  • Cultural Factors Drive ‘Disproportionate’ Crime Among Migrant Groups: Renowned Swiss Psychiatrist

Authored by Thomas Brooke via Remix News

Following the release of his new book, The Dark Sides of Migration, Swiss forensic psychiatrist Frank Urbaniok has called for European asylum policy to finally take migrant crime statistics into account, claiming that certain migrant groups are “disproportionately criminal” due to cultural factors.

Urbaniok, one of Switzerland’s most prominent forensic experts with over three decades of experience analyzing violent offenders, suggests that cultural influences from countries such as Afghanistan, Morocco, and Tunisia contribute significantly to higher crime rates among migrants from these regions.

“Afghans are reported more than five times, Moroccans more than eight times, and Tunisians more than nine times more often than Swiss nationals for serious violent crimes,” Urbaniok stated in an interview with Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, citing his analysis of crime data from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The disproportionate crime rate has a lot to do with cultural influences. It is about how violence is dealt with, the image of women, or the role of the rule of law in these countries. I have been dealing with criminals for 33 years and have seen thousands of cases at close range. That’s why I know how strong and relevant these imprints can be. Sometimes, they persist for generations,” he said.

The cover of his book has drawn some criticism for prominently featuring a knife, which he insists is a “good symbol” as it “reflects the growing sense of insecurity in public spaces.”

While careful to clarify that he does not condemn all migrants — he explains why he preceded “Migration” in his book title with “The Dark Side of” — Urbaniok makes no secret of his belief that the cultural background of asylum seekers should influence immigration decisions. “There are countries that are unproblematic, those that are problematic, and those that are highly problematic… and I don’t understand why that doesn’t play a role in the question of who we let into the country.”

Urbaniok proposes an explicit quota system that would limit asylum admissions from countries with high crime rates. In his view, the absolute right to asylum is unrealistic and harmful to public safety: “Hundreds of millions of people would theoretically be entitled to seek asylum in Switzerland, but we could never take them all in.”

The renowned psychiatrist rejected accusations of exaggeration in his book, countering that much of the public discourse on foreigner crime amounts to “targeted disinformation” designed to downplay uncomfortable truths. “Many fear that citizens will not be able to deal with the facts,” he said.

In several European nations, foreign crime data is obscured by the fact that naturalized citizens in their respective countries are categorized as, for example, “German” or “Austrian,” even if they are foreign-born or of a historic migration background.

“Too many problematic people remain here,” Urbaniok said.

“I see them in the statistics and every day in my profession for thirty years. That’s unpleasant. What is really unpleasant is the realization that these problems can still exist a generation later. That’s why you can’t say that we have the matter under control. On the contrary, the problems are huge.”

Urbaniok has appeared at events hosted by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), a party known for its hardline stance on immigration. While acknowledging that the SVP identifies the scale of the issue, Urbaniok criticized the party for what he considers to be a too simplistic solution. “It is a sign of their perplexity when they believe that all you have to do is control the borders and everything will be fine.”

He also spoke of the firewall against the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which he believes prevents the party from becoming more moderate and mainstream and enables radicals with pro-Russia and unpalatable, overtly xenophobic views to ride its coattails.

“The AfD does not distance itself enough from right-wing radical and xenophobic forces. It represents positions, for example vis-à-vis Russia, that I consider unacceptable. I don’t like their agitational language, but I think it is wrong to try to contain a party that has over 20 percent of the vote with firewalls. This only promotes the radical forces in this party,” he told the Swiss newspaper.

Despite the backlash against the issues raised in his book, Urbaniok remains defiant and optimistic about its release later this month.

“The publishers were afraid for their image,” he said, revealing that several publishers declined to publish his book. “They try to have an educational effect on the population, and I think that is wrong and harmful to our democracy.”

  • Man sentenced for killing co-worker because he believed he had been intimate with his girlfriend

OREGON CITY, Ore. (TCN) — A man and his girlfriend, both 27, will spend time behind bars for killing a 25-year-old man in what prosecutors said was “an act fueled by jealousy.”

In a news release posted April 14, the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office said Cody Denewith pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault with a firearm in connection with the death of Nathan Anderson, his former co-worker. He was subsequently sentenced to 240 months in prison for manslaughter and 90 months for assault. He will serve 27 1/2 years, but prosecutors said a “provision allows him to earn credit that could slightly reduce his term.”

