Three LBW Community College students recently represented the Alabama District and Pilot International organization as the only Compass members worldwide in attendance at the annual convention in Denver, Colorado.

The three members present the Compass International Flag during the opening ceremony of the convention.

LBW Compass Club President Kassidy Lee of Andalusia, Rhian Grayson of Greenville, and Kayley Peebles of Red Level attended the 102nd Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center.

“These young ladies represented our college, state and country exceptionally well at the conference,” said Club Advisor Maggie Mash, who also serves as the marketing director at LBW. “Our trip was filled with sight-seeing, volunteerism, education and overall skill development to help us Do More, Care More, and Be More for our community — the tagline of Pilot.”

Compass International is the young professional division of Pilot International. Compass is a community-based organization for high school graduates or young adults up to the age of 26 in the United States (Up to 28 for Japanese young adults). It is an opportunity to participate in community service, leadership skills, and advance personal and professional goals.

Sponsored by the Pilot Club of Andalusia, Kassidy, Rhian and Kayley along with Mash, participated in “Compass Con,” the portion of the conference specifically for Compass members.

The students were selected to present the Compass International flag during the opening convention ceremony.

One day was filled with exploring Denver with the Anchor members, where they had a tour of the Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs and explored Manitou Springs, a town known for its natural mineral springs.

Throughout the convention they had tailored sessions related to mental health, leadership, projects and fundraisers. Most notably, they were invited to serve on the Compass Panel during the convention in which they spoke about how Compass has impacted their lives and offered suggestions for recruitment, outreach and partnerships.

The attendees thanked the Pilot Club of Andalusia for graciously supporting them throughout the year and especially for this once-in-a lifetime experience in Denver.

President of LBW Community College, Dr. Brock Kelley, expressed his support of Compass Club by saying, “Having civic organizations, like Pilot and Compass Club, involved with LBW allows our students more opportunities that directly benefits our community.”

Oversight Committee Launching Investigation into Tim Walz over China Connections

The investigation is “following reports detailing the Governor’s longstanding connections to Chinese Communist Party entities & officials” ~James Comer

    BREITBART

The House Oversight Committee is launching an investigation into Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) over his numerous connections to China, which include a student exchange program funded by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the Chinese secret police station operating in the Twin Cities, and much more.

Chairman James Comer (R-KY) launched the investigation “following reports detailing the Governor’s longstanding connections to Chinese Communist Party entities and officials,” according to the House Oversight Committee.

“Mr. Walz has visited China 30 times, served as a fellow at a Chinese institution that maintains a devotion to the CCP, and spoke alongside the President of a Chinese organization the State Department exposed as a CCP effort to influence and co-opt local leaders,” the House Oversight Committee said in a statement, revealing that “FBI briefers recently informed the Committee that the Bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force investigates CCP activity that is similar to China’s engagement with Governor Walz.”

“In a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Chairman Comer is now requesting information, documents, and communications related to the CCP-connected entities and officials Governor Walz has engaged and partnered with,” the committee added:

Americans deserve to fully understand how deep Governor Walz’s relationship with China goes,” Comer said in a statement.

“Governor Walz: Visited China at least 30 times. Served as a fellow at a Chinese institution that maintains a devotion to the CCP. Spoke alongside the President of a Chinese organization the State Department exposed as a CCP effort to influence local leaders,” he said, providing a few examples:

Indeed, Walz has a longstanding history of adoration for China, starting with student exchange program funded by the CCP.

“The concerns are, look, you know, you can like China. You can like the Chinese people. The question is, when you set up an exchange program, as he did, to bring students to China, you’re not dealing with the Chinese people — you’re dealing with the Chinese Communist Party,” New York Times bestselling author and Breitbart News senior contributor Peter Schweizer said during a recent appearance on Breitbart News Daily, detailing Walz’s numerous connections with China and Chinese entities.

“And in the case of his program, it’s funded by the CCP. It was organized with the help of the CCP,” he said, noting that Walz reportedly told students to “downplay” their Americanness.

“And when you start to look at some of the, you know, activities involving the students, it gets slightly odd. I mean, you know, some of the local press accounts from the Midwest report that students were told by Walz, ‘When you go to China, downplay your Americanness,’ which is, is kind of odd, because if you’re having a cultural exchange, the purpose is to actually learn about the other culture,” Schweizer noted, explaining that, in contrast, it would never be asked of Chinese students to downplay their Chineseness.

