  • FLASHBACK: Gani Fawehinmi Called Atiku Thief, Said He Stole Petroleum Funds Meant For Poor Nigerian Students In 2007 Interview

In a 2007 interview, the late legal luminary, Gani Fawehinmi described the immediate former Vice President at the time, Atiku Abubakar as a thief.

Fawehinmi described then-President Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku’s eight-year tenure which ended in May 2007 as “eight years of self-centred disposition, eight years of ‘wayo,’ eight years of deception, eight years of creating a few rich people, eight years of anti-masses programmes, eight years of deliberate junketing all over the world, eight years of make-believe, eight years of dictatorship, eight years of lack of coherent policies, eight years of so much wealth coming to the hands of government out of which Nigerians received aggravated poverty and economic pain”.

In the interview in which Fawehinmi described Obasanjo as the “most corrupt Nigerian,” said if not because of Obasanjo and Atiku’s rift at the time, Nigerians wouldn’t have known about Atiku’s corruption.

The late legal luminary, who died on September 5, 2009, after a prolonged battle with lung cancer at 71, said in the interview, “I am appalled, because if not for the feud between him and Atiku we may never have known that Atiku was messing up with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF.

“Obasanjo cannot say that he did not know that Atiku was stealing the PTDF, established in 1973, meant for the welfare of our country by training our brilliant students in the universities with the fund.

“A fund meant for the improvement of our petroleum technology, a fund meant to ensure that the sons and daughters of poor parents who have the intellect can engage in research work.

‘But alas! this fund was used, not only to pay lawyers but to establish just one company alone. Now, Atiku dipped his hand into it, (businessman Oyewole) Fasawe dipped his hand into it and Mr. President dipped his hand into it for personal reasons. We want to have the full story of PTDF and other agencies of government.”

Last Thursday, Atiku, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, thanked Fawehinmi (SAN) for inspiring him to dig into President Bola Tinubu’s past.

The former Vice President lost to Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.

Atiku said this at a world press conference in Abuja, two days after his lawyers through a United States court obtained the academic records of Tinubu from the Chicago State University (CSU) which showed discrepancies with what the sitting Nigerian president submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the February election.

The Registrar of CSU, Caleb Westberg, earlier said that the diploma Bola Tinubu submitted to Nigeria’s electoral body was not issued by the school.

Westberg, however, insisted that the Nigerian president is an alumnus of the school.

Though Atiku’s case challenging Tinubu’s election was dismissed by the Presidential Election Petition Court in September, the PDP candidate is hoping to use the case of the forged certificate as a strong argument against Tinubu in his appeal to the Supreme Court.

Speaking at the conference, Atiku said, “I wish to pay tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who inspired us on this path of discovery. Now, he can truly rest in peace in the assurance that what he started about 23 years ago has come to fruition. Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it.”

Shortly after Atiku’s world press conference, Omoyele Sowore, the candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, said Atiku ignored Fawehinmi and let him die a broken man when he (Fawehinmi) exposed Tinubu as a fraud and a certificate forger in 1999.

He asserted that the late Fawehinmi was humiliated and his car was smashed, while Atiku then went ahead to form alliances with Tinubu because it suited him and his ilk politically.

Sowore, who said this on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle last Thursday noted Nigeria had been kept down by the size of its evil and selfish opportunists who celebrate crooks and vilify the just amongst its citizens

He wrote, “When late Chief Gani Fawehinmi exposed @officialABAT as a fraud, a certificate forger, in 1999 he was humiliated, his car was smashed, the @atiku’s ignored him and he died a broken man.

“Atiku then went ahead to form alliances with him (Tinubu) because it suited him and his ilk politically. When in 2008 @SaharaReporters got hold of his drug forfeiture case file in Chicago, the platform was ridiculed and we were threatened. It is the case for those fighting relentlessly and selflessly for the betterment of our society either as advocates in the temple of justice, journalists, citizens throwing themselves on the frontlines to bring about a sane society.”

“I just read @atiku’s press statement today praising Chief Gani Fawehinmi to high heavens for starting this journey of discovery. This why our position remains a revolutionary change of political order. #RevolutionNow,” he added.

  • Coroner holds inquest into death of late Dowen College student, Sylvester Oromoni, mother rains curses on son’s killers

The coroner inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the cause of death of a 12-year-old student of prestigious Dowen College, on Monday, listened to the testimony of the deceased’s mom, Rosemary Oromoni.

Giving her testimony before the Coroner, Magistrate Mikail Kadiri, the bereaved mother who reportedly rained curses on killers of her son, told the sitting that she received a message from the school that her son was injured while playing football with some of his colleagues.

