  • Author Chevel Nelson states Words are incredibly sexy. – The US Times

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chevel Nelson.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

Allow me first to describe what I mean about words are incredibly sexy. I mean not sexy in the sensual way but sexy in the exciting appealing way. In order to tell stories that leave you vested in the characters you have to make their stories exciting. Writing has always been my safe space, my escapism from the craziness of life. I am more known for being a poet and have read all over New York City and have previously written two poetry books. Originally, I was writing another book and God said no, that this was the book I was to write. Had no context on the subject matter. I fought tooth and nail not to write this book, however here it is and I am super excited about it.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

Life itself is a challenge. Just the basic day to day. As Langston Hughes wrote, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor—Bare.”

I have felt bare before. Stripped to my core. When I started to write this book, I had two characters. Diane & Patrick. Those two became thirteen. The year I started writing this book, I was going to the school part time to finish my bachelor’s degree, I did this while being a full-time employee, full time wife, full time mother, full time daughter, sister and friend. Failure has never been an option. Does failure happen? Sure, it does, however instead of looking at it as an F, flip it sideways and use it as a step to your next level. My confidence did struggle during this new writing journey. I didn’t feel confident to write a novel and didn’t feel qualified to write this novel. What I realized in the process is that I am more than confident and qualified. All I had to do with was just to start. The first step is to just start. Start somewhere, anywhere.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

My books are aimed at marginalized individuals. Those who feel unheard and unseen. This book is about characters who went through difficulties and how they persevered, and the characters just happen to be gay. Hence the play on words in the title, My Gay Ain’t Happy. Reading other authors and figuring out how their minds work is thrilling to me. Everyone has a story, and every story deserves to be heard. Being a poet is my core, however I have a bunch of stories and individuals in my head that want their stories told. If I tell a fictional story and someone can see themselves in it then I did something right. I will always tell anyone that you want to work with me because I am beautifully indomitable, which means I am beautifully resilient beyond belief. Beautifully impossible to subdue or defeat. We can all win. There is enough out here for all of us and enough stories for all of us to learn from. Why compete when we can collaborate.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Find joy. Make finding joy your goal and mission. Joy will make the dark times much lighter. Also, learn something new every day.
Always remember that no one can take away what you know. Knowledge is free.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success for me is simply waking up every day. Waking up allows me to do new things. Contrary to popular belief fame and money are not success. Fame is fleeting and money is numbers and numbers never end.
Having joy is successful to me. Some people never find joy.

The biggest success is when someone says it was because of me they could. There is no better feeling for me.

    What’s next for you?

Recently it seems this short story book is going to be the start of a series. Each character will have their own book. I believe the characters and the readers deserve a back story of what made the characters the way they are. There is also another three unrelated books ready to go sitting in my head.

Simple answer is, I plan to keep writing as long as I have stories to write about.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

  • SAF’s Newly Produced Humanitarian Movie “Lost In 24” Uncovers Human Trafficking – The US Times

March 2023, Superstar Art Foundation completed the production of its humanity themed feature film “Lost In 24”. As a part of SAF’s film production program for humanitarian purpose.

“Lost In 24” is a captivating and heartwarming suspense film that tells the story of divorced mother Jennifer and her daughter Emily who travel to Texas for a vacation, preparing to start a new romance. However, Jennifer suddenly discovers that her daughter has mysteriously disappeared and has been involved in a murder case. Desperate, she seek help with police officer Court to find her missing daughter and implement her revenge plan.

The film reveals for the first time the criminal underworld of illegal organ trafficking. With a tight plot and gripping suspense at every turn, the film impacts the viewer’s visual senses with its strong visual contrasts, emotional core, and unexpected story ending. This film is a must-see for anyone who loves this genre of film, as it blends suspense, action, and emotion.

May Liu, who served as the film’s screenwriter, director, and producer, said in an interview with journalist, “I have always wanted to make a film about humanity. In my heart, I am a warrior, and I believe that film is the best way to spread positive energy to society and help people recognize good from evil and fight for justice. This film is a humanity-themed film that I created for the Superstar Art Foundation and my first film as a director. It was very difficult because we did not have external investment, but we were fortunate to have the support of my friends, which allowed us to complete the film in such a short period of time. Of course, if we had more investment, I think I could have done better, such as achieving better picture quality with better equipment.”