Denewith’s girlfriend, Dominique Britt, previously pleaded guilty in December to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon, and she received a sentence of 150 months in prison.

According to the district attorney’s office, on April 29, 2024, Denewith shot Anderson in the abdomen three times. Anderson was transported to a hospital and pronounced deceased upon his arrival.

Denewith reportedly believed Anderson, whom he had worked with at Dave’s Killer Bread, had been “sexually intimate” with Britt.

Days before the fatal shooting, police responded to Britt and Denewith’s apartment for a domestic call and arrested Denewith. While Denewith was in jail, Britt allegedly claimed Anderson had sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors said Denewith became “consumed by the belief that it had happened” and “fixated” on killing the victim.

On the day of the fatal shooting, Denewith reportedly sent his girlfriend a text message asking her to “pack him clothing and his ‘toy’ from upstairs,” which was their code work for a Sig Sauer P365 handgun. According to the district attorney’s office, Britt told later officials she did as her boyfriend asked and gave him the gun knowing Denewith planned to shoot and kill Anderson.

Denewith and Britt were initially charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors noted that Denewith was previously convicted in 2022 of felon in possession of a firearm out of Clatsop County and convicted of burglary in Oklahoma in 2016.

Bulldogs end regular season with extra-inning win over Flomaton, 4-3

    Published 3:05 pm Tuesday, April 15, 2025

After falling at home to Charles Henderson on Friday, the Andalusia Bulldogs rebounded to end the regular season on a high note with a 4-3 extra-inning win over Flomaton Monday.

As the 5A Area 3 champions, the Bulldogs will host Faith Acacemy Friday to begin the playoffs.

    Andalusia 4

    Florala 3

Flomaton and Andalusia battled throughout the game with the score tied until the ninth inning. A wild pitch that allowed Connor Ray to score in the top of the seventh broke the tie and a double-play in the bottom of the inning secured the Bulldog victory.

Andalusia struck first in the top of the second. Landen Butler led off the inning with a walk and a single by Kielan Davis put two on for the Bulldogs. A one-out double off the bat of Sawyer Hardy brought both runners home for a 2-0 lead. Hardy scored later on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0.

Flomaton got on the board in the bottom of the third with some clutch hitting. With two outs, Harper Harrison hit a double to centerfield and scored on a single by Ross Bell. Another double, this one by Michael Wedgeworth, scored Bell to cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2.

Flomaton tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Braden Nall.

While Andalusia threatened in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded, the score remained tied to send the game into extra innings.

The Bulldogs opened the ninth inning with a single by Connor Ray and he moved to second on a sacrfice by Hardy. A grounder by Mason Sheridan moved Ray to third with two outs. A wild pitch led to Connor scoring what would prove to be the winning run.

Davis and Ray each ended the game with two hits and two runs scored. Hardy hit a double for two RBI.

The Bulldogs used three pitchers in the game. Asher Bently got the start, going four innings, surrendering seven hits with two strikeouts. Charlie Walsh pitched two innings with two strikeouts and Davis pitched the final three innings, recording one strikeout.

    Andalusia 1

    Charles Henderson 3

Charles Henderson jumped out to a quick lead after a lead-off walk followed by a fielding error and a single led to the first run coming across the plate. Andalusia escaped the inning with no more damage done with a double play initiated by second baseman Asher Bentley and turned at second base by shortstop Riley Cravey.

After a quiet second inning, the Trojans made the score 2-0 with two doubles in the third.

The Bulldogs and pitcher Landen Butler held Charles Henderson at two runs over the next three innings. Andalusia managed to push a run across in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game, 2-1. Butler led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Kielan Davis drew a walk and Connor Ray reached by being hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Bulldogs with two outs. Neilex Ferrell, who came in as pinch runner for Butler, tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mason Sheridan. A fielder’s choice ended the Bulldogs’ chance to tie the game.

Charles Henderson scored another run in the top of the sixth with two walks and a single, increasing their lead back to two runs, 3-1.

The Bulldogs managed to work the bases full in the bottom of the sixth, but could not push a run home. In the seventh, Ray led off with a single, but a double play followed by another groundball ended the hope for a late comeback.

Ray, Row Thorn and Grover Wells each had one single for the Bulldogs. Sheridan’s sacrifice fly was the only RBI of the game. Butler and Davis each recorded two walks.

Butler pitched five innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Charlie Walsh pitched the final two innings, allowing three hits and no runs.

