NIAD FOIA employees, including a) Marianne Manheim; b) Robin Schofield; c) Karen Lampe; concerning withholding information requested through FOIA regarding EcoHealth Alliance (EHA) and/or the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

    4. Communications of Dr. David Morens, including use of private email, or advising anyone (internal or external to NIH) to communicate using private email channels (i.e. gmail) to conduct official government business when discussing the “Daszak Grant”, “COVID”, “EcoHealth Alliance”, “EHA”, “secret”, “kickbacks”, “Trump”, “Tony”, “WIV”, or the “Wuhan Institute of Virology”. 5. Communications of Dr. David Morens with any employee at EcoHealth Alliance (email domain: @ecohealthalliance.org) regarding how to respond to NIH compliance efforts, requests, or investigations, concerning the NIH grant with EcoHealth Alliance.

    6. Communications of Dr. Anthony Fauci, including using a private email, or advising anyone (internal or external to NIH) to communicate using private email channels (i.e. gmail) to conduct official government business when discussing the “Daszak Grant”, “COVID”, “EcoHealth Alliance”, “EHA”, “secret”, “kickbacks”, “Trump”, “Tony” “WIV”, or the “Wuhan Institute of Virology”. On May 22, 2024, Morens testified before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic at a hearing titled “A Hearing with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Senior Scientific Advisor, Dr. David Morens,” in which it was reported:

Evidence obtained by the Select Subcommittee shows Dr. Morens unlawfully deleted federal COVID-19 records, shared nonpublic information about National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant processes with his “best-friend” EcoHealth Alliance President Dr. Peter Daszak, and likely lied to Congress multiple times.

In prepared remarks by House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic Chairman Brad Wenstrup, he notes:

We have evidence that Dr. Morens purposefully evaded public transparency required by the Freedom of Information Act by intentionally using a personal email account for official business.

We have evidence that Dr. Morens unlawfully deleted government records and may have engaged with the NIH FOIA office to assist this illegal action.

We have evidence that Dr. Morens routinely acted as an intermediary between Dr. Daszak and Dr. Fauci.

And we have evidence that Dr. Morens took affirmative steps to assist Dr. Daszak so that EcoHealth could have its grant reinstated after it was suspended under the Trump Administration.

Margeret Moore, who is cited in the Judicial Watch records requests, seems to be the so-called “FOIA Lady,” who allegedly advised Morens on how to circumvent FOIA and avoid responding to FOIA requests. She was then (now retired) NIAID’s FOIA public liaison whose official responsibilities included: “assisting in reducing delays; increasing transparency and understanding of the status of requests; and resolving disputes between you and the agency.” In two emails from February 24 and 25, 2021, which were subpoenaed by the Pandemic Subcommittee, Morens writes:

2/24/21 to a redacted recipient at a gmail address: … I learned from our foia lady here how to make emails disappear after I am foia’d but before the search starts, so I think we are all safe. Plus I deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to gmail. D.

2/25/21 to Gerald Keusch at a Boston University email address and cc’d to Peter Daszak and another redacted recipient at EcoHealth Alliance: … I learned the tricks last year from an old friend, Marg Moore, who leads our FOIA office and also hates FOIAs.

Also on May 22, the Select Subcommittee issued a memo titled “Allegations of Wrongdoing and Illegal Activity by Dr. David Morens, Senior Advisor to National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases former Director, Dr. Anthony Fauci,” in which it is noted that Morens initially responded to a request for records with 2,000 responsive pages and after a being subpoenaed supplied approximately 30,000 more pages of records:

Evidence in possession of the Select Subcommittee suggests that Dr. Morens knowingly transmitted official records to Dr. Fauci via his personal e-mail. If true, this raises serious questions of whether Dr. Fauci took part in a conspiracy amongst the highest levels of NIAID to hide official records regarding the origins of COVID-19.

The following day, the committee issued a “hearing wrap up” regarding Morens’ testimony:

Evidence obtained by the Select Subcommittee prior to the hearing showed that Dr. Morens … deliberately obstructed the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the origins of COVID-19 to protect Dr. Fauci, unlawfully deleted federal COVID-19 records, and shared nonpublic information about National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant processes with his “best-friend” EcoHealth Alliance President Dr. Peter Daszak. Dr. Morens’s testimony confirmed these discoveries and proved that he clearly believes the laws of the federal government do not apply to him. Members used Dr. Morens’s own emails as evidence of his misconduct and pressed Dr. Morens to explain why he displayed such contempt for the American people while serving as a senior official at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Fauci operation seems to have had contempt for the public’s right to know about what exactly it was up to regarding Covid,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “There was obviously a systematic attempt by HHS bureaucrats to circumvent FOIA requests during the Covid era. This new lawsuit can further help undo this cover-up.”

