GA tries navigating 2024 election while investigating unresolved disputes of 2020

Fulton County’s handling of the 2020 presidential election is to be reexamined as new rules for election certification may impact the November election.

    By Natalia Mittelstadt

As Georgia prepares for the 2024 presidential election with implementing new rules and procedures, some unresolved 2020 election disputes remain, with the State Election Board opening an investigation into an issue it previously closed.

Heading into this year’s presidential election cycle, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is implementing election security measures as the Georgia State Election Board is enacting new rules that could impact the November election and investigating 2020 presidential election issues.

On Wednesday, the SEB voted to request that state GOP Attorney General Chris Carr reopen an investigation into Fulton County’s counting of the results of the 2020 election.

The request comes after the board closed the matter in May, but voted to install an independent election monitor for the 2024 election, after an independent investigation found that the county likely scanned thousands of ballots twice in a recount of the 2020 election.

The election board approved the new resolution in a 3-2 vote. The resolution states that if Carr does not conduct an investigation, the board will try to find an outside lawyer to conduct the inquiry.

“We take election integrity very seriously, and we will apply the constitution, the law and the facts as we have always done,” Carr’s spokesperson, Kara Murray, told the Associated Press. “If supported by evidence, we will not hesitate to prosecute voter fraud.”

The new request is expected to be met with legal action by Fulton County after its election board said in May that its ruling was final and that it could not reopen any other cases related to the 2020 election. Carr has also reportedly warned that reopening the matter would be illegal.

The SEB also approved a new rule Tuesday that allows county election boards to make a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results.

The rule states that certification occurs “after reasonable inquiry that the tabulation and canvassing of the election are complete and accurate and that the results are a true and accurate accounting of all votes cast in that election.”

Michael Heekin, a member of the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections, presented the proposed rule to the SEB on Tuesday, arguing the importance of election officials ensuring that results are not affected by irregularities before asserting their accuracy, the Georgia Recorder reported.

“You have to look at how the election was run,” Heekin said. “Were there problems? Was it a carefree election, or was it a snake bit? … You would quantify what you need to know in discussions with the professional staff that run the elections.”

In May, Heekin’s fellow board member Julie Adams filed a lawsuit against the county, board and election director, in which she claimed county Elections Director Nadine Williams prevented her from accessing information and performing her duties.

The lawsuit was filed before Adams abstained from certifying the May 21 primary election in the county on May 28.

Her lawsuit argues the Democratic Party of Georgia sent a letter to the election board members “asserting that certification is a ministerial duty, and the failure to vote in favor of certification is subject to potential legal action, including but not limited to possible criminal sanctions.”

Following the SEB meeting, Raffensperger, a Republican, posted on his X account Wednesday morning: “Georgia’s Election Integrity Act requires counties to certify the election results by November 12th and we fully anticipate that counties will follow the law.”

Raffensperger told Just the News on Thursday, “As Secretary of State, I have taken unprecedented steps to continue to secure Georgia’s elections. I am the first Secretary of State to have photo ID for all forms of voting and the first to conduct a citizenship check audit of its voter rolls. Georgia got it right when we passed the Georgia Election Integrity Act, known as SB 202, and it appears that this board seeks to undermine the General Assembly and its legislation.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary of State’s Office has announced several election security measures over the last month.

On Monday, Raffensperger announced the Ballot Scout tool from Enhanced Voting, which allows voters to track their absentee ballots from the time they are issued to when county elections offices receive them from voters.

Late last month, the launch of a new web portal was announced by the Secretary of State’s Office, on which voters can cancel their voter registration online.

“This is a convenient tool for any voter who wants to secure their voter registration by cancelling their old one when they move out of state,” Raffensperger said in a statement. “It will also help keep Georgia’s voter registration database up-to-date without having to rely on postcards being sent and returned by an increasingly inefficient postal system.”

Voters must provide their driver’s license, state ID, or Social Security number to cancel their registration.

