    NLC, TUC shutdown NERC, EEDC offices over electricity tariff hike in Anambra

    Anambra State workers under the aegis of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Monday shutdown offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Enugu Electricity Development Company (EEDC) in Awka to protest over the Band A, Band B, Band C and Band E tariff hike.

    It was gathered that the Union leaders stormed the two offices with various placards with inscriptions such as; “we say no to Band A, B, C and E tariff, all Nigerians are equal, Nigerians demand immediate reversed of the electricity tariff, electricity tariff is an inhumane treatment and economic sabotage, let the poor breathe, NERC – enough is enough let Nigerians breathe, among others singing and calling for the reversal of the tariff.

    In their separate interview with Journalists shortly after the picketing, the State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Chris Ogbonna, said the picketing is going on simultaneously nationwide to demand a better Nigeria.

    According to them, “we are embarking on the protest to register our dissatisfaction and to informed the Federal Government to returned the electricity management back to the public domain as it is before.

    “We strongly believe that the electricity challenges will be best managed in the hands of a public servant than private. Nigerians are seriously suffering of this. The consistent increased is adding too much pains to the masses.

    “So we are calling on the President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently do the needful by reversing the sector back to public servants to be in charge of, to avoid a total breakdown,” the bodies summited.

    It was also gathered that the exercise also took place at Onitsha and Nnewi respectively.

    C’River: Workers laud Governor Otu’s 40,000 naira salary increment

    Workers in Cross River State have expressed profound gratitude for the governor’s decision to pay N40,000 living wage to public and civil servants in the State.

    The government of Cross River State, under the leadership of Governor Bassey Out, has announced a 40,000 naira salary increment for state workers, in what many said is a commendable move.

    The announcement was made at the U.J Esuene Sports Stadium during the International Workers’ Day celebrations in the state capital, Calabar.

    Baring their minds on the gesture, the workers who spoke in Calabar said it is a much-needed relief amidst the current economic challenges plaguing the country.

    However, the workers who spoke in separate interviews with our correspondent in Calabar appealed to the Governor to make good his promise effective from this May payment.

    For Festus Eka, an employee of one of the state ministries, who expressed his appreciation, said the additional 10,000 naira would go a long way in addressing his family’s basic needs, such as food and utilities.

    “I have three children, and this increment will ensure that essentials like garri and noodles are no longer a burden,” Eka remarked.

    Similarly, Mrs. Magdalene Asuquo, a staff member of a state agency, emphasized the positive impact the salary increase will have on her family of four.

    “The 10,000 naira increment means a lot to us, especially now. It will significantly reduce the burden of buying food items, which have become increasingly expensive,” she said.

    Another state employee, Theressa Ogbeche, expressed her delight in witnessing this development while still in service and appealed  that the payment  should be effected in their May salary.

    “The governor’s people first agenda is evident, and this salary increment, coupled with the implementation of arrears and step increments, is a huge leap forward,” she stated.

    On his part, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Comrade Monday Ogbodum, commended Governor Bassey Otu for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of Cross River State workers.

    “A healthy workforce is a productive one, and the governor’s passion for civil servants is a testament to his desire for the state’s growth and development,” Ogbodum remarked.

    Our reporter learned that the workers’ unanimous praise for the governor’s actions underscores the significance of this decision, which has brought much-needed relief to the state’s workforce.

    The salary increment is seen as a tangible demonstration of the governor’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by civil servants and ensuring their well-being.

    The Cross River State Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has lauded the state government under the leadership of Senator Prince Bassey Otu, the “people’s first Governor,” for its remarkable achievements within the first eleven months in office.

    The Congress used the opportunity  to call on Civil / public servants and indeed, the entire Cross Riverians to be patient and give governor Otu the chance to deliver dividends of democracy which he has already started.

    In a statement issued by the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Monday Ogbodum, the TUC further commended the government for its efforts in rehabilitating and constructing roads within the Calabar Metropolis, improving street lighting as well as the beautification of the city capital and restoring traffic control lights.

    He also lauded the government for the proposed #40,000 salary increment, implementation of annual incremental steps, full implementation of 2014/2016 promotions, the Christmas and Easter bonuses paid to workers amongst others.

