There is no other silver bullet that makes the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River more attractive to members of opposition parties than the exceptional performance and purposeful leadership of the state governor.

This was the view of the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Oden Ewa. He stated this on Saturday 19 April, 2025, when he and other leaders of the APC received hundreds of members of opposition parties that decamped to the APC in Ugep, Yakurr local government area.

He said beyond the Party, Governor Bassey Otu has continue to set new benchmark for governance in the state as visibly demonstrated in the incredible achievements recorded just within two years in office.

Oden Ewa stated that those who defected to the APC are people that love the progress and development of Cross River State, hence their defection is a reflection of their support and endorsement of the Governor’s good works.

  • How Gov Bassey Otu Convinced FG to commence work on Calabar section of the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway

How Gov Bassey Otu Convinced FG to commence work on Calabar section of the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway

    By Edem Darlington

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi announced his ministry’s readiness to commence construction at the Calabar section of the Lagos – Calabar Coastal Highway. The minister made the announcement in Lagos during a stakeholders engagement.

A few days before that announcement, Sen. Umahi had confirmed that 30 kilometers of the road, starting from section one would be ready for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu by May 29, 2025.

The coastal highway from the Cross River State axis covers a total of 130km road network, traversing several communities.

Before the modification, the road was supposed to have passed through communities like Ikoneto, Ekpri Adiabo, Ifako Okoyong and the rest.

However, with the current modification on the road, it is expected that it would terminate somewhere around Awi in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The modification may not be unconnected with governor Bassey Otu’s proactiveness   owing majorly to his visionary leadership and determination to end the persistent frustration of Cross Riverians along the Calabar-Itu Road. That determination prompted the governor to begin the Adiabo-Eseku-Ikoneto road from the Tinapa end. Work is currently ongoing at the site and nearing completion.

That singular action led to the achievement of two cardinal things.
First, it proved a point to those who did not want the Calabar -Itu Road to work to have a rethink that Cross River  now has a new leadership that priotizes the welfare of her people

Secondly, determined to ensure that the people of the State were not sidelined in the scheme of things, especially regarding infrastructural projects as important as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road, the governor began very early to engage major stakeholders with the aim of ensuring that the project commenced simultaneously from the Lagos and Calabar ends of the important highway.

On September 22, 2023, while welcoming the Minister of Works in his office in Calabar, Governor Bassey Otu appealed to the federal government on the need to commence the Calabar section of the coastal highway so as to make the progress of work faster as well as create a sense of belonging to the people of the State.

The minister was at the time in the state to inspect the pilot concrete road project along the Calabar-Itu Road.

“Let me commend Mr. President on his landmark project, especially the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway which is soon to begin and at the same time solicit that while work is soon to commence at the Lagos axis, the Calabar section of the road should also be considered so that the work can progress with the speed of light and create employment and business opportunities to our people “ Governor Otu stated.

Not satisfied, the governor intensified efforts with several visits to Abuja, the seat of power, where he engaged with key stakeholders and actively lobbied influential authorities.

Impressed by the governor’s persistence and  love for his people, the President, through the Ministry of Works at a stakeholders meeting in Calabar, announced the approval for the commencement of  work at the Calabar section of the road.

In a rapid response, governor Bassey Otu on January 1,  2024, immediately applauded President Bola Tinubu for his directive to commence work on the Calabar axis of the road as well as approval for construction of Calabar Ebonyi – Benue- Kogi – Nasarawa – Abuja super Highway as the major signature projects of his administration.
In an appreciation letter dated Ist January 2024, Governor Otu observed that section 3A of the project traverses eleven communities in the state with a total length of 130 kilometres, while a portion of the Calabar-Ebonyi- Benue – Kogi – Nasarawa -Abuja Superhighway also fall within Cross River state.

He said the two projects would go a long way to improve the connectivity and accessibility thereby boosting economic activities in the region towards enhancing the living standard of the People. Governor Otu also lauded the president’s dedication to nation Building.

“I most profoundly felicitate Your Excellency for your administrations interventions in the critical sectors of the economy. Thank you for your dedication to nation-building. Please accept, Your Excellency, my highest regards and that of the good people of Cross River State,” the governor concluded.

In June 2024, during the All Progressives Congress (APC), South South regional meeting held in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, Governor Bassey Otu again openly appreciated President Tinubu and pleaded with the federal government to consider commencing work at the Calabar section of the coastal highway in other to give the people of the state a sense of belonging.

