  • Fact Check: Federal appeals court rules in favor of PolitiFact and Meta against Children’s Health Defense

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California ruled in favor of PolitiFact and its parent organization in a lawsuit filed by Children’s Health Defense, a legal advocacy group founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The Aug. 9 ruling affirmed the district court’s dismissal of a complaint brought by the Children’s Health Defense against Meta Platforms and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The lawsuit also named the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, PolitiFact’s owner and publisher, and Science Feedback, another Meta fact-checker..

The lawsuit alleged that PolitiFact blocked the group from displaying the article on its Facebook page, and more generally that it collaborated with Facebook and government and international entities — including the World Health Organization, the White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — “to suppress vaccine safety speech with a ‘warning label’ and other similar types of notices which, while purporting to flag misinformation, in reality censor valid and truthful speech, including content posted by (Children’s Health Defense) on its Facebook page regarding vaccines.”

The appellate court majority held that Children’s Health Defense “failed to meet the first requirement for state action because the source of CHD’s alleged harm was Meta’s own policy of censoring, not any provision of federal law. The evidence suggested that Meta had independent incentives to moderate content and exercised its own judgment in so doing.”

Children’s Health Defense “failed to allege any facts” that showed an agreement between the federal government and Meta on addressing misinformation about vaccines, the court said.

Circuit Judge Eric D. Miller, who was nominated by then-President Donald Trump, wrote the majority opinion.

“Meta evidently believes that vaccines are safe and effective and that their use should be encouraged,” Miller wrote. “It does not lose the right to promote those views simply because they happen to be shared by the government.”

The panel’s decision was 2-1, with U.S. Circuit Judge Daniel P. Collins issuing a partial concurrence, and partial dissent. Collins wrote that Children’s Health Defense had shown it could plausibly allege a First Amendment claim against Meta for non-monetary relief but agreed that all of the other claims against defendants were properly dismissed.

In August 2020, Kennedy’s Children’s Health Defense sued the Poynter Institute in federal court accusing PolitiFact of wrongly ruling false another website’s claim that the flu vaccine was “significantly associated” with an increased risk of coronavirus.

Susan Illston, a judge sitting in the U.S. District Court for California’s Northern District, dismissed those claims in June 2021.

Children’s Health Defense CEO Mary Holland said in a statement that the organization was “extremely disappointed” with the 9th Circuit decision: “If we cannot stop the government’s joint action with Big Tech to censor unwanted information, our First Amendment is a pyrrhic victory — it means almost nothing in our real world of social media.”

Holland said plaintiffs are “considering our legal options,” including petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mark Caramanica, who argued the case on behalf of Poynter in the appellate court, praised the decision.

“The Ninth Circuit rightfully recognized that CHD’s claims of coordination between government and independent fact-checking journalism outfits like PolitiFact simply held no water,” Caramanica said. “The decision is a win for journalism and the marketplace of ideas to combat the spread of misinformation online.”

PolitiFact’s 2020 fact-check examined a claim that the flu vaccine was significantly associated with an increased risk of coronavirus infection. The claim tracks back to an April 2020 story from the website collective-evolution.com. That story in turn cites research from the U.S. Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch. PolitiFact’s reporting, which relied on expert interviews, found that the Armed Forces study did not support the conclusion and headline of the collective-evolution.com article. The study on respiratory viruses predated COVID-19’s arrival in the United States.

Collective-evolution.com changed the headline and article after PolitiFact’s fact-check. The story has since been removed from the Collective-evolution.com website.

PolitiFact is an independent member of Meta’s Third-Party Fact-Checking Program. Meta contracts with fact-checking organizations such as PolitiFact to fact-check false content on Meta’s platforms.

Kennedy is running as an independent for president in 2024. Children’s Health Defense, which he founded in 2018 lists Kennedy as its chairman on leave.

