  • Teen Saves the Day After Bus Driver Faints – The US Times

Dillon Reeves saved the day when he brought a bus to a safe halt after the driver fell unconscious. The driver of the bus, which was carrying nearly 70 students from Lois E. Carter middle school in Warren, passed out. Reeves was quick to act and stopped the vehicle in the middle of the road by using the handbrake. Video footage shows students screaming while Reeves controls the bus and shouts for someone to dial 911.

Authorities have praised Reeves for his bravery, as he avoided what could have become a tragic accident. Jonathan Lafferty, a Warren city councilor, praised the boy’s courage on Facebook and said that the city is “very proud” of him. Reeves was a 7th grade student on the bus at the time of the incident. Superintendent Robert Livernois stated that the district was “grateful that Dillon had the ability to react quickly and control the situation.”

This incident shows the importance of being prepared and thinking quickly in an emergency situation. Reeves used his quick thinking to stop the bus and prevent a catastrophic accident. The young boy’s bravery and courage has won him praise from all quarters.

Trump just defined what separates him and Kamala Harris

From the kitchen table to the world stage, from food props to folksy tales, former president gave his team the performance they’ve been craving at a New Jersey press conference.

    By John Solomon

Donald Trump did in 90 minutes Thursday what Republicans have craved in the weeks since the Democrats pulled their historic switcheroo and put Kamala Harris atop their ticket: Trump defined succinctly what separates him from his fall election opponent.

With food props that adorn every American’s kitchen table, the former president used a press conference to drive home what the real cost of the Biden-Harris economic agenda is to ordinary Americans, and why elitists can’t grasp inflation’s true impact. “Grocery prices have skyrocketed,” he declared, rattling off official government statistics that show cereals are up 26%, bread up 24%, butter up 37%, baby formula up 30% and eggs up 46%.

“How can a family afford that?” Trump asked the crowd of reporters gathered at his Bedminster, N.J., retreat. They didn’t seem to have any answers.

Staying at the kitchen table, he even offered a rare insight into his own personal humanity, jokingly admitting he preferred Cheerios for breakfast though he hadn’t had them in a long time.

At other times, Trump interjected folksy but authentic tales about his interactions with global leaders during his first term, pointedly yet entertainingly reminding Americans that at a time of grave insecurity at home and abroad he possesses an experience and resume that Harris does not.

The stories with names like Putin, Netanyahu and Xi moved to top of the minds a question bouncing in the recesses of many voters’ minds after 24 straight days of Harris ducking unscripted interviews and news conferences. Trump asked rhetorically, “If the vice president isn’t willing to even answer reporters, how can she answer the taunts and threats of global tyrants like Vladimir Putin or the Iranian mullahs? People don’t respect her in the world. People don’t respect her in the economy,” Trump offered in answer to that question.

He also made Harris own the incumbency of a vice presidency that left the vast majority of Americans believing their country is headed in the wrong direction.

“Harris has just declared that tackling inflation will be a ‘Day One priority’ for her,” Trump noted. “But Day One for Kamala was three and a half years ago.” Although she has tried to distance herself from the devastating failure of “Bidenomics,” conservative critics have been quick to point out that Harris not only bragged about Bidenomics “working” but positioned herself publicly to take credit for those policies.

Popular conservative blog HotAir posted that “A mere year ago, her rhetoric was chock full of ‘when President Biden and I took office, we decided…’ The ‘we’s’ and the ‘I’s’ abound through this brag session,” to which the blog linked a damning video clip of Harris’ taking credit for Bidenomics.

To the millions of legal immigrants who fled communism and socialism from Eastern Europe to Latin America, Trump also turned some of Kamala Harris’ most recent proposals into liabilities, including her plan released just hours earlier Thursday to impose prices caps on Medicare drugs and services.

“The Radical Left person wants to put price controls all over the place, which will end up driving up your prices, not down,” he said.

“She’s running on the Maduro plan. We call it the plan, like something straight out of Venezuela or the Soviet Union,” he quipped, citing the Venezuelan dictator who is now accused of election cheating.

“She wants to change a free enterprise type country into a communist type country,” he concluded. Man on the street interview over months have shown that’s an argument that resonates with many legal immigrants who fled the repression of their homelands.

Thursday’s news conference had the makings of a change moment in the rollercoaster Election of 2024.

Some Republicans and many media elites for days have wondered whether the 45th president had lost his footing in a race that he appeared to be leading until Harris and Democratic Party insiders bumped Joe Biden from the ticket. Trump’s speeches were knocked as meandering. His questions about Harris playing the race card were deemed insensitive. His demeanor was dark and grumpy, the critics argued.

