  • FDA Shift Away From Animal Testing Sends Lab Shares Into Freefall

FDA Shift Away From Animal Testing Sends Lab Shares Into Freefall

Traditional animal testing replaced with advanced computer modeling and artificial intelligence

(ZH) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a major policy shift late Thursday, signaling the replacement of traditional animal testing—particularly in monoclonal antibody development—with advanced computer modeling and artificial intelligence. The news sent shares of lab companies tumbling on the update, while shares in companies working on biotech AI models jumped.

“Today, the FDA is taking a groundbreaking step to advance public health by replacing animal testing in the development of monoclonal antibody therapies and other drugs with more effective, human-relevant methods,” the FDA wrote on X, twenty minutes before U.S. cash markets closed on Thursday.

Here’s a summary of the FDA’s major shift in drug testing policy

    • AI-based computer modeling to simulate drug behavior and toxicity.
    • Lab-grown human organoids and organ-on-a-chip systems to detect toxic effects more accurately than animal tests.
    • Use of real-world safety data from countries with comparable regulatory standards.
    • Regulatory incentives to encourage adoption of these alternatives, including potential streamlined reviews.
    • Immediate application to new drug applications (INDs), with a roadmap released and a public workshop planned.

With this move, the FDA reaffirms its role as a global leader in modern regulatory science, setting new standards for the industry and encouraging the adoption of innovative, humane testing methods,” the FDA stated in a press release.

Here’s the response from Wall Street analysts (courtesy of Bloomberg):

    Baird analyst Eric Coldwell

    • says “expect very slow change to the research animal and animal testing services market”
    • “Street got shock and awe news today, and players in this industry likely won’t fully recover when it comes to valuation,” Coldwell writes in a note

    Jefferies analyst David Windley

    • says FDA’s Modernization 2.0 already stared phasing out animal testing, “but perhaps this is a stronger push with more prescribed plan”
    • “At the least with preclinical spending deprioritized, this is just another reason to pause.”

    Barclays analyst Luke Sergott

    • says while taking out preclinical animal testing testing is “a good goal” — “questions on feasibility and implementation remain”
    • Charles River in the cross-hairs, however “this paradigm shift has downstream impacts to late-stage trials”

RBC Capital Markets analyst Brian Abrahams

    • says “these steps towards increased regulatory flexibility as net positive, especially given recent concerns about potential FDA dysfunction and potentially greater stringency”
    • Antibody innovators Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Amgen, Viridian, BeiGene, Xencor and Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical would likely stand to benefit the most

The immediate consequence of the significant testing policy shift sent shares of Charles River, the leading provider of research animal models, plunging by a one-day record of 28%, reaching their lowest level since March 2020 by Thursday’s close.

Peers also fell: LabCorp closed 5.2% lower, and Inotiv crashed 50%. Meanwhile, companies working on AI models surged in premarket trading, with Certara up 20%, Schrodinger up 15%, and Nuvation Bio up 3%.

  • Man indicted for allegedly killing woman in fake car deal plot

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (TCN) — A 38-year-old man has been indicted in the death of a 23-year-old woman whose body was found “slumped” in her father’s vehicle nearly 16 years ago.

According to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, Charline Rosemond was last seen alive on April 7, 2009. In a press conference, District Attorney Marian Ryan said Rosemond had left her workplace but failed to return home, and her family reported her missing.

Almost a week later, on April 13, 2009, her body was discovered in a parking lot in Union Square with a gunshot wound to the head. Rosemond was allegedly living with her family and working at a car dealership at the time of her death.

According to Ryan, the investigation revealed that Rosemond was negotiating a car deal with Roberto Jeune, someone she believed to be “one of her closest friends.” Rosemond allegedly withdrew $4,100, as she was told she’d have to pay for the car in cash. Heinsky Anacreon reportedly pretended to be part of the deal. He and Jeune allegedly coerced Rosemond into bringing the money to a remote parking lot, where she was fatally shot.

Anacreon and Jeune initially denied having any involvement in the victim’s death. However, Ryan said investigators found latex gloves and two cases used to store firearms at Jeune’s home. They also reportedly discovered an empty bottle of champagne, which the district attorney said the suspects drank in celebration following the shooting.