    Comrade Ogbodum noted that he believes in the principles of appreciation even in a little thing in other to achieve bigger ones.

    The TUC Chairman however stressed the urgent need for the Cross River State Government to fulfill other obligations to civil/ public servants by promptly attending to workers welfare demands, particularly looking towards the direction of payment of gratuity.

    While also calling on workers to be dedicated and be punctual at their duty posts, Comrade Ogbodum said, this would erase the 5% productivity level of the work force as declared by His Excellency during his May Day address.

    “We must put in our best to achieve effective service delivery in all MDAs,” the TUC Chairman reiterated.

    He appealed  to the workers to be hopeful, as the Organised Labor continues their engagement with the government to secure a more favorable outcome. While also appealing to government to live up to its promises and promptly too, most importantly the commencement of the implementation of the new salary structure as announced.

    “As the Cross River State Government confronts the pressing issue of meeting the worker’s welfare demands promptly, the TUC’s appeal echoes the concerns of many civil and public servants who have been adversely affected by the economic downturn.

    “In doing so, they can demonstrate their commitment to upholding the well-being and fair treatment of their invaluable workforce, reaffirming their dedication to the people of Cross River State,” Ogbodum  stated.

    In a show of solidarity, the Cross River State Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has extended their warm wishes to Christians on the joyous occasion of Easter.

    They used the opportunity to call on Christians to reflect upon the valuable lessons learned during this period of devout observance.

    Comrade Monday Ogbodum, State Chairman of the Union, who made the call in a statement, Saturday emphasized the significance of fervent prayers for the government at all levels, particularly in light of the challenging economic situation currently plaguing the nation.

    The TUC Chairman urged Christians to implore God’s mercy upon the masses, praying for relief from their daily struggles.

    Furthermore, Comrade Ogbodum stressed the urgent need for the Cross River State Government to fulfill their obligation to civil servants by promptly paying the expired wage awards.

    His words: “The negotiated palliative allowance, essential prior to the implementation of the wage awards, expired as of February 2024.

    “This development, coupled with the recent decrease in salary payments and the suspension of the palliative allowance for March, has significantly reduced the take-home pay of civil and public servants.

    “Consequently, they now find themselves at the receiving end of the prevailing economic challenges.

    “Despite these hurdles, the TUC assured the government of their unwavering commitment to the success of Prince Otu’s administration,” he said.

    Comrade Ogbodum appealed to the workers to maintain hope, as the organized labour continues their engagement with the government to secure a more favorable outcome.

    He encouraged them to commemorate this occasion with moderation and a spirit of gratitude.

    “As the Cross River State Government confronts the pressing issue of meeting the wage awards promptly, the TUC’s appeal echoes the concerns of many civil and public servants who have been adversely affected by the economic downturn.

    “With ongoing negotiations between the organized labour and the government, hopes for an equitable resolution remain high.

    “It is our hope that the government takes the necessary steps to address the dire needs of the workers, ensuring that the expired wage awards receive the deserved attention.

    “In doing so, they can demonstrate their commitment to upholding the well-being and fair treatment of their invaluable workforce, reaffirming their dedication to the people of Cross River State,” Ogbodum stated.

    Just In: NLC, TUC Suspend Strike After Meeting With National Security Adviser

    The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have called off the ongoing nationwide strike, citing the “intervention” of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

    The National Executive Council of the NLC and the TUC on Wednesday night suspended the ongoing strike, after a meeting which commenced at a few minutes past 7 pm and lasted for close to one hour.

    The unions held a joint extraordinary National Executive Council meeting at 7pm to decide on the ongoing nationwide strike. This followed the earlier meeting between the Federal Government and the organised labour over the ongoing nationwide strike that ended with no resolution.

    The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu had invited the labour leaders to his office in Abuja for a meeting in an effort to end the strike declared by the organised labour to protest against the attack and brutalisation of the NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State capital, on November 1 by policemen and thugs.

    The NSA had in a statement said that some Ajaero’s attackers had been arrested and that investigation on the matter is ongoing, which he said his office is coordinating.

    Meanwhile, the National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, at the leaders’ meeting announced the suspension of the strike in an interview with PUNCH in Abuja.

    “The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike. We did this based on our trust for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his words,” he said.