But on a sunny, breezy afternoon in New Jersey, Trump erased that chatter and changed the narrative. He focused on the three “I”’s that are Harris’ biggest liability: inflation, insecurity and the insanity her and Tim Walz’s far-left policies have unleashed on Americans, and the inexperience her resume and personal demeanor convey. He had prescriptions for each and sweetened them with the self-assured optimism that voters can fix what worries them most with a simple decision in November,

“My message to them would be very simple: vote for Trump and we’re going to fix the problem. We’re going to get it fixed,” he promised.

Even before Thursday’s event, Trump’s polling numbers seemed to rebound. A Fox poll put him up nationally by 1 point, and several battleground state polls from Trafalgar had him back in the lead after a brief recess.

But the 90 minutes at Bedminster on Thursday provided a political theater moment the team in red wanted.

“I was just really impressed with what President Trump had to say,” Arizona GOP Senate nominee and Trump ally Kari Lake told Just the News afterwards. “And you saw the groceries out there. There’s not a single American right now who’s not struggling to make ends meet and just simply buy food right now.”

As Trump’s event was winding down, the former president fielded an unexpected query from the reporting crew that reminded voters of one other moment in history that separates him, not only from Harris, but most other politicians too: he survived an assassin’s bullet by mere millimeters.

“It’s a miracle, and God had something to do with it,” Trump answered on why he thought his life was spared. “And maybe it’s we want to save the world.”

  • Fact Check: Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey has never called for banning fracking

Republican Dave McCormick has painted his opponent, incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, as an enemy to fracking and fossil fuels — an especially pertinent claim in the Keystone State, where natural gas is a dominant industry and fracking is a perennial campaign issue.

In a recent X post, McCormick went a step further, saying Casey wants to ban the practice outright.

“While Bob Casey and Kamala Harris want to BAN fracking, I’ll fight to UNLEASH Pennsylvania’s natural resources and make America energy dominant,” McCormick said in the post, which was accompanied by a 20-second clip of a local TV interview.

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, extracts oil and natural gas from shale deep underground. Water, sand and other chemicals are injected at high pressure into wells to crack open rock layers and release natural gas. The gas is then extracted and used for energy.

It’s big business in Pennsylvania, which produces more than 7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year.

Republicans attacked Harris for supporting a fracking ban when she ran for president in 2020, a policy her campaign now says she opposes. McCormick has tried to tie Casey to Harris’ past positions and argue he would hurt the fracking industry in Pennsylvania.

But Casey, who is seeking a fourth Senate term, has never called to ban fracking. His public statements and voting record show consistent support for allowing fracking to continue with environmental regulations. Casey’s campaign website lists him as understanding “the economic benefits and energy independence that Pennsylvania’s energy industry provides, which is why he has opposed bans on fracking.”

Earlier in August, Casey underscored his position in a statement to Erie News Now, writing, “If any administration proposes a fracking ban, not only will I vote against it but I will lead the effort to make sure a ban won’t get started, let alone enacted into law.”

We asked the McCormick campaign for evidence to support the claim that Casey wants to ban fracking, but  received no response.

What is Casey’s history on fracking?

Christopher Borick, a political science professor and the director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, which regularly polls Pennsylvania residents, said Casey hasn’t historically supported a fracking ban.

“I have never heard those words uttered from Casey, I’ve never seen a policy position calling for a ban,” Borick said.

Many environmental activists oppose fracking, arguing it can pollute water and air supplies and trigger earthquakes. Natural gas also contributes to climate change by releasing planet-warming greenhouse gasses into the air, though at a lower rate than crude oil and coal.

Casey has introduced the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals (FRAC) Act multiple times in the Senate, but it has not advanced out of a committee. The bill would give the Environmental Protection Agency more regulatory authority over fracking and would require fracking operations to disclose the chemicals they inject underground..

The Casey campaign pointed us to his statements and votes opposing fracking bans.

In 2021, Casey was one of seven Democrats who joined Republicans to vote for an amendment that would prohibit the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency from creating rules to ban fracking.

In 2020, after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., introduced legislation to ban fracking, a Casey spokesperson told the Beaver County Times Casey “does not favor” banning the practice.

After President Joe Biden’s administration announced a temporary pause on exports of liquified natural gas this year, Casey and fellow Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania criticized the decision.

McCormick’s post also claims Harris wants to ban fracking. Harris said she supported a ban on fracking when she ran for president in 2020. In a 2019 CNN town hall, she said, “There’s no question I’m in favor of banning fracking.”

