  • Fact Check: Kamala Harris once backed mandatory assault weapons buybacks. Not anymore.

Former President Donald Trump told supporters in Georgia that Vice President Kamala Harris will take away their guns and leave them “totally defenseless in your house.”

“She supports mandatory gun confiscation,” Trump said Aug. 3 at a campaign rally in Atlanta. He added sarcastically, “Would anybody mind if they came into your house and took away your gun? …  She’s for taking away all of your guns.”

In July, we saw similar statements about Harris’ gun record from the NRA, Gun Owners of America and Dave McCormick, a Pennsylvania Republican running for U.S. Senate.

The phrase “gun confiscation” is broad and could lead voters to think that Harris wants to confiscate all guns from law-abiding owners. That’s not what she has said.

Further, those rights are constitutionally protected by the Second Amendment. In the U.S. gun buybacks are programs organized by local police departments that voluntarily allow people to turn over their guns in exchange for something, such as a gift card.

While running in the presidential primary in 2019, the then-California senator said she supported a “mandatory gun buyback program” for assault weapons. It did not apply to all guns, and she no longer holds that position.

The Trump campaign did not respond to our request for comment.

Harris has supported gun buybacks and other measures

Harris addressed gun buybacks several times during the 2019 campaign.

During an October 2019 gun control forum in Las Vegas, Harris joined two primary rivals in supporting the mandatory buyback of assault weapons.

“We have to have a buyback program, and I support a mandatory gun buyback program,” Harris said. “It’s got to be smart, we got to do it the right way. But there are 5 million (assault weapons) at least, some estimate as many as 10 million, and we’re going to have to have smart public policy that’s about taking those off the streets, but doing it the right way.”

Assault weapons are not the majority of guns sold in the U.S. Handguns are the most popular. A 1994 federal assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004, barred the “manufacture, transfer, and possession” of about 118 firearm models and all magazines holding over 10 rounds. Harris has supported renewing the ban throughout her career.

In November 2019, NBC News also reported that Harris then supported a “mandatory gun buyback.” Harris told the interviewer that “there is no place” for assault weapons on the streets.

NBC News’ Harry Smith asked Harris, “So, say you’ve got a couple hundred thousand off the streets, I mean, isn’t that just a drop in the bucket?

Harris said: “Well, what we’ll do is have an incentive for people to turn them in and buy them back. But when we`re talking about weapons of war, I mean, it literally is this simple. Five million assault weapons on the streets of America, period.”

The Trump campaign in an X post highlighted Harris’ response to a college student’s question in a September 2019 episode of “The Tonight Show” starring Jimmy Fallon.

One student asked Harris, “Do you believe in mandatory buy back of quote unquote ‘assault weapons’ and whether or not you do, how does that idea not go against fundamentally the Second Amendment?”

In its video clip of Harris, the Trump campaign included a couple of sentences of Harris’ remarks. We put the parts that the Trump campaign included in the video in bold:

Harris said: “I do believe that we need to do buybacks.” Then she described assault weapons as “weapons of war.” She vowed if elected to “ban on the importation of assault weapons” and said that the U.S. will have to deal with the assault weapons that are already in the country.

“And, so, a buyback program is a good idea, now we need to do it the right way and part of that has to be buy back and give people their value the financial value of what they have and not just take things from people that have value without compensating them. We need to do it the right way,” she said.

During an April 2019 CNN town hall, Harris referred to her time as state attorney general and said law enforcement was permitted to confiscate guns from people who were found by a court to be a danger to themselves or others.

“I have to stress, lawful gun ownership, that is one thing,” Harris said. “We’re talking about something else and we have to stop conflating and blending all these issues.”

In April 2019, Harris told reporters in Iowa, “We are being offered a false choice. You’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away. It’s a false choice that is born out of a lack of courage from leaders who must recognize and agree that there are some practical solutions to what is a clear problem in our country.”

We asked the Harris campaign whether she still supports mandatory assault weapons buybacks. She does not. A campaign spokesperson pointed to a comment the campaign gave to The New York Times that, like President Joe Biden, Harris wants to ban assault weapons but not require people to sell them to the federal government.

We found no statements by Harris during calling for mass gun confiscation during her vice presidency.

As vice president, Harris has urged states to pass red flag laws and supported federal gun safety legislation that included funding for mental health and school security resources. None of that is akin to gun confiscation.