Judicial Watch FOIA lawsuits and investigations have uncovered much of what the public knows about many Covid-19 controversies:

    •  In June 2024, Judicial Watch sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for records from the Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) regarding after action reports, review of procedures, or studies concerning the preparation for and response to the Covid-19 pandemic
    • In April 2024, Judicial Watch uncovered FBI records that showed an April 2020 email exchange with several officials in the bureau’s Newark Field Office referring to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) grant to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China as including “gain-of-function research” which “would leave no signature of purposeful human manipulation.”
    • Emails between U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and top Facebook executives in 2021 regarding the censorship of user posts about Covid controversies showed Facebook leadership seeking to “better understand the scope of what the White House expects from us on misinformation going forward.”
    • Records from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) showed that a Pfizer study surveyed 23 people in 2021 to gauge reactions to its Covid vaccine booster before asking the FDA to approve it.
    • Records from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) included the initial grant application and annual reports to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from EcoHealth Alliance, describing the aim of its work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology to create mutant viruses “to better predict the capacity of our CoVs [coronaviruses] to infect people.”
    • HHS records included emails of then-Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Francis Collins showing a British physicians’ group recommended the use of Ivermectin to prevent and treat Covid-19.
    • Heavily redacted HHS records showed that just two days prior to FDA approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine a discussion was held between U.S. and UK health regulators regarding the Covid shot and “anaphylaxis,” with the regulators emphasizing their “mutual confidentiality agreement.”
    • Judicial Watch obtained HHS records regarding data Moderna submitted to the FDA on its mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, which indicated a “statistically significant” number of rats were born with skeletal deformations after their mothers were injected with the vaccine. The documents also revealed Moderna elected not to conduct a number of standard pharmacological studies on the laboratory test animals.
    • Heavily redacted records from the FDA regarding the Covid-19 booster vaccine detailed pressure on Covid booster use and approval.
    • HHS records detailed internal discussions about myocarditis and the Covid vaccine. Other documents detailed adverse “events for which a contributory effect of the vaccine could not be excluded.”
    • Judicial Watch uncovered HHS records detailing the extensive media plans for a Biden administration propaganda campaign to push the Covid-19 vaccine.
    • HHS records revealed previously redacted locations of Covid-19 vaccine testing facilities in Shanghai, China. The FDA had claimed the name and location of the testing facilities were protected by the confidential commercial information exemption of the FOIA.
    • NIH records showed an FBI “inquiry” into the NIH’s controversial bat coronavirus grant tied to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The records also showed National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) officials were concerned about “gain-of-function” research in China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2016. The Fauci agency was also concerned about EcoHealth Alliance’s lack of compliance with reporting rules and use of gain-of-function research in the NIH-funded research involving bat coronaviruses in Wuhan, China.
    • Texas Public Information Act (PIA) records showed the former director of the Galveston National Laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Dr. James W. Le Duc, warned Chinese researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology of potential investigations into the Covid issue by Congress.
    • HHS records regarding biodistribution studies and related data for the Covid-19 vaccines showed how a key component of the vaccines developed by Pfizer/BioNTech, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), were found outside the injection site, mainly the liver, adrenal glands, spleen and ovaries of test animals, eight to 48 hours after injection.
    • Records obtained from HHS through a FOIA lawsuit related to hydroxychloroquine and Covid-19 revealed that a grant to EcoHealth Alliance was cancelled because of press reports that a portion of the grant was given to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
    • HHS records revealed that from 2014 to 2019, $826,277 was given to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for bat coronavirus research by the NIAID.
    • NIAID records showed that it gave nine China-related grants to EcoHealth Alliance to research coronavirus emergence in bats and was the NIH’s top issuer of grants to the Wuhan lab itself. The records also included an email from the vice director of the Wuhan Lab asking an NIH official for help finding disinfectants for decontamination of airtight suits and indoor surfaces.
    • HHS records included an “urgent for Dr. Fauci” email chain, citing ties between the Wuhan lab and the taxpayer-funded EcoHealth Alliance. The government emails also reported that the foundation of U.S. billionaire Bill Gates worked closely with the Chinese government to pave the way for Chinese-produced medications to be sold outside China and help “raise China’s voice of governance by placing representatives from China on important international counsels as high level commitment from China.”
    • Judicial Watch’s four-part documentary regarding the coordinated effort by the government and Big Tech to censor and suppress information on topics such as Hunter Biden’s laptop, Covid-19, and election debates is available here.