But Walz’s connections go far beyond that, as he also has what Schweizer described as an “odd relationship with the Chinese state,” choosing to give a speech in 2019 to an organization which served as a front group for the CCP….

  • Covington County eyes grant funding for cyber security

Covington County eyes grant funding for cyber security

    Published 11:00 am Saturday, August 17, 2024

The Covington County Commission approved a consent agreement with the State of Alabama to participate in a cyber security grant program at a regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, August 13.

Chairman Greg White said funds are available through a grant program that will be flowing out in the coming months.

“We (the commission) are being asked to sign the consent agreement, which would get us on the list to be eligible for funding. As the particular programs come out requiring a 20 percent match from locals, we would be able to review the funding on a case-by-case basis. Right now, it is just an administrative action to agree to the local consent agreement with the state,” White said.

    In other business:

    • The commission announced that the proposed per diem policy for county employees is still under review. Further discussions will be made at the next meeting.
    • The commission announced three upcoming board appointments for the Florala Airport Authority with the current terms set to expire in September. The commission did not take any action and will have this item on the agenda at a future meeting.
    • The commission approved a bid for inmate communications (phones) at the Covington County Jail from Combined Public Communications.
    • The commission approved an annual contract with the Alabama Department of Youth Services for one bed dedicated for Covington County residents at the youth diversion center in Dothan. This agreement allows the county to send a troubled child at no cost, but additional beds are the financial responsibility of the commission.
    • The commission approved a recommendation for retail beer license (off premises only) for the Family Dollar/Dollar Tree store on Highway 29 near the intersection with Straughn School Road. The commission’s approval will be communicated to the state ABC board.
    • The commission approved the donation of an Art Forrester painting to the City of Florala for display in a museum in Florala.
    • The commission continued discussion of a K9 with the Sheriff’s Department. No action was taken at the meeting, other than to note on the record that one K9 was de-commissioned.
    • The commission approved retroactive approval for out-of-state travel for Sheriff Blake Turman to tour a jail in Flint, Michigan, and two officers to attend training in Texas. The National Sheriff’s Association paid for air travel and lodging; Turman’s request was made to compensate for meals.
    • The commission approved declaring three vehicles in the Sheriff’s Department as surplus. These vehicles are a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, 1999 Ford Econoline, and a van that will be transferred to the county’s road department.
    • The commission approved the solicitation of bids for heavy equipment parts and annual bids for liquid asphalt, seed, and fertilizer in the County Engineer’s Department.
    • The commission approved Dist. 2 commissioner Michael Smith’s $2,500 discretionary funds to be used towards road striping.
    • The commission adopted a resolution reimbursing capital expenditures made previously, thus transferring the American Rescue Plan Act funds to general funds.

The next meeting of the Covington County Commission will be held Tuesday, August 27, at 9 a.m., at the Covington County Administration Building.

  • Qatar Spends Big After World Cup – The US Times

Qatar will host more international events in order to boost its economy, since the 2022 World Cup has ended. The event attracted over 1.4 million visitors. The luxury hotels that were built to host the 2022 World Cup have had to lay off hundreds of employees because they are unable to fill rooms worth thousands of dollars per night. As thousands of foreign workers have left the Gulf State after the World Cup, shopping malls are flooded with job applications.

Qatar’s economy is still healthy despite the post-World Cup gloom. It recorded a trade surplus in 2022 of almost $100 billion. Qatar’s economy, boosted by its natural-gas wealth, is expected to grow at 3.4 percent in 2023. This will be among the highest growth rates in the Middle East. Qatar invests in tourism, and hosts more major events for visitors.

Akbar al-Baker is the CEO of Qatar Airways. He said the country would welcome five million more visitors in 2019, more than double the number from pre-pandemic 2019 Qatar is preparing the ground for an horticultural exhibition that will run from October to December. The expo, Qatar hopes, will attract one million visitors. A new racetrack is being built to host the second Qatar Formula One Grand Prix on 8 October. Qatar will also host the 2027 Basketball World Cup, which will feature 24 nations. Prime Minister of Qatar is expected to announce a number of new economic initiatives. This will be in response to the growing competition coming from Saudi Arabia which has undertaken many reforms.