In early July, Raffensperger’s office announced that it was in the process of auditing voter rolls through the Department of Homeland Security’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database to ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote.

Non-citizens who attempt to register to vote in Georgia may face a felony charge with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $100,000.

  • Woman sentenced in fatal shooting of high school classmate who allegedly wanted to date her

HOUSTON (TCN) — A 22-year-old woman will spend more than two decades in prison for her role in the 2018 shooting death of a classmate who reportedly faked being a gang member.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office announced that a jury convicted Keona Mouton on Tuesday, Aug. 6, of the murder of 18-year-old Delindsey Mack. She subsequently received a sentence of 23 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, on Nov. 13, 2018, a then-16-year-old Mouton, “lured Mack to an after-school meeting” at Lamar High School, where two other men fatally shot the victim.

One of the shooters, Kendrick Johnson, was a gang member linked to at least six other slayings, and he was sentenced in 2021 to life in prison in connection with Mack’s death. The second shooter has not yet been identified or arrested.

Prosecutors said Johnson was the “main sniper” for a local gang and even “staked out the funerals of rivals that he had killed to look for more targets.”

Another man, Dave’on Thomas, reportedly acted as the getaway driver and received his sentence last year of 50 years in prison.

According to the district attorney’s office, Mack, who was allegedly interested in dating Mouton, sustained seven gunshot wounds in the ambush.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing gang war. Social media posts reportedly described Mack as a gang member, but prosecutors said he was “known to be an outstanding football player.” He had recently transferred from Yates High School to get away from gang violence.

KHOU-TV reports that Mack’s father said his son faked being a gang member on social media out of fear, and the victim’s “alternate persona” made him a target.

Macks father reportedly commented, “It’s sad that someone can create a persona on social media that makes someone hate them that bad.”

In a statement, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said, “This was not just an ambush, but an execution that was planned and carried out by several people, and we want to hold all of them responsible to get justice for the victim and his family.”

  • Fact Check: Yes, Tim Walz signed a law letting immigrants illegally in Minnesota get driver’s licenses

U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., in a Fox News interview claimed that Democrats are wrongly trying to portray Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as a moderate.

Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, “is a radical progressive,” who wants “open borders,” Donalds said Aug. 6.

“Tim Walz signed into law driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants in Minnesota, he wanted health care for illegal immigrants in Minnesota, this guy is incredibly left-wing,” Donalds said.

Donalds repeated his claim on X, listing things that he said represented “The real Tim Walz.”

U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber, R-Minn., and social media posts on TikTok and X repeated similar claims about Walz’s record.

On March 7, 2023, as Minnesota governor, Walz signed H.F. 4, a bill that expanded access to driver’s licenses to people in the state, regardless of their immigration status. State House and Senate Democrats broadly supported the measure, and only one House Republican supported it.

This law reversed a 2003 order by former Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty that barred the state from issuing licenses to people who were in the country illegally.

Walz said in March 2023 that the bill would make roads safer and that he was a “longtime supporter of this bill.”

“Ensuring drivers in our state are licensed and carry insurance makes the roads safer for all Minnesotans,” Walz said.

PolitiFact contacted Donalds’ office, but got no response. The Harris-Walz campaign did not comment. The Minnesota governor’s office did respond, either.

About 81,000 people are living illegally in Minnesota, the Migration Policy Institute, a think tank, estimates. Minnesota’s population is about 5.7 million people.

    2023 law

The law took effect Oct. 1, 2023, and it lets immigrants lacking permanent legal status obtain a standard Minnesota driver’s license or identification card.

To obtain a driver’s license, people must:

    • Present two identifying documents, such as an unexpired international passport or a foreign birth certificate, a consular card or evidence of current Minnesota residency.

    • Attest that they live in Minnesota.

    • Pay the license or ID legal fees.

    • Pass a written test on the rules of the road and a driving skills test.