  • From Farmer’s Daughter to Mortgage Maven – The US Times

The Inspiration Behind My Mortgage Mandy

Amanda Carstensen, also known as Mandy, is the entrepreneurial force behind My Mortgage Mandy.  Her journey began in a small farming town as the daughter of dryland wheat farmers, instilling in her the values of hard work and community spirit. “It’s important to me to be an active member of my community. It’s important to me to prioritize the people that I love. It’s important to me to have high standards for how I serve those that trust me with their business. Finding a way to incorporate all those things without having a lot of control in your business is very difficult. So, I decided to jump and take a risk on myself and my ability to be not only a go-getter, but more importantly a go-giver,” was her response when asked what motivated her to transition from a stable corporate job and start My Mortgage Mandy.

Carstensen’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident from a young age. As a child, she dreamt of starting a coffee stand in her hometown of 300 people. Although this dream didn’t materialize, her determination never wavered. Together with her husband, they explored various business ventures, from meal delivery kits to animal supply services, long before these ideas became mainstream.

Overcoming Challenges on the Path to Success

Every entrepreneurial journey has its hurdles, and Mandy Carstensen faced her fair share while building My Mortgage Mandy. There were a series of other business attempts. One of the early setbacks involved a yachting and wine tour business that failed to launch due to mechanical issues. The coffee business never panned out due to financing and timing. The business that did make it off the ground, their boat rental company, Go And Play Rentals, faced unexpected wildfire seasons that cut earnings. These experiences were tough, but they taught resilience and the importance of self-belief. After nearly 10 years in the corporate world as a finance manager she transitioned to the mortgage industry, right as rates shifted and started to dramatically rise. However, she remained steadfast, driven by her passion for helping people achieve their dream of homeownership. Despite the challenges, Mandy and her husband persisted, driven by their desire to shape their destinies and live free from corporate constraints. Mandy recalls. “I kept pushing, knowing how right this felt.”

    Key Milestones and Future Goals

A significant turning point for Mandy was realizing the amazing integration of her personal and professional lives. Attending a baby shower led to her first deal, highlighting the importance of community connections. This experience underscored how personal and professional goals can align, providing a fulfilling entrepreneurial path. Looking ahead, the goals for My Mortgage Mandy include expanding her reach and providing exceptional service to a broader audience. She aims to grow not just for herself and the buyers she helps, but also to create opportunities for others. Mandy aspires to be an employer who respects and builds with her team, reflecting her core values of community and high service standards.

Amanda Carstensen’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the rewards of following one’s passion. Through My Mortgage Mandy, she continues to make a meaningful impact in her community, one mortgage at a time.

  • Shielding Israel: Germany is still drawing the wrong lessons from the Holocaust | The Liberty Beacon

By Tarik Cyril Amar, a historian from Germany working at Koç University, Istanbul, on Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe, the history of World War II, the cultural Cold War, and the politics of memory

    @tarikcyrilamartarikcyrilamar.substack.comtarikcyrilamar.com

On 6 August, a court in Berlin sentenced a young woman called Ava Moayeri to a fine of €600 for shouting “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free.” One of Moayeri’s lawyers, Alexander Gorski, deplored this as “a rather dark day for freedom of expression in Germany.”

He’s right, even if his comment is an all too understated response to a scandalous miscarriage of justice. Indeed, it is hard to answer the question of what is wrong with this sentence, because, quite literally, everything is. Judge Birgit Balzer’s reasoning, for one thing, was embarrassingly sehoddy, irresponsibly misinformed, and thically and legally misguided, about which more below.

Beyond Balzer’s failure to do justice to the important issue she had to adjudicate, the case and sentence also represent a larger problem, in Germany and beyond: the West’s perverse pampering of Israel. One form taken by this pampering is to allow the Israeli regime to abuse the memory of the Holocaust, a genocide targeting Jews, to claim impunity for its own crimes against humanity, including genocide targeting Palestinians.

