  • More troubles for Abure, as LP founders ask him to resign

There seems to be no respite for the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, as the founders of the party, Trade Union Veterans (TUV), on Sunday, asked him to resign.

Lamenting that allegations of fraud against the chairman have greatly dented the image of the Party, they accused Abure of refusing to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) brokered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and signed by all stakeholders but preferred to sideline the Board of Trustees headed by Comrade Ejiofoh and all those who laboured tirelessly to get Labour Party registered because of his hidden agenda which had now come to the open

TUV members include the pioneer President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the 2nd President of the NLC, Comrade Ali Chiroma, the pioneer General Secretary of the Congress, Comrade Aliyu Dangiwa, the 2nd National Treasurer of the NLC, Comrade S. O. Oshidipe.

Others are Comrade S. O. Z Ejiofoh, the Board of Trustees Chairman and pioneer Chairman of Labour Party, Comrade Lawson Osagie Esq, Comrade Salisu Mohammed, all of whom were the main actors in the formation and registration of Labour Party.

In a statement in Lagos by Lawson Osagie, TUV lamented that the noble ideals that prompted the formation of the LP to free Nigerian people from decades of bad governance are being desecrated by the leadership of the party.

The statement said: “We cannot sit down and continue to watch as the ideals, principles, and ethical values of Labour Party we toiled so much to build over the decades are being rubbished by one man.

“Consequently, we urge Abure to step aside now as the National Chairman of Labour Party and in his place, the Board of Trustees should appoint a Caretaker National Chairman that will organize Congresses in the States before the National Convention can be convened.”

TUV members also stressed the need for the Board of Trustees under the Chairmanship of Comrade Ejiofoh to be enlarged to accommodate representatives of the new stakeholders namely Mr. Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti, and the Labour Party Legislative Caucus, saying: “This body will be charged with the implementation in spirit and letter of the MOU referred to earlier.”

They noted that the Supreme Court under Justice Uwais ruled long ago that workers have the right to form a political party to defend and promote their interest, noting “How then can any well-read and informed lawyer say that NLC has no business in politics or is a meddlesome interloper in the affairs of Labour Party formed by the Trade Unions themselves.

“For the benefit of those who want to know, the 2009 Constitution of the Labour Party in which NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC Presidents, and Secretaries are made statutory members of National Executive Council, NEC, of LP were the input and contribution by the Edo State Council of LP and Julius Abure was Secretary of the subcommittee on the Review of the Constitution while Comrade Lawson Osagie was the Chairman and a Benin-based legal practitioner, Adams Aliyu was also a member.”

According to them, “Abure’s current rhetoric about the role and place of NLC in the LP is not only disappointing but embarrassing to the culture of comradeship and solidarity of the trajectory and historical perspective of the labour movement in general and LP in particular.

“Those attacking the Presidents of NLC including the current one, Comrade Joe Ajaero for defending the ethical values of the founding fathers of LP now being desecrated by Abure are not informed or knowledgeable in the hierarchical structure or organs of the NLC and how decisions are made.

“No individual takes decisions at the NLC. It must go through organs such as the National Administrative Council, NAC, the Central Working Committee, CWC, and the NEC. This is the old tradition which is still followed and respected religiously because NLC is a democratic organization in which power resides in organs and not in an office.

“Abure has refused to implement the MOU brokered by INEC and signed by all stakeholders but prefers to sideline the Board of Trustees headed by Comrade Ejiofoh and all those who laboured tirelessly to get Labour Party registered because of his hidden agenda which had now come to the open.

“The Labour Party was recommended by the then Political Bureau set up by General Ibrahim Babaginda (rtd) during his transition as the 6th Political Party to be registered but the process was scuttled when General Babaginda opted to form the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and the National Republican Convention, NRC.

“The struggle to form the Labour Party continued until it was eventually registered as Party for Social Democracy Party, SDP, and after the NEC meeting in Bauchi in 2001, the name of the Party was changed to Labour Party.”

The crowd, largely women, old and young, married, unmarried and divorcees had gathered at the Jos road headquarters of the Company as early as 7am on Sunday for the distribution of the Zakaat items.

It was reliably gathered that the exercise started smoothly as the beneficiaries were called in in groups to receive the items until the others became restless and apprehensive leading to a struggle to get in to the main premises.