When Harris became Biden’s running mate for the general election, she aligned with his policies, which did not involve a fracking ban. When asked about her position now, Harris campaign spokesperson James Singer referred us to articles in Politico and The Hill, in which Harris’ campaign said she does not support banning fracking.

    Our ruling

McCormick said Casey and Harris “want to ban fracking.”

There is no evidence that Casey has ever called to ban fracking. He has supported legislation to protect fracking and proposed legislation to impose environmental regulations on the practice. He told a local news station he would oppose any efforts to ban fracking by the presidential administration.

Harris did support a fracking ban when she ran for president in 2020. Now, her campaign says she does not support banning fracking.

McCormick mischaracterized Casey’s fracking support by linking his position to Harris’ previous disapproval. We rate this claim False.

  • US Regulators Admit Mistakes Ahead of Bank Failures – The US Times

The US Federal Reserve called for more banking oversight after its own failures to oversee Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), leading to the bank’s collapse last month. Michael Barr, the Federal Reserve vice-chair for supervision, published a report in which he admitted that SVB management had failed to manage risks and Fed supervisors “failed” to act forcefully after identifying problems. He said that the Fed will strengthen its banking supervision so that it can identify vulnerabilities and risks like those at SVB. The review will also examine strengthening the regulatory framework of banks, including tightening rules on interest-rate risks, liquidity and capital requirements as well as stress testing.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation also published a report on the failure of Signature Bank in November. The report concluded that the FDIC should have escalated supervision actions earlier and that examination products could have arrived sooner. The FDIC cited resource constraints with its examination staff as a factor that affected the quality and timeliness of its SBNY examinations. The FDIC report follows the Fed report on SVB, which called for increased banking oversight.

Patrick McHenry, a Republican legislator, criticized the Fed’s call for more regulation. He called it a “justification” of Democrats’ longstanding priorities. Jerome Powell, Fed chairman, welcomed the report’s “self-critical look” at SVB and backed Barr’s recommendations for addressing the rules and supervision practices.

  • The Global Attack On Small Business | The Liberty Beacon

There was a highly conventional travel piece in The New York Times of the sort that such venues have been running for many years now, even decades.

It’s about a small resort town in Italy, namely Bologna, that is being wrecked by tourism and corporations moving in to promote it and take advantage of it, thereby changing the character of the place fundamentally.

You know the type of article. I’ve ignored them for years, dismissing such travelogs as nothing more than the kvetching of the elite rich toward the common man and his desire to see the world. There is nothing more conventional than journalists yammering about the evils of “commercialism.”

However, for whatever reason, I read this one in full. Buried in the article was the following:

“The slow eating of our city by mortadella [meat] shops started before COVID but accelerated when, as in many cities, lots of Bologna’s independent shops, cafes and restaurants went out of business during the pandemic. Many of those in the center of town were bought up by chains with deep pockets and a singular vision: to sell mortadella to foreigners.”

The article did not admit this, but any marketing person can immediately see the connection between mortadella and bologna; you guessed it, the American luncheon meat. That’s right, international corporations seized on the town’s name to invent a fake tradition to sell to tourists. That’s cynical, even dark, but entirely expected.

    The article continues.

“Downtown has changed completely. In the streets around the historic main square there used to be many old stationery shops—a favorite sold fountain pens, inks in every color and all the hand-bound notebooks one could dream of. It had been there for as long as I can remember, but was recently turned into an ‘Ancient cold cuts butcher.’ It’s part of a chain. Just across from it, in what I think used to be a jewelry store, is a second self-styled ancient butcher from the same chain. When I asked the shop assistant how ancient they were, she replied that they had been open for three months.”

Did you catch that passing mention of “went out of business during the pandemic?” Yes, and, if you have been paying attention these past four years, you know precisely what that means. It’s not about a severe flu. It’s about the response to the flu, namely the brutal lockdowns that destroyed small businesses even as big businesses all over the world were allowed to function normally, provided the customers were masked up and vaccinated.

So any reader knows the score, even if the journalist buried the point.

These small businesses were wrecked by the government. This happened not only in Bologna but worldwide. We have no firm numbers to put on this because they do not exist. But I’m sure you have your own stories of your town.

The local shops were destroyed. Stimulus could not save them. They finally gave up, crushing dreams all around. It’s not just in the United States, not just in your hometown, but all over the world.

They were replaced by heavily capitalized multinationals that were in a position to weather the storm. This all happened in the course of a mere two years. We all felt it and saw it.

I recall getting a message from a friend who achieved his dream of making and marketing a charcoal toothpaste, working 18-hour days to develop supply chains. He had 150 employees, and life was good, with robust supply chains and a bright future. Then the lockdowns hit. Eighteen months later, he had to notify everyone that the company would go bankrupt and that everyone would lose their jobs. The end.