Balzer, too, explicitly invoked the Holocaust to justify her sentence. Yet Moayeri, the daughter of Communists from Iran, made clear that she has nothing to do with either glorifying violence or antisemitism. On the contrary, her concern is with showing solidarity to the Palestinian victims of Israeli violence and standing up for their rights. Balzer felt entitled to disregard this perfectly plausible position, attribute entirely unproven motives to Moayeri, and, on that fundamentally flawed basis, punish her. In effect, it is clear that Moayeri’s right to peaceful protest and a perfectly legitimate political position was suppressed to protect Israeli narratives from any challenge. And these narratives, in turn, are used to shield Israel from accountability for its crimes, and thus they also withhold help from Israel’s victims.

The facts of Moayeri’s case are not complicated. On 11 October 2023, she participated in a small protest outside a Berlin school, where she used the slogan “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free.” There was no violence – indeed, the demonstration explicitly criticized violence that had occurred at the school – and she was not charged with anything else. The prosecution argued that merely by shouting these words, Moayeri committed the crime of condoning another crime. By that, the prosecutor was referring to the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October.

Yet, in reality, Palestinians have an incontestable right to armed resistance under international law. While the attack also involved crimes – though far fewer than claimed by Israel (see below) – Palestinians do not commit a crime when fighting Israeli soldiers, which is what Hamas did to a large extent on 7 October. In Berlin, neither the prosecution nor the judge, however, seemed to care about this legal fact.

Judge Balzer instead agreed with the prosecution and added several arguments of her own: According to Balzer, the slogan “From the River to the Sea” denies “Israel’s right to exist.” Balzer also believes that the context of Moayeri’s use of the slogan – a few days after the Hamas attack – allows for only one interpretation, namely that Moayeri meant to condone the attack and “downplay its monstrous quality.” Balzer’s argument about context is not only absurd but astoundingly complacent, betraying an almost pitiable lack of self-awareness, but we will get back to that.

First, let’s look more closely at her other points: One issue that should surely have complicated Balzer’s simplistic approach is the fact that we by now know – including from Israeli media – that, on 7 October, many Israelis were deliberately killed not by Hamas but by Israeli forces, in an application of the so-called “Hannibal Directive”. A typically perverse and cynical policy, originally designed to allow Israeli soldiers to kill other Israeli soldiers so that they cannot be captured by Palestinian resistance fighters, on 7 October the Directive was used indiscriminately – in effect, against Israeli civilians, too. Therefore, much of Balzer’s “monstrous quality” of the events on 7 October actually came from the Israeli military. That is a well-established fact, not an opinion. So, basing her sentence on a biased, uninformed, and one-sided attribution of all the violence to Hamas alone already undermined its plausibility.

Regarding Israel’s “right to exist,” it is astounding to hear a judge dare advance this argument. Every jurist knows – or should know – that it is an incontrovertible fact of international law that states do not have such a right. Diplomatic recognition by other states is a matter of maintaining international relations, but it confers no “right to exist” to the recognized state. For instance, while one may regret their disappearance, absolutely no such “right” was infringed when, for instance, the former East Germany, the Soviet Union, or Czechoslovakia ceased to exist. In reality, peoples or nations – not states – have a right to self-determination. And it is Israel that has violently deprived the Palestinian people of that – actually existing – right as well as, of course, their land, and often lives.

Israel has, it is true, blanketed the global public sphere with such a barrage of disinformation about this basic fact (as about so many others) that ordinary mainstream media consumers are likely to be confused. Yet anyone with a claim to keeping informed and certainly a trained judge must know that this is merely an Israeli talking point, not a right.

Generally, Balzer, it seems, has a severe problem keeping political categories out of what should be her legal reasoning. She also brought that notorious German “Staatsräson” (reason of state) into play. In particular, she invoked the idea, formulated in public speeches in 2007 and 2008 by former Chancellor Angela Merkel, that, for Germany, what it misunderstands as Israel’s “security” and protecting Jews in Germany are part of that “Staatsräson.”

