  • Woman sentenced for killing, dismembering man because she allegedly believed he was a sex offender

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (TCN) — A woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for killing a man whose dismembered remains were found in a bag months after her initial arrest.

According to Colorado’s Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, a jury convicted Deka Simmons on Aug. 21 of the first-degree murder of Daxcimo Ceja, as well as tampering with physical evidence, tampering with a deceased human body, and sentencing enhancers of violent crime with a weapon and violent crime causing death. She subsequently received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In a press release, Colorado Springs Police said the investigation into Ceja’s homicide began on March 30, 2022. Police arrested Deka Simmons in April 2022 on suspicion of the victim’s death even though they had not located his remains.

Nearly half a year later, on Oct. 5, 2023, police responded to an anonymous report of possible human remains inside a bag in a drainage culvert. Authorities collected the remains and submitted them for an autopsy, and several days later, the coroner positively identified the victim as Ceja.

According to the Denver Gazette, prosecutors said during the trial that Simmons fatally shot Ceja in a garage because she believed he was a sex offender and allegedly had a relationship with a 17-year-old girl when he was 25. Prosecutors alleged that Simmons worried her daughter was a victim of sex trafficking, and she “has an unrestrained hatred for anyone who would molest a child.” Prosecutor Sharon Flaherty reportedly described it as a “fixation” and “paranoia” Simmons had.

  • Judicial Watch: Federal Court Speeds Appeal over Challenges to State’s Counting of Ballots that Arrive after Election Day

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has ordered a hearing regarding a lower court ruling on Mississippi’s election law that permits absentee ballots to be received as late as five business days after Election Day. The Fifth Circuit will hear the case on Tuesday, September 24, at 3 p.m. CT, 2 p.m. ET.

Judicial Watch filed the civil rights lawsuit challenging the Mississippi election law on behalf of the Libertarian Party of Mississippi (Libertarian Party of Mississippi v Wetzel et al. (No. 1:24-cv-00037)). The court consolidated the case filed by Judicial Watch with one filed by the Republican National Committee, the Mississippi Republican Party, and other complainants.

    Judicial Watch’s lawsuit argues:

Under federal law, the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of every even-numbered year is election day (“Election Day”) for federal elections.

Congress recently reaffirmed a single national Election Day when it enacted the Electoral Count Reform Act (“ECRA”).

Under the recent Congressional amendments, no extension of Election Day shall be allowed unless there are “force majeure events that are extraordinary and catastrophic” that justify extension.

Despite Congress’ unambiguous and longstanding statement regarding a single and uniform national Election Day, Mississippi extended Election Day by allowing five additional business days after Election Day for receipt of absentee ballots.

No “force majeure events that are extraordinary and catastrophic” currently exist in Mississippi to justify extending the ballot receipt deadline for the November 5, 2024, federal election for Presidential and Vice-Presential Electors.

Judicial Watch argued that holding voting open for five days past Election Day violates the constitutional rights of voters and candidates:

Counting untimely, illegal, and invalid votes, such as those received in violation of federal law, substantially increases the pool of total votes cast and dilutes the weight of votes cast by Plaintiff’s members and others in support of Plaintiff’s federal nominees.

The complaint points out that, based on the reported numbers, as many as 1.7% of votes cast in Mississippi in 2020 were received after Election Day.

In its appeal filings, Judicial Watch explains that the Mississippi law extending Election Day is obviously at odds with federal law.

“Extending the counting of ballots five days after the Election Day established by Congress runs counter to federal law and invites fraud – and undermines voter confidence,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “We’re pleased that the court will quickly hear our appeal for lawful election procedures.”

Judicial Watch is a national leader in voting integrity and voting rights. As part of its work, Judicial Watch assembled a team of highly experienced voting rights attorneys who stopped discriminatory elections in Hawaii, and cleaned up voter rolls in California, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, among other achievements.

Robert Popper, a Judicial Watch senior attorney, leads its election law program. Popper was previously in the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, where he managed voting rights investigations, litigations, consent decrees, and settlements in dozens of states.

In a similar lawsuit, in 2022, Judicial Watch, on behalf of Congressman Mike Bost and two other registered voters, sued Illinois for allowing vote-by-mail ballots (even those without postmarks) to be counted if received up to 14 calendar days after Election Day if the ballots are dated on or before Election Day.