  • Man who was allegedly held captive by stepmom for 20 years begins 'process of reclaiming my life'

WATERBURY, Conn. (TCN) – A 32-year-old man who was allegedly held captive by his stepmother for two decades and subjected to malnutrition and “inhumane treatment” has reportedly released a statement.

According to WVIT-TV, the victim, who is referring to himself only as “S,” said, “I am speaking out today to begin the process of reclaiming my life and to have my say in how my story is told.”

Waterbury Police first responded to the scene on the evening of Feb. 17 to a report of an active fire. The Waterbury Fire Department extinguished the flames. There were reportedly two occupants inside the home, 56-year-old Kimberly Sullivan and her adult stepson, who suffered smoke inhalation and exposure to the fire.

According to police, the victim intentionally set his upstairs room ablaze and told officials, “I wanted my freedom” after he had allegedly been held captive by Sullivan since he was around 11 years old.

Detectives reportedly determined the victim had endured “prolonged abuse, starvation, severe neglect, and inhumane treatment.” He was reportedly in a “severely emaciated condition” and had “not received medical or dental care during this time.” Sullivan allegedly provided her stepson with “minimal amounts of food and water, which led to his extremely malnourished condition.”

In the released statement obtained by WVIT, “S” also said, “I am much better and stronger than I was the day the first responders carried me out of my home. I am beyond grateful for the care I have received since then. To all the health care professionals who have helped and nurtured me, thank you. In addition to all of your care, I appreciated the chance to have my first-ever birthday party to celebrate turning 32.”

Part of the statement read, “Much has already been said that tells part of the story of the abuse I endured. Someday, perhaps my whole story will be told.”

Sullivan was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, cruelty to persons, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

  • Opp High School’s Haley Vendetti receives Bryant-Jordan Student Achievement Award

Opp High School’s Haley Vendetti receives Bryant-Jordan Student Achievement Award

    Published 3:09 pm Tuesday, April 15, 2025

    STORY COURTESY OF JOSH BEAN/AHSAA

Opp High School’s Haley Vendetti was named the recipient of the statewide Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Foundation’s Ken and Betty Joy Blankenship Student Achievement Award during the organization’s 40th annual athlete awards banquet held at the Sheraton Hotel Ballroom in Birmingham Monday night.

    Haley Vendetti

Vendetti penned a poignant personal essay for the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship, powerfully describing loneliness and isolation caused by her often chaotic and unpredictable family situation.

Vendetti and her mother survived a horrific car crash in 2014 that claimed the lives of her stepfather and two younger siblings. In the aftermath, Vendetti said her mother slipped into the grip of depression and addiction, leading to Haley living a life of constant uncertainty as she ping-ponged between living with each parent and bouncing from school to school for nearly a decade.

“My ceiling became the only thing that truly saw me — silent, still and unwavering,” she wrote in her Bryant-Jordan essay. “It was the one constant in a world that I felt full of people, but devoid of connection.”

Vendetti attended schools in Florida and South Carolina. She also lived for a time with her father in Mobile. She arrived at Opp as a high school freshman after attending schools in Andalusia, Pleasant Home and Straughn, as well as Fleeta Junior High in Opp.

How does Haley describe her journey? “Really stressful, I will say that!” she said. “It’s stressful trying to take care of yourself.”

Haley’s ability to persevere despite the lack of the normal parental support is a big reason she was named the Class 4A, Region 2 Award recipient and one of 52 regional winners in the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program’s Achievement category, which honors high school athletes who have overcome personal adversity. She and other regional winners, all of whom earn a $3,000 scholarship, were honored at the 40th annual Bryant-Jordan Awards Banquet.

Vendetti received the Ken and Betty Joy Blankenship Student-Achievement Award as the overall state achievement winner. As a Class 4A and overall winner, she receives an additional $7,500 scholarship.

A total of 104 high school senior student-athletes — 52 in the program’s achievement category and 52 in the scholar-athlete category — were nominated by their schools and selected as regional winners. More than $12 million in scholarship funds has been distributed to student recipients by the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program since its inception in 1986.

“If the point of this scholarship is to help change the life of a student who has overcome adversity, Haley is the true definition of why this scholarship is needed,” Opp teacher Abby Presley wrote in a support letter to the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program.

Vendetti remains reluctant to share many details, describing a strained relationship with both of her parents. Once she arrived at Opp, however, Vendetti began to find the security and connection she craved.