Yet while that notion has influenced several German laws, it has still no place in a court of law. For speeches, even by a state’s leader, do not establish law. Even the German parliament recognizes that “the concept of ‘Staatsräson’ is not employed either in the Basic Law [that is, the German constitution] nor in elementary legal precepts of German law. Therefore, it cannot be construed as a legal term. Rather, in German state practice today, it is understood as a political key principle.”

Balzer even regurgitated Israeli propaganda about decapitated babies and systematic mass rape by Hamas. Both stories are untrue and have been comprehensively disproved, as has been widely reported even in mainstream media. In fact, even US President Biden had to “walk back” his reckless repetition of these false atrocity tales. It is shameful to see a German judge not only repeat them but make them part of her reasoning in a legal finding. For these are not “merely” untruths but what we now call “weaponized disinformation” – or deliberate lies – that have been used to generate political cover and support for Israel’s Gaza genocide.

Finally, Balzer claimed that demanding a free Palestine on all its territory is necessarily the same as calling for the end to Israel. Frankly, and so what? Interestingly enough, the incoming head of EU foreign policy, Kaja Kallas from Estonia, has, in effect publicly and recklessly called for the end of Russia as a state, which seems not to provoke any objections in the West. And while Kallas is a catastrophe of incompetence and Russophobia, it is, actually, not a criminal offense to call for the end of a state because states do not have any right to exist (see above).

Moreover, in reality, the call for a free Palestine can also be understood as demanding not an end to Israel but a very different Israel, one that has abandoned its horrific racist and murderous regime and been absorbed into a successor state Palestine in which all inhabitants will have equal rights. Among well-informed and dispassionate contemporaries, we call this the one-state solution, and it has nothing to do with ethnic cleansing or antisemitism. It is also, in reality, the only way forward, because Israel’s endless bad faith and horrendous crimes have discredited all other models.

In sum, the sentence against Moayeri is a narrow-minded, politically motivated absurdity, and a disgrace for a country that prides itself on being a “Rechtsstaat,” a state of the rule of law. The law requires reason and abstention from bias. Both have been sorely lacking here. Fortunately, this sentence can be appealed, and it is as good as certain that it will be. Let’s hope that higher German courts won’t let this shameful gagging order pass.

Yet there is a larger point, an absurdity overshadowing all the other absurdities: Balzer, recall, based much of her unjust speculation about Moayeri’s motives on context. For the judge, the fact that Moayeri shouted “From the River to the Sea” several days after the Hamas attack of 7 October was proof that Moayeri must have meant it as supporting atrocious violence. Of course, that is nonsense. But, for a moment, let’s accept the judge’s flawed premise and apply it to Balzer herself: What is the context of her sentence, then? She has punished a young woman for daring to show solidarity with victims of Israel’s settler-colonial land stealing, its apartheid, and many other atrocities. But not just at any moment, but in the context of the ongoing crimes against humanity, transmitted from Gaza in real time into every home with a TV set and an internet connection.

Punishing those siding with victims of ongoing mass killings? Quite some context there for judge Balzer herself. One that a German should have recognized, precisely because, historically, Germany is also, historically, a country of genocide perpetrators. Because of that guilt, Germany’s “Staatsräson” should be to always side with the victims and never with the killers, not even indirectly.

A pity Germany’s elites still can’t grasp even that much.

  • JPMorgan Acquires First Republic After Seizure – The US Times

First Republic Bank was California’s troubled local lender. It was taken over by US authorities and sold to JPMorgan Chase. This was part of an effort to end the two-month long banking crisis which has shaken up the financial system. JPMorgan Chase, the biggest bank in the US will take over all First Republic deposits and “almost all” of its assets. Federal agency estimates it will be required to pay $13 billion from the deposit-insurance fund to cover First Republic’s losses. First Republic’s branches can reopen their doors as normal.

First Republic Bank, the second largest bank in US history by assets, collapsed after reporting that it had lost more than $100 billion in deposits during the first quarter. After the bank failed to come up with a viable rescue plan and its stock continued to plummet, the authorities intervened, inviting bids and taking control of the bank last week. First Republic was in limbo after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in March, which raised fears of a domino-effect on other regional banks. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon told reporters in a press conference before the US stock exchange opened that he hoped this would help stabilize everything.