  • Fact Check: Germany, Scotland, Sweden: What has Donald Trump said about where his parents were from?

After former President Donald Trump falsely questioned his Democratic opponent Vice President Kamala Harris’ race and ethnicity at a National Association of Black Journalists conference, Omarosa Manigault Newman criticized Trump’s characterizations of his family’s heritage.

On July 31 on CNN’s “Laura Coates Live,” Newman referred anchor Laura Coates to a detail Newman said was in Trump’s 1987 book.

“I recall in his book ‘The Art of the Deal,’ Laura, when Donald Trump identified himself as Swedish, right?” Newman said. “Because he didn’t want to acknowledge that his father was German and his mother was Irish, and he thought that that would play better to those who were patronizing his businesses. So, can we call the question his past of self-identifying as first Swedish, then German, and then Irish whenever it’s convenient? Donald doesn’t know the difference between ancestry and race.”

    (Internet Archive)

We contacted Newman’s agent and also tried emailing her but received no response.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung did not respond to the claim’s substance, but sent PolitiFact a statement criticizing Newman, saying, “She should work on telling the truth.”

PolitiFact used Google Books to search “The Art of the Deal” for the words “Sweden” and “Swedish.” The search returned two results, and only one was relevant to Trump’s family.

“Fred Trump was born in New Jersey in 1905,” read that passage. “His father, who came here from Sweden as a child, owned a moderately successful restaurant, but he was also a hard liver and a hard drinker, and he died when my father was eleven.”

    (Screenshot from Google Books)

What do we know about when Trump’s family came to the U.S.?

The claim in Trump’s book that his paternal grandfather, Friedrich Trump “came here from Sweden as a child,” is inaccurate.

Friedrich Trump was born in 1869 in Germany and went to the U.S. in 1885 at age 16, according to multiple news organizations including, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Politico, NBC News, CBS News, CNN, The Guardian and CBC News in Canada.

Gwenda Blair, a journalist and biographer who wrote “The Trumps: Three Generations of Builders and a President” confirmed this.

Donald Trump’s “paternal grandparents were born in Germany, his father in the U.S., his mother in Scotland,” she told PolitiFact.

German historian Roland Paul in 2016 told news outlets that Friedrich Trump left Germany without deregistering or completing his mandatory military service. As a result, when he tried to return to his home country in 1905, Friedrich Trump was ordered to leave the country or be deported, reported CNN, The Guardian and Politico.

Friedrich Trump came to the U.S. when Northern European immigrants were largely welcomed, and he later became a U.S. citizen, The Washington Post reported.

Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, was born in the U.S., according to news reports, his New York Times obituary, and his son’s book. Washington Post columnist Philip Bump shared a picture of Fred Trump’s birth certificate that showed his parents had a Bronx, New York, address when he was born.

Donald Trump’s mother, Mary Trump, was born in Scotland, according to news reports, her New York Times obituary and her son’s public remarks.

Fearing anti-German sentiment, the Trump family claimed ties to Sweden, reports say

Blair said that in the 1930s, leading up to World War II, Fred Trump, a New York City real estate developer, “began to say he had a Swedish background.”

In September 1990, Vanity Fair reported that Fred Trump hid his German background because most of his tenants were Jewish.

Trump’s father died June 25, 1999. In his obituary, The New York Times reported that, until the 1980s, Fred Trump told “friends and acquaintances that he was of Swedish origin, although both his parents were born in Germany.”

“He had a lot of Jewish tenants and it wasn’t a good thing to be German in those days,” said John Walter, Donald Trump’s cousin and the family’s historian, according to The New York Times.

“The Swedish background story, which Donald repeated in ‘The Art of the Deal,’ published in 1987, continued until about 1990,” Blair said.