  • Kamalanomics Blowback Begins As Food Prices Hit Record Highs | The Liberty Beacon

Kamalanomics Blowback Begins As Food Prices Hit Record Highs

“If your opponent claims you’re a “communist,” maybe don’t start with an economic agenda that can (accurately) be labeled as federal price controls.” ~Washington Post

(TYLER DURDEN REPORTS) – “KamalaCosts” and “Kamalanomics” are trending on X on Friday afternoon as Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled her strategy to address the crushing economic environment faced by the working poor and middle class during her tenure as vice president in the Biden administration.

Recall that VP Harris was the biggest ‘Bidenomics’ cheerleader.

It makes very little sense why VP Harris has recently admitted at campaign rallies there’s an ongoing inflation storm and affordability crisis, yet it appears she is throwing President Biden under the bus. However, she is second in command and trying to deflect accountability for nation-killing, out-of-control government spending that stoked the inflation storm.

Americans are beyond frustrated with inflation that the Biden-Harris administration has fueled over the past 3.5 years while VP Kamala Harris travels across the country, avoiding ‘unscripted’ press conferences and trying to convince voters at highly scripted campaign rallies that she’s not responsible.

After stealing former President Trump’s proposed ‘no tax on tips‘ plan, the geniuses behind VP Harris’ campaign thought it would be brilliant to introduce communist-style government price controls on grocery stores and food companies as their first major economic policy. The move was a complete disaster, and even the leftists at the Washington Post pointed out that it was a poor policy choice…

“If your opponent claims you’re a “communist,” maybe don’t start with an economic agenda that can (accurately) be labeled as federal price controls.”

Investment analyst Lyn Alden pointed out on X that grocery stores like Kroger have “razor-thin profit margins.” So the whole ‘corporate price gouging’ narrative by Harris’ team is just ‘malarkey.’

Producers of food products have similar margins in the low double-digit range.

House Republicans reminded folks on X today about the sour subject of Biden-Harris’ food price inflation crisis:

Others pointed out that ‘Kamalanomics’ is just an extension of ‘Bidenomics’ and focused on the massive food price surges.

  • Court assigns fiduciary to review Mabel Amos Trust

Court assigns fiduciary to review Mabel Amos Trust

    Published 9:15 am Saturday, August 17, 2024

A special fiduciary was appointed by a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge on August 8 to oversee and audit the Mabel Amos Memorial Trust Fund.

Circuit Judge Greg Griffin appointed James C. White Sr., an accountant from Birmingham, to oversee the trust fund while the court decides if Regions Financial will be allowed to stay on as the trust’s manager.

The order restarts an investigation of the trust that was halted in June by the Alabama Supreme Court, which ruled that the lower court ‘exceeded its discretion’ by sending the case to a special master.

In the latest court order, White is given 90 days to review trust records and conduct an audit, ultimately deciding whether trustee fees collected by Regions constitute a ‘breach of trust.’

The action is the result of litigation filed by members of the Amos family. Mabel Amos, Alabama’s first female secretary of state, died in 1999 leaving a trust fund to be used for scholarships.

Among the claims in the lawsuit is that Regions charged exorbitant fees and steered scholarship money to trust board members. The plaintiffs in the case claim Regions’ fees greatly increased after oil was found on Amos’s Conecuh County property. Prior to that, only natural gas was known to be on the property. The suit claims that in 2010, Regions charged about $7,000 for five hours of work each week. The next year, the same five hours cost $92,736.

The lawsuit also claims that trustees benefitted personally by awarding scholarships to children of trust board members, including those attending ‘expensive, out-of-state’ schools. The scholarship fund is said to require that recipients be in financial need and that they attend Alabama colleges or universities.

According to Judge Griffin’s order, tax filings show that Alabama Ethics Commission Executive Director Tom Albritton allegedly received $135,000 from the trust while he was a trustee, which the judge said “violated the Trust’s prohibition on private inurement and self-dealing on the part of the trustees.” Griffin’s order also stated that children and grandchildren of staff of the trustees’ law firm, the child of a former partner and judge, and children of wealthy clients of the law firm, received scholarship money.