The banking sector is in turmoil after the Federal Reserve changed its policy to combat inflation by raising interest rates aggressively, a move that has revalued assets significantly. Fed rates are expected to rise again this week. The FDIC announced the rescue package after rumors surfaced late last week. First Republic collapsed after a series of bank defaults, including those at Silvergate Bank and Signature Bank. First Republic’s assets, which stood at $233 billion by the end of march, are the second largest bank in US history. This excludes investment banks like Lehman Brothers.

The Remarkable Transformation of Kamala Harris: ‘TGINB’

    By: Deane Waldman

Until Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and Kamala Harris became the presumptive nominee, she was one of the most unpopular high-ranking politicians in recent times; on July 21, 2024, she became the apparent savior of the Democrat party and the nation.

How can one explain this remarkable turnaround when she has consistently been on the unpopular (leftist) side of the three big issues—crime, inflation, and the border—for Americans?

    Crime

When William McKay killed Riverside Deputy Sheriff Isaiah Cordero during a traffic stop, the three-strike convicted felon was not in custody because of Harris’s reduced bail rule, despite having been convicted of three previous violent crimes. Reduced (or no) bail policy along with charge reductions (from felonies to misdemeanors), and no crime at all if theft, viz., shoplifting, less than $950 — these were all elements of Harris’s pro-crime posture when she was District Attorney of San Francisco (2003-2010). Her policies turned one of the most popular travel destinations into a dangerous, crime-, garbage-, and needle-infested, homeless dominated “unlivable hellhole.”

She extended her pro-crime approach, adding defund the police, to all of California when she became that state’s Attorney General (2010-2017). Illegal immigration into the Golden State soared under her watch. Between the open border and Harris’s pro-crime attitude, gang violence in general, and particularly murders in Los Angeles, reached new highs. Out-migration from California accelerated to places less crime-ridden and lower taxes or rents.

As a senator (2017-2021), and despite being a former state prosecutor, Harris demonstrated her disdain for rule of law by aggressively supporting the arson, looting, general mayhem, and even murder by BLM/Antifa during the summer of 2020 riots. On social media, she exhorted Americans to donate bail money for the rioters.

While her law enforcement (or lack thereof) behavior gave her credibility with progressive ideologues, it did not sit well with the populace and contributed to her unpopularity.

    Inflation

Inflation is eating away at the purchasing power of Americans’ take-home pay, with prices of everyday goods up nearly 20 percent since Biden took office. The major contributor to inflation is federal deficit spending.

Harris’s record in the Senate is unimpressive except when it comes to spending money we don’t have. By casting her tie-breaking Senate vote, Harris approved the passage of Biden’s American Rescue Plan of 2021 and the falsely titled Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. With these two bills, Harris added $1.9 trillion and $1.2 trillion (respectively) to the national debt, exacerbating Americans’ pain at the grocery store or gas pump.

    Border/Illegal immigration

During his first week in office, President Joe Biden signed executive orders that reversed Trump’s border policies, particularly the Remain-in-Mexico measure. This opened the border to massive illegal immigration. Two months later, he put V.P. Harris in charge of the border crisis he had created, saying, “…Vice President [Harris] has agreed to lead our diplomatic efforts and our work … to…enhance migration enforcement.” Since Harris was placed in charge, there have been more than nine million illegal crossings, resulting in huge increases in human trafficking, drug deaths (especially fentanyl), fatalities among those attempting illegal entrance, terrorists gaining admission, and South American gang violence plaguing our cities, plus the massive expenses associated with transport, housing, food, and social services for nine million-plus illegals who also need (and receive) medical care.

Americans in need are acutely aware that the billions spent on illegals are monies that won’t be spent on them. They know who to blame.