    Our ruling

Trump said Harris “supports mandatory gun confiscation.”

While running in the 2019 presidential primary, Harris said, “I support a mandatory gun buyback program” for assault weapons. This would not cover all guns; handguns, for example, are the most popular.

Trump used the present tense when he said that Harris “supports mandatory gun confiscation.” The Harris campaign told The New York Times that she supports banning assault weapons but not a requirement to sell them to the federal government. We could find no examples that she currently supports mandatory gun confiscation.

The claim contains an element of truth about her past position on assault weapons, but it leaves a misleading impression about her platform in 2024. We rate this statement Mostly False.

  • Scrutiny grows over Walz’s China ties as CA Gov. Newsom strengthens Chinese relations | The Liberty Beacon

Scrutiny grows over Walz’s China ties as CA Gov. Newsom strengthens Chinese relations

By Kenneth Schrupp | The Center Square | Just the News

California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared “California Panda Day” to highlight Sino-Californian cooperation as scrutiny grows over Minnesota governor and now Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz’s close relationship with China.

“Building on our strong foundation of partnership and deep cultural and economic ties, I traveled to China last year to advance priority issues including climate action and economic development,” said Newsom in his proclamation making August 8 “California Panda Day.” “We hope that the newly arrived panda ‘envoys of friendship’ will lead to further exchanges and cooperation between California and China.”

According to the California Chamber of Commerce, California exports to China were $18.15 billion in 2022, with Chinese imports to California reaching $147.6 billion that year.

While visiting China in 2023, Newsom signed a declaration and five memorandums of understanding with China on climate change.

“Specifically, our partnership and work together will accelerate the clean energy transition, including offshore wind, advanced energy storage technologies, and zero-emission vehicles; mitigate carbon emissions and sustain economic growth, including the role of carbon markets and climate finance; advance action that reduces non-CO2 emissions, including methane; and build resilience to our changing climate while protecting biodiversity,” wrote Newsom in his declaration.

China produces 80% of the world’s solar panels, 80% of the world’s batteries, 60% of the world’s windmills, and more than half of the world’s electric vehicles, including 80% of the world’s zero-emission heavy-duty trucks, and the largest share of the world’s electric busses; in 2018, 421,000 out of the world’s 425,000 electric buses were in China.

The governor’s declaration also noted that China is expanding its carbon market, suggesting that most aspects of California’s green energy revolution — from the state’s $53 billion climate package to carbon credit mandates and even more local governments’ EV bus and solar panel operations — could drive American taxpayer and business funds to China.

Newsom’s announcement comes over increasing security regarding Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who is from a small Nebraska town, and his ties with China. Walz speaks Mandarin and says he has both lived in the country and visited 30 times. Walz first visited China at the time of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, telling Congress later — according to NBC — that “It was my belief at that time that the diplomacy was going to happen on many levels, certainly people to people, and the opportunity to be in a Chinese high school at that critical time seemed to me to be really important.”

As a teacher, Waltz told the Nebraska Star-Herald he secured funding from the Chinese government to bring American students to China. He also told the Star-Herald that “If [the Chinese] had the proper leadership, there are no limits on what they could accomplish.”

Walz and his wife founded a company to take American high school students to China, and were married on the five-year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, a decision his wife says was intentional, and honeymooned in China while bringing American students on a tour.

As a member of Congress, Walz traveled to Tibet and met with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet exiled by China, and served on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, which focused on Chinese human rights abuses, suggesting Walz’ public and close appreciation for China and its people may not extend to its government.

However, as governor of Minnesota, Walz is celebrated by Democrats for his emphasis on green energy, which in the current market means buying equipment from China — a point Republicans were quick to attack.

“Tim Walz is a guy who wants to shift more and more American manufacturing jobs to China,” retorted Ohio Senator and Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance. “If you care about the environment, and I certainly do, why are you going to ship American manufacturing jobs to the dirtiest economy in the world? Why wouldn’t you keep them right here?”

  • San Antonio man allegedly booby-trapped car wash bathrooms, left exploding fireworks under toilets

SAN ANTONIO (TCN) — A 46-year-old man is facing felony charges after he allegedly left fireworks underneath public toilets, causing explosions whenever pressure was applied to the seats.

Bexar County court records show Paul Alden posted bond on Aug. 1 following his arrest on one count of arson causing reckless damage of a building or bodily injury.