Minnesota is the most recent state to pass this type of legislation. The District of Columbia and 18 other states, including California, Colorado and New York, have also enacted laws to let people illegally in the U.S. obtain driver’s licenses.

    Our ruling

Donalds said, “Tim Walz signed into law driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants in Minnesota.”

That’s correct. Walz signed a bill in 2023 expanding access to driver’s licenses regardless of immigration status in Minnesota.

Minnesota is one of 19 states that lets people illegally in the country apply for a driver’s license.

    We rate Donalds’ claim True.

Joe Rogan: State of Free Speech in the UK is Worse Than Russia

More people arrested for “hateful” tweets.

    modernity

    Paul Joseph Watson

Responding to the recent authoritarian crackdown, Joe Rogan pointed out that more people get arrested in the UK for “thought crimes” on social media than they do in Russia.

“Terrible government overreach – you’re seeing it now in England where people are getting arrested for tweets,” said the podcast host.

“People talk about Soviet Russia, like how bad Russia is in terms of cracking down on thought police and cracking down on bad tweets and things like that,” he added

Rogan then compared how Russia polices free speech on social media compared to the UK.

In Russia, only around 400 people are arrested each year for ‘hateful’ tweets, while that number is around 3,300 in the UK.

“The fact that they’re comfortable with finding people who’ve said something they disagree with and putting them in a fucking cage in England in 2024 is really wild,” said Rogan.

He then drew attention to a recent statement by Stephen Parkinson, the Director of Public Prosecutions, who told Sky News that merely retweeting information about the UK riots could lead to criminal charges.

Rogan pointed out that the term “hateful” is completely subjective “and in our lifetime we’ve seen that get moved,” before explaining how ‘deadnaming’ a transgender person by referring to them by their original name is now treated as “hateful”.

As we highlighted yesterday, a woman in Cheshire was arrested for tweeting “inaccurate information” about the killer of three girls in Southport.

Meanwhile, one of the latest arrests in the UK in the aftermath of the riots is of a man who wrote “filthy bastards” on Facebook alongside an emoji of an ethnic minority person and a gun.

He will now spend the next 12 weeks in prison.

  • Fact Check: Gov. Tim Walz signed law giving some Minnesota students, including migrants, free in-state tuition

Republican critics of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris, have focused on his immigration policies.

“Not only did Governor Tim Walz sign legislation giving free college and free health care to illegal immigrants, but he sat on the sidelines and watched Minneapolis burn for four days straight,” U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., wrote Aug. 6 on X.

We are examining Walz’s record on health care for people in the country illegally and his response to riots after George Floyd’s May 2020 death in separate fact-checks. Here, we wanted to check whether Walz offered “free college … to illegal immigrants.

The Republican National Committee’s X account, conservative pundit Charlie Kirk and former National Intelligence Acting Director Richard Grenell made similar claims about tuition.

The short story: Walz signed a scholarship program into law that covers tuition at Minnesota public colleges and universities for students who meet family income restrictions. Students in the country illegally qualify for the aid under certain conditions.

Program covers public college tuition for need-based eligible students

In May 2023, Walz signed the North Star Promise Scholarship into law.

The program, part of a larger higher education bill, awards tuition scholarships to eligible students whose families earn less than $80,000. Scholarship amounts will vary; the state would pay what isn’t covered by a student’s grants, financial aid and scholarships.

Students eligible for the Minnesota Dream Act can apply for the scholarship. That 2013 law, which came during Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton’s administration, makes students who attended a Minnesota high school for at least three years and graduated or received a GED certificate in Minnesota eligible for certain benefits, even if they are in the country illegally. Benefits include access to in-state tuition, state financial aid and private aid to attend Minnesota public colleges and universities.

The Walz-backed scholarship program begins in the 2024-25 school year, “so as of now, no Minnesotan has received funding through the program yet,” said Keith Hovis, communications director for Minnesota’s Office of Higher Education.