Mrs Oromoni narrated that after the family picked up Sylvester from the school in Lagos, he was subsequently taken to their hometown in Warri, Delta State, when his health did not improve.

She noted that when her son was brought back home from school, she noticed that his lips were scaly and he had a swollen hip.

“He was subsequently treated for malaria for three days at home but he was still in pain,” she said.

The woman added that the deceased eventually confessed to her that he was beaten up by five other students who also gave him a strange substance to drink.

She said before giving up the ghost, Sylvester could only give her the names of three of the students who brutalized him.

According to her, following his persistent poor health, the family doctor asked them to take him to the laboratory for a scan and X-ray but she said she could not recall the result because at that moment, she was heartbroken.

Sylvester eventually died on November 30, 2021, at a private hospital in Delta State, following what was said to be complications from the substance he was given to drink.

His death caused a lot of outrage which forced the Lagos State Government to shut down the school and a constitute a coroner’s inquest to investigate the circumstances of his death in January 2022.

At the end of the inquest, Kadiri, asked parties to file their final written addresses which will be adopted on November 20, 2023.

  • ‘We’re All Dead People That Haven’t Died Yet’ — CJN Ariwoola Speaks At Late Justice Nweze’s Valedictory Session

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has eulogized the life and works of the late Justice Chima Centus Nweze of the Supreme Court of Nigeria who died on Sunday, July 30, 2023, reminding attendees that they would die someday.

Ariwoola spoke about his deceased brother Justice during the valedictory session held in his honour at the main courtroom of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Ariwoola described him as a man of impeccable character, a legal icon, indomitable lion in the temple of justice.

The CJN said the judiciary was consoled by the indelible footprints Nweze engraved on the sands of time, reminding attendees to be properly guided as they would depart the world someday.

“Your death has, once again, made us realize that out of the several people that ever lived, almost all of them are dead now.

“In reality, we all are just dead people who haven’t died yet. Nevertheless, we have always found solace in the belief that as a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so does a well-used life, bring happy death.

“Rest well in the bosom of your creator, our dear brother Justice,” Ariwoola said.

On his part, the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi SAN, represented by the Solicitor-General of the Federation, Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, said the late Justice devoted his time to the just application of relevant laws.

“For the late Nweze, life was all about service, ” the AGF said through the Solicitor General.

THE WHISTLER reports that Nweze (65), who hails from Enugu State, was the judge who delivered a controversial judgement of the apex court affirming former Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, as the All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate for Yobe North.

Nweze was also the only judge who stood his ground against a majority decision of the apex court which had declared Hope Uzodinma the winner of the Imo state governorship election in 2019.

According to the Supreme Court data, “Nweze was sworn-in as Justice of Supreme Court on 29th October, 2014 and was born in Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State on 25th September, 1958.”

  • Kano State Government Fixes Friday For Mass Wedding Of 1800 Intending Couples

The Kano State Government has announced that all preparations for the planned mass wedding have been completed and it has set aside Friday, 13 October 2023 for the conduct of the sponsored mass weddings of 1,800 couples across the 44 local government areas of the state.

The state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this after inspecting all arrangements made at the state Hisbah Board’s premises to ascertain the level of progress so far achieved in regard to the planned mass wedding scheme.

SaharaReporters had last week reported that the state government sceened out intending couples for the mass wedding who tested positive for Hepatitis B, HIV, sickle cell and pregnancy.

The spokesperson of Hisbah Board, Lawan Fagge, had said the persons were found with one health issue or the other at the point of pre-marital test screening they were subjected to as part of the conditions for taking part in the state-sponsored wedding.

Fagge said the affected spouses were replaced in the ongoing exercise and subjected to counselling and medications.

Meanwhile, the state governor on Monday expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation so far on ground and commended Hisbah board and the ministry of health for executing the responsibilities given to them, particularly, as he found out that the exercise involved the  less privileged, and persons with disability.

The governor also expressed dismay at the decayed and abounding uncompleted buildings of offices at the Hisbah state headquarters for over eight years without completion.

“Despite the significant role played by Hisbah Board in ensuring peace, security, mitigating marriage couples and societal vices the board has not received proper attention from the previous administration in the last 8 years. This government will ensure that the board receives all the necessary attention it needs,” said governor Abba.

Speaking earlier, the Commander General of Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa described the government efforts on the planned sponsored mass weddings of 1800 couples programme as timely, adding that the scheme would no doubt assist people especially during this hardship as well as curb the menace of sexual abuse.