According to the affidavit cited by KENS-TV, the explosions occurred at different Wash Tub car wash locations across San Antonio and in nearby areas. The first one reportedly occurred July 20. Surveillance video showed a male walking into a unisex bathroom. Soon after that, another person entered and a small explosion took place. A woman involved in the first incident reportedly sustained injuries but did not stay at the car wash when police arrived.

On July 26, there were allegedly two more similar incidents involving a Wash Tub employee and a young girl. They were also injured, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

USA Today reports detectives found “pressure activated” fireworks, which are sold publicly, under the toilets. The fireworks were reportedly positioned so they would detonate when someone sat on the toilet.

Alden is allegedly a “regular customer” at the car wash and used a membership card. He was reportedly seen on camera walking in and out of the bathrooms, sitting in the lobby area, and leaving when the explosions occurred.

Wash Tub told KENS in a statement, “We are very pleased with the quick action of SAPD and the arson investigator working this case. We will continue to fully cooperate with SAPD and the District Attorney’s office.”

  • Fact Check: Yes, more Minnesotans move to Florida than the reverse. The trend predates Tim Walz’s governorship

Shortly after Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, claims about the politician, and his state, started flying.

One came all the way from sunny Florida.

“In 2021, Minnesotans were roughly five times more likely to move to Florida than vice versa,” Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, posted Aug. 6 on X. “They were fleeing a state that, under Gov. Tim Walz, turned its back on law and order, increased taxes, and imposed unscientific coronavirus restrictions, harming children and destroying businesses.”

Data shows that DeSantis’ figure is close, if a little inflated. In 2021, almost four times as many Minnesotans moved to Florida than Floridians moved to Minnesota in 2021. It was still high in 2022, the last year for which data is available, but the difference shrank by almost half — about two times as many Minnesotans moved to Florida than the inverse.

When looking historically at the two states’ migration numbers, population and migration research experts said some of the significance DeSantis attached to it falls away. For years, more people have moved from upper Midwestern states to Florida than vice versa.

People have varying motivations to move to a state such as Florida, including taxes, which DeSantis mentioned. But experts said it can be difficult to pin population movement on any one policy, person or circumstance. Other Midwestern states, some under Republican administrations, had similar, if not higher, out-migration numbers to Florida.

“Many people from the upper midwest — many of whom lived with cold weather all their lives — look forward to retiring in a warm weather state like Florida, and this doesn’t have anything to do with liberal policies,” said Jennifer Lynne Van Hook, director of the Population Research Institute at Penn State University.

For example, Republican-led Iowa saw migration patterns similar to Minnesota’s, she said. In 2021, 7 out of 10,000 Iowans moved to Florida, compared with 1.6 out of 10,000 Floridians who moved to Iowa.

DeSantis’ office, pointing to U.S. Census data, said that over 2021-22, “up to five people moved to Florida from Minnesota for every person moving out of Florida to Minnesota.” This comes out to about four times as many Minnesotans moving to Florida than the inverse.

    Tracking the migration

The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey tracks the number of people who move from state to state each year. This migration data has been available annually since 2005, though there was no release in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stefan Rayer, director of the University of Florida’s Population Program in the Bureau of Economic and Business Research, reviewed 2021 Census data and calculated that about 10,156 people moved from Minnesota to Florida and about 2,712 from Florida to Minnesota — a net gain of 7,444 people for Florida.

This amounts to an in-out ratio (the number of in-migrants divided by the number of out-migrants) of about 3.74 for Florida, Rayer said. In other words, in Florida there were 3.74 in-migrants from Minnesota for every out-migrant to Minnesota, which is close, but not quite as high, as DeSantis’ “five times” figure.

The latest available Census data, from 2022, shows a smaller gain for Florida, with about 9,192 Minnestoans moving to the state and 4,521 Floridians moving to Minnesota — a 2.03 in-out ratio for Florida.

These numbers have fluctuated over the years, experts said, but historically, more people move from Minnesota to Florida than the other way around, matching the migration patterns of several other Midwestern states.

For example, since 2005, Florida has gained a net 9,800 people from Illinois per year, 9,100 from Michigan, and about 8,900 from Ohio, Census data shows. Illinois and Michigan are both Democratic-led, while Ohio is Republican.

But the Minnesota-to-Florida population loss is far lower than any of those states. Since 2005, Florida has gained a net 2,800 people per year from Minnesota.