    Sinner to Saint

Harris’s lack of action on illegal immigration, her voting to increase inflation, her encouragement of criminal activities, her vicious and unwarranted attacks on Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearings, along with her close affiliation with the “Squad” prove she is a hard leftist ideologue, clearly opposed to American values and out of step with the voters. When Harris’s public demeanor, her cackling, and her meaningless word salads are added to her actions, Harris’s unpopularity prior to July 21, 2024 becomes readily understandable. How then to explain Harris’s sudden transformation, with some polls saying Harris versus Trump 2024 is a “toss-up.” The latest poll, admittedly from the hyper-partisan New York Times, puts Harris ahead of Trump in three key battleground states.

How is this possible? How did she go from sinner to saint?

Five letters: TGINB. Thank God It’s Not Biden. Among undecideds, Independents, and especially Democrats, Biden had been finally exposed for what he is — a senile, corrupt professional politician, incompetent to lead our country, guaranteed to lose the 2024 election, and to take down-ticket Democrats with him. His performance at his debate with Trump and misnaming Harris as “Vice-President Trump” at the NATO Summit put the final nails in his political coffin.

The sense of relief that Biden is off the ticket, combined with angst over Trump’s constant vitriol, has translated into a bump in popularity for Harris. Nonetheless, she and her just-announced running mate, Tim Walz, both leftist radicals, would govern to exacerbate the three biggest woes of Americans: violent crime, an invasion of illegal entrants (including terrorists!), and prices for food, housing, and energy people can’t afford.

Maybe we should start a new hashtag, PPDESK. Please, Please, Don’t Elect Socialist Kamala!

  • The US Times Interviews Millionaire, Sashin Govender – The US Times

Sashin Govender, 29 Years Old, born and raised in Durban, South Africa has become the talk of the Town not just in Africa, but internationally.

Govender is a highly successful entrepreneur, renowned speaker, and expert in leadership, sales, and digital marketing. He is the CEO of TMS Ecosystem, which owns over 20 companies, and the founder of The Millionaire Student community. Sashin’s life story is inspirational, having grown up in South Africa with an average monthly income of $300. Govender became an eight figure multi millionaire by the age of 24 years old. Sashin’s success is attributed to his lifelong dedication to personal development, strategic thinking skills developed from a young age, and his belief in the 4 Pillars To Mastery: Health, Wealth, Spirituality, and Relationships. His message of positivity and success has inspired millions worldwide, and he has been knighted by the Royal Order of Constantine the Great and Saint Helen for his innovative and philanthropic contributions to society.

The US Times had the privilege of interviewing Sashin

What is your definition of an entrepreneur?

Sashin: An entrepreneur is an individual who sees a gap in the market and executes on the idea. Entrepreneurs are risk takers, they have 0 emotional attachment to failure or peoples opinions. Wayne Gretzky says, “100% of the shots never taken, never goes in.” Entrepreneurs also understand success is delayed gratification, what you saw today you will only reap in a few years. Most people expect to put success in the microwave, push 60 seconds and manifest it. Life isn’t that easy or else everyone would win.

We always hear you quoting, “work like you broke.” What does that mean?

Sashin: “Work like you broke“ means RESET daily, forget about how much you earned last month, what’s your net worth, keep reminding yourself you have not arrived ! Your ultimate goal is to outwork the world, don’t let a little bit of success stop you from achieving a lot. They say the worst thing about Success is not knowing whether you have a little or a lot. I am humble enough to work with everyone who has Desire, I don’t care about your past, all I’m focused on is where you see yourself in the future.

    What motivates you?

Sashin: Waking up every morning and going to www.Forbes.com and not seeing my name there. I get pissed off for greatness which makes me work harder !

What advice do you have for students?

Sashin: Don’t depend on one stream of income. The average Dollar Millionaire has 7 streams of income. Bill Gates has 4000+, Warren Buffet has 2400+, Richard Brandson has 400+. Education is great, but it’s not everything. Over the years I’ve realised knowledge is not power, application is. The A & B students have the knowledge, but they not taught to apply it. The C & D students don’t have much knowledge, but they great at taking action, they are risk takers. So they create the company and hire the A & B Students to work for them. My secret to success is that I started at a young age, I didn’t negotiate or contemplate. I took action !