In a 2016 article, The New York Times quoted Walter saying that when Donald Trump was working on his book, he “questioned the need” to say his grandfather came from Sweden. “Do I have to do this Swedish thing?” Trump asked his father, according to Walter’s account.

Trump told The Boston Globe in 2016 that his father had spent time in Sweden and talked about being Swedish because “our country was at war with Germany,” and “being from Germany didn’t necessarily play so well for a period of time.”

The Globe reported that the Swedish heritage claim “had been abandoned” by 2000, citing Donald Trump’s book “The America We Deserve,” which was published that year.

We used Google Books to search “The America We Deserve” for “German” and “Germany” and found passages that said Friedrich Trump was born in Germany.

“My grandfather was German,” read one Google Books excerpt. Another, which the Globe also reported, said Friedrich Trump “came here from Germany as a child.”

    (Screenshot from Google Books)

What has Donald Trump said about his parents?

Trump has mentioned his German and Scottish roots on numerous occasions. At least twice, he was recognized for his family’s German background.

In 1986, Trump was awarded an Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his “professional contributions that benefited New York City as a developer, as well as for his German heritage,” an Ellis Island Honors Society spokesperson told PolitiFact in 2019. In 1999, Trump served as the grand marshal of the German-American Steuben Parade in New York City, according to the parade website.

More than once, Trump inaccurately claimed his father was born in Germany. In 2019, we rated that claim Pants on Fire!

Here’s a collection of some of Trump’s comments about his parents over the years:

    • In the 2010 documentary “All-American Billionaire,” Trump said, “My mother was born in Scotland, in the Hebrides, in Stornoway, so that’s serious Scotland. And she was a great woman.”

    • In 2011, Trump filmed a video message for the annual Steuben Parade. “My grandfather Friedrich Trump came to the United States in 1885,” he said. “In 1999, I was the grand marshal of the German-American Steuben Parade and I really enjoyed that day. … I’m a proud German-American. Enjoy the parade, and I’ll be watching you from Trump Tower.”

    • In January 2018 on “Good Morning Britain,” Trump said, “My mother was born in Scotland, in the Hebrides.”

    • In July 2018 on “CBS Evening News,” Trump said, “Don’t forget, both my parents were born in EU sectors, OK? I mean, my mother was Scotland; my father was Germany.”

    • At the White House in April 2019, Trump said, “My father is German, right? Was German. And born in a very wonderful place in Germany, and so I have a great feeling for Germany.” (Again, his father was born in the United States.)

    • On “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” in April 2022, Trump said, “My mother was born in Scotland.”

PolitiFact Researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report.

  • Walz’s history on born-alive abortions opens door for Trump | The Liberty Beacon

Walz also has pushed to eliminate fossil fuels and gas-powered cars from Minnesota, with a goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050, with EVs mostly required by 2035 under a California-style tailpipe emission rule and electricity to be carbon-free by 2040.

He also endured significant criticism for his slow response to the George Floyd riots that devastated Minneapolis in 2020. And he signed a law allowing illegal aliens to get state drivers’ licenses in the midst of one of America’s steepest border crises.

But Walz’s role in making Minnesota one of the most permissive abortion states in the world – abortions can be sought for any reason and at any time – is certain to become a lightning rod in the last 90 days of the campaign, allowing Republicans to flip a script and suggest the Democratic ticket in 2024 is the more extremist when it comes to abortion.

That assault began in earnest on Tuesday just hours after Harris named Walz her running mate.

“Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota signed a law allowing the killing of preborn babies at any stage, even up to birth. Along with Kamala Harris, who made her career out of persecuting pro-life activists, this is the most pro-abortion presidential ticket in American history,” prominent anti-abortion activist Lila Rose wrote on X.

And Minnesota’s rare abortion reporting requirements – now disbanded – will allow conservatives to put front and center an uncomfortable truth for pro-choice advocates: later-term abortions sometimes result in infants being born alive and left to die with just comfort care or no care at all.

The language of Minnesota’s born-alive abortion reports from 2019 through 2023 are as plain and clear as they are likely to be shocking to many Americans unaware that the new Democratic vice presidential nominee presided over a state that allowed eight infants to die without life-saving care on his watch.

The July 2022 report described the five deaths in 2021 this way:

For the calendar year of January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021, 5 abortion procedures resulting in a born-alive infant were reported.