For most of the 2010s, Minnesota’s population rate grew more slowly than the U.S. as a whole, the Minnesota Reformer reported in July. In 2018, the year before Walz took office, the state’s population growth ran about one-tenth of a percentage point above the national average, the nonprofit news site reported, based on U.S. Census data. That held for several years before being scrambled by the COVID-19 pandemic. “By 2022, when comparable numbers were again available for both the U.S. and Minnesota, both had fallen sharply,” the report said. It pointed to more people moving out of the state than into it and said a similar trend was seen in other cold, northern states.

When evaluating migration, population sizes also play a role, experts said: Florida’s population is almost four times as large as Minnesota’s.

When adjusting for population size, the share of Minnesotans who moved to Florida was still greater than the inverse in 2022, Van Hook found. About 16 out of 10,000 Minnesotans moved to Florida that year, she said, compared with 2 out of every 10,000 Floridians who moved to Minnesota.

What drives people to move, or whether certain factors make people more or less likely to migrate to another state, is another story.

“There are of course myriads of reasons why people move from one place to another,” Rayer said. “Florida tends to have a positive net migration balance with many states, which is due at least in part to retirement migration.”

Richard Florida, a University of Toronto professor who has studied urban migration, told PolitiFact that there’s historically been a pattern of migration from the so-called frost belt, the region near the Great Lakes where heavy snowfall is common, to the Sun Belt, which stretches from Florida to California, generally across the Southeast and Southwest.

“That was driven by factors like climate, of course. But also jobs and affordable housing,” he said. “Of course, those things have declined because of the pandemic and the shift in population. In some sunbelt cities, housing prices have risen, and many frost belt cities now number among the most affordable.”

    Our ruling

DeSantis said Minnesotans were “five times more likely” to move to Florida than vice versa in 2021, and blamed Walz’s policies.

Almost four times as many Minnesotans moved to Florida than Floridians moved to Minnesota, according to 2021 Census data. That held in 2022, but the difference shrank by nearly half.

Experts said this is part of a longstanding migration pattern that isn’t limited to Minnesota or Walz’s tenure. For years, more people have moved from upper Midwestern states to Florida than vice versa. Other states, some Republican-led, saw similar if not higher out-migration numbers to Florida.

People’s motivations for moving to a different state are hard to pin down, so it is possible some people may have moved because they liked Florida’s policies. People who migrate from upper Midwestern states to Florida often move for retirement, lower taxes and warmer climate, migration experts said.

DeSantis’ statement is partially accurate, but it leaves out important details or takes things out of context. We rate it Half True.

Transforming the Housing and Development Landscape, One Project at a Time

In the world of real estate development and construction, Eric Martinez has emerged as a seasoned expert, blending his skills as an architect, contractor, and entrepreneur. Martinez’s journey to success began with a serendipitous encounter during his high school years, when a perceptive art teacher recognized his unwavering passion for designing buildings and bridges. This chance encounter set him on a trajectory towards architecture and construction, leading to the establishment of his own firm, Urbatect Development, LLC.

Before founding Urbatect Development, Martinez had a distinguished career as an executive in renowned real estate development and construction companies. However, he felt constrained by corporate protocols and procedures, which hindered his ability to reach his full potential. The lack of inspiration and fulfillment drove him to make a life-altering decision: to create a business where he could push himself to greater challenges and simultaneously empower his team, partners, vendors, clients, and communities. With a wealth of experience in leadership, strategic planning, and business growth, Martinez embarked on an entrepreneurial journey to establish Urbatect Development.

Starting any business presents numerous challenges, and Urbatect Development was no exception. In its early stages, the company faced obstacles such as assembling the right team, establishing efficient procedures, securing sufficient cash flows, and overcoming the skepticism that often accompanies a new business. Gaining the trust of larger clients was particularly challenging, as they naturally gravitate towards established firms with proven track records. However, through unwavering dedication, meticulous planning, and the support of a talented team, Martinez and Urbatect Development addressed these hurdles, paving the way for future success.

A pivotal moment that significantly impacted Urbatect Development’s trajectory occurred when Martinez was offered a lucrative seven-figure contract to return to the corporate world. Despite the financial strain the company was experiencing at the time, Martinez made a courageous decision, declining the offer and remaining committed to his entrepreneurial vision. In hindsight, this bold choice proved instrumental in the company’s subsequent achievements, confirming that Martinez’s unwavering belief in Urbatect Development was well-placed.