  • No way Obi can be tempted to work in Tinubu’s govt —LP

The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has thrown cold water on insinuations that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could be tempted to work with President Bola Tinubu in a ‘government of national unity.’

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh and its National Legal Adviser, Kehinde Edun, who made the party’s position in separate interactions with journalists on Tuesday, said such an arrangement can never work as it was just a figment of some person’s imagination.

“I think Obi has something he is pursuing, especially when we are sure we won the election. So it will be out of place for us to now say we want to work with this government,” Ifoh said.

“As far as LP is concerned, we are waiting for the Supreme Court to set aside the decision of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal that will pronounce Obi as the winner. That’s what we are waiting for.

“This is why we cannot be talking about Obi, somebody who is the owner of the mandate, working with somebody who is a pretender to the office. Until we see to the end of this case at the Supreme Court, it is not over,” he said.

On his part, the LP legal adviser also reiterated Ifoh’s stance, insisting that there was no way Obi can work with the Tinubu government.

“We are still in the process of reclaiming our stolen mandate through our appeal at the Supreme Court. There is no way our candidate can be seen working for this government. For now, he is focused on the appeal at the apex,” Edun said.

  • APC To Appeal Verdict Disqualifying Sylva From Bayelsa Gubernatorial Election

    apc-flag-logo.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced its intention to appeal a court judgment that disqualified Timipre Sylva from running in the upcoming Bayelsa State governorship election.

The Federal High Court on Monday, in a judgment delivered by Justice Donatus Okorowo, ruled that Sylva, who had been sworn in twice and governed Bayelsa for five years, would be in violation of the constitution if allowed to contest again.

But Perry Tukuwei, the Director of Media and Publicity for the APC Bayelsa Gubernatorial Campaign Council, expressed confidence that the court of appeal would overturn the trial court’s verdict in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Tukuwei said, “This reassurance is in reaction to a judgment which has the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate written all over it by a Federal High Court in Abuja in an already failed bid to dash the hopes of Bayelsa people to have their preferred candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva as the next helmsman at Creek Haven by Feb. 14, 2024.

“Sections 29 and 84 of the 2022 Electoral Act state that only persons who contested primaries of a political party that has the locus standi to file a pre-election matter to challenge the qualification of the party’s candidate in any election hence the suit filed by one Chief Demesuoyefa Kolomo who is not a member of the APC and didn’t contest our party’s governorship primaries do not have the locus standi to sue in the matter.

“Section 285 of the 1999 Nigerian constitution enjoins any aggrieved party to file an election matter within 14 days of the occurrence of the event but this case was filed on the 13th of June 2023 whereas INEC published the names of the governorship candidates for Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi on May 12.”

He further argued that the case is time-barred as it was filed beyond the 14-day window. He emphasized that Bayelsa residents should not be discouraged by the court’s decision.

He said, “To perfect their sinister act, the case was filed in Abuja. Is Abuja Bayelsa?

“Subsequently, the Bayelsa APC can smell the coffee and sinister moves by Gov. Douye Diri to go through the back door which is his usual practice having realised that our governorship candidate is coasting home to victory already following unrivalled acceptance across the state.”

  • ‘There’s army of Jezebel daughters in Nollywood’ –Charles Inojie knocks Ladies using Nollywood to hide their dubious means of living (video)

?There?s army of Jezebel daughters in Nollywood? ?Charles Inojie knocks Ladies using Nollywood to hide their dubious means of living (video)

Nigerian actor and comedian, Charles Inojie brought to light a plague that appears to have eaten into the fabric of the Nollywood industry. On a recent episode of OAP Nedu’s podcast, ‘The Johnson’s’ star pointed out that the Nigerian film industry has been polluted by a particular sect of ladies who used the profession of an actress to hide their uncouth means of making money.

Charles claimed that some of these ladies claimed to be award-winning actresses with no good movies in their catalogue. He asserted that all they do is sell their bodies and acquire big cars and mansions hiding under the umbrella of the movie profession when, in actual reality, they couldn’t make it past the audition stage.

Inojie added that the issue of sex-for-role in Nollywood is not perpetrated by just filmmakers but also some actresses who throw themselves at them to get movie roles.

“There are some actresses who can do anything just to be in front of the camera. And when you meet a character who is not properly formed as the director or producer, he will fall. So, there are actresses like that. The issue of sex-for-role is not just one-way. It is a two-way thing.

“There is also an army of Jezebel daughters looking for directors and producers to fall… So, the level of desperation among some of these girls is also an issue.
