  • Gov Adeleke Sets Up Cyber Crime Action Committee To Tackle Fake News In Osun

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has expressed grave concerns over the rampant spread of fake news targeting his government and opposition parties in the state.

Determined to address this issue, he has established a Cyber Crime Action Committee to enforce relevant provisions of the law regarding cybercrime, cyberbullying, and deliberate online false news.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, Adeleke stated that this step is necessary to sanitize the governance space and ensure that political discourse and governance occur within an atmosphere of responsibility, decency, and honesty.

The statement emphasized that “the increasing wave of fake news negatively affects both the government and the opposition and that it is high time all operators are brought within the compass of the law in the exercise of their rights as guaranteed by the constitution.

The committee, housed within the Ministry of Justice, comprises journalists and legal practitioners tasked with ensuring that fake news is promptly addressed, regardless of the perpetrators.

Alimi stressed that the committee would apply relevant sections of the Cybercrime Act of 2015 as operational clauses to ensure all stakeholders operate within the law while exercising and enjoying their fundamental human rights.

Section 24 (1) of the Cybercrime Act, 2015 reads: “A person who knowingly or intentionally sends a message or other matter by means of computer systems or network that is grossly offensive, pornographic or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character or causes any such message or matter to be sent, or he knows to be false, for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will or needless anxiety to another or causes such a message to be sent, commits an offence under this Act and is liable on conviction to a fine of not more than N7,000, 000.00 or imprisonment for a term, not more than three years or both”

The commissioner disclosed that the committee would hold its inaugural meeting on Monday, reaffirming Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to good governance, due process, rule of law, and fear of God.

I hope every time you ej@culate it turns into water - X users drag Nigerian man over vile post shaming pregnant Nigerian women

A Nigerian man, Franklin, has come under fire for shaming pregnant Nigerian women, calling them dirty, unkept and gluttonous.

The man had commented on a video of a pregnant foreign woman, asking why Nigerian women don’t “maintain their beauty during pregnancy.”

“How come her nose is not big? How come her skin is glowing? How come she doesn’t have breakout? Why is her hair neat? How come she’s still maintaining beauty? Nigerian women lied to us man. You people are just dirty, unkempt with useless cravings. Take care of your body glutton,” he wrote.

Reacting to his post post, which has shockingly garnered over 7000 Likes and RTs, Nigerians, South Africans and other Africans dragged the man, calling him an evil and vile person who don’t deserve to witness the joy of fatherhood.

“Procreating with men from that green and white flag country just looks like an act of self-hate,” a South African woman wrote.

“You don’t deserve a woman getting pregnant for you. It’s never twitter bants. You’re a vile and evil person,” another wrote.

I hope every time you ejaculate it turns to water and if one manages to survive it’s allergic to the egg. I simply hope no woman ever gets pregnant for him. And if one does. He finds out 16 years later that it’s not his because he’s been shooting blanks all his life,” one Jasmine wrote.

  • Defence Headquarters Says It Rescued 137 Nigerian Schoolchildren Kidnapped From Kaduna Schools In Neighbouring Zamfara, Not 287

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has said that schoolchildren abducted in Kaduna on March 7, 2024, were rescued in Zamfara State.

It however gave the number of those rescued as 137 and not 287 reportedly kidnapped when terrorists invaded LEA School in Kuriga.

The schoolchildren, aged five to 18 were abducted on Thursday, March 7 from the Kuriga primary and secondary schools in the state and the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N1 billion for their release.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu had said that no dime would be paid by his administration to kidnappers.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State on Sunday gave the impression that all the abducted schoolchildren had been released, saying, “In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Most Merciful, I wish to announce that our Kuriga school children have been released.

“Our special appreciation goes to our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for prioritizing the safety and security of Nigerians and particularly ensuring that the abducted Kuriga school children are released unharmed.

“While the school children were in captivity, I spoke with Mr. President several times. He shared our pains, comforted us and worked round the clock with us to ensure the safe return of the children.

“Special mention must also be made of our dear brother, the National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu for his exemplary leadership. I spent sleepless nights with Mal. Ribadu finetuning strategies and coordinating the operations of the security agencies, which eventually resulted in this successful outcome.

“The Nigerian Army also deserves special commendation for showing that with courage, determination and commitment, criminal elements can be degraded and security restored in our communities.

“We also thank all Nigerians who prayed fervently for the safe return of the school children. This is indeed a day of joy. We give Almighty Allah all the glory.”

But the defence headquarters in its statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen. Edward Buba on Sunday said 76 females and 67 males were rescued in Zamfara State.

It said, “It would be recalled that, on March 7, 2024, troops received information that terrorists had invaded LEA School Kuriga in Chikun LG of Kaduna State During the incident, unconfirmed number of pupils were abducted. Following the incident, the military committed to leaving no stone unturned until all the hostages were rescued.

“Accordingly, in the early hours of March 24, 2024, the military, working with local authorities and government agencies across the country, in a coordinated search and rescue operation, rescued the hostages.

“The hostages are the same persons that were abducted from the school at Kuriga in Chikun LGA of Kaduna State.

“The rescued hostages totalling 137 comprise of 76 females and 61 males were rescued in Zamfara State and would be conveyed and handed over to the Kaduna State Government for further action.”

It said its efforts demonstrate the “armed forces’ resolve to find other innocent hostages and track down the terrorists that perpetrated these crimes”.

“These efforts would continue until other hostages are found and the terrorists arrested, tried, and brought to justice by Nigerian law.