    • In one instance, fetal anomalies were reported resulting in death shortly after delivery. No measures taken to preserve life were reported and the infant did not survive.

    • In two instances, comfort care measures were provided as planned and the infant did not survive.

    • In two instances, the infant was previable. No measures taken to preserve life were reported and the infant did not survive.

The July 2020 report described the three deaths in 2019 this way:

For the calendar year of January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019, three (3) abortion procedures resulting in a born-alive infant were reported.

    • In one instance, fetal anomalies were reported but residual cardiac activity was present at 2 minutes. Care of fetus was transferred to the second medical doctor. No measures taken to preserve life were reported and the infant did not survive.

    • In one instance, comfort care measures were provided as planned and the infant did not survive.

    • In one instance, the infant was previable. No measures taken to preserve life were reported and the infant did not survive.

Minnesota’s permissive abortion laws run contrary to public opinion, especially in second and third trimesters when infants can be born alive in a failed abortion.

Gallup reported in 2023, the same year Walz signed the new abortion law in his state, that majorities of Americans oppose legal abortion in the second (55%) and third (70%) trimesters.

Republican pollster Scott Rasmussen created a messaging platform last year to help Republicans, often portrayed as the extremists when it comes to abortion, to flip the script by focusing on supporting women considering an abortion decision and denouncing abortion up to the moment of birth.

“We’ve done some research and when you say that most Democrats have supported abortion up to the moment of birth, hardly anybody believes you,” Rasmussen told Just the News earlier this year.

“Only 5% of voters believe that a woman should be able to have an abortion at any time up to the moment of birth with no exceptions and no restrictions. And by the way, on the other side, only 5% are saying that there should be no abortions allowed, you know, regardless of any other restrictions.”

Longtime evangelical activist Ralph Reed, who helped fashion the GOP’s pro-life platform for Trump in 2024, said Trump has an unprecedented opportunity to flip the script.

“The real extremists on abortion are the Democrats whose platform calls for abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy, including up to the moment of birth and calls for the creation of a new abortion entitlement under Medicaid that would allow for taxpayer-funded abortion under Medicaid for the first time since Roe v. Wade, and would lead to hundreds of thousands of additional abortions every year,” Reed told Just the News last month. “And when you poll that, about 12% of the electorate supports it. So they’re the extremists. They’re the radicals. They’re out of the mainstream.”

The library is always a big part of children’s summers

    Published 11:00 am Wednesday, August 7, 2024

Written and Submitted to the Star-News by APL Children’s Librarian Caryl Lee Ray

Growing up in Andalusia, summertime meant there would be certain things happening: swimming lessons at the city pool, vacation Bible school, and summer reading at the library. These are events that are still a part of our heritage today.

I recently found the paperwork where my Mama Mary signed me up for a library card at 6 years old. This summer over 200 cards were issued to children and adults from our little library. As a little girl I sat in the Dixon Room and watched performers. As a young mama, my sons were also present for programs and checking out books. Like so many people in Andalusia, we have grown up in this library.

This year 1,465 people attended the 2024 Summer Reading Program. This is the biggest turnout we have experienced in the 17 years I’ve been working at the library. Over 1,500 books have been registered on reading logs. That means that the children in our community have not only collected prizes but more importantly, checked out books, took them home, and read them. Think of all the places the library books from Andalusia have traveled this summer: beaches, car rides, plane trips, ballparks, camping, visits to grandparents, etc.

Popcorn could be smelled throughout the building on Movie Mondays. Tweens and Teen Tuesday involved painting and beading and music. Daycares and summer camps brought their groups for tours and private story times. The city parades were hot but it’s always fun to hear “Hey Library Lady.” Lego Contests have showcased the amazing creativity of our kids. Friday mornings at the library involve kids, kids, and more kids. From babies to preschoolers, to older homeschool children there has been activity happening at the library.

The participation in the summer reading program has grown and become more successful than ever with the help of our generous community. Lost Pizza gave free pizzas to every child that read 10 books!! (6-year-old D.J. Damon read 370 books!) The Kiwanis organization donated funds for our programs. Parents in the community donated door prizes for other children in memory of their own child’s history in the library. WAAO and the Star-News have supported and publicized our activities. Thank you, Andalusia, for supporting the library and children in our town.

Summer break may be over and some stories may be coming to an end, but Andalusia Public Library is still going strong.