In July 2024, Judicial Watch sent a notice letter to the Oregon secretary of state on behalf of itself, the Constitution Party of Oregon and an Oregon registered voter, notifying them of evident violations of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993, based on their failure to remove inactive voters from their registration rolls. The notice letter to Oregon serves as a “pre-suit” notice. The letter points out that “According to your state’s responses to the EAC’s [federal government’s Election Assistance Commission] survey, 19 Oregon counties reported removing zero voter registrations from November 2020 to November 2022 pursuant to Section 8(d)(1)(B) of the NVRA for failing to respond to a Confirmation Notice and failing to vote in two consecutive general federal elections. Another 10 counties reported just a handful of such removals during the same two-year period.”

In May 2024, Judicial Watch sued California to clean up its voter rolls. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Judicial Watch and the Libertarian Party of California, asks the court to compel California to make “a reasonable effort to remove the registrations of ineligible registrants from the voter rolls” as required by federal law (Judicial Watch Inc. and the Libertarian Party of CA v. Shirley Weber et al. (No. 2:24-cv-3750)).

In December 2023, notice letters were sent to election officials in the District of Columbia, California, and Illinois, notifying them of evident violations of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993, based on their failure to remove inactive voters from their registration rolls. The letters point out that these jurisdictions publicly reported removing few or no ineligible voter registrations under a key provision of the NVRA. The letters threatened federal lawsuits unless the violations were corrected in a timely fashion. In response to Judicial Watch’s inquiries, Washington, DC, officials admitted that they had not complied with the NVRA, promptly removed 65,544 outdated names from the voting rolls, promised to remove 37,962 more, and designated another 73,522 registrations as “inactive.” NVRA lawsuits subsequently were commenced against California and Illinois.

In July 2023 Judicial Watch filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief, supporting the decision of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, which struck down Maine’s policy restricting the use and distribution of the state’s voter registration list (Public Interest Legal Foundation v. Shenna Bellows (No. 23-1361). According to a national study conducted by Judicial Watch in 2020, Maine’s statewide registration rate was 101% of eligible voters.

Judicial Watch in July 2023 also settled a federal election integrity lawsuit on behalf of the Illinois Conservative Union against the state of Illinois, the Illinois State Board of Elections, and its director, which now grants access to the current centralized statewide list of registered voters for the state for the past 15 elections.

In April 2023, Pennsylvania settled with Judicial Watch and admitted in court filings that it removed 178,258 ineligible registrations in response to communications from Judicial Watch. The settlement commits Pennsylvania and five of its counties to extensive public reporting of statistics regarding their ongoing voter roll clean-up efforts for the next five years.

In March 2023, Colorado agreed to settle a Judicial Watch NVRA lawsuit alleging that Colorado failed to remove ineligible voters from its rolls. The settlement agreement requires Colorado to provide Judicial Watch with the most recent voter roll data for each Colorado county each year for six years.

In February 2023, Los Angeles County confirmed the removal of 1,207,613 ineligible voters from its rolls since last year, under the terms of a settlement agreement in a federal lawsuit Judicial Watch filed in 2017.

Judicial Watch settled a federal election integrity lawsuit against New York City after the city removed 441,083 ineligible names from the voter rolls and promised to take reasonable steps going forward to clean its voter registration lists.

Kentucky also removed hundreds of thousands of old registrations after it entered into a consent decree to end another Judicial Watch lawsuit.

In February 2022, Judicial Watch settled a voter roll clean-up lawsuit against North Carolina and two of its counties after North Carolina removed over 430,000 inactive registrations from its voter rolls.

In March 2022, a Maryland court ruled in favor of Judicial Watch’s challenge to the Democratic state legislature’s “extreme” congressional-districts gerrymander.

  • Fact Check: No, this video doesn’t show former President Donald Trump confusing Pennsylvania for North Carolina

Former President Donald Trump spent months painting President Joe Biden as incompetent, incapable and confused.

Now some social media users are casting Trump as “senile,” pointing to a recent video clip of Trump giving a speech in Pennsylvania as evidence.

