  • Fact Check: Why this claim about antifa at the DNC is False

As Chicago prepared to welcome roughly 50,000 people for the four-day 2024 Democratic National Convention from Aug. 19-22, an X post warned that even more people had poured in to demonstrate.

“BREAKING: According to GPS tracking data: At least 53,411 foreign Antifa and 21,034 domestic Antifa are already gathering in Chicago, to create chaos during the Harris-Walz DNC,” read the Aug. 17 post.

The post also shared a picture of a crowd of helmeted people dressed in black, standing arm-in-arm on a street, their faces covered with scarves.

But this photo doesn’t show antifa in Chicago. And Chicago police have not said antifa is gathering in Chicago in such large numbers.

A reverse image search shows the photo in the post was taken Aug. 17, 2019, in Portland, Oregon by Getty Images photographer Stephanie Keith. Getty’s photo archive includes this image description: “Members of Antifa line up during an alt-right rally on August 17, 2019 in Portland, Oregon. Anti-fascism demonstrators gathered to counter-protest a rally held by far-right, extremist groups.”

Antifa, which stands for “anti-fascist,” is a loosely organized coalition of left-wing activists who protest far-right ideologies and white supremacy. The movement has been around for decades, but it became more active following former President Donald Trump’s 2016 election.

Although demonstrators have gathered in Chicago to protest the war in Gaza, security officials have not identified antifa as a major influence. PBS News and The Associated Press reported Aug. 19 that pro-Palestinian protest organizers had hoped for 20,000 protesters at the DNC that day, but fewer showed up.

Police have neither given a crowd estimate, nor have they discussed antifa as a major force in the demonstrations.

When we contacted the Chicago Police Department about the X post’s claim, the agency pointed us to an Aug. 13 press conference about police efforts for the DNC.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said during the press conference that police were working with the U.S. Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism to monitor DNC-related social media activity.

“A lot of times we’ll hear threats or we’ll see things,” Snelling said. “We look at the credibility of it, but obviously, we take them all seriously. So when we see something that we think could be volatile, we get out in front of it and put preventative measures in place.”

PolitiFact also reviewed Day 1 and Day 2 of the city of Chicago’s press conferences and found no mentions of antifa gathering in the city.

After the convention’s first day, news reports described several demonstrations against U.S. support for Israel in the Israel-Hamas war by pro-Palestinian protesters. Police arrested 13 protesters on the first day — mostly in connection with pushing down fences placed on the DNC convention center’s perimeter, according to the AP and CNN.

The city of Chicago installed a third row of fencing around the United Center’s perimeter, where the keynotes addresses are being held, after dozens of protesters “breached the outer barrier,” CNN reported Aug. 19.

But we found no evidence from police or in on-the-scene news reports that demonstrators linked to antifa played a dominant role.

We rate the claim that a photo shows “Antifa are already gathering in Chicago, to create chaos during the Harris-Walz DNC” False.

  • MEET THE MODELING AGENCY AT THE FOREFRONT OF INCLUSIVITY IN AFRICA – The US Times

Inclusivity and representation are still nonexistent in the African modeling industry, but Misty Glam Company, a Lagos, Nigeria-based agency, is on a mission to change the narrative. Misty Glam Company is the first truly inclusive commercial modeling agency in Africa, with a portfolio of models across diverse body types, ages, skin tones, and groups. In an industry where models have to look a certain way or conform to certain beauty standards before they can have a career, this fast-rising commercial modeling agency is on a quest to challenge the status quo and make it possible for the young child living on the streets of Africa who does not fit into the conventional standards of beauty to actualize her modeling ambition.

Misty Glam Company scouts and trains differently -abled models, including models with albinism, models with dwarfism, elderly models, petite models, plus-sized models, kid models, and other rare talents who do not necessarily have the stereotypical model physique. They then oversee their management, representation, and positioning for opportunities while ensuring that the models receive fair compensation.

Although many global brands, especially those in the fashion and beauty industries like Fenty Beauty and Savage Fenty, are now leading by example and ensuring greater representation in their choice of models for their brand commercials and communications, many brands in Africa have yet to include certain groups that make up a key segment of their target audience.

“Millions of people in Africa struggle with negative body image due to the media’s projection of what conventional beauty is, and Misty Glam Company was founded to correct the prevailing problems of unrealistic beauty standards in the beauty, advertising, and modeling industries.” It is ironic that the top African brands preach inclusivity and claim they want everyone, regardless of their skin color, body type, and appearance, to buy their products but yet refuse to use models who look like them in their ads. Who says a mother of four or a person with a physical disability cannot model for products they use every day? “Every time a person sees advertisements or commercials, we want them to see models who resemble them.”

Misty Glam Company’s creative director, Owolabi Misturah Abisola, explains.

