    The Met Gala took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday. It is one of the most exclusive fashion events. The theme for this year was “In America: a Lexicon of Fashion.” However, the evening was focused on honoring the late designer Karl Lagerfeld’s life and career. Opening the Costume Institute exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld – A Line of Beauty,” was a celebration of the occasion. The exhibit featured pieces from Lagerfeld’s time at Chanel, Fendi, Chloe, as well as his own label.

    The Met Gala’s guest list is renowned for being a star-studded affair, with fashion and entertainment stars from around the globe. The attendees of this year’s Met Gala were no different, as Oscar winners, supermodels and sports legends paid tribute to Lagerfeld. The evening’s color palette was black, white and cream. Many guests wore vintage items designed by the German designer. Nicole Kidman, an actress who modeled a blush Chanel dress for an advertisement nearly 20 years earlier, wore it. Dua Lipa wore a cream-colored wedding gown Lagerfeld designed in the 1990s for Chanel.

    The Met Gala is also known as a high-profile event, with co-chairs who are Anna Wintour and Dua Lipa, singers of Dua Lipa, and actresses Michaela Coel. Penelope Cruz was this year’s cochair, along with tennis star Roger Federer and singer Dua Lipa. Tickets for the ball are only available by invitation.     Former Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf sets the record straight on the real numbers of border crossings that have happened under the watch of Vice-President Kamala Harris as border czar after the Harris-Walz campaign, Biden administration, and the mainstream media continue to put out misleading numbers.

    Wolf says, “the Biden-Harris team is saying, ‘we’ve got record low border crossings,’ and what I describe is they’re using only one number, one statistic, and that is the number of migrants that border patrol is picking up it. But what they’re not telling you, is they’re also allowing folks to come through ports of entry, through that CBP-1 app, 47,000 in the month of June alone. I believe there’s also ‘got-aways’ that come across that border that they’re not including in that number.

    And then, of course, there’s the parole system, where they’re flying in 30,000 folks every-month, that are not included in that number. And so for the month of June, I indicate the Biden administration will tell you it’s 84,000 but if you add up all those categories, which all those categories are inadmissible aliens, these are aliens that don’t have a legal right to be here in this country. And if you add all those up, it’s over 200,000, in no world is 200,000 illegal aliens coming across that border, a record low. In any case, in fact, it’s a record high.

    And so look, this is part of the Biden-Harris [administration], they’re just lying to the American people, and they hope no one calls them out on it. Unfortunately, the legacy media is not doing it.“

  • Former NFL player sentenced for abusing and killing girlfriend’s daughter

    LAS VEGAS (TCN) — A former professional football player was sentenced this week for abusing and killing his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter in 2019.

    The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Cierre Wood entered an Alford plea, which means maintained his innocence but acknowledged there was enough evidence to convict him, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse, neglect, or endangerment. The Clark County judge sentenced Wood to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for the murder charge. He was also sentenced to 28 to 72 months behind bars for abuse and is required to cover the cost of the funeral. The two terms will run consecutively.

    Court records show Wood was initially indicted on 21 charges, including 19 counts of child abuse, for the death of La’Rayah Davis. Davis’ mother, Amy Taylor, pleaded guilty to the same charges and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years and a minimum of eight to 20 years for abuse.

    According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Davis died April 9, 2019. Wood reportedly noticed she was unresponsive, so he called 911 and performed CPR on her. She had “at least 100” bruises on different parts of her body, as well as 20 broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and other injuries.

    Clark County prosecutors reportedly argued Davis’ injuries “indicate a pattern of physical abuse of being hit, of being punched, of being forced to endure things that are just beyond words.”

    Wood reportedly forced the girl to exercise, including doing sit-ups and running laps, because he wanted to make sure she was “on the right path due to her being ‘chunky.’”

    Taylor reportedly told investigators that she came home from work one day and found her daughter “mutilated” after leaving her with Wood. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Taylor sat on and spanked her daughter as punishment.

    Wood played college football at Notre Dame as a running back and spent time with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans in his NFL career. The Associated Press reports he also played for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League.

  • Fact Check: Video showing Boston Red Sox fans’ ovation for Jarren Duran after suspension was altered

    How did Boston Red Sox fans react Aug. 14 when outfielder Jarren Duran returned to the lineup after a two-game suspension for using a homophobic slur?