This film was a comprehensive challenge for me. Although I had previously worked as a producer on several films, in this film, I was the director, leading the story and script creation, selecting actors, purchasing props and costumes, starring, and performing post-production editing. These tasks were not ones that we were unwilling to pay others to do, but they believed that these tasks were impossible to complete within the specified time, so I had to do them myself. Because I am someone who pursues results, in my dictionary, there is nothing that is “impossible.” When I decide to do something, no matter how difficult it is, I will complete it.

Our casts also accepted the challenge of this film, realistically interpreting their roles, and add their own spice into the role. The performance of the heroine is also remarkable, especially the image of the rebellious girl Emily played by the 17-year-old Texas actress Lana Gillett. The police officer played by actor Marcus Medina contributed a lot of action scenes to the film, which added to the film’s highlights. Although some of them had doubts during the filming process about whether I could complete the filming in time. I think this is a fixed mindset people have about female directors, and this is exactly why I wanted to make this movie.

During the 3-year pandemic, I saw many people’s misfortunes around me. I cannot provide economic help to everyone, but as an artistic creator, the only thing I can do is to use my own creation to call for attention from the world and provide more help to the unfortunate people.

“If we were to look at it from a business perspective, this may not be a perfect commercial film, but it is a genuine one because each character in the film represents our true selves.”

“Lost In 24” uses aerial photography to capture the beautiful scenery of the city and discovers the beautiful scenery of Texas. The emotional core of the film lies in Jennifer’s emotional and psychological changes, from her rebellious attitude towards her daughter, to her desire for a new romance, from her anxiety upon learning of her daughter’s disappearance to carrying out her revenge plan. The audience’s concern for the fate of her daughter, Emily, continues to push the story to a climax, and the ending of the story is both unexpected and reasonable.

The pacing of the movie is well-balanced, with tense and suspenseful moments interspersed with quieter scenes that allow the characters to develop. The editing is also top-notch, with seamless transitions and a consistent tone throughout.

Another strong point of the movie is its use of violence. While there are some intense and graphic scenes, they serve a purpose in advancing the plot and developing the characters. The violence is never gratuitous or excessive, and it adds to the realism of the story.

Overall, “Lost in 24” is a gripping crime-thriller that will satisfy fans of the genre. It features impressive acting performances, an intricate plot, and strong pacing and editing. If you’re looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you thinking long after the credits roll, “Lost in 24” is definitely worth watching.

The film is joining the competition of Film Festival, and estimated screening in USA in May, 2023.

  • Fact Check: No, Trump did not say this viral quote about buying cereal in pounds

Ketchup, bread and cookies served as backdrop props at a recent press conference by former President Donald Trump. But did he make this statement about cereal prices? A viral social Threads post claims he did.

The Aug.17 post, which criticized Trump for being out-of-touch with food prices, uses a screenshot from an X post that claimed he said: “You used to be able to get cereal for 20, 30 bucks a pound. Now it’s at least a hundred dollars a pound, probably. They debit it straight from your account when you show them your grocery ID.”

That screenshot shows Trump speaking at an Aug. 15 press conference at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. We saw similar claims on X.

The Threads post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Threads, and Instagram.)

But a review of the press conference’s transcripts shows that Trump did not say these words. Early in his remarks, he criticized the Biden-Harris administration for rising grocery prices but not with the quote the viral posts attribute to him.

“Grocery prices have skyrocketed: cereals are up 26%, bread is up 24%, butter is up 37%, baby formula is up 30%, flour is up 38% and eggs are up 46%,” he said. “And many items are up at much higher rates than that.”

He also responded to a reporter’s question about his message to families “going into debt just to pay for groceries.” He answered: “My message to them would be very simple: Vote for Trump and we are going to fix the problem.”

Trump has previously talked about people using an ID for grocery purchases, but he said that in a very different context. In 2018, Trump said he was in favor of requiring voter ID cards because “if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID.”

Fact-checkers roundly debunked that grocery ID claim. Most purchases in retail stores don’t require IDs, except in specific conditions such as the purchase of alcohol, tobacco or while shopping in stores such as Costco that require memberships.