“As a newly established agency, we understand that causing a shift in mindset in an industry that has been around for decades is not going to happen in a day, a year, or even five years, but we are prepared for the task at hand,” she continued. We cannot change everything on our own; there are many other factors that must first be altered. “We are open to working with local and international organizations that share this vision and are prepared to join forces with us to achieve inclusivity and representation in the African modeling industry,” the statement continued.

Misty Glam Company scouts, trains, manages, and provides models for TV commercials, brand shoots, marketing communication campaigns, product shoots, editorials, promotional campaigns, fashion campaigns, runway shows, brand photography, brand influencing, music

videos, and more. Although it has been only one year since its establishment, models of the Misty Glam Company have already been featured in brand shoots by international companies such as OPPO, MTN, and LG. Misty Glam Company takes model bookings via Meta’s social media platforms—Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp—as well as on their website, mistyglamcompany.com. The agency continues to wax strong as they scout, train, and represent the best modeling talents out of Africa.

  • Trump, Vance Pledge To Reduce Crime, “Re-Fund Police” | The Liberty Beacon

Donald Trump, JD Vance Pledge To Reduce Crime, “Re-Fund Police”

“When I’m president of the United States again, we will never even think about or mention the words, ‘defund the police.’” ~Donald Trump

By Janice Hisle | The Epoch Times

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), took their “Make America Safe Again” message to police departments in two battleground states on Aug. 20, pledging to improve circumstances for police officers.

The Republican candidates’ appearances are part of their campaign strategy while Democrats gather at their own nominating convention in Chicago

During his speech at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Howell, Michigan, Trump said: “When I’m president of the United States again, we will never even think about or mention the words, ‘defund the police.’”

Instead, officials need to “re-fund” the police, he said, and also should grant officers greater protection against lawsuits and prosecutions that they may unfairly face “for doing their jobs,” Trump said.

“Under my leadership, no community will be surrendered to violent criminals; no citizen will be abandoned to migrant crime.”

Record numbers of illegal immigrants have been entering the United States since President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office in 2021. Some have been arrested and charged for high-profile violent crimes in recent months.

While Biden has blamed Congress for inaction on a bipartisan border bill, Trump counters that, during his presidency, he issued executive orders to close the border and take other actions to clamp down on illegal immigration.

    Vance in Wisconsin

Earlier on Tuesday, Vance spoke in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

“We don’t just have a vision on the Trump campaign. We don’t just have a bunch of promises on the Trump campaign. We have got four years of Donald Trump’s successful leadership that brought public safety to our streets, and that is something to celebrate and look forward to,” Vance said.

His audience was also filled with law enforcement officers.

Vance said that, if he and Trump are elected, they will end “sanctuary cities” that shield illegal immigrants from federal immigration authorities, deport violent illegal aliens, and protect police from “frivolous lawsuits.”

“The reason that it’s so hard for the police to do their job, sometimes, is they know: If they do their job, they’re going to get sued for it,” Vance said.

    Crime Data Questioned

While the Democratic National Committee’s policy platform touted a 50-year low in violent crime, Trump and his campaign say more reliable data suggest that’s not the case.

After Harris and Biden took office, “the FBI ditched the crime data reporting system used for more than 100 years for a ‘modernized’ system that many of the nation’s largest police departments … aren’t using,” the Trump campaign said in an emailed statement. “There’s not less crime; there’s just less *reporting of crime.*

Trump suggested crime data are skewed because police are arresting fewer people while they lack support, are understaffed, and want to avoid legal peril.

The National Crime Prevention Research Center says FBI statistics are inaccurate because “victims don’t report most crimes.” The National Crime Victimization Survey provides more accurate insights, the center said, adding that the report shows reported and nonreported violent crimes went up 42 percent between 2020 and 2022, the most recent year available.

    Trump, Vance Together

Trump and Vance will appear together in Asheboro, North Carolina, on Aug. 21 to highlight their plans to “Make America Strong Again.”

On Aug. 22, Trump will travel to the U.S.-Mexico border in Montezuma Pass, Arizona, while Vance will travel to Valdosta, Georgia, to talk about improving immigration policies to “Make America Secure Again.”

On Aug. 23, Trump will hold a rally in Glendale, Arizona, and will also lead a “No Tax on Tips” session in Las Vegas as part of the Trump–Vance weeklong “barnstorming” tour of states that could help decide the Nov. 5 presidential election that pits them against the Democrats’ Harris–Walz ticket.

  • Ill. man pleads guilty to killing missing girlfriend who was allegedly dismembered

DECATUR, Ill. (TCN) — A 47-year-old man pleaded guilty last week to killing his missing on-again, off-again girlfriend whose remains have still not been found.