    A video that’s gone viral on social media claims Duran, who has publicly apologized for using the slur that was caught on a hot mic, received a standing ovation from the Fenway Park faithful.

    “Jarren Duran returns to the lineup after a 2 game suspension to a MASSIVE ovation from Fenway Park,” said sticker text on an Aug. 14 TikTok video that had more than 8,300 likes.

    TikTok identified this video as part of its efforts to counter inauthentic, misleading or false content. (Read more about PolitiFact’s partnership with TikTok.)

    Duran could be heard on a live microphone yelling the slur at Boston’s Aug. 11 game to a heckling fan who told him he needed a tennis racket to hit, after he struck out in his first two at-bats. Duran overall is having a good season at the plate and was the MVP of July’s Major League Baseball All-Star game.

    Duran apologized to fans after the game and the team suspended him the next day, with his salary for those days being donated to the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

    We found the same video being shared by others on TikTok, X and YouTube. One X post with more than 3 million views was tagged with a community note, pointing out an obvious flaw in the video, which was altered. We found some others.

    The first strange thing about the video is that it opens with a fan in a Detroit Tigers cap supposedly cheering for Duran. The Tigers were playing the Seattle Mariners in Detroit the night of Duran’s return, while the Red Sox were hosting the Texas Rangers — not that a fan couldn’t wear his or her team’s gear to an unrelated game. 

    As the X community note points out, the video opened with a clip of Tigers and Red Sox fans giving a standing ovation to Tigers star Miguel Cabrera, who was playing his final game at Fenway Park on Aug. 13, 2023.

    Another flaw in the video is the broadcaster saying amid camera shots of fans standing and cheering, “I’d say maybe half the fans right now are giving Adam a standing ovation.”

    Who is Adam, you ask? Well, it’s not Duran, whose first name, as we’ve established, is Jarren. We searched “Adam standing ovation Fenway” on Google and found that Adam is former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones.

    Jones said he was the subject of racial taunts during a game at Fenway Park. The next day, May 2, 2017, Jones received a standing ovation from Boston fans when he came to bat for the first time.

    You can see several of the same fans in the TikTok video in the 2017 video below, including a woman in a red shirt and blue jacket, and a man in a Red Sox jersey standing next to a little boy in a Boston cap.

    We watched the Red Sox-Rangers game on MLB.com to see how fans reacted to Duran’s return. Some applause could be heard, but there was no prolonged ovation shown or acknowledged by the broadcast. 

    Boston Herald Red Sox beat reporter Mac Cerullo posted on X that Duran received a “louder than usual cheer” when introduced in pregame warmups and another hand when he came to the plate for the first time.

    The Boston Globe Red Sox reporter Pete Abraham wrote of Duran’s return that the outfielder “did not receive an ovation,” but “just the usual cheering you’d expect for a star player.”

    We also noticed another flaw in the TikTok video, which shows Duran wearing a long red sleeve under his jersey on his right arm. Duran, in his return, was wearing a white sleeve on his right arm, which you can see in the photo atop this story. 

    A video that claimed to show Duran getting a “massive” ovation upon his return from a suspension spliced together videos of crowds from two past events. The claim is Pants on Fire!

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Super Mario Bros. Movie is the first movie of the year that has broken the billion dollar mark worldwide. The video game-based movie has grossed an estimated $40m for the Friday-through-Sunday period in the US and Canada, taking its domestic total to $490m. The movie’s earnings overseas have reached $532m and its total global revenue has now reached $1.02b. This is the 10th animated film to ever break the $1 billion mark. This movie is a collaboration between Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination Studios.

    The horror film Evil Dead Rise came in second for the second weekend running, with a total of $12.2m. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, a comedy/drama from Gracie Films & Lionsgate Films, came in third place with a $6.8m debut. John Wick: Chapter 4 starring Keanu Reeves was fourth with $5m. Disney’s rerelease of Return of the Jedi took $4.8m in fifth place. In late May, the film will celebrate its 40th birthday.

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been a huge success ever since it was released in November 2022. The domestic total of the movie has reached $490m. Overseas earnings are $532m. This is a milestone that surpasses the global billion-dollar mark. This is the first 2023 film to achieve this milestone and the 10th animated film to ever do so. This movie is a collaboration between Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination Studios. Evil Dead Rise, are you there God?     Comedian and actor Rob Schneider blasted Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for their “newest lie” about independent candidate for president Robert Kennedy Jr.