Present at the meeting were notable sons and daughters from the region, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, former Deputy Senate President, Omo Agege etc.

The announcement of the eventual flag-off of the Calabar section of the coastal highway scheduled to hold on the 14th of April, 2025 is the climax of efforts by a hard working governor who blends love for his people with effective political lobbying for the overall good of his state.

His competence, effectiveness as well as resourcefulness as a leader of the APC at the national level is never in doubt. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also understands the importance of having a resourceful individual as Governor Bassey Otu as a strategic member of his party and as such, have tried to play politics of inclusivity with all regions of the country.

As the official flag-off of the Calabar axis commences tomorrow, Cross Riverians are expecting that the same effort, consistency and push that the Lagos axis is experiencing will be given to that of the Calabar section.

Congratulations to the people of Cross River and congratulations to governor Bassey Edet Otu, the people first governor.

“I’m Back with Double Dose of Energy,” Gov Otu Declares as He Returns from Annual Leave

…Reassures Cross Riverians of Economic Transformation

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has returned to Calabar after a three-week annual leave, declaring that he is back with “renewed vigor and a double dose of energy” to accelerate the transformation of the state.

Addressing a jubilant crowd of supporters and government officials who thronged the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, the Governor reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on his administration’s development blueprint, stating that the short break had recharged him for even greater service.

“I thank God for His grace, because the strength He has given me is immeasurable, unimaginable,” he said, adding that: “We had a manifesto to deliver to our people, and to some extent, I believe that in this second year, we can already boast that some of those promises are coming to fruition.”

Continuing, the Governor said:“I truly missed each and every one of you, and I’ve come back with more strength and clarity of purpose.”

He revealed that part of his time away was spent on a critical state assignment—inspecting and conducting due diligence on two aircraft acquired to ease the travel burden of air passengers in and out of Calabar. The process, he noted, was rigorous, involving over 200,000 pages of documentation and detailed physical inspections.

“We had to go through every bolt, every screw. It was painstaking but necessary to ensure safety and accountability,” Otu explained. He disclosed that both aircraft are in the final stages of clearance and are expected to arrive in the state within a few weeks.

Governor Otu further assured that the solid foundation his administration has laid is beginning to yield results. “We have planted the seeds. Now we must nurture them to harvest,” he said.

He also highlighted the arrival of major federal projects in the state, including the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone initiative and the long-anticipated flag-off of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The Governor described these as historic milestones that will fully integrate Cross River into the national economic grid.

“Cross River has long been projected as a major evacuation corridor,” he said. “We are finally stepping into our rightful place in Nigeria’s economic structure.”

The Governor emphasized that his administration is strengthening agricultural value chains to boost exports, food production, and economic inclusion.

He announced that the President of the African Development Bank and Nigeria’s Vice President are scheduled to visit the state for the groundbreaking of a new Export Processing Economic Zone—a transformative project that will redefine Cross River’s economy and open up new frontiers for jobs and investment.

Reassuring the people of inclusiveness, Governor Otu said, “There will be open doors for everyone to participate in this economic revival. The sky is the limit for Cross River.”

The Governor returned alongside his wife, Her Excellency Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, to a rousing welcome by government officials, traditional leaders, residents, and well-wishers at the airport.

Additionally, Tony Eteng thanked Governor Otu “for finding Hon. James Anam, one of the esteemed leaders of Ward Two, competent and deserving of overseeing the affairs of governance in Calabar Municipality as the Executive Chairman.” He said Apostle James Anam is a seasoned and hardworking politician, who over the years, have sacrificed so much for the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the good people of Municipal at large.

    By Asuquo Cletus

The Cross River State Working and Executive Committees of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have unanimously endorsed Governor Bassey Otu and his deputy, Peter Odey, as the party’s sole candidates for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

Declaring their decision on Monday during a press briefing at the party’s secretariat, the state party chairman Alphonsus Eba, emphasized the duo’s leadership, loyalty, and governance track record, affirming that “nobody changes a winning team.”

Alphonsus also called on all members and support groups to mobilize for grassroots outreach while reaffirming its stance against unauthorized legal actions in its name.

Addressing concerns over political inclusivity, APC leadership maintained that other positions remain open for contest, except for the governorship and deputy governorship seats.

He said “It’s been almost one year and ten months in office. I’ve come to show that we made the best choice. They say that one good time deserves another. It’s why we have decided to start, and to make it known, that in front of the Peregrino Government House of Cross River States, the State Working Committee of the party, and the State Executive Committee of the party, met today, and have come and resolved that Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, is our sole candidate for the Governorship election of 2027.