Further investigation revealed Anacreon allegedly worked at a used car dealership and had driven the exact type of car Rosemond was seeking to buy. He reportedly told his employer he was showing it to someone who wanted to purchase it.

According to Ryan, investigators located Jeune’s suspected DNA in the car where Rosemond was found. Prosecutors also said Anacreon told a close friend that he had provided the weapon used to kill Rosemond and that he threw it into a body of water. The gun has never been recovered. Jeune died of natural causes in Philadelphia on July 8, 2024.

Prosecutors also allege that on May 21, 2024, Anacreon tried to obstruct justice, claiming in an interview that he had no knowledge of or involvement in Jeune’s plot. However, the district attorney’s office said, “Evidence developed during the course of the investigation convincingly demonstrated that Anacreon’s denials of participation were knowingly and willfully false.”

On April 10, Ryan announced that Anacreon was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, attempt to willfully mislead a police officer, and attempt to willfully mislead an attorney. His arraignment has not yet been scheduled.

  • Most Americans Now Have Negative View Of Israel — Support Craters

Most Americans Now Have Negative View Of Israel — Support Craters

Beyond the war per se, the exposure of that war’s horrors on social media platforms has also been decisive

(Tyler Durden Reports) – While the Trump administration earnestly redistributes billions of dollars of American wealth to Israel, that country’s immensely-destructive war in Gaza appears to be taking a growing toll on its support among Americans. According to the latest Pew Research survey, a majority of Americans now have an unfavorable view of Israel. In a finding that will cause the greatest alarm in Israeli government offices and at US-based pro-Israel organizations, there’s now a huge generational divide within the GOP ranks.

53% of Americans now have an unfavorable view of Israel, thanks to the share of Americans with dim views of Israel surging by 11 points in three years. The comparison point is Pew’s survey in March 2022, seven months before the Oct 7 Hamas invasion of southern Israel sparked a massive military response that’s killed more than 50,000 Palestinians — about a third of them under 18 — according to health officials in Gaza. Over the same span, the proportion of Americans with “very unfavorable” views of Israel has almost doubled from 10% to 19%.

    Source: Pew Research

Extending back several years, support for Israel had started to sharply polarize along major-party lines, with Democrats’ affinity for Israel plummeting while GOP support held relatively steady. In the Pew survey‘s most striking statistic of all, disdain for the State of Israel among Republicans under age 50 has soared 15 points in three years, which could signal that support for Israel is poised for a bipartisan decline for years to come. Among Republicans and Republican leaners age 50 and older, unfavorable views of Israel crept up just four points since 2022, from 19% to 23%. Among the under-50 GOP set, it rose from 35% to 50%.

Democrats’ low views of Israel also surged higher over the three-year interval: 69% have an unfavorable view in 2025, up 16 points from 2022. On that side of party divide, age is much less of a factor: 66% of age-50+ Dems have a negative view of Israel, compared to 71% for those 18 to 49.

Pew also found interesting distinctions among views held by Americans as divided by religious affiliations. One of the key pillars of Israeli political influence inside the United States is white evangelical protestants, and 72% of them accordingly view Israel favorably today. Non-evangelical protestants are net-negative on Israel by a small 50% to 47% margin, while Catholics take a dim view of Israel by a more substantial 53% to 43% spread. 73% of Jews are favorable, but a quite-substantial 27% give a thumbs-down to the self-declared “Jewish state.”

    Source: Pew Research

Pew’s survey didn’t probe the factors driving rising negative views of Israel, but it’s safe to say the major shift springs from Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza. Beyond the war per se, the exposure of that war’s horrors on social media platforms has also been decisive in our view, with Americans having access to raw portrayals of the bloodshed and suffering, including reporting from alternative and foreign media outlets that shines a light on the high civilian death toll, destruction of hospitals, mass-displacement from homes, hunger and disease.

Ironically, many of the most damning social-media glimpses into the Israeli Defense Forces’ conduct of the war have come from IDF soldiers themselves, who’ve shared photos and videos of themselves gleefully destroying entire neighborhoods in Gaza, maliciously smashing shops, destroying personal property, and weirdly dressing up in women’s underwear left behind in the homes of fleeing Palestinians.