He cried deeply and has never recovered from the devastation. I’ve cried for him too, but millions are in his position. The lockdowns transformed life for billions of people globally, shattering dreams, wrecking businesses with long traditions, destroying intellectual and physical capital, and transforming small towns with organic structures of enterprise into hubs for multinational sellers of junk.

This story is shocking and overwhelming but largely unreported. The policy response to the pandemic might as well have been concocted by big business and big banks to crush their competition forever, for that is exactly what happened. It’s a stretch to say that this was the intention, but I fully understand those who say that this was the plot all along. That’s a normal and natural response, to believe that this was all by intention.

In the weeks following the pandemic policy response and the lockdowns, the World Economic Forum released a book called “The Great Reset.” It was about how the COVID crisis would and should be deployed to usher out one form of enterprise and invite a new form in. We should release our attachments to the physical world and property and instead embrace the digital world, green energy (wind and solar power), and the subscription model of profitability.

Whether this blueprint was an inspiration or merely an opportunistic reflection of what was happening is not known, but there was no question that something huge was taking place, the replacement of one form of commerce with another. We see it today all around us, from our hometowns to global trade flows. The old world is being swept away not by choice but by force.

The situation in Bologna is typical of what has happened worldwide.

Will it work? Not over the long term. There is a certain kind of coercive utopian unleashed on the land who believes that the old limits are no more. Not even mortality should trouble us. We can abolish scarcity with the right form of central plan. Nations of the world have been cajoled into trying this out. The new system is not socialism, and it is not communism. It is a form of corporatism that favors new elites against incumbent elites. The rest of us are merely spectators.

There is every reason to think that the “great reset,” however, is not long for this world. The seeds of failure are becoming more evident, as indebted governments deal with raging inflation, growing bankruptcy, fiscal limitations, and heightened voter discontent. Europe has already slid into recession and the United States is headed toward admitting that we never really recovered from lockdowns. Most tellingly, China itself—the world center of great-reset economic strategy—has bumped up against the limits and is facing waves of bankruptcy, inflation, and debt.

The big picture is that the hubris of mankind has once again got the best of him, but the experiment has produced tremendous pain along the way. Finding our way out will be just as painful. Meanwhile, there is every reason to weep for the small businesses, for it is they who have paid the highest price along the way. Their stories will never be fully told, for there are too many, and telling them is too painful. But let’s not forget them.

The various proposals extant to stop taxing tips are welcome but tiny compared with what we really need. The deregulation, budget cuts, and end to the litigation thicket need to be dramatic and far-reaching in order to save small enterprises.

Whether it is Bologna or your hometown, it is the small merchants who have built the best of the modern world. They deserved far better.

  • Fact Check: Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick has not called to outlaw abortion

Abortion has emerged as a major issue in Pennsylvania’s race for a U.S. Senate seat, with several ads targeting Republican Dave McCormick’s past statements about abortion restrictions.

In a recent TV ad, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said McCormick “wants to outlaw abortions.” It also says McCormick said he opposes exceptions for abortion restrictions in cases of rape and incest, a claim previous ads also have focused on.

The committee’s new spot is part of a $79 million national ad blitz that’s running in several states with key U.S. Senate races. It began airing in Pennsylvania on Aug. 7.

McCormick, a business executive, is hoping to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey. McCormick ran for Senate in 2022 and lost the primary to TV personality and heart surgeon Mehmet Oz.

McCormick’s abortion position has changed through his two Senate campaigns, which came during an upheaval in abortion politics. Although McCormick has previously made statements that could be considered pro abortion restrictions — such as that he “believes life begins at conception” — he has said during the 2024 campaign cycle that he opposes a national abortion ban. In an April interview with a local TV station he said abortion laws should be left to the states.

“I would not support a ban on abortion,” he said. “Listen, this is an area where we have to find common ground.”

McCormick also said in the interview that he supports some restrictions on what he called “late-term abortions.” He said in an ad he supports Pennsylvania’s law that limits abortion after 24 weeks unless the pregnant woman’s life is at risk.

McCormick spokesperson Nate Sizemore told PolitiFact in an email, “Dave has said repeatedly he does not support a national abortion ban” and “his position is clearly articulated on our website.”

McCormick’s campaign website says he “is opposed to a national abortion ban, and supports exceptions in the cases of rape, incest, and saving the life of the mother.”

When contacted for comment, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee pointed to several of McCormick’s past statements, including from his 2022 Senate campaign website, to back up the claims made in the ad. One statement the group cited was from 2022, when McCormick said on Fox News that overturning Roe “would be a huge step forward and a huge victory for the protection of life.”