“It was a joint ticket that they had, with His Excellency, the present acting Governor, RT Hon Peter Odey, a young man whom we have found so much loyalty, we have seen so much intellect, we have seen so much support base to the Governor.

“Nobody changes a winning team, and we know that the Governor is a man that is filled with wisdom. It is therefore the decision of this party, that these two best pair, by the special grace of God, will fly the flag of our party in 2027.

“All party members, support groups, are therefore commissioned to freely go into the field, and to continue the evangelical mission that will now take them to the field. Nobody speaks to the converted. We need to do more work, with our brothers and sisters in the opposition, to join hands with us.

“This is because, Cross River State politics has been run on a trajectory of peace, love, unity, growth, and perfect understanding, of movement from the South, that went to the Central, and went to the North, and has now berthed back in the South.

“And because the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the right to seek second term, and because this party is in full support of His Excellency, the Governor and his deputy, even if he is unwilling to run, we are saying that we will procure only one ticket, and we will have his name, just like we did in 2023. We are appealing to him, to hack into the heartbeat of members of our party, that wants him to continue the good works.”

He praised Governor Otu and Acting Governor Odey for their alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, asserting it was a necessary step to prevent conflict escalation.

“We want to also use this opportunity to thank His Excellency the Governor, and even while he was not here, to use the opportunity of the action of the Acting Governor of the State, who came out very boldly to giving support to the action of Mr. President, when a state of emergency was declared in River State.

“That action that has brought peace today in River State, which some persons in the South-South Governors Forum almost misrepresented the position of Cross River State, but for which the Acting Governor of Cross River State came out boldly, courageously, to say that he was never consulted as Acting Governor, a position that we are so proud of, that our boss, the Governor himself, who is on short vacation, also agreed with totally.

“We are proud of our leaders. And we use this opportunity to commend Mr. President for that bold action, which truly, truly has brought peace today, because the drums of war that we started witnessing when the letter of service of impeachment notice was sent, was acting of almost like the return of the Armageddon, but that today has been saved, and we say all thanks to God.

“In the politics of Cross River State, we want to use this opportunity to make it widely known that anybody who aspires to run for any office apart from the office of the Governor and Deputy Governor of the State, those who are already sitting, they have the right to aspire.

“Those who intend to take over those seats from them also have a right to aspire, and we have not given automatic seats or tickets to anybody apart from the Governor and Deputy Governor. Everybody is therefore enjoined to please return back to their constituents, and work with them to make sure they get the support of their people.

“A lot of persons who have not properly engaged should know that there is still time for engagement, because primaries will only be sometime next year around this time, and therefore, for the little efforts that have been made, they can only build on it,” he added.

The APC also promised to unseat Senator Jarigbe Agom of the People’s Democratic Party in the National Assembly.

Special Advisers Forum passes vote of confidence on Gov Otu, declares no vacancy in govt house in 2027

    By Kelvin Obambon

Cross River Special Advisers Forum has passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the state governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, declaring that come 2027 there is no vacancy in Peregrino.

The resolution was passed on Friday during a press briefing at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar, the state capital. Having carefully examined developmental projects across the three senatorial districts of the state, the Special Advisers scored the governor high and unanimously passed a clean bill of health on the administration.

Chairman of the Forum and Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, underscored the significance of the governor’s infrastructural development on the economy of the state. He stressed that the Adiabo-Ikoneto has been made accessible, adding “it takes a governor with a big heart to bring such development.”

Akiba emphasized that “governor Bassey Otu is remodeling Cross River in all facet. We were in a state where businesses had closed down. Investors were no more interested in Cross River, but as you can see today construction sites are booming. Governor Bassey Otu is an excellent leader; a transformational leader; a leader with difference. Integrity combined with humility. We don’t have that kind of asset in any governor in Nigeria. He’s accessible. He has listening ears and he is working without talking.”

He said that the governor’s influence extends beyond Cross River which is why the state is able to attract federal projects.

“In national politics he’s on the front. We have a governor who is the deputy chairman of the South South Governors’ Forum. Some people are coming to play local politics with federal interventions.

“To put the record straight, whatever project we are enjoying from federal government is because we have a governor that is influential at the center. We have a governor that draws the president’s attention to the issues that bother Cross River State,” Akiba said.