To keep the scholarship, students must satisfy their college or university’s GPA standards.

In the 2021-22 school year, 314 Minnesotan students received financial aid through the Minnesota Dream Act. However, not everyone who is eligible for financial aid qualifies for the scholarship program, Hovis said.

In May, the Minnesota Legislature renewed the scholarship program. The original bill earmarked $117 million for the program. The second bill transferred $5 million of that money to a different college tuition grant program for certain students who went through foster care. Eligible students who are in the U.S. illegally also qualify for that grant.

A Republican senator introduced an amendment to restrict the scholarship program to only  students legally residing in Minnesota. But the amendment failed in a 34-33 party-line vote with Democrats in the majority.

The Migration Policy Institute, a think tank, estimates that 81,000 people in the U.S. illegally live in Minnesota. The Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy, a left-leaning think tank, reported that immigrants in Minnesota illegally contributed around $222 million in state tax revenue in 2022.

    Our ruling

Graham said Walz signed “legislation giving free college … to illegal immigrants.”

Graham’s statement is onto something, but is a touch too broad.

Walz signed two higher education bills in 2023 and 2024 that covered tuition costs at Minnesota’s public colleges and universities for students whose families earn less than $80,000 annually.

Students who are illegally in the U.S. can apply for this tuition aid if they have attended a Minnesota school for at least three years, graduated or received a GED certificate in Minnesota and satisfied other requirements for income and maintaining their school’s GPA standards.

We rate Graham’s statement Mostly True.

  • The Journey of Daniel Adegahi – The US Times

Daniel Adegahi, known online as mrdanikings, has an inspiring story that spans from the medical field to the tech world. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Benue State University, Daniel’s journey took a surprising turn when he discovered a passion for technology and content creation.

“I loved sharing knowledge, so I became a tech creator. I love helping people, so I became a nurse,” Daniel explains. Currently studying nursing in his 500 level, his dual passion for teaching and assisting others is at the heart of his success.

Daniel’s venture into tech began in 2018 when he started sharing his thoughts about his iPhone on social media. He talked about what he loved, what he disliked, the issues he faced, and how he solved them. His honest and straightforward approach quickly resonated with people. “I didn’t expect it to take off the way it did,” Daniel recalls. “By 2020, I had gained significant recognition on TikTok. People started reaching out to me with their tech problems, and I was happy to help.”

Years ago, Daniel went viral in a controversial video where he was seen urging people to opt for an Android phone for N100,000 instead of an Iphone for the same amount. As someone who is familiar with tech, he was able to back his claims with points. He stated that an Android phone has so many features compared to an Iphone especially at the same price range.

According to him, it’s much safer to get a durable Android phone that to join the trend of Iphone users with that amount of money.

As his audience grew, so did the demand for his expertise. Daniel decided to take a bold step and establish a studio in Makurdi. He employed friends and coursemates, expanding his brand’s offerings and teaching others what he had learned. Today, MrDanikings Tech conducts both online and offline classes, educating national and international students in photography, videography, technology, and content creation.

“Starting the studio was a big step,” Daniel says. “But it was worth it. Seeing my team and our students grow is incredibly rewarding.”

Daniel is currently focused on raising up creators like himself to have a voice in the tech world. He also partners with reputable brands to advertise the best products. His goals are clear: expand his reach and influence, enhance educational offerings, and collaborate with leading tech brands. “I want to grow our audience across all social media platforms and provide valuable learning experiences for students worldwide,” he says.

Despite the challenges, such as limited technological infrastructure in Nigeria and fluctuating internet speeds, Daniel remains undeterred. His motto, “Empower through knowledge, inspire through innovation,” drives his work and motivates him to keep pushing boundaries.

From nursing to tech, he has shown that with dedication and a love for helping others, it’s possible to make a significant impact in any field. “I’m excited about the future,” Daniel concludes. “There’s so much more to achieve and so many more people to help.”
