  • D.I.G commends Neo Black Movement for donating building to police in C’ River

    Efio-Ita Nyok|21 May 2017
MR Emmanuel Inyang, the Deputy Inspector General of Police coordinating police operations in the south-south states has commended the Neo Black Movement, a Pan African organization for constructing and handing over a building for the Cross River Police Command.
Mr Inyang who made the commendation on Saturday evening in Calabar during the 13th annual lecture and 40th anniversary celebration of the movement stated that the Neo Black Movement through its philanthropic activities has shown that it was an organisation with good intentions for the development of society.
Mr Inyang who spoke through the Cross River Police Commissioner, Mr Hafiz Inuwa stated that the  building was constructed with surprising speed adding that the police is underfunded and has inadequate personnel to man every nook and cranny of the country and therefore should be assisted by the people through provision of working tools and supply of information  to enhance their operations.
“The police as we know it today is underfunded and the number of policemen cannot go round everybody as required by the United Nations so what the police needs is for the members of the public to partner with us by assisting us though the provision of working tools like vehicles, buildings, walkie  talkie and also giving us information about criminals around them”. Inyang stated
He said members of the public have the right to arrest anyone seen committing a crime and subsequently hand over such a person to the police for integration before being charged to court.
“Criminals live among us and some us of know them but sometimes people who know them keep quiet and such conspiracy of silence breeds crime which should not be the case because no one is immune to being attacked by hoodlums”
Mr Cosmas Ndukwe, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly in a lecture on curbing youth restiveness stated that going by the United Nations definition of a youth which is those  between the ages of 15 and 24, most restive activities are carried out by those who are adults but the blame is heaped on the youths
“People who are youths are those between the ages of 14 and 25 and this class of people  are  mostly primary and secondary school students and you  see a man who is forty or fifty engaging in restiveness instead of rightly terming it adult restiveness we still term it  but they are said to be youths restiveness”
He said what will stem restiveness in Nigeria is good governance and justice because people would continue to agitate and demand for their rights where  they feel  ill treated  or subjected to acts of injustice at any given time.
“The Neo Black Movement is at the vanguard for the fight against injustice by anyone and we  will continue to do that until the society is free of acts of oppresion and injustice”. Ndukwe concluded

  • History of Carnival Calabar, It Bands & more

    (Updated October, 2023.)

    By Frank Ulom

As the day draws closer to this year’s Carnival Calabar and Festival, THE PARADISE NEWS has decided to run a history of the biggest street event in Africa including its participating bands.

    History of Carnival Calabar:

The Carnival Calabar also known as Calabar Carnival and Calabar Festival has been a game changer for the economy of Cross River state and its people since its inception in 2004, when the then governor of the state, Donald Duke, had a vision of making the state the hub for tourism and hospitality in Nigerian and in Africa.

Calabar has become the pride of Nigeria as far as tourism, carnival and hospitality are concerned. Calabar Carnival is a unique display of African heritage, showcased through music, dance, drama and visual creativity, which is reflected in the design of floats, costumes and make-up. Since its inception, this festival has grown tremendously in popularity and scope.

It is not uncommon to now have families choosing Calabar as their tourism destination for their annual Christmas break which has made the carnival grow in leaps and bounds.

The event is already in its 18th edition and counting with more bands being inculcated into the event. So far, there are 5 competitive and other non-competitive bands participating in every edition. The Carnival adopts a theme every year to complement the activities of the event. Theme’s like; Green Carnival, Ain’t No Support Us, Migration, Africanism, Humanity, Climate Change, etc., have been adopted in recent years. In 2015 & 2016, Climate Change (aka Green Carnival) was used as it signifies the effort the State is using to keep its large forest to help reduce global warming.

    Carnival Calabar Themes:

From 2004 till date, the Carnival has adopted different and unique themes to match the activities of the year. Apart from the themes being unique, the event also plays its role accordingly.

2008 Theme: Sustaining Earth Treasures through Our Culture
2009 Theme: Land of our Birth, Our People, Our Heritage
2010 Theme: Our Strength and Resilience; the Bedrock of Our Future
    2011 Theme: Endless Possibilities

They are the largest and most entertaining of all the 5 competing bands on parade during the annual Carnival Calabar (the largest street party in Africa).

The band has evolved over the years to become a brand name of choice and reference point, through the charismatic leadership of the band leader in the person of Chief Senator Gershom Bassey, Senator representing Cross River State Southern district. The Masta Blasta Band is the only band that accommodates and caters for the “belonging” needs of all segments of society. Their all-inclusive approach to the Carnival Calabar encourages an enviable synergy between family, and friends and embraces the participation of both local and international visitors to the joys of taking part in an international carnival parade.

The Orange Family is currently the overall champion of the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Carnival Calabar. They are on record, as the only band that has won the most prices in all categories of the competition within a single year, in the entire history of the Calabar Carnival.

    5. Passion 4

Passion 4 is the most successful band in Carnival Calabar, having been nine edition Champions and two edition first runners-up in the sixteen years of the existence of the competition aspect of the carnival. Passion 4 whose former leader and founder’, Mr Chris Agibe who also served as the former Executive Secretary of the Cross River State Carnival Commission has a new band leader called Barr. Attah Ochinike, the Attorney General and former Commissioner for Justice of Cross River State.

Passion 4 which is also the green band is the only band that creates a level playing field for children and adults to have fun. The band is every sponsor’s ideal platform for partnership and the mileage we offer is next to none.

I married my wife a virgin – Ayade (Video)

    By Frank Ulom

The Executive Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Sen. Ben Ayade says he married his wife as a virgin which is the pride of Africans who value the virtues of virginity and chastity.

Ayade who publicly made the statement in Calabar on Thursday while delivering a lecture on the HIV/AIDS scourge to mark the 2016 World AIDS Day, stated that the greatest gift any woman can possibly hand to her husband is to present her body as a virgin to him.

“I should say to the teenagers here today that when somebody leads you to the altar, at the end of that day he should be glad to say, I married my wife a virgin,” Ayade said.

The governor stated that young people easily give in to sex for financial inducement, peer pressure and the influence of international movies and believe that with the use of a condom, they are secure from getting infected with HIV which in most cases is not full-proof protection against the pandemic disease.

“When people use condom, they think they are safe which is the major cause of infection because evidence abounds that the use of a condom does not provide total protection against HIV/AIDS since the condom itself has small holes that are 0.05 wider than microbes which makes HIV virus to pass successfully,” he added.

He said the best protection against infection is total abstinence and testing before marriage by couple and staying faithful to each other because the virus has the capacity to live in the body of an infected person for 25 years in some cases before the viral load overwhelms the body.

“During such a time, a person with the virus he becomes an effective carrier of the disease which gives him/her the chance to infect others during unprotected sex,” he said.

Dr Rose Nyambi, the Director General of the State Action Committee Against AIDS, SACA, also gave her remark saying, that the state has 164,267 persons, 108,000 females and 61,827 males living positively with the virus.

“It may interest you to know that SACA has been housing the Network of People Living with HIV. We have a directory of 80 support groups of people Living with the virus with a total of 164,267 comprising of 103,000 females and 61,827 males and out of this number, 25,907 are on ART,” she said.

She called for the scaling up of more HIV counseling and testing services by getting everyone in the state to know their HIV status if the state must achieve the global vision of ensuring that 90% of people know their status so that those who test positive are placed on treatment.