“Trump was giving another one of his incoherent rambling rally speeches in Pennsylvania and THOUGHT HE WAS IN NORTH CAROLINA,” an Aug. 17 Threads post said.

“Trump doesn’t know what state he’s in,” another said. “He just asked the crowd at his Pennsylvania rally, ‘ … would that be okay, North Carolina?’ Trump is the oldest candidate for president.”

“BREAKING,” an Aug. 18 Instagram post said. “In a horribly embarrassing moment for Donald Trump, he forgets what state he is in. Trump suggests he is in North Carolina while he is in Pennsylvania. Retweet to make sure all Americans see this and know Donald Trump is senile.”

Many such posts feature a video clip of Trump saying: “A little bit longer. How would you like it? A guy’s waiting with his family for three and a half, four days. They have a tent and the tent is set up. They have hundreds of them and they wait. And then I walk in, speak for 15 minutes, and leave. I don’t know, somehow — would that be OK, North Carolina? I don’t think so, right? They want me to speak all day.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

Trump held a campaign rally Aug. 17 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

He mentioned Pennsylvania by name about two dozen times throughout his speech and opened his remarks with “a very big hello to Pennsylvania.”

He did say, “Would that be OK, North Carolina?” But in context, it’s clear that he was addressing a group in the audience from North Carolina — not mistaking where he was.

About 11-and-a-half minutes into his speech, after Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for being “anti-fracking and anti-drilling,” he addressed supporters who identify as “Front Row Joes” because they camp out to get into his rallies.

“We will bring back the American dream bigger,” Trump said. “We are going to bring it back. Bigger, better, Front Row Joe. Bigger, better and stronger than ever before. We’re going to bring it back. Look at all these Front Row Joes over here. They’ve only been, we have a couple of groups here. They’re at about 222 events. Front Row Joes, stand up, wave your hands. There — you guys are great. Patriots.”

Trump then said: “But I have another group from a place called North Carolina. Has anybody ever heard of North — we love North Carolina. The beautiful ladies over there. This is number, what — 217? So this is No. 217.”

He talked about the North Carolina supporters for about a minute before pivoting back to Harris.

About 15 minutes later, Trump countered accusations that he rambles during his speeches and said, “I go for sometimes two hours, two and a half hours, because people are waiting outside for three days, four days. You guys were waiting out there for a long time. Front Row Joes are waiting out — I don’t know how you guys do it. And I feel I have an obligation to speak, and speak in a certain way, and speak a little bit longer. How would you like it? A guy’s waiting with his family for three and a half, four days. They have a tent, and the tent is set up. They have hundreds of them and they wait. And then I walk in, speak for 15 minutes, and leave. I don’t know, somehow, would that be OK, North Carolina? I don’t think so, right?”

After a Harris campaign spokesperson posted on X that “Trump just said he was in North Carolina” when he was in Pennsylvania, Trump’s campaign responded: “Wrong again, moron. President Trump was obviously referring to the Front Row Joes from North Carolina in the audience, whom he recognized earlier in his speech.”

We rate claims Trump thought he was in North Carolina when he was in Pennsylvania False.

  • Helping Professionals Start a New Career as an Author – The US Times

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn D. Owens.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

I am a Publisher, Author, and Author Coach. I assist professionals who are struggling with time management, accountability, fear, establishing themselves as an SME in their field, or lack of knowledge of the book writing process, to start a new career as an author.

In 2003, I stepped out on faith and left my comfortable corporate communications job with a fortune 500 company. This exit led to a seven-year lesson on learning to walk in faith, identifying and listening to the voice of God, and trusting His direction and timing. I also learned to further develop and use my gift of discernment by helping professionals make spiritual decisions related to their career choices.

Eventually, I started my first company, The Corporate Couch, to offer career coaching services to professionals. Subsequently, I wrote a book, “Light After a Layoff”, to provide spiritual tools to professionals in career transition. The success of the book led to an expansion of my career coaching business and launched my speaking career. It also caused people to begin asking me HOW to write a book, so I began offering author coaching services in 2017.