We rate the claim that Trump said this viral quote about buying cereal in pounds False.

  • Pa. parents sentenced for forcing 7 children to live in 'nightmarish conditions' with little food

WEST ROCKHILL TOWNSHIP, Pa. (TCN) — A father and mother will spend up to 16 years in state prison for forcing their seven children to live in “nightmarish conditions” in a run-down trailer without any cleaning products, soap, toothpaste, or other hygienic items.

According to an Aug. 20 news release from the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, a judge sentenced 48-year-old Shane Robertson and 38-year-old Crystal Robertson to eight to 16 years. They will have to undergo a mental health evaluation, treatment, and a drug and alcohol program. The parents must not contact their children until they are 18 and can only do so with a court-appointed therapist’s approval. The defendants are also not allowed to own any animals during their supervision.

Shane Robertson and Crystal Robertson previously pleaded guilty to seven felony counts of child endangerment and six counts of animal neglect.

Judge Charissa Liller, who sentenced the couple, called them “two of the worst parents I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Liller told Shane Robertson and Crystal Robertson, “It is appalling that you would live in these conditions with your seven children. You treated your animals better than you treated your children. You kept them caged up like animals, but you weren’t treating them as good.”

In April 2023, the Pennridge Regional Police Department responded to a report of two children stealing items from an abandoned trailer. Officers found one of the Robertsons’ children barefoot and another with “dirty and ill-fitting clothing.” The two kids reportedly told officials they went into the trailer to retrieve a blanket so they could “keep their rats warm since their parents had no money.”

Police contacted the Robertsons, who were not home at the time, and they arrived shortly after. According to the district attorney’s office, officers searched their trailer on Roseann Lane and noticed it was in “obvious disrepair and disarray.”

Police reportedly observed filthy clothes all over the trailer, holes in the walls and doors, and a decaying floor. Animal feces were discovered on clothing and some of the floors.

Prosecutors said the Robertsons initially said they had three children, but police learned there were six girls and one boy between the ages of 4 and 16 in the home. The children were transported to the hospital, and it was determined six of them were clinically malnourished.

Many of the victims were reportedly sick. Two tested positive for COVID-19, some had poor vision, one had maggots in her hair, and all of the children had bad dental hygiene, according to the district attorney’s office. Two victims reportedly underwent oral surgery to have five of their teeth pulled, and one child had 13 visible cavities and a dangerous abscess.

Prosecutors said the refrigerator had a bicycle lock, and Crystal Robertson kept the key in her bag. Officials obtained messages and saw that Crystal Robertson reportedly said the children went to the refrigerator to “steal food.” She allegedly called them “garbage disposals.” Police found insufficient food inside the fridge.

Upon further investigation, authorities reportedly learned the children didn’t have any formal education, and they “lacked basic knowledge,” including some who didn’t know their birthday. Prosecutors said the victims appeared to have social anxiety, and they told officials they didn’t like being in public.

According to the district attorney’s office, the Robertsons had a dirty bed and kept several animals, including two dogs, two turtles, two rabbits, snakes, toads, a lizard, and dozens of rats. Prosecutors said, “The only notable food found in the trailer was for the animals.”

In court, prosecutors played TikTok videos from the lizard’s account, including clips of Crystal Robertson feeding the lizard pieces of salmon, brushing its teeth, visiting the Easter bunny, and dressing the lizard in costumes.

Deputy District Attorney Brittney Kern said, “They chose themselves, and they chose their animals.”

The Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services took custody of the children, while the animals were surrendered to the Bucks County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Since their removal, prosecutors said the children “have shown signs of flourishing.” However, Kern said, “The psychological effects will last a lifetime.”

  • Fact Check: J.D. Vance’s False claim that Harris wants to give immigrants in the US illegally $25,000 for homes

Sen. J.D. Vance, former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, attacked Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign pledge to ease the burden costly down payments put on first-time homebuyers.

“Kamala Harris wants to give $25,000 to illegal aliens to buy American homes,” the Ohio Republican wrote Aug. 16 on X. “This will only further exacerbate the housing shortage in our country. It’s a disgrace. We should be making it easier and more affordable for American citizens to buy homes.”