Judge Griffin also stated in the order that the amount of money received by those associated with the trustees is “not currently ascertainable.”

The lawsuit seeks to remove Regions Bank as the trustee and current board members, as well as restore “misappropriated” funds.

In July, Deputy Alabama Attorney General Allen Dodd told the Montgomery County Circuit Court that a settlement had been reached in the case. That settlement would have to be approved by Judge Griffin to end the litigation. In his order, Griffin said he would decide on whether to approve the settlement upon the completion of the special fiduciary’s 90-day review.

  • Biden-Marcos Talk to Secure South China Sea – The US Times

US President Joe Biden met with his Philippine counterpart Ferdinand Marcos to discuss China’s aggressive expansion in the South China Sea, including its strategic islands and trade routes. Marcos’s four-day visit to the US is his first in decades. According to a US official, it is the first time that the two countries have met “at this intensity and level” for many years. Washington and its Asian partners are interested in the Philippines because it is close to Taiwan and key sea routes. Biden’s administration has been prompted to quickly boost its military capabilities by the tension and constant saber rattling about Taiwan.

According to a senior US official, recent events have prompted both capitals to focus more on taking steps to improve engagement between the United States of America and the Philippines on the security front. Manila wants reassurances and is determined to maintain stability and peace. The Philippines is implementing new “bilateral defense guidelines”, including a number of measures to support the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Officials also stated that new military muscles are being implemented in response to the changing geostrategic conditions in the Asia-Pacific.

The statement made by a senior US official ahead of Marcos’s visit highlights Asia-Pacific engagements within the Indo-Pacific. It is an important time as China asserts its sovereignty claims over the South China Sea despite a ruling by international law that these claims are unfounded. The Philippines has identified four bases to which US forces will have access. One of these is near the tense Spratly Islands. This has alarmed China who accuses Washington of trying drive a wedge in between Beijing and Manila.

  • Grand Theft MAGA | The Liberty Beacon

    By: Douglas Schwartz

Kamaga” Harris is 2024’s latest MAGA convert. If you can’t beat Trump, steal his issues. Her latest positions include strong borders, no tax on tips, tough on crime, pro-fracking, child tax credits, and support for Israel. At least for this week. Lacking viable policies, Kamala plagiarizes Trump’s act. Plagiarism runs deep in her party. Her running mate stole actual warriors’ valor. Biden’s covert 1987 plagiarism doomed his first presidential run. He was the first to withdraw from that election’s primaries. Harris withdrew first from the presidential primaries in 2019 and now openly plagiarizes Trump’s policies.

Immigration is Kamala’s greatest vulnerability. Once she clinched the nomination, border czar denial became essential. Democrats’ urban base is gutted by the criminality and costs caused by open borders. No other issue so effectively herds fleeing Democrats into Trumpland’s guest quarters.

Harris will never eschew Democrats’ sacramental issues: abortion, antisemitism, and genital mutilation. Unless they can kill or maim it, they are uninterested. Everything else is on the table. Kamala’s fake toward the center doesn’t attract new voters while simultaneously repelling existing supporters. She should register Republican, run to Trump’s right, endorse Project 2025, and be done with it. A campaign ad claims: “As president, she will hire thousands more border agents and crack down on fentanyl and human trafficking. Fixing the border is tough. So is Kamala Harris.” Sure. Such messaging unsuccessfully targets the Right and repels the Left. This self-defeating strategy underscores her party’s governing bankruptcy. Biden destroyed the brand, ensuring his successor’s defeat. Harris has no choice but to fake Right, toward a distant center.

Harris also destroys any final vestiges of legitimacy retained by legacy media busy self-destructing in its coverage of Kamala 2.0. Jimmy Kimmel is right: late night TV is toast. Fake candidates require fake news. When Trump floated exempting tips from taxation, CBS declared: “Former President Donald Trump’s vow to stop taxing tips would cost the federal government up to $250 billion over 10 years, according to a nonpartisan watchdog group… Trump’s proposal, which doesn’t address how it would be paid for, is bad tax policy because it would create an incentive to push more income into tipping.” CBS two months later: “Vice President Kamala Harris is rolling out a new policy position, saying she’ll fight to end taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

Most media outlets are hopeless. Washington Post schizophrenic headlines (more so than normal), track the media’s angst:

    • August 11: Opinion — Questions we’d love to ask Kamala Harris. Why has she changed so many positions since 2020? How would she govern differently than Joe Biden?