In the process, a stampade ensued as the women tried to force themselves inside and in the process, many of them fell on the ground and were trampled upon leading to the casualties.

  • Atiku, Obi Speak On Release Of Kaduna School Children, Call For Strengthening Of Safe School Initiative

    Atiku-Abubakar-at-Lagos-Business-School-

Presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have expressed delight in the release of the Kaduna School children.

The children who were abducted from secondary and primary schools in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State when armed men stormed the school abducting over 200 on March 7 regained freedom in the early hours of Sunday.

Atiku in a statement said he is elated at the news of the release of the abducted school children in Kaduna, who were held for 16 days.

“I commend all those who worked tirelessly to make their release a reality,” he said advising that, “As we celebrate with their families and friends, let’s be mindful that, like stage four cancer, this state of insecurity that has befallen our nation is metastasising and needs proactive measures to stem it.

“I can only imagine the trauma that these vulnerable children have suffered. It is recommended that the children receive psychotherapy care by professionals.

“We also do not need to wait for the next incident before putting mechanisms in place to forestall it.

“To this end, I recommend the strengthening of the Safe School Initiative that prioritises the protection of schools, especially in the areas that are most vulnerable to mass kidnap of school children.

“But above all, there should be an overhaul of the security architecture to meet the demands of the threats facing us,” Atiku said.

Obi on his part said, “It is comforting to hear that 287 school children abducted in Kaduna have been released. It is hard to imagine the mental pain and trauma the children must have gone through in the hands of their abductors.

“The report of their release is, however, reassuring to the nation and their parents. I thank the government, the security agencies, and all those who made immense efforts to see that our children are released from captivity and reunited with their families.

“Efforts should also be made, not just to release many of our people in the different kidnappers’ dens across the country, but to end the scourge of insecurity completely.

“We must ensure that every Nigerian is safe in Nigeria, by not giving terrorists any operating space in our nation. No Nigerian should ever be a captive or hostage anywhere in his fatherland.”

The former Anambra State Governor encouraged “every Nigerian, in the midst of these dark and fearful nights in our nation where danger seems to be lurking on every corner, to remain hopeful for the new dawn of a secure and safe nation – the New Nigeria which is POssible.”

  • Those who want the Naira to be N400 to the Dollar are living in a dream world — Former CBN deputy governor, Kingsley Moghalu, says

Those who want the Naira to be N400 to the Dollar are living in a dream world ? Former CBN deputy governor, Kingsley Moghalu, says

Kingsley Moghalu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has said that those who want the Naira to be N400 to the Dollar are living in a dream world.

Taking to his X account, Moghalu explained that the exchange rate should reflect its market value in reality.

He claimed that Godwin Emefiele’s era at the Central Bank created artificiality that it sought to maintain to please economic illiterates in political power at the time.

He stated that the artificiality created room for massive arbitrage by speculators which bled the economy.

He suggested that the sooner the country focused on the creation of value-added manufacturing export economy that earned forex beyond oil in real and significant terms, the better.

He wrote: “Those who want the Naira to be N400 to the $ are living in a dream world. Even discounting for the negative impact of speculative attacks on the value of the Naira, the exchange rate will (and should) reflect its market value in reality, not the artificiality that the Emefiele era central bank sought to maintain to please economic illiterates in political power at the time.

“That artificiality created room for massive arbitrage by speculators which bled the economy. Nigeria does not (yet) have a productive export economy. That’s the heart of the matter.

“And we do not have $100 billion in foreign reserves. So on what basis would the Naira forex rate return to some fantasy land soon? It will also take time to regain or achieve full investor confidence such as we had when we were there (and the rate was N150-165 to the $.

“The sooner we focus on a painstaking creation of value-added manufacturing export economy that earns forex beyond oil in real and significant terms, the better. Key to this is the electricity conundrum in which we are at less than 4,000 megawatts of generation for a population of 200 million for decades now.

“Take power to even 20K megawatts (let’s not talk of 50K for South Africa’s 60 million population or Brazil’s 181K megawatts for a population only slightly larger than Nigeria) and you will see what the Nigerian entrepreneurial spirit is capable of.”