The library will host “Raising Readers” Baby Lap Time every Friday morning at 10 a.m. and Preschool Story Time is also on Fridays at 10:30 a.m.

  • Author Tanya White, Teaches How the DEI Barriers Expand Beyond the Classroom – The US Times

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya White.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

I am a native of Louisville, Kentucky, a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and a super fan of the group New Edition. I have earned a bachelor’s in business management, a master’s in special education, a master’s in k-12 school counseling, and a specialist degree in educational leadership/principal certification, all from the University of Louisville.

Pursuing a career in education was not my first choice. I had begun a master’s program in Human Resource Training and Development, hoping to land a job as a corporate trainer. I became a substitute teacher to earn a paycheck while in school. In 2000, I accepted an assignment at one of the toughest and lowest-performing schools in the district. When it was completed, I told the secretary I loved the assignment. She was shocked that I wanted to return and asked me to wait to talk to the principal. The principal offered me a teaching position, and so began my twenty-year career in education.

In 2005, I launched a blog after my mother died of lung cancer. Writing became my therapy. The blog encouraged my confidence to write and self-publish books in 2007. To expand my platform, in 2008, I launched a Blog Talk Radio show called Real Talk With Tanya White. To date, I have published ten books, my internet radio show is now on one of the premier gospel stations in my city, and I have a podcast, Go Get It With Tanya White on an internet radio station.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

The biggest challenges are coping with the untimely deaths of my father when I was 25, my mother, when I was 34, and the love of my love, Stefon, when I was 50. I dealt with all three losses differently, but the pain was the same. However, the death of Stefon awakened me to cherish myself, people, and life from a deeper perspective.

Stefon and I met via a dating site 1 month before the Covid-19 pandemic shut the world down in 2020. It was a long-distance relationship. Our courtship was God sent. He was the man I prayed for 49 years to have in my life. He said that he was his blessing. After dating for fourteen months, we decided to take our relationship to the next level of relocation and then marriage. The week I officially moved, the doctors informed us that his prostate cancer had returned aggressively and was inoperable. They gave Stefon six months to a year to live, but he died within six weeks of the news. Two months after leaving my hometown with a giddy hope of marrying the love of my life, I returned brokenhearted, numb, and honestly angry with God.

Two years later, I am still grieving in a healthy manner but learned a very important lesson. Grief is inevitable, and it is gut-wrenching. But it is a natural part of the life cycle. God will birth more out of you while you are grieving than you ever imagined.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I have been writing and self-publishing professionally since 2005. I specialize in coaching/consulting authors to write and self-publish their books of quality from cover, manuscript development, and creating a branding/marketing plan beyond just celebrating releasing the book. I also help clients to develop a magnetic media presence. I am truthful, transparent, and timely to ensure tangible results.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

When others try to ignore, dismiss, and diminish your skills and talents, you will ask yourself, “Am I Enough”? Always, always respond emphatically, “YES, I AM ENOUGH!”

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Living your life without shame, blame, or apology, according to your purpose, peace, and God’s plans.

    What’s next for you?

On July 4, 2023, I am releasing my 10th book, Professionally Lynched: Revealing Systemwide Workplace Injustices and Healing From the Lifelong Trauma It Causes Everyone, which will be available everywhere books are sold. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) departments aim to offer support and programs to combat unbiased actions and establish equitable opportunities to create an inclusive workplace. However, organizations are talking the talk of DEI but are not walking the walk, particularly when it pertains to Black women obtaining seats at the decision-making table. My workplace injustices did not metastasize until I became a school administrator and began to advocate and create change on a broader organizational scale.

Professionally Lynched is not a “tell-all” book of what I endured. However, it is a “tell-the-truth” project of what is occurring throughout organizations everywhere, particularly in my industry, public school education. Being a native of Louisville, Kentucky, I was not shocked at what the Department of Justice uncovered regarding the tragic killing of Breonna Taylor in 2020. The Louisville Metro Police Department is not the only system in our city that operates in an unethical, unconstitutional, and discriminatory manner. My book not only discusses my journey and the other accounts of professional lynching, but it exposes the policies, procedures, and accountability structures that are in place that allow workplace injustices to be acceptable behavior.

