  • Nigeria’s public debts rise by N9.43tr in three months, hit N97tr in Dec 2023, says DMO

DMO: Domestic debt servicing increased by over N247bn in 2017

Fresh data by the Debt Management Office (DMO) on Friday in Abuja showed that Nigeria’s public debt stock rose by N9.43tr in three months to hit N97.341 trillion as of Dec. 31, 2023.

The DMO said that the amount comprised domestic and external debt stocks of the federal government, the 36 state governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It said that the increase was largely due to new domestic borrowing by the federal government to part–finance the deficit in the 2024 budget and disbursements by multilateral and bilateral lenders.

“At N59.12 trillion, total domestic debt accounted for 61 per cent of the total public debt stock, while external debt at N38.22 trillion accounted for the balance of 39 per cent,” it said.

The DMO said that the country’s external debt stock was skewed in favour of loans from multilateral and bilateral lenders.

The debt office said the move was consistent with the country’s debt management strategy.

It said that loans from multilateral sources constituted 49.77 per cent of the country’s external debt stock, while loans from bilateral sources constituted 16.02 per cent.

“That is a total of 63.79 per cent, mostly concessional and semi-concessional loans.

“Whilst the DMO continues to employ best practice in public debt management, the recent and ongoing efforts of the authorities to shore up revenue will support debt sustainability.”

“While I admit that the Amotekun Corps is a respected organisation in its line of assignment but it is not included on the list of employers on our database. We only post to employers on our database.

  • Move to impeach Shaibu heats up as CJN constitutes panel to investigate Dep gov

The Edo State impeachment saga has gone a step forward with the Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, constituting a seven-member panel to investigate Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.

This follows a resolution passed by the State House of Assembly on March 19, 2024.

The Assembly had accused Shaibu of “gross misconduct,” including perjury and leaking government secrets. Following attempts to serve Shaibu with the impeachment notice, the Assembly directed the Chief Judge to form the investigative panel.

Shaibu had previously denied the allegations against him.

Justice Okungbowa has now constituted a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations levelled against Shaibu, by the state House of Assembly.

This is part of the processes initiated by the assembly to impeach the deputy governor.

The panel’s constitution. was made know on Friday via a statement, with reference number: CR/4837 /Vol. I/131, endorsed by the Chief Registrar of the Edo State High Court, B. O. Osawaru.

According to the statement, the panel is headed by a retired judge, Justice S.A. Omonua.

In the statement, the Chief Registrar stated that the CJ was acting in accordance with the powers vested on him by Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution.

The statement read, “This is to bring to the notice of the general public that in line with Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Honourable Chief Judge of Edo State, Honourable Justice D. I. Okungbowa, has constituted the panel of seven persons to investigate the allegations contained in the impeachment notice against the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu.

“The said panel of seven persons is comprised of the following persons: Hon. Justice S.A. Omonua (retd.) – Chairman, Professor Violet Aigbokhaebo- member, Professor Boniface Onomion Edegbai -member, Professor Theresa Akpoghome – member, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu – member, Andrew Oliha- member and Idris Abdulkareen- member.”

This development marks a significant escalation in the political rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki. The specific details of the accusations and the evidence presented remain unclear.

Shaibu retains the right to defend himself before the panel. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining whether the impeachment proceedings continue. If the panel finds merit in the allegations, the Assembly could then vote on whether to remove Shaibu from office.

This situation is likely to be closely monitored in the coming weeks as Nigerians await the panel’s findings and the potential next steps in the Edo State impeachment drama.

  • I Want To Marry Tall Girl, Says 29-Year-Old Height Challenged Man

Popoola Babatunde is 29 years old but stands at 3.5 feet! When standing beside anyone of average height, his head will barely reach below the hips.

This physical condition has limited his ability to do things normal human beings do, but he doesn’t see it as a handicap.

Babatunde, who is a university graduate, told THE WHISTLER in an interview that some simple house chores can be challenging for him. “The challenges I face are basically house chores, like drying clothes, turning on the fan, changing light switches among others,” he said.

He however has no problems getting his cloth sizes in the market as he wears children’s clothes.

“But the only problem I have is that the clothes are costly. Some of my shoes are being made directly from my shoe makers.”

Because of his size and height, he was subjected to bullying as a child. “People used to call me all sorts of names like short man, short boy, and I normally get angry,” he revealed.

But as he grew up, he became less bothered by those who call him names, and it made him more popular with people.

Babatunde said his height and attitude to people have made him popular and attractive to many people who come across him, especially ladies.

He said ladies love him and no girl has ever turned down his proposal for friendship.