In 2020, I officially opened The Owens Publishing Company where we now offer services to help professionals (coaches, counselors, doctors, salespeople, entrepreneurs, ministers, etc.) start a “new career” as an author.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

The Owens Publishing Company was established in June of 2020; near the beginning of the pandemic, and in the midst of civil unrest such as our country has never seen. So much was coming to light about what needed to be done individually and collectively to move our country forward and some hard truths had to be faced. This sobering revelation brought clarity and conflict to many when dealing with colleagues, business partners, service providers, and even family. It hit me especially hard in business, as some professional relationships proved irreparable in the face of injustice, and it was painful. At the same time, a new kind of confidence and determination was emerging in many marginalized people around the world. And it rose up fiercely in me!

The call was for us all to stand up and use our voices for the greater good. I came to the realization during that difficult time period, that my part was to establish The Owens Publishing Company, and help more people start a new career as an author. The “rainbow the cloud” for me, was the realization that I could use my voice to help others use theirs; and our efforts would last forever because books make authors immortal. No one can ever be erased from the history books if I can help write them.

I accepted my call, and established The Owens Publishing Company. It has grown steadily ever since, and will continue to help others build and leave a legacy.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

We help professionals start a new career as a non-fiction author. To be clear, clients do not have to be “writers” in order to become authors. We offer a clearly defined process to document their experiences, and also provide accountability, education. As a result of sharing their inspirational messages with the world, our clients enjoy new business opportunities, more money, becoming respected subject matter experts’ (SMEs) in their fields, and the pleasure of leaving a lasting legacy in written form.

What makes me different is that I am also a career coach (in addition to being an author coach, author and publisher). This skill allows me to uncover information in a unique way, while helping the client to map out next steps in their entrepreneurial journey. Mixing career and author coaching has proven to be a winning combination as I have the expertise and insight to support the client with any challenge they may face on various levels of their journey. I have also walked the same path, and I am still learning and growing so I can continue to serve at higher levels.

In addition, I have a spiritual gift of discernment which allows me to access a different level of wisdom to gently guide the client through areas that might be difficult to navigate on their own. I like to say that I can “sense” where they are being led and I “hold that space” for them until they can see, believe, and experience it for themselves.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

My best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success, is to place God first in all things and follow the guidance given. In my experience, this saves time and provides peace of mind.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

I find success in knowing that I am flowing in the purpose I was created to fulfill. The only way to know the real purpose of something is to consult with its manufacturer. It is in this way that I view my relationship with God. If I ask my creator for guidance concerning my life, I find success through following the guidance given. To me, this translates into peace of mind.

    What’s next for you?

The next steps for The Owens Publishing Company include expanding globally to create partnerships. Gaining education about publishing, marketing, and distribution channels in foreign markets to increase the reach and influence of our authors, is a high priority. We look forward to helping more professionals become authors and share their messages worldwide.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

  • Fla. woman pleads guilty to killing man she babysat and injured in 1984

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (TCN) — A 62-year-old woman was sentenced to three years in prison after she entered a plea deal for injuring a 5-month-old boy 40 years ago, causing him lifelong trauma that led to his death.

WTVJ-TV reports Terry McKirchy pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the 2019 death of Benjamin Dowling. McKirchy was charged in June 2021 with first-degree murder in the commission or attempted commission of aggravated child abuse. Prosecutors alleged McKirchy injured Dowling on July 3, 1984, which ultimately resulted in him dying on Sept. 16, 2019. She could have faced life in prison if she was convicted.

Court records show McKirchy was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery of a child on July 6, 1984, and she pleaded no contest to both charges a year later. A judge sentenced her to probation.

According to The Associated Press, McKirchy wrote an apology letter to Dowling’s family, which her attorney read in court. In it, she admitted to hitting Benjamin, who was 5 months old at the time, “in a state of impulse and anger.” As a result, he suffered a brain hemorrhage and required multiple surgeries throughout his life. He never walked, talked, or ate without assistance and was confined to a wheelchair.

McKirchy wrote, “Your life and Benjamin’s life were truly harmed by me and I am truly sorry.”

The Associated Press reports Dowling’s mother took him to the hospital on July 3, 1984, because he was limp. The doctor reportedly determined his brain hemorrhage occurred from someone severely shaking him. McKirchy was 22 years old when she babysat for Dowling.

