    Dr. Bernard Atrogor Oko, a prominent figure and the current SUB-DEAN of the Faculty of Educational Foundation Studies at the University of Calabar, has extended his warm congratulations to Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu and his Deputy, Rt Hon Peter Odey, on their recent triumph in the election tribunal.

    The governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu has assured of his government readiness to work with security agencies to curb  all forms of insecurity in the state.

    Otu gave the assurance when he received in his office, the Cross River State Commandant of the National Security and Civil Defense Corps, Charles Brown.

    The governor who extolled the leadership qualities as well as the service experience of the state Commandant, said such synergy was imperative because of the peculiar nature of the Corp and their closeness to the people.

    “I am very happy to receive you today, I am happy that you have served at various capacities in the corp, which emphasizes your experience and leadership qualities.

    “You are the closest to the civilian populace and that is why we will support you to fight all forms of insecurity in our state. I do not believe that Kinetic method alone can do this, we will also employ other methods to ensure that we get a holistic result.

    “As a government, we are working very hard to address a lot of the insecurity issues that have affected us for a long time now, especially kidnapping and by the grace of God we are winning.

    “The issue of unauthorized scrap activities is also another thing we are tackling. Some of their  activities encourage criminality and you must tackle them. We are ready to partner in anyway possible to ensure that our state is firmly secured.

    In his remarks, Commandant of the NCDSC, Commander Charles Brown expressed appreciation to the governor for the audience, maintaining that the Corp, under his leadership was ready to partner with the government to secure every part of the state.

    “Your desire to make Cross River State safe and investment friendly is one that we appreciate so much, that is why we came here to say that we are ready to support the state in this regard. We assure you that we will work together to bring the glory of the state back.”

    Governor Otu charges youths on responsible use of social media

    Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has charged youths on the responsible use of social media in shaping positive narrative about the state.

    The governor gave the charge when members of the leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, (NYCN), Cross River State chapter, conferred on him grand patron of youths during a courtesy visit in Government House, Calabar on Monday.

    The governor noted that social media is a powerful tool in information dissemination but is also now a channel for misinformation, rumour mongering and fake news by young users.

    “The usage of the social media in information dissemination helps people stay connected and share ideas, thoughts, and opinions with others in a safe and secure environment. Unfortunately, misinformation, disinformation, and fake news are common challenges confronting us through the platform. The social media is filled with a large amount of misinformation, which often misleads the public to make wrong decisions, stimulates negative public emotions, and poses serious threats to public safety and social order.

    “The youths, a primary arm of the society is the driving force on social media, and we have witnessed how misinformation from this sector has caused various problems to the society.

    “As government, we are concerned about reshaping the usage of this platform for the benefit of government and to foster productive development. I charge you to use the social media to promote useful information aimed at developing the society and support government.

    “The youths represents the greatest segment of government. If you don’t build and mentor the youths, there is no future. As a government, we cannot rise without your maximum cooperation. We will support the youths in all sectors and frontiers. We are starting by training over 2, 000 youths in ICT. We will continue to work with the youths to develop the state,” Otu said.

    Speaking earlier, the chairman of the state’ youth council chapter, Comrade Dan Obo, commended Governor Otu on his development stride and for giving a significant number of youths opportunity in his administration.

    “We are here to celebrate you, we are excited with the way the state is running and want to thank you for the engagements of youths in your cabinet. We are confident of the successes that awaits Cross River State in the coming days under your leadership,” Obo stated.