Professionally Lynched is a social justice manifesto for an organizational revolution to end systemwide workplace injustices and to heal the lifelong trauma it causes everyone.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

To listen to some high energy, fun and information-focused radio, people can listen to my live Real Talk With Tanya White show Tuesday mornings from 9am-10am EST in the Louisville, Kentucky area on 101.9 FM, 1240 AM or online at

Then people can listen to my podcast Go Get It With Tanya White can be listened to via Go Get It With Tanya White – Podcast.co . I have had the pleasure of interviewing some amazing guests such as Dr. Steve Perry, Kimmi Scott from Love & Marriage Huntsville, Actress Brely Evans from the hit BET show Family Business, TikTok sensation & Blackronyms skit creator, DaSan Onyx Frazier, and many more phenomenal people.

  • WHO Director Considers Declaring Public Health Emergency Over Mpox Virus | The Liberty Beacon

WHO Director Considers Declaring Public Health Emergency Over Mpox Virus

By Jack Phillips via The Epoch Times

The World Health Organization’s director-general said the United Nations health body is considering declaring an emergency for mpox, also known as monkeypox, amid an outbreak in Africa.

“But more funding and support for a comprehensive response are needed,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday.

“I am considering convening an International Health Regulations emergency committee to advise me on whether the outbreak of mpox should be declared a public health emergency of international concern.”

By Tuesday, it was unclear when the WHO would declare the emergency or issue any warnings about the virus.

A statement from Tedros published by the journal Science added that “this virus can and must be contained with intensified public health measures including surveillance, community engagement, treatment and targeted deployment of vaccines for those at higher risk of infection.”

“A further scaling up of the mpox response underway in affected countries is urgently needed amid the expanding outbreak,” his statement said, calling for “more funding for a comprehensive response” that factors in diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.

A public health emergency of international concern is the strongest designation for an outbreak. Notably, such a declaration was made for COVID-19 during the early onset of the pandemic in 2020.

Later, WHO made the designation for an mpox outbreak that lasted from 2022 to 2023, while President Joe Biden’s administration declared an emergency over the virus. During that outbreak, which impacted Europe and the United States, officials say mpox primarily spread via sexual contact between men.

The latest announcement was made as the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report last week that mpox has now been detected in 10 African countries this year, including Congo, which has more than 96 percent of all cases and deaths.

Officials said nearly 70 percent of cases in Congo are affecting children younger than 15, who also accounted for 85 percent of deaths.

There have been an estimated 14,250 cases so far this year, nearly as many as all of last year, the Africa CDC said. Compared to the first seven months of 2023, the Africa CDC said cases are up 160 percent and deaths are up 19 percent, to 456.

Burundi and Rwanda both reported the virus for the first time this week, while new outbreaks were recently reported in the Central African Republic and Kenya.

“We are very concerned about the cases of monkeypox, which is ravaging (the capital region),” the Central African Republic’s public health minister, Pierre Somse, said on Monday.

Two cases were confirmed in Uganda, according to an Aug. 4 notice published by the International Society for Infectious Diseases, citing the country’s health ministry.

“Both individuals presented with symptoms such as skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, and general malaise, which are consistent with mpox,” the Ugandan Health Ministry stated.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Health Ministry recently said it found mpox in a passenger traveling from Uganda to Rwanda at a border crossing in southern Kenya. In a statement, the ministry said that a single mpox case was enough to warrant an outbreak declaration.

Over the weekend, health officials in South Africa announced the country now has 22 cases of mpox, including three deaths.

“Contact tracing and monitoring activities are ongoing in the affected communities in both provinces, and the Department urges all the identified contacts to cooperate with health officials during contact tracing for screening and possible diagnosis to prevent further transmission of this preventable and treatable disease,” the South Africa Health Department said in a statement, published on Aug. 4.

Signs and symptoms of mpox, according to the U.S. CDC website, include a rash that might be located on the feet, hands, face, chest, and mouth, or near the genitals. The rash can form scabs and initially look like blisters or pimples, which may be itchy or painful.

Other symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, chills, aches, exhaustion, and respiratory symptoms such as a cough, nasal congestion, or sore throat, according to the health agency.

  • Fact Check: Does GOP Senate candidate Eric Hovde want to repeal the Affordable Care Act?

It’s been around for well over a decade, but it’s still a hot topic in congressional campaigns in 2024: the Affordable Care Act.

That’s true in the U.S. Senate race in Wisconsin, where Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin faces Republican challenger Eric Hovde.