That’s not to say mainstream media hasn’t also played a role in Israel’s surging unpopularity in the United States. One of the most unsettling reports of the war was aired by CBS Sunday Morning, which featured the accounts of American doctors who’d volunteered in Gaza and were stunned by the number of children with headshot and other disturbing wounds.

As for younger Republicans, whether or not they have empathy for Palestinian civilians, many under-50 GOP voters no doubt see America’s open-checkbook support for Israel as inconsistent with the “America First” philosophy that’s supposed to underpin Trumpian Republicanism. In a move last month that surely aggravated them, fresh after amusingly humiliating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky en route to ending the money-pit that is the proxy war against Russia, the Trump administration turned around and used emergency authorities to ship off another $4 billion in military aid to Israel.

As today’s under-50 crowd proceeds to dominates the Republican electorate, those moves could start to become a political liability for GOP officials who’ve been conditioned to expect Red-Team praise for sending US wealth, weapons and soldiers to the Middle East to advance Israel’s agenda.

If rank-and-file Republicans increasingly embrace George Washington’s advice to avoid “passionate attachments” that make the United States “a slave to its fondness,” a seismic shift in the 77-year US-Israel relationship could be in the offing.

  • Wife found guilty in plot to fatally stab hairdresser husband Fabio Sementilli for financial gain

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. (TCN) — The wife of prominent hairdresser Fabio Sementilli has been convicted in the 2017 plot to kill him in the home they shared with their daughters.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced April 11 that a jury found Monica Sementilli guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit murder and murder with special circumstance allegations that the killing was carried out for financial gain and by means of lying in wait. She is scheduled to be sentenced on June 23 and faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Prosecutors said Monica Sementilli and her co-defendant, Robert Baker, were “involved in a romantic affair and conspired to kill 49-year-old Fabio Sementilli.”

On Jan. 23, 2017, Fabio Sementilli was sitting on the patio when Baker fatally stabbed him and fled the scene in the victim’s Porsche. The vehicle was reportedly found abandoned just miles away.

According to KABC-TV, investigators originally believed it was a home invasion gone wrong, but they later named Monica Sementilli and Baker the primary suspects. Baker is reportedly a convicted sex offender and former porn star.

Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman argued that the victim’s wife plotted Fabio Sementilli’s death so she could inherit his estate and continue her relationship with Baker, KABC reports. Silverman also allegedly said Baker and Monica Sementilli destroyed evidence to hide their plan.

Baker previously pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

KTTV-TV reports that a third suspect, Christopher Austin, helped Baker in the stabbing. He pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and faces 16 years to life in prison.

Energy Secretary Hints At Military Action Against Iran’s Global Oil Exports

The US has already long monitored and condemned Iran’s ‘shadow fleet’ activity and efforts to disguise Iranian oil shipments.

(ZH) – Amid Trump’s anti-Iran ‘maximum pressure’ and the current climate of the White House telling Tehran to negotiate a new nuclear deal or else bombs could fly, fresh statements from US Energy Secretary Chris Wright just added fuel to the fire.

Wright while on a trip to Abu Dhabi told Reuters that the United States is able to step up pressure on Iran and stop its oil exports altogether with force if need be, in order to get Tehran to the table on its nuclear program.

US Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright, via SourceNM

He described provocatively that the US “can follow the ships from Iran” as “we know where they go” and thus the Islamic Republic’s export of oil can be fully stopped.

Crucially he added that in his view the market can “tolerate squeezing out” of Iran oil exports if this full-court press option is pursued.

This would necessarily involve US militarization of shipping lates and strategic oil chokepoints not only in the Middle East but in southeast Asia, while stepping up reconnaissance operations.

The US has already long monitored and condemned Iran’s ‘shadow fleet’ activity and efforts to disguise Iranian oil shipments. China has been the largest customer by far, especially since 2022 when Tehran in the face of expanding sanctions upped its exports with nearly 300 ‘dark fleet’ tankers also going to places like Venezuela, and sanctions-decimated Syria (under Iran-ally Assad at the time).

“The Iranian regime relies on its network of unscrupulous shippers and brokers like Brar and his companies to enable its oil sales and finance its destabilizing activities,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen said Thursday, in rolling out yet more counter-Iran actions to crackdown on its oil and petroleum products.