Drawing from his own experiences, Martinez offers valuable advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and those struggling to gain traction with their businesses. He emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from mentors and coaches who have traversed similar paths, thereby avoiding unnecessary mistakes and accelerating growth. Establishing long-term partnerships, continuously providing value, and making strategic decisions are all crucial components of building a successful business. Martinez believes in prioritizing excellence, problem-solving, and ensuring impeccable service to clients and stakeholders as cornerstones of reputation-building.

Expanding beyond California and Washington, the firm’s construction team is venturing into other states such as Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and Colorado. He emphasizes the importance of perseverance and learning from the experiences of others to avoid unnecessary setbacks. By cultivating a proactive approach, prioritizing excellence, and continuously improving procedures and structures, entrepreneurs can navigate the complexities of business and achieve long-term success.

While building a business requires dedication and hard work, Martinez encourages entrepreneurs not to overlook the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. In the initial stages, when the demands of the business are high, it may seem challenging to find time for personal life. However, Martinez advises finding a reliable business partner who can share the responsibilities and help achieve a better equilibrium. Once the business stabilizes, entrepreneurs should focus on self-care, including maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and quality sleep. Taking a proactive approach to managing stress and staying organized is vital to sustain one’s sanity in the demanding world of entrepreneurship. Additionally, carving out time for family and fun activities rejuvenates the mind and fuels further success.

Looking ahead, Urbatect Development has an exciting array of initiatives in the pipeline. While already one of the largest builders for ADUs, their aim is to dominate the industry and provide families with high-quality, innovative housing solutions.

JD Vance Approaches Kamala Harris at Wisconsin Airport

Harris has not held a press conference or answered questions from reporters since she overtook the top slot on the Democrat ticket.

    BREITBART

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (OH), unlike establishment media reporters, is unafraid to question Democrat presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris about her radical record and coup-turned-campaign.

Vance approached Air Force Two, which Harris was onboard, during a tense standoff on Tuesday in which the current and perhaps future vice president occupied the same Wisconsin runway.

“I just wanted to check out my future plane,” Vance said, Semafor reported.

Vance did not speak to Harris but said he “wanted to go say hello to the vice president and ask her why does she refuse to answer questions.”

It is not immediately clear if Harris remained on her jet or exited and escaped Vance.

Vance tweeted after the standoff, “I thought the reporters traveling with Kamala might be a little lonely given that she never answers questions from them, so I figured I’d come say hello and check out my new plane while I was at it.”

  • Colo. mom pleads guilty to strangling infant son, driving around with his body for 'several hours'

BOULDER, Colo. (TCN) — A woman will spend the next several decades in prison after she pleaded guilty to killing her infant son and driving around with his body.

The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday, Aug. 7, that Anna Englund entered the plea for second-degree murder and was subsequently sentenced to 40 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

According to the district attorney’s office, on June 10, 2023, the father of Englund’s 2-month-old child called the Boulder Police Department said he was “concerned for the mother’s mental health” and had been ever since she gave birth to their son, Miles. The boy’s father said he “had been paying close attention to the mother and the baby.” On the day of the incident, the father went to the bathroom and Englund fled with Miles.

Englund reportedly drove to another location and strangled Miles to death. She drove around with the boy’s body “for several hours while law enforcement was frantically searching for them.”

Police said they located her driving toward Boulder Community Hospital at 10:20 p.m., about six hours after she fled with her infant. Police made contact with her in the parking lot and rushed the boy into the emergency room. He was pronounced deceased at 10:48 p.m.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a news release, “This guilty plea and lengthy sentence is the right result in this very sad case.”

  • Over 3,000% Hike in Illegal Aliens on Terror Watchlist, DHS Frees Dozens in U.S., Judges Grant Bail

Under Vice President Kamala Harris’s laughable tenure as the Biden administration’s border czar a record number of illegal immigrants on the terrorist watchlist have entered the United States through the southwest border and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), created after 9/11 to protect the country from another terrorist attack, has released at least 99 into American communities. That is not all. Immigration judges have granted bail to at least 27 illegal aliens on the terrorist watchlist, asylum to at least four and terminated the cases of two known or suspected terrorists, according to startling government figures embedded in a congressional report released this week.