“My opponent wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act and kick millions off their health insurance,” Baldwin said at Vice President Kamala Harris’ first presidential campaign rally in West Allis on July 23, 2024.

She’s made similar claims before, including in a post on the social media platform X that has nearly a quarter of a million views.

Does Hovde want to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare? And has his position on the issue changed over the years?

    Let’s take a look.

Hovde said he supported repealing as recently as June, also in comments back in 2017 and 2012

When we reached out to Baldwin’s campaign for backup, communications director Andrew Mamo shared a memo with Hovde’s comments about the ACA from 2024, 2017 and 2012.

The most recent of those examples was in June of this year, when Hovde was interviewed by WMTV 15, a Madison television station.

“Would you want to repeal the Affordable Care Act?” the reporter asked.

“Oh, 100%. I think we need to change the Affordable Care Act,” Hovde answered.

Hovde added the “only thing I think that was worthy in that bill was pre-existing conditions. So, I believe in supporting and keeping pre-existing conditions.”

Hovde is referring to the part of the ACA that says insurers can’t refuse to cover or charge more when people have preexisting conditions: such as multiple sclerosis, which Hovde was diagnosed with in 1991.

Baldwin’s campaign also shared clips of Hovde’s remarks in 2017, when he said he would have voted for two Republican bills that would have repealed and replaced the ACA.

“You should push it through. You should get it done because it’s a vast improvement (to) where we are. But is it a perfect bill, absolutely not,” Hovde told conservative radio host Jerry Bader on WTAQ in June 2017.

And in 2012, when he was running in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, Hovde made multiple comments that he’d repeal the law.

One of those instances was during an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial board, in which Hovde said he’d repeal the ACA “in its entirety.”

“I think we need to move back to a free-market approach to solve a lot of these problems. I think we need to break up the mini-monopolies in every single state,” Hovde said in part.

While those are statements from the past, his comments from June indicate he still wants to repeal the ACA.

Hovde says he wants reform on his website, but doesn’t suggest ACA alternatives

Meanwhile, PolitiFact Wisconsin reached the Hovde campaign, but they didn’t have anything to add from his most recent interview on the matter.

But we can glean more information from Hovde’s campaign website, where he lists health care reform as one of his top four issues, along with the cost of living, immigration and foreign policy.

On the health care page, Hovde doesn’t explicitly say he wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, rather that the health care system is “deeply flawed and in need of reform.”

The webpage “has many inaccurate statements and misrepresentations of data,” said Donna Friedsam, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who studies health care policy and reform.

To be clear, we’re fact-checking Baldwin here, not Hovde. But it’s important context for understanding why he wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

For example, prescription drug prices did not “skyrocket,” like Hovde asserts on the website.

The average price of a prescription has not increased considerably in recent years, Friedsam said, pointing to a Congressional Budget Office analysis from 2022.

That’s partly due to rebate discounts and lower-cost generic drugs that offset rising prices for brand-names.

Finally, Hovde also doesn’t lay out specifics of an alternative plan he wants to see.

His June comments indicated he wants to keep protections for preexisting conditions, but there’s not much more information on his campaign website.

Would millions get kicked off their health insurance if ACA is repealed?

Finally, let’s look at the last part of Baldwin’s claim: that “millions” would get kicked off their health insurance if the ACA is repealed.

PolitiFact has looked at a similar claim before, when Biden said over a hundred million Americans would lose protections for preexisting conditions if former President Donald Trump repealed the law.

Baldwin’s campaign pointed PolitiFact Wisconsin to a 2023 fact sheet from the White House.

The White House cited a Congressional Budget Office estimate from 2017 that found the Republican repeal legislation would “grow the ranks of the uninsured by 23 million.”

And the number of people with some type of ACA coverage has grown since 2017, the White House noted. They put the number at 40 million people whose insurance would be at risk.

The picture is a bit complicated when estimating what would happen if the ACA was repealed. But Baldwin does seem on par that millions would lose their insurance or be at risk.

    Our ruling

Baldwin said Hovde “wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and kick millions off their health insurance.”

Hovde made comments in the past, and as recently as June, that he does want to repeal the law. He calls for health care reform on his website, but doesn’t explicitly call for repealing the ACA.

That website also contains inaccuracies and misrepresentations about the ACA, according to a health care expert that reviewed it. Hovde doesn’t lay out an alternative plan.

    We rate Baldwin’s claim True.