The new Treasury measures involve the following:

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has unveiled sanctions against a sophisticated maritime network responsible for smuggling hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Iranian petroleum, targeting UAE-based shipping magnate Jugwinder Singh Brar and his fleet of nearly 30 vessels, many of which operate as part of Iran’s “shadow fleet.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of State has simultaneously sanctioned a Chinese terminal operator, along with two additional vessels, that feeds product to a co-called “teapot” refinery.

Operating through UAE-based companies Prime Tankers LLC and Glory International FZ-LLC, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) alleges Brar’s network employed an intricate web of smaller Handysize tankers for coastal operations, conducting high-risk ship-to-ship (STS) transfers in waters off Iraq, Iran, the UAE, and the Gulf of Oman.

Oil prices dropped slightly Friday upon China announcing its retaliation against the US by raising tariffs on US goods to 125%. The ongoing US-China trade and tariff tit-for-tat has dented demand for oil amid a climate of fear and uncertainty, pushing prices down.

Commenting further on Wright’s Friday words, Reuters notes that he said “there will be a positive outlook for oil demand and supply in the next few years under President Donald Trump’s policies, and the concern of markets about economic growth will be proven wrong.”

Canada PM Carney Denies Knowing Chinese-Linked Group He Took Photos With

The JCCC published photos showing its leaders shaking hands with Carney as proof of their engagement with the prime minister.

    BREITBART

Leftist Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted with outrage on Thursday when confronted about why he had taken photos with the leaders of a Chinese influence operation in Toronto, claiming he did not know what the group was.

The Jiangsu Commerce Council of Canada (JCCC), an organization promoting greater Chinese influence in the Canadian economy, boasted in early April of engaging in an “in-depth” meeting with Carney and praised him as a “financial giant,” claiming that he “praised the pioneering role of the Chinese business” in green energy, e-commerce, and other sectors.

A reporter representing the Globe and Mail newspaper asked Carney about the meeting on Thursday, leading to Carney insisting, “I’ve never heard of this group… full stop.” The JCCC published photos showing its leaders shaking hands with Carney as proof of their engagement with the prime minister.

Carney insisted in response to the photos that he meets with “hundreds and thousands” of people, arguing that he cannot be held responsible for knowing who he meets with.

The JCCC scandal is the latest in a flurry of revelations showing that Carney has, throughout his career prior to becoming prime minister, built extensive relationships with various arms of the Chinese Communist Party. Carney had never held public office or run for any political position before being appointed prime minister of the country in March, the result of his widely unpopular predecessor Justin Trudeau resigning. He served as the president of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, advised Trudeau on his disastrous Wuhan coronavirus response, and most recently worked for Brookfield Asset Management, a finance firm.

As part of his work with Brookfield, Carney visited Beijing in October when Chinese state media claimed that he advocated for “further expanding its business in Beijing.” Brookfield also recently secured a sweetheart loan from a Chinese bank worth $276 million.

The JCCC controversy is based on a post that the advocacy group published on its website in early April that appears to have been deleted after the Globe and Mail unearthed it on Thursday. It is still visible on internet archives, however.

The Chinese-text post, titled, “A Financial Giant Is in Charge of the Maple Leaf Country,” claimed that the president of the JCCC, Xu Xiaoguang, and honorary president Jiang Rui held an “in-depth meeting” with Carney in which the prime minister said it was “necessary to actively expand trade relations with countries such as South America, the United Kingdom, and the Asia-Pacific region” to “expand international market opportunities outside the United States.”

Allegedly Carney “highly praised the pioneering role of the Chinese business community in emerging fields such as clean technology, digital trade, and financial technology.”

The report also repeatedly praised Carney, stating that he enjoyed “both international prestige and local affection” and expressing hope that he could advance Canada on “climate change response, Arctic channel development, and free trade.”

“I’ve never heard of this group, okay?” Carney snapped at reporters on Thursday. “Never heard of this group. Certainly didn’t have a set-up meeting with this group. Full stop.”

Carney disparaged the Globe and Mail, a left-leaning newspaper, and urged journalists to “check your sources before you write,” ignoring the fact that the source was an article published by the group featuring photos of Carney at the event he said never happened…