WTVJ reports Dowling’s family wrote in a statement in 2021, “Benjamin would never know how much he was loved and could never tell others of his love for them. Benjamin did smile when he was around his family, although he could never verbalize anything, we believe he knew who we were and that we were working hard to help him.”

  • Exclusive Interview with Cassandra Ferguson of Elevation Global Media Group – The US Times

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Ferguson.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

Unfortunately a perfect family is just a dream.

At the age of 11 my mother moved to Baltimore for a new life after divorcing my father. At the age of 12 my father was arrested for bank robbery .

I remember those prison visits like yesterday. I can still feel the anxiety from the sound of the bars closing behind me, the guards checking my mother’s purse, and nervously going through the metal detector.

I was excited to see him but could not shake the jitters of visiting him in prison.

The impact of all this trauma was attached to me mentally. It had a strong hold on my mind, and I played what I thought was the end of my story over and over again.

There were three things I rehearsed in my mind:
#1 Because my father allegedly died by a drowning and/or drug overdose in his 40‘s, I too would die prematurely.
#2 My marriage would end early but just yesterday me and my husband ,Tony, celebrated 35 years of marriage.
#3 How do I hide my father’s past? I feared people would think I was a thief or associate me with a criminal, so I didn’t talk about it.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

I had to overcome inferiority and shame of someone else mistake.

Daddy issues was the main one.

I remember attending a Sunday service and Bishop Johnson was preaching on unforgiveness. He said, “even if the person is dead, you still need to forgive them”. At that moment I let out a loud scream, “I forgive you!” “I forgive you!” I felt the pain and feeling of shame leave me. This was the beginning of my healing journey.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I had various jobs including one at Burger King as a cashier and got promoted to Team Lead, cashier, a teller marketer, and then finally a job at the IRS as a Customer Service Representative. Getting a government job requires an intense background check. To be honest I thought I wasn’t going to get it after they saw my father’s background. I got the job. After a couple of weeks on the job I was pulled into an investigation room, I said to myself “Here we go, they are going to ask me about my father.” They never once mentioned my father and I left out that room thanking God and praising him for victory.

From the IRS I went to work at the Social Security Administration. After 8-9 years, I resigned and pursued my dream of owning my own mortgage/tax business. I did that for about 8 years until the housing market crashed in 2007 and I had to shut the doors.

I began another career search and I landed jobs with major banks. I helped save consumer homes from going to foreclosure and monitored employee’s investment accounts.

From the bank to a Financial Counselor for Johns Hopkins Hospital, to a Radio Host/Author, to Program Manager for a non- profit where I continue to teach financial literacy to the youth in Baltimore. Now I sit at conference tables with Bank VPs.

After God continued to show me his grace over my life, I still felt unworthy, ashamed and scared.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Never give up on your dream!

One of my favorite poems I want to share with you:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. -Marianne Williamson

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success is intertwine with purpose. As long as you are living and working out your God given purpose you will be successful.

    What’s next for you?

What’s next for me is up to God. One thing for sure is I will listen for God’s voice and follow the direction and path He has laid out for me. I will die empty because I would have used all the gifts God gave me.

  • Fact Check: American flag wasn’t missing at the DNC

The Democratic National Convention opened Aug. 19 in the Windy City, and some social media users commented on the event’s lack of patriotic symbols.

“JUST IN: Missing from the DNC in Chicago…” conservative commentator Matt Couch wrote on X. “The American Flag…”

The post, one of several making the claim, received a community note, which lets users fact-check and add context to possibly misleading posts; the note contained a link to C-SPAN coverage of the event, which showed multiple flags onstage, including several American flags. An Associated Press photo shows that there were at least six flags placed in the corners of the convention stage.

Couch later made another post in the same thread, walking back his claim.

“I said I’ll own it and I will …” he wrote. “They have them, they’re off to the sides … but they are on stage.” He added, “I stand corrected, I didn’t see any from the clips or parts I watched on TV.”

PolitiFact rated False a similar claim that American flags were missing from a 2019 Democratic debate.

Former President Donald Trump also said there were no American flags at the last in-person DNC in 2016. We rated that claim Half True because physical flags weren’t present for all of  the convention’s first night, although a video board displayed a virtual flag and a physical flag was raised during the national anthem.

We rate multiple X posts claiming that the American flag is missing from the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago False.