The Vance campaign pointed PolitiFact to Harris’ recently announced proposal that would provide up to $25,000 for first-time homebuyers to put toward a down payment on a home.

Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, debuted the plan at an Aug. 16 campaign rally. She didn’t discuss technicalities, so it’s unclear how the policy would be carried out or who could qualify for the assistance. Here’s what we know.

What is Harris’ down payment assistance proposal?

Without providing much detail, Harris pledged down payment assistance.

“As the Harris-Walz plan starts to expand the supply of entry-level homes, they will, during their first term, provide working families who have paid their rent on time for two years and are buying their first home up to $25,000 in down payment assistance, with more generous support for first-generation homeowners,” the campaign said in an Aug. 16 press release.

Harris also mentioned the proposal — with less detail about who might qualify — at the aforementioned campaign rally, Aug 16 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“We also know that as the cost of housing has gone up, the size of down payments have gone up as well,” she said. “Even if aspiring homeowners save for years, it often still is not enough. So, in addition, while we work on the housing shortage, my administration will provide first-time homebuyers with $25,000 to help with the down payment on a new home.”

Harris did not provide many details on who would qualify, and it’s unclear what the proposed “assistance” would entail. Several news reports described it as “assistance,” The Washington Post described it as “a $25,000 credit.” The Harris campaign did not address our questions seeking more detail.

In practice, what might Harris’ plan look like?

Harris’ plan builds on a similar March Biden proposal. Biden called on Congress to provide as much as $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers whose parents did not own homes. That plan is mentioned in the 2024 Democratic Party Platform, which Democrats formally adopted Aug. 19 at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Under Harris’ plan, people whose parents owned homes would also qualify for assistance.

In March, Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., and six Democratic co-sponsors, introduced legislation that would provide up to $20,000 federal grants to help first-generation homebuyers with certain home purchase expenses, including their down payment and closing costs. Under the bill, a person would have qualified for grant assistance if he or she were a first-time and first-generation homebuyer whose income wasn’t more than 120% of the area’s median income (or 140% of the median income if the home being purchased was located in a high-cost area).

Beyond that, the law’s implementation would depend on the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the state-level agencies administering the funding, a Warnock spokesperson said.

That bill was referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs on March 12, where it awaits further action. The Harris campaign did not say whether Warnock’s legislation aligned with her plan.

Why did Vance claim an immigrant in the country illegally could qualify?

The Vance campaign said that migrants who entered the U.S. illegally under the Biden-Harris administration could, over time, qualify for Harris’ down payment assistance proposal.

For example, the Vance campaign told us that migrants awaiting a decision on their asylum claim — which could take years given the immigration court backlog — can be issued work permits and Social Security numbers.

The Social Security Administration says that typically “only noncitizens authorized to work in the United States by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can get an SSN.”

A 2023 Congressional Research Service report found that “unauthorized noncitizens” — meaning foreign nationals who entered the U.S. “without inspection,” “with fraudulent documents” or who entered legally but overstayed “the terms of their temporary stay” — are not eligible for employment authorization or a work authorized Social Security number.

The Social Security Administration can issue Social Security numbers that are “not valid for employment” to some noncitizens who are not authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to work in the U.S. if a federal law requires the noncitizen have a Social Security number to receive a benefit or service.

Most immigrants living illegally in the U.S. are not eligible for benefits from federal programs, because the programs require Social Security numbers. Immigrants in the U.S. illegally are typically ineligible for federal Department of Housing and Urban Development housing programs.

    Our ruling

Vance said “Harris wants to give $25,000 to illegal aliens to buy American homes.”

The GOP vice presidential nominee is filling in blanks about a proposal that we know little about.

Harris has pledged to provide “working families who have paid their rent on time for two years” who are first-time homebuyers with $25,000 in down payment assistance. She has not detailed what the policy would entail or who would qualify.

The Vance campaign argued that migrants could get Social Security numbers that might qualify them for down payment assistance. Social Security numbers are typically given only to noncitizens who are authorized to work in the U.S.

At PolitiFact, the burden of proof is on the speaker. Having seen no specific details from Vance’s team that demonstrate Harris’ proposal would benefit immigrants in the country illegally, we rate his claim False.