“I’ve been keeping girlfriends since my university days. I’ve never approached a girl and asked her out and she turned me down, it has never happened.

“In most cases they (girls) are the ones approaching me,” he said.

    Amazing Hobbies

Although Babatunde is yet to get a job since concluding his national youth service last year, he enjoys luxury hobbies such as driving fast cars, riding bikes, especially rubber bikes, and playing football.

“Nobody taught me how to drive, it was just self-confidence and all that. I normally pull the seat front and focus,” he said, with a smile.

The height-challenged man also loves acting, and has acted in a movie.

“I like to act, I’m a content creator. I’m into movies and have acted in one Nigerian movie titled ‘Show Me Love’.

It was acted in Delta state, Asaba, with the likes of Lord Frank, Prince Ugo and others. So, I have this passion for acting and I act with passion,” he stated.

Babatunde’s mother is from Niger State while his father is from Oyo State. But neither of his parents are short.

“My mum told me that it was my great grandfather that I resembled, that I’m even taller than him.

“I don’t have any of my siblings like me. All of them are taller than me,” he said.

But he hopes to one day get married to a tall lady.

“I love picking tall girls because I always have this mindset that if I eventually marry a short girl I may end up giving birth to my type,” he said.

  • Properties you should never consider buying

All over the world, investment is not easy. As lucrative as real estate is, it takes a lot of financing. Now, after investing financial resources heavily, it will be unfair to invest in properties you should never buy in the first place.

When considering purchasing property in Nigeria, it’s essential to be mindful of certain factors to avoid making potentially problematic investments.

I will highlight the properties you should never buy in this article:

    1. Properties with Unresolved Legal Issues:

Ensure that the property you’re interested in has clear and undisputed legal ownership. Avoid properties entangled in legal disputes, land boundary issues, or lacking proper documentation. Purchasing such properties can lead to prolonged legal battles or even loss of ownership rights.

    2. Properties in High-Risk Areas:

Certain areas in Nigeria may be prone to natural disasters like flooding or erosion, or they may have a high crime rate. Investing in properties in such areas can pose significant risks to your safety and the value of your investment. Always conduct thorough research on the neighborhood’s safety and vulnerability to natural disasters before buying.

    3. Properties with Structural Defects:

Inspect any property you’re considering purchasing thoroughly for structural integrity. Avoid properties with visible signs of damage, such as cracks in the walls, foundation issues, or poor construction quality. Investing in structurally compromised properties can result in costly repairs and compromise the safety of occupants.

    4. Properties with Uncertain Development Plans:

Before buying property, inquire about the development plans for the surrounding area. Investing in areas without clear development prospects or with uncertain infrastructure plans can hinder your property’s appreciation potential. Additionally, consider factors like accessibility, amenities, and potential future developments that could impact the property’s value.

    5. Properties with Environmental Hazards:

Be cautious of properties located near industrial sites, waste disposal areas, or contaminated land. Exposure to environmental hazards can pose health risks to occupants and devalue the property over time. Conduct environmental assessments or seek expert advice to identify any potential risks associated with pollution or contamination before making a purchase.

    6. Properties with Outstanding Liabilities:

Before finalizing a property purchase, ensure there are no outstanding debts or unpaid taxes associated with the property. Buying a property with unresolved financial liabilities can lead to unexpected financial burdens or legal complications. Request clearance certificates and conduct thorough financial due diligence to avoid such situations.

    7. Properties with Incomplete or Illegal Structures:

Avoid purchasing properties with unapproved or illegal structures, such as extensions, additional floors, or encroachments. Such structures may violate building regulations and could be subject to demolition orders by the government authorities. Invest in properties with all structures properly permitted and constructed in compliance with local building codes.

    8. Properties in Disputed or Unstable Regions:

Nigeria, like many countries, may have regions marked by ethnic, religious, or political tensions. Investing in properties located in areas prone to conflicts or instability can expose you to safety risks and potential property damage. Research the political and social climate of the region before considering any property purchase.

    9. Properties with Poor Access to Basic Utilities:

Ensure that the property you’re interested in has access to essential utilities such as electricity, water, sewage systems, and internet connectivity. Properties lacking access to these basic amenities can significantly diminish their livability and resale value. Verify the reliability and adequacy of utility services in the area before making a purchase.

    10. Properties in Declining or Oversaturated Markets:

Avoid investing in properties in markets experiencing declining demand or oversupply. Buying property in such markets can lead to difficulty finding tenants or buyers, resulting in prolonged vacancies or reduced rental income. Conduct market research to assess the demand-supply dynamics and potential for growth in the property market before committing to any purchase.