    “DON’T BELIEVE THE DEMOCRAT’S NEWEST LIE! My friend Robert Kennedy Jr. will not join forces with the truly malignant tumor on our Nation, Kamala Harris and Lockdown-Riot Allowing-Walz,” the comedian wrote in an X post on Thursday.

    On Wednesday, the mainstream media jumped to a story that Kennedy sought a meeting with the Harris campaign to endorse her for president and shutter his campaign if she offers him a position in her cabinet.

    The story, first reported by the failing Washington Post, said that the intel came for a “people familiar with the conversations.”

    However, since the story went live, Kennedy has come out forcefully denying that he would ever endorse Harris. Indeed, Kennedy seemed to denounce the entire Democrat Party, not just Harris.

    “VP Harris’s Democratic Party would be unrecognizable to my father and uncle and I cannot reconcile it with my values,” Kennedy wrote in a Thursday morning post on X.

  • Fact Check: This image of Elon Musk dining with a ‘robot girlfriend’ isn’t real, it’s AI-generated

    A Facebook post claims to have photographic proof that Elon Musk, X’s owner and Tesla’s CEO, dined with a “robot girlfriend,” but that image was generated with artificial intelligence.

    The image shows Musk seated at a restaurant table next to a blond-haired woman with a gray robotic body. 

    “Elon Musk has announced his first robot girlfriend, with artificial intelligence. Musk said he took her out to dinner and enjoyed talking to her, calling her smart, beautiful and obedient … Wow this is so crazy!!,” an Aug. 10 Facebook post said.

    Other posts on Instagram, Facebook, also shared the image with similar claims. Posts in Spanish also share the photo, falsely claiming it showed Musk’s robot girlfriend.

    The posts were flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

    We found no credible reports or statements from Tesla or Musk that he created a robot girlfriend.

    When doing a reverse-image search, PolitiFact found that  the X account @iamnot_elon posted the video July 23. The image is captioned: “Will this be normal soon?”

    The X profile notes that the account does not belong to Musk and that it is a parody account. The account has posted other images created with artificial intelligence, including images of Musk and presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

    PolitiFact asked Siwei Lyu, a University at Buffalo professor who specializes in digital media forensics, whether the image on Facebook was AI-generated.

    “This image is highly likely to be generated by AI models,” Lyu said. “There are plenty of artifacts, such as Musk’s hands … but also the details of the utensils.” Musk appears to have an extra finger and the utensils on the table look distorted.

    There are programs that identify whether images were generated with artificial intelligence. Although these programs are not infallible, one of them, Hive Moderation, showed that Musk’s image has a 99.9% probability of being AI-generated.

    Musk posted July 22 on X that “Tesla will have genuinely useful humanoid robots in low production for Tesla internal use next year and, hopefully, high production for other companies in 2026.”

    These robots called Tesla Bot or Optimus are capable of performing “unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks” in the workforce, according to Tesla’s website.

    On Jan. 15, Musk posted a video on X of one of the humanoids folding a shirt. Musk said that “Optimus” cannot do this autonomously yet, but will in the future.

    During a Tesla shareholders’ meeting May 16, Musk presented a video showing that the robots can walk and pick up items. The robots were first unveiled in 2022.

    Tech 4 Peace, an Iraqi fact-checking outlet and signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network, also reported that the image of Musk with the supposed girlfriend robot was created with artificial intelligence. The fact-checkers also ran the image through an AI detection program and said that the parody account posted other images made with AI.

    In 2023, PolitiFact rated False similar images of Musk kissing a robot.

    The image of Musk seated in a restaurant with a humanoid robot is not real. We rate claims that he “announced his first robot girlfriend, with artificial intelligence” False.

    The 18th Annual Mizell Memorial Hospital Foundation Gala was held on August 8 in the Fellowship Center of the Opp First Baptist.

    Bill Johnson, nationally renowned Bob Hope tribute artist entertained attendees of the gala. Dr. Lori Stanfield, Interim CEO of Mizell Memorial Hospital, gave a report on the Economic Impact of the hospital providing care for the community each year.

    The Opp High School Ambassadors and SGA served the meal. Mizell Memorial Hospital Foundation is a charitable foundation for the betterment of our community.