How would you describe your life?

Sashin: I live my life by this quote, “the master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.“

    How important is self-development?

Sashin: 80% of life is Psychological. 20% is mechanics. Which means the marathon is always won mentally before physically. I live my life in the future, everything i do i have a clear concise picture of the end in mind. I was fortunate to get introduced to personal development at 8 Years Old. I spent hours studying and emulating individuals who have the lifestyle I desire. Your sub-conscious mind is a paradigm, a paradigm is a multitude of habits which means your foundation of your life. We have inherited our parents habits because we spent majority of our life with them. For example, if your parents don’t like onions, guess what you won’t like? Everything in life is mentally. It takes 21 days to create a hobbit, good or bad. it also takes 15 positive thoughts to counter attack one negative thought. The first thing I do each morning is recite my affirmations, I then close my eyes and visualise for 10 minutes. Personal development saved my life!

    Who is your mentor?

Sashin: Firstly a mentor is someone you have access to, most people claim their mentors are individuals on tv or social media etc. If you don’t have access to your mentor, you don’t have a mentor. My mentor has always been www.youtube.com I’ve spent hours studying the wealthiest individuals, matching and modelling their habits. YouTube has never called me once and said, “hey, have you watched a video today? “A mentor should never call you to do something you meant to do if you knew it could change your life !

    Do you mentor people?

Of course I do, unfortunately I don’t have the time nowadays with the balance between business, travelling and family. Although I have created a lot of free content on my YouTube channel and on my social media pages to indirectly mentor people.

  • KEN’S CORNER: What It Means To Be A Man… | The Liberty Beacon

KEN’S CORNER: What It Means To Be A Man…

Commentary by: TLB Contributing Writer: Ken LaRive

For a short time in my early days I thought I wanted to be a submariner. How romantic. How macho! I went to a school in Connecticut and was tested to see where I could fit in. There was a voice talking to me from the start, (you know that little voice I’m talking about), but I wouldn’t listen. I just wanted to be like Steve McQueen. When, for instance, I was told to say yes every time I heard a beep through the headphones, I noticed that there was a rhythm to the beeps as they got higher and higher. When I could no longer hear them I kept saying yes until I noticed the man behind the window becoming quite excited and impressed saying that I should be in Sonar. It was just a little lie, but seemed like something Steve would do…

Our training exercises on board were mostly horrible experiences. Again, I realized from the start that I didn’t much like men, especially in close quarters. I slept on a vinyl mattress under a torpedo, sweating on one side and freezing on the other. There was the constant stale smell of engine oil, fried food, testosterone, and sweat. I missed a hot bath, and I stunk. One of my jobs during sea exercises, from Key West to Canada, was being on the team of four “Tower” men. I had to wear red-tinted goggles constantly day and night, so that I would always have night vision. We locked ourselves into the top watertight compartment and plugged in our earphones to let us know when to open the hatch. We would then scurry out under the stars. Each had a side to scan with our field glasses, looking to the horizon for ships, or anything we may run into, as sonar is useless right above. We realized that the reason we were locked in was that if we ran under another ship we would still hold our watertight integrity. Too bad for us…

I soon began to realized that what was indicated to me by the “Uncle Sam” posters, and the fictitious notions of an enlistment officer, had about as much validity as my hearing test. Daaa! I listened to the voice and “non-volled’ after just four months, which means I indicated to the CO that I didn’t particularly like the service. That afternoon I was landing in New Orleans. Submarine Service is entirely voluntary, so they say. They don’t mention the brain washing of a nineteen-year-old boy to risk his life to prove something as nebulous as manhood…

I spent the next two years off the coast of Viet Nam on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. If I’m expected to load bombs to kill someone, shouldn’t I at least have a reason set in my mind? Shouldn’t there be some sort of process going on where I could justify 24-hour flight operations lighting up the horizon with napalm and incendiary? That voice was talking to me all that time, but I didn’t listen.