    • August 12: Kamala Harris the senator: A bold statement but a thin record.

    • August 12: Opinion — As Harris learned from Biden, avoiding interviews is good strategy. Kamala Harris is paying no price for ducking reporters and not holding news conferences.

Time Magazine’s fawning cover story (for which Harris declined to be interviewed):

The Reintroduction of Kamala Harris. The Vice President’s star turn atop the new Democratic ticket has reshaped the presidential race. Harris has pulled off the swiftest vibe shift in modern political history… Over the span of a few weeks in late July and early August, Harris became a political phenomenon.

Press accounts of her campaign’s vibe rapidly make the Babylon Bee irrelevant. Reporters are reduced to transcribing rally events and parroting press releases, enablers of Kamala’s mendacity. “Investigative journalism” is obsolete. Today’s job description requires concealing facts. Kamala’s dual messaging strategy — one version for existing supporters, another for those requiring conversion, is doomed. 2020 saw Biden physically hide. Harris virtually sequesters behind aides and messaging to block press scrutiny. An added benefit of this approach is so no policy proclamation can be directly tied to her. A pronoun-declared aide can be used to provide plausible deniability.

The insurmountable issue is the contradiction of a radical marxist feigning moderation. Wishful thinking predicates Kamala 2.0. The Left must believe her move toward the center is a head fake. The Right must suspend discernment. Neither will occur. A strategy dependent on gullibility and ignorance is suicidal, especially with voters increasingly gaslighting resistant. Trapped between the candidate and the public, the press grows increasingly frustrated by its assigned role in this charade: abandon norms, including press conferences or interviews, ignore obvious fraud.

Some journalists are awakening and heading for the exits. They began pushing back even before the campaign got caught fraudulently editing headlines to appear supportive of their candidate.

CNN is demanding press conferences: “Would it kill you guys to have a press conference? …A campaign rally is not a press conference… One interview before the end of the month is not a lot.” If Jim Acosta is lost, so is the election.

Even the NY Times is frustrated by the candidate’s silent treatment, noting she has granted a total of 70 seconds of press access: “Kamala Harris Isn’t Giving Interviews. Any Questions?” CNN: Kevin Munoz, a spokesman for Ms. Harris, said… the campaign was “being strategic, creative and expeditious” in using TV ads, rallies, local organizers, “and of course interviews that reach our target voters.”

Except there are no interviews. Even in friendly interviews, fielding pre-arranged questions, Harris would bomb. She is too insecure to exploit even friendly venues such as “The View” or Colbert. Her campaign rollout failed to motivate undecided voters. During the debate Trump will fact check Kamala 2.0 when she plagiarizes his act. One and done. Trump intends to turn the two debates Kamala appears likely to skip into town halls. Walz’s stolen valor albatross precludes his press availabilities.

Appeasement of both sides ensures both are antagonized. Opposition ads write themselves. Kamala’s rebranding is 2024’s New Coke, a waste of time and money. Republicans might consider donating to amplify her self-destruction. Shoplifting Trump’s no taxes on tips proposal was done by the person who proudly cast the deciding Senate vote to hire tens of thousands of IRS agents. The Biden/Harris administration’s hypocrisy is transparent:

    February 2023:

Biden’s IRS plans to crack down on waiters’ tips. “They’re coming after waitresses’ tips now,” tax expert Mike Palicz says.

    August 2024:

Q: Thanks, Karine. Over the weekend, the vice president said she would — she followed former president Donald Trump in saying she would support proposals that would not tax tipped wages. If such a similar bill made its way to the president… would he sign that?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Yeah, absolutely. Look, this is something that the president supports. He supports eliminating taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers while also raising minimum wage and preventing the wealthy from gaming the system.

Nobody expects Biden to push through a bill. Consumers of the campaign’s messaging risk permanent brain damage. The NY Times could recycle its November 2019 epitaph:

How Kamala Harris’s Campaign Unraveled. She has proved to be an uneven campaigner who changes her message and tactics to little effect and has a staff torn into factions.