The data, which covers three-and-a-half years of the Biden administration, illustrates that the damage produced by its flagrant open border policies is even worse than previously imagined and the derelict measures have clearly generated serious national security issues. During the Biden-Harris tenure an astounding 5.4 million illegal immigrants have been released into the United States with an additional 2 million known “gotaways” escaping into the country, the report, published by the House Judiciary Committee, reveals. “Among those more than 7.3 million illegal aliens are 375 illegal aliens on the U.S. government’s terrorist watchlist who have been apprehended by Border Patrol under President Biden’s and Vice President Harris’s watch,” the document reads. “That is a more than 3,000 percent increase of watchlisted alien encounters compared to all four years of the Trump Administration.”

The illegal immigrants on the terrorist watchlist encountered by Border Patrol between fiscal years 2021 and 2023 come from 36 different countries, including nations with an active terrorist presence such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Mauritania, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Yemen. The probe found that so far in fiscal year 2024, which ends in September, federal agents along the Mexican border have encountered tens of thousands of illegal immigrants from countries that could present national security risks, including 2,134 Afghan nationals, 33,347 Chinese, 541 Iranians, 520 Syrians and 3,104 Uzbeks. Just weeks ago, federal authorities released into the country three of eight Tajik nationals with potential ties to the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) after using the Biden administration’s fraud-infested CBP One phone application to schedule appointments at ports of entry. Four were caught by federal agents while crossing the border and one arrived at a port of entry without scheduling an appointment through the app.

“The crisis at the southwest border caused by the Biden-Harris Administration has raised serious national security risks, with the number of potential terrorists encountered at the southwest border skyrocketing since January 2021,” the report confirms. The document includes recent congressional testimony from FBI Director Christopher Wray acknowledging that untold scores of potential terrorists have also entered the U.S. because they were not on the terrorist watchlist at the time DHS released them into the country. “[T]here has been a lot of focus on the number of known or suspected terrorists encountered at the border,” Wray told lawmakers in July. “And that number has increased over the last five or six years, and that should be of concern. But frankly, to me, the bigger concern is individuals who weren’t, either weren’t on the [terrorist] watchlist at the time they came in because there wasn’t information known yet that ties them to terrorism, and it is only after they get in that some new piece of information develops somewhere overseas and now we know. That is a bigger concern.”

Just this week Judicial Watch reported that one of the Jordanian illegal immigrants released from federal custody after being charged for trying to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico appears on a terror watch list. His name is Hasan Yousef Hamdan, a 32-year-old who crossed into California from Mexico earlier this year and was issued a 2026 deportation court date, according to records obtained by Judicial Watch. Though the government has consistently denied that Hamdan represented a threat or appeared on the terrorist watchlist a Marine Corps Serious Incident Report (SIR) obtained by Judicial Watch via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) says that an ICE officer “telephonically confirmed” to the Marine Criminal Investigations Division (CID) that “Hamdan was on a terror watch list.”

  • Fact Check: This video was computer-generated, it doesn’t show a plane crashing into the Milad Tower

A Facebook post shows a video of a plane seemingly crashing into a tower and exploding. The July 31 post includes texts that says “Plane crash” and “Live”.

Screenshot of FB post from July 31, 2024.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

A reverse image search of the Facebook video led us to an image of the Milad Tower, a communications tower in Tehran, Iran.

PolitiFact found no credible media reports of a plane crashing into Milad Tower in 2024. We also searched the Nexis news database, but found no reports of the alleged crash. We found no official statements or social media posts about such a crash.

The name “hadi shafegh” appears at the end of the video. A social media search for that name led us to the Instagram, TikTok and YouTube profiles of a user who defines himself as a “video creator.” On his TikTok and YouTube pages he says he creates 3D promotional videos, visual effects and computer-generated images.

PolitiFact contacted Shafegh via Telegram. He confirmed that the publication does not show a real video, and that it’s a video he made with a computer.

On his Instagram and TikTok accounts we found the same video of the plane crashing into a tower, posted July 13. The text accompanying the Instagram posts says in Farsi Milad Tower, graphic effect, according to a translation provided by Instagram.

On TikTok, Shafegh posted another video of an exploding tower with the caption, “Tower distraction part 2.” That video shows a plane crashing into the tower and an up close shot of the destruction.

Shafegh also posted other videos on his social media using computer-generated images of planes and helicopters crashing into iconic landmarks, such as the Tower of Pisa in Italy or the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

We rate the claim that a plane crashed into the Milad Tower on July 31 as False.