First, she moved in with a friend near the end of the eighth grade and lived there for two years, and she has been living with her boyfriend and his parents for little more than a year.

With her living situation stabilized, Vendetti played tennis and excelled in cross country at Opp, twice running in the AHSAA Cross Country Championships. She picked up a series of part-time jobs to pay for her own expenses, and she currently works in the after-school program at W.S. Harlan Elementary in Florala.

She initially planned to run cross country at Gulf Coast (Florida) State College, but has since opted to concentrate solely on her academic career. She plans to study sonography at Gulf Coast and hopes to eventually work in a medical clinic that specializes in pediatrics or obstetrics.

“The more and more I’ve learned about her story and the more and more I’ve seen her grow and the more and more I’ve seen her mature, I’ve seen her be an inspiration for people around her, even for old folks like me,” Opp Principal Matt Blake said. “The word that really comes to mind that epitomizes Haley is persistence. She has overcome a lot in her life. She has been very persistent to not let the obstacles in her life define her but rather take the initiative to define who and what she is based on her own decisions.”

Few people know about Vendetti’s personal struggles because she hardly ever shares the details with others.

Vendetti uses her family turmoil as motivation to chase her dreams of going to college and living a successful life. That attitude, Blake said, is what makes Vendetti special.

“She is a humble person. She is a hard-working person,” he said. “She doesn’t want pity, doesn’t want someone feeling sorry for her, and she doesn’t want quote-unquote handouts because of the obstacles she’s overcome. She’s a goal-oriented individual who wants to get the things she gets in life on merit.”

What has Vendetti learned through her years of adversity? “It was definitely something rough to go through, but there are always people who have it 10 times worse. That’s my outlook,” Vendetti said. “I always tell myself that somebody out there is having it worse, or somebody out there has it 10 times worse than I have.”

Described by her teachers and coaches as an encourager and uplifter with a kind word to say to someone when the most need it, Vendetti said she found inner strength when she needed it most.

“I think I truly would be okay when I was able to look back and realize I had the fortitude,” she said. “So many have helped me along the way. I am really thankful for everyone who has supported me”

A total of 104 high school regional senior honorees were recognized and awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships through the Bryant-Jordan program.

  • Advanced Micro Devices Prepares For First ‘Made-In America’ Chip

Advanced Micro Devices Prepares For First ‘Made-In America’ Chip

Ready To Start Production: Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda scores yet another win this week

(ZH) – President Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda—specifically, the revival of domestic critical supply chains to reinforce hemispheric defense—scored yet another win this week.

Reuters reported that Advanced Micro Devices’ most advanced processor chips would soon enter series production at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) factory in Arizona.

Our new fifth-generation EPYC is doing very well, so we’re ready to start production,” AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su told reporters in Taipei earlier, referring to the company’s server-grade processor line, designed for data centers, cloud computing, high-performance computing, and enterprise workloads.

Shifting AMD’s server-grade processor line to TSMC’s Arizona facility marks the first time the U.S. company will produce these chips domestically, eliminating the supply chain risks associated with manufacturing at TSMC’s Taiwan-based fabs.

We want to have a very resilient supply chain, so Taiwan continues to be a very important part of that supply chain, but the United States is also going to be important and we’re expanding our work there, including our work with TSMC and other key supply chain partners,” Su said.

News that AMD’s fifth-generation EPYC will be produced in America comes one day after Nvidia unveiled new initiatives aimed at strengthening America’s chip manufacturing sector:

    • Nvidia is localizing AI chip and supercomputer manufacturing in the U.S. for the first time, partnering with TSMC, Foxconn, Wistron, Amkor, and SPIL.
    • Over 1 million square feet of manufacturing space has been commissioned for Blackwell chips and AI supercomputers in Arizona and Texas.
    • Mass production of these chips is expected within 12–15 months.
    • Total AI infrastructure by Nvidia could total $500 billion over the next four years.

Restoring U.S. chipmaking capacity is critical for several reasons, but national security stands above all. China can easily disrupt chip supply chains in Taiwan—something that could send shockwaves around the world, impacting U.S. defense production of missiles, tanks, and other critical systems, many of which rely on chips fabricated overseas.

If the U.S. intends to compete—and win—in the 2030s, the ongoing expansion of domestic chip manufacturing is not just welcome news; it’s essential for survival.

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … (TLB)