Macon County court records show Troy Slaw entered the plea on Aug. 16 for the first-degree murder of Norma Crutchfield. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped charges of dismemberment of a human body and concealment of death.

Crutchfield was reported missing to the Decatur Police Department on Nov. 20, 2020. According to the Missing Persons Awareness Network, Crutchfield was last seen on Oct. 31, 2020, when her mom dropped her off at Slaw’s house. She was reportedly believed to have been in the victim of domestic violence because her mother said she had seen her with black eyes after spending time at Slaw’s house.

Decatur Police arrested Slaw and an alleged co-conspirator, Chase Freeman, in May 2022 following a “lengthy and complex investigation.”

WAND-TV reports Freeman told police Slaw showed him a body in a closet in November 2020. Freeman said the victim had been stabbed in the chest and the body had been in the closet for several days. Freeman allegedly claimed Slaw put curtains and large bags around the bathroom asked him to help get rid of the body. Freeman reportedly said he wouldn’t, then allegedly ended up helping Slaw.

Court documents cited by WCIA-TV say Freeman admitted to disposing of the dismembered body parts in the garbage.

Decatur Police executed a search warrant at the home in December 2020 and found blood evidence matching Crutchfield.

Freeman, who has been charged with dismembering a human body and concealing homicidal death, is still awaiting trial.

Slaw’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 4.

  • Fact Check: Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce wasn’t fined, ejected for kneeling during national anthem

The NFL’s regular season doesn’t start until Sept. 5, when the Kansas City Chiefs play the Baltimore Ravens. But a recent Facebook post claims Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has already been kicked off the field.

“Travis Kelce kneels during national anthem fined $10 million and thrown out of the game,” reads text in an image of Kelce kneeling.

The Aug. 19 post featuring the image said, “Travis Kelce took a knee during the national anthem, a move that cost him a staggering $10 million fine and an immediate ejection from the game.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

The Kelce photo is old; it was taken in August 2018 during training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. A photo caption on Getty Images’ website says the photo shows Kelce as he “kneels on the sidelines during training camp.”

Kelce has kneeled during the national anthem before. In 2016, Colin Kaepernick, then a San Francisco 49ers quarterback, started sitting and then taking a knee during the anthem to protest the treatment of Black Americans after several unarmed Black men had been shot that summer. Then, in 2017, Kelce “followed Colin Kaepernick’s lead and took a knee during the pre-game national anthem ceremony in support of teammates who were protesting racist police brutality,” The Guardian reported.

But the claim that Kelce was fined $10 million for taking a knee and expelled from a game originated in 2023 on a satire site.

We found no evidence, such as credible news stories or NFL statements, that any such thing happened.

We rate claims it did False.

  • Biden Approved Secret Nuclear War Strategy Focused On Simultaneous Conflicts | The Liberty Beacon

Biden Approved Secret Nuclear War Strategy Focused On Simultaneous Conflicts

Dave DeCamp | AntiWar.com via ZeroHedge

President Biden approved in March a new nuclear strategic plan that includes preparations for a simultaneous nuclear war with Russia, China, and North KoreaThe New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The US nuclear strategy is updated about every four years or so and is highly classified. The Times described the new strategy as the “first to examine in detail whether the United States is prepared to respond to nuclear crises that break out simultaneously or sequentially, with a combination of nuclear and nonnuclear weapons.”

    Via AP

US officials, including Pranay Vaddi, an arms control official on the National Security Council, have made public comments about the changes to the strategy.

Vaddi said in June that the new strategy emphasizes “the need to deter Russia, the [People’s Republic of China] and North Korea simultaneously.”

The strategy also focuses on China for the first time, as the Pentagon has claimed China could increase its nuclear stockpile to 1,500 by 2035. Current estimates put China’s arsenal at about 500.

China’s arsenal is still just a fraction of what the US and Russia possess. The State Department said in July that the US has 5,748 warheads, including 2,000 that are retired and awaiting dismantlement.

According to the Arms Control Association, Russia has 5,580 warheads, including 1,200 that are retired and awaiting dismantlement. Russia has 1,549 nuclear warheads that are deployed, and the US deploys 1,419.

The New START treaty between the US and Russia caps the deployment of warheads at 1,550. While the treaty has broken down due to tensions over the war in Ukraine, both sides have committed to staying within the deployment limits, but it’s unclear if they will once New START officially expires in 2026.

While China has significantly fewer warheads than the US and Russia, a nuclear exchange between the US and China could still be enough to end life as we know it.

Despite the risk of a US-China war quickly turning nuclear, US military officials are openly planning for a direct clash with Beijing and claim that the US could “win.”

The nuclear strategy’s focus on China aligns with the Pentagon’s 2022 National Defense Strategy, which names Beijing as the top threat facing the US, with Russia coming in second.