“Troops are employing similar efforts to track down the culprits responsible for the killings of 18 soldiers in Okuama Community in Delta State,” it added.

  • NASS REPUBLIC: As Northern Senators decry insecurity. Two other stories, and a quote to remember

Senate Confirms 11 Supreme Court Justices

The Northern Senators’ Forum, last week, decried the never-ending insecurity in the northern region of the country.

Two other stories from the National Assembly (NASS), were also reviewed for your reading delight.

    1.As northern senators decry insecurity

On March 21, Senators from the Northern region expressed deep concern on the rising violence, killings, and kidnappings that have terrorised communities in the region.

The Senators, who bared their minds in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, demanded urgent action that would end the upsurge in the attacks.

“We are committed to pursuing a lasting solution to this menace. We will not rest until the security situation is significantly improved and the perpetrators of these heinous acts are brought to justice…,” the statement reads partly.

Beyond the seeming concerns expressed by the Senators, the discourse, once again, points to the failure of leadership and highlights the country’s struggle with festering insecurity.

The recent statement credited to Northern Senators might, therefore, just be another poor attempt at currying favour or burnishing their sagging images before their respective constituents.

While this is so, it, however, calls attention to what may have been left undone by President Bola Tinubu. This appears a convenient route to follow, and this is because the buck stops on the President’s table.

    NASS MEMORY LANE

    Who said;

“So, talking about the salaries of the National Assembly, it is a far cry from what it is supposed to be. And I can assure you that even if we reduce it by 50 per cent or 80 per cent, it will not really impact what the Nigerian lawmakers should be earning, which does not go in tandem with the economic situation of the country.”

    Answer: See end of post

    Two other stories

    2. Abass’ assurance for Tinubu

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abass, on March 20, assured that the NASS will pass any bill President Tinubu will bring.

READ ALSO:NASS REPUBLIC: Slashing salaries of lawmakers. Two other stories, and a quote to remember

Abass made this known while speaking during a dinner hosted by the President for over 60 members of the House of Representatives to break Ramadan fast.

“The House has always supported what you do and we shall continue to strive in ensuring that we operate as one – the executive and the legislature together. We want to ensure that whatever you bring will see the light of the day, both in the House of Representatives and in the Senate,” the Speaker asserted.

Abass’ pledge has the potential of creating doubt on the readiness of lawmakers to assert their independence, while making a mess of the principle of checks and balances which beautifies democracy.

Indeed, it draws immediate attention to longtime claims that the National Assembly has become a rubber stamp institution kowtowing to the whims and caprices of the executive arm of government.

So, while a harmonious relationship is encouraged between Tinubu, and the lawmakers, jettisoning a constitutional risks taking the country steps backward.

    3. Can Tinubu discontinue Kanu’s trial?

Some members of the House of Representatives from the South East region led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, on March 19, called on President Tinubu to invoke Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to discontinue the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The call was sequel to Justice Binta Nyako’s dismissal of Kanu’s bail application.
“That bail application, if granted, would have brought an opportunity to open doors for discussion to bring about peace in the South East”
“It is also painful for us that this bail application was rejected and we hope that President Tinubu will do the needful by discontinuing the matter,” Ugochinyere averred.

The position of the lawmakers as expressed by Ugochinyere, once again, serves as a reminder to the socio-economic unrest which had taken over the South-East due to Kanu’s continued detention.

The call subtly presents to Tinubu, arguably, the major option he has to restore peace in the region.

However, can Tinubu discontinue Kanu’s trial, and set him free? Would some sections of the country not revolt, if he explores the option? Or, is Tinubu going to insist that Kanu goes through the entire litigation process as former President Muhammadu Buhari had maintained?
Nigerians are keenly watching!

    Answer: Hon. Benjamin Kalu

Kalu made the statement on February 26, 2024, during an interview with Channels Television. He is the current Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • Govt officials make N800m anytime IPOB leader, Kanu, appears in court, family claims

    Nnamdi-Kanu

The family of incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has raised an alarm over an alleged N800 million being used by the Nigerian government as cost of bringing the Biafran agitator to court any time he is to make an appearance.

A statement on Saturday by spokesman for the family, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, said it would like to know those benefiting from the money the government allegedly spends to prosecute Kanu.

Prince Emmanuel added that the family was worried that some corrupt individuals were benefiting from Kanu’s situation and as such, the possibility of releasing him from the custody of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) looked bleak.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has finally become a money-minting venture for a few corrupt individuals in the corridors of power.

“We heard that government spends N800 million each time he is brought to court. Then, we want to know who the beneficiaries of the said money are?”

The family also called for the release of Kanu from detention over his deteriorating health.

READ ALSO:Nnamdi Kanu to face expedited treason trial, as judge throws out bail request

The Kanu family, in a related statement, said the Biafran agitator is critically ill and may die if he is not released to undergo adequate medical treatment.

The statement noted that Kanu who has been in detention since he was arrested and extradited from Kenya in 2021, urgently needs to see a cardiologist as he is currently suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular system.

According to the statement, the pro-Biafra agitator needs urgent medical attention to avert a major health crisis.

“We got information this morning that he is critically down. He has not been granted access to his personal doctors, and he urgently needs a cardiologist. He should not be allowed to die in DSS custody.

“Kanu is terribly sick and nobody cares. His health is deteriorating every day. He has not changed his clothes. Why has the court continued to hold him in DSS custody instead of the Correctional Centre?

“It’s a shame that Kanu is being punished for asking for the freedom of Ndigbo, and the leaders have abandoned him to die in DSS custody,” the statement said.