Everyone is looking for answers in this life, and for me I think the biggest one men grapple with is: “What does it mean to be a man?” I don’t see a clear answer for everyone. Man, I think, should mean male. It has no meaning other then our species, just as an ape is a monkey. Using the word, “Mankind”, however, depicts both male and female together, as a unit. When one adds a separate adjective to it, suddenly we add a value. A combination like a “good man” surely seems like a worthwhile aspiration. Or the word “responsible” could also become a great ambitious endeavor. A word like “rich” or “poor” doesn’t depict a value however, and to think that every man wants to be a good and responsible man is not always certain, or logical. There are men who revel in being bad men, and there are some men who aspire to be rich men, and will do any dastard deed to make it. Poor in spirit, but monetarily rich. But just like all rich men are not bad, so too are all poor men not good. Rich can mean a goodness, like “rich in spirit”, and thus, he is a “rich man”.

However, I don’t think that everything we do should always be measured because it has a value for the good of all. So long as you are not hurting anyone or stopping them from living the kind of life they want, it should be okay. I see nothing wrong with a bit of selfishness. What is wrong with placing yourself first at times?

I saw a man who tried to stop a fight in a Philippine bar back in 1970. He saw an innocent man being intimidated and threatened by several drunken service men and thought he could persuade them to take a peaceful road. They used him to clean the bar until the shore patrol came in and arrested the whole bunch, including the Good Samaritan. He stood on a principle, and that principle fell flat at his feet. Should he have tried? Yes! He stood for something. He made a decision on what he thought was right and went for it. He created a conscious conviction based on what he thought was just and honest, and risked being hurt to do it. He took action, and even though he got more then he bargained for, he did it out of righteousness. I wish I had understood that better then. I would have liked that man, and might have tried to help him. I think Steve would have too.

Even if there is nothing in the universe that balances good and evil. If there is no God who knows the difference between right and wrong. Even if there is nothing after death but a cold grave and darkness! Wouldn’t it be better to have lived a good and honest life? A righteous and joyful life?

Life is not always fair, or entirely for the common good, but that doesn’t mean that we all shouldn’t strive to be good. We have a tendency to sometimes take the easy road, not to stir the pot, and accept things we know in our hearts are wrong. We say that it’s okay because everyone is doing it. We are afraid to stand up for a conviction because we fear we’ll be ostracized, or ridiculed. It’s easy to sit on our hands, but not nearly as much fun!

Being a man has nothing to do with the muscle in your arms, how much you can drink, the size of your reproductive organs, or the amount of money you make. It is the goodness in your heart, the empathy for your fellow men, and the responsibility you take as your own. It is that gentle spirit that holds you on course, and the love you have to share.

This short life has meaning. It takes on the meaning we assign to it. It is a reflection of who we are. What we are is what we focus on, and I tell you that the self worth of being a man comes from doing what that little voice inside tells you to do. Listen to it. It’s the voice of God.

    Ken LaRive

From the Author, Ken La Rive – We in the Liberty movement have been fighting to take back this country for less than a decade, peacefully and with the love of God and country in our hearts. Our banner has been trampled on and displaced by a multitude of distractions, further eroding our nation and the cause for Liberty. And so, as we are pulled by forces we cannot fathom, powerful entities with unlimited resources stolen from our future, unaccountable trillions printed out of thin air and put on our backs as debt, we must formulate the most pitiful of all questions any patriot might ask in the final hour: Are we going to fight for our master’s tyranny, or are we going to demand the return of our civil liberties and Constitution? Are we going to choose The Banner of Liberty, or the shackles of voluntary servitude? Will it be a war for corporate profit, or a war to regain our ability to self govern, as the blood and toil of our forefathers presented to us, their children, as a gift? I fear that decision is emanate. I fear that any decision will be a hard one, but my greatest fear of all is that the decision has already been made for us.