McCormick’s 2022 campaign website said he was “staunchly pro-life and believes life begins at conception.” It also said he will “continue to advocate for the rights of the unborn.” It did not clearly state a position on an abortion ban.

McCormick’s past abortion comments were broad

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee pointed us to a video clip  liberal commentator Brian Tyler Cohen posted April 3 on X from McCormick’s 2022 campaign. In the clip, McCormick says, “We have to change the law on life, but more than ever we have to change the culture.”

During an April 2022 primary election debate, McCormick said he believes in “very rare instances” there should be abortion exceptions for the pregnant woman’s life. He did not mention support for exceptions in cases of rape and incest.

His campaign provided an audio clip from a February 2022 event in Bethel Park, before the debate, in which he said he supported those exceptions. In the audio clip, McCormick responded to an audience member’s question and said, “I do accept three exceptions, the ones you just said. Rape, incest and the life of the mother.”

Republicans’ shifting message after SCOTUS decision

McCormick’s changing rhetoric over time is in keeping with Republicans’ broader messaging shift after the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, said Mary Ziegler, a University of California, Davis law professor who studies the history and politics of abortion.

Since Roe v. Wade ended, abortion restrictions increasingly became less popular among voters and anti-abortion groups have focused on abortion policy changes that do not require congressional action, Ziegler said.

“Republicans have every incentive to distance themselves from the more sweeping bans,” she said. “One, because they’re unpopular, but two, because the base doesn’t even really prioritize them in the same way they might once have.”

In January 2023, 41 congressional Republicans signed a letter urging President Joe Biden’s administration to change its guidance on the Comstock Act, an 1873 law banning mailing certain obscene material and abortion-related items.

Although the Biden administration has issued guidance saying the Comstock Act does not prohibit mailing drugs and surgical equipment used to induce abortions, a future administration could interpret the law more strictly, amounting to a ban on some abortions, Ziegler said.

Casey’s position on abortion has also shifted over the years. He once described himself as a “pro-life Democrat” and supported abortion restrictions. Since the Dobbs decision, Casey has called for abortion protections and voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which sought to codify the abortion protections in effect under Roe v. Wade.

    Our ruling

A Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ad said McCormick “wants to outlaw abortions.”

The statement has an element of truth, because McCormick does support restrictions on abortions after 24 weeks, and he used stronger language opposing abortion in a previous Senate campaign, including wanting to “change the law” on abortion.

But he has said during the 2024 campaign and his campaign website says that he does not support a national abortion ban.

We rate this claim Mostly False.

  • Process begins to remove noncitizens as registered voters

Process begins to remove noncitizens as registered voters

    Published 9:15 am Friday, August 16, 2024

Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has initiated efforts to remove any noncitizens as being registered voters within the state.

Allen said prior work efforts identified 3,251 individuals who are registered to vote in Alabama who have been issued noncitizen identification numbers by the Department of Homeland Security. The secretary announced that he is instructing the Boards of Registrars in all 67 counties to immediately inactivate and initiate steps necessary to remove all individuals who are not United States Citizens.

“I have been clear that I will not tolerate the participation of noncitizens in our elections,” Allen said. “I have even gone so far as to testify before a United States Senate Committee regarding the importance of this issue. We have examined the current voter file in an attempt to identify anyone who appears on that list that has been issued a noncitizen identification number.”

Repeated requests to the United States Federal Government to assist Allen’s efforts by providing a list of noncitizens currently residing in Alabama have been declined. This lack of cooperation led Allen to approach the issue in a different way.

Allen says it is possible that some of the individuals who were issued noncitizen identification numbers have, since receiving them, become naturalized citizens and are, therefore, eligible to vote. The process initiated by the Secretary of State’s Office will allow those naturalized citizens to update their information on a State of Alabama Voter Registration Form and, once verified, vote in the state’s elections.

Allen has also provided the list of registered voters identified as having been issued a noncitizen identification number to the Office of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall for further investigation and possible criminal prosecution.

“This is not a one-time review of our voter file. We will continue to conduct such reviews to do everything possible to make sure that everyone on our file is an eligible voter,” Allen said. “I am hopeful that in the near future the federal government will change course and be helpful to states as we work to protect our elections.”

Wes Allen is Alabama’s 54th Secretary of State. The Secretary of State is Alabama’s Chief Elections Official. Additionally, Alabama law gives the Secretary of State more than 1,000 different duties. To learn more about the Secretary of State and his responsibilities and duties visit www.sos.alabama.gov.
