  • CBN To Speed Up Recapitalisation Exercise For Banks

    cbn-office

The Monetary Policy Committee has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria to fast-track the preparations for the proposed recapitalisation exercise of banks.

The MPC gave the charge at the 294th meeting held to review economic and financial developments.

The bank gave the first hint of a possible recapitalisation exercise last year when the floating of the currency slashed the dollar value of capitalisation of banks in Africa’s largest economy.

The planned recapitalisation will also help in supporting the proposed $1tn economy.

The CBN Governor, however, reopened the debate asking banks to speed up actions to meet up with the exercise, which is still being planned.

The CBN governor said, “The Committee thus, called on the Bank to sustain its surveillance and ensure compliance of banks with existing regulatory and macroprudential guidelines.

“The MPC also enjoined the bank to expedite action on the recapitalisation of banks to strengthen the system against potential risks in an increasingly globalized world.”

Although no date has been given for the exercise, a recent report by Ernst and Young estimates that 17 out of 24 banks might not meet the capital requirement from the CBN if it is increased 15-fold from its current N25bn.

The report suggested that the recent plan to increase the capital base of banks may lead to series of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) just like it happened during the last recapitalisation exercise in 2004/2005.

Ernst and Young said, “While the CBN governor gave no indication as to the magnitude of the proposed hike in the capital base, we have assumed what the proposed increment will be based on three different scenarios underpinned on current macroeconomic conditions. On the back of that, we were able to determine the number of banks (across the three licence types) that may fall below the new minimum capital thresholds.

“In a worst-case scenario, i.e., given a capital multiplier of 15, about 17 out of 24 banks would not meet the new minimum capital.”

The N25bn capital base in 2005 was an equivalent of $188.2m but the figure has plunged significantly to about $18.4m.

Police arrest vigilante for burning suspected thief to death in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a vigilante, Adekunle Agunbiade, for allegedly burning a suspected thief to death in the Itire area of the state.

It was gathered that the victim was earlier arrested and handed over to the vigilante for allegedly vandalising a car parked on Shonde Street, Itire, with the aim to steal from it.

Spokesman of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

“Around 5am on Tuesday a distress call was received from a resident that thieves came to their street and vandalised his car,” the PPRO said.

“He claimed that after raising alarm, one of the thieves was arrested and handed over to the vigilante in charge of the street, Adekunle Ogunbiade

“The complaint further stated that he was shocked to later learn that the thief had been set ablaze instead of handing him over to the police.

  • NCC insists on Friday deadline to disconnect all registered SIMs without proper NIN linkage

Nigeria’s Telecommunications industry regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has insisted on disconnecting millions of telephone users without proper linkage of their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their SIM cards by Friday, March 29, 2024.

The NCC has mandated all telcos in the country to disconnect all phone lines of subscribers who have not linked their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their SIM cards.

The disconnections are set to take place on Friday, March 29,2024, following a directive from the NCC mandating all registered SIMs without proper NIN linkage to be either corrected or completely disconnected from networks.

The NIN-SIM Linkage process, which began on February 28, 2024, is part of the government’s initiative to combat criminal activities such as banditry and kidnapping, ultimately bolstering national security.

There are hints of a potential third phase in April 2024.

Operators have reportedly collaborated with the NCC in implementing the directive, demonstrating their dedication to national security objectives and ensuring full compliance by the specified deadlines.

The second phase will target subscribers with five or more SIMs from a single operator that lack verified NIN-SIM linkages.

The third phase, scheduled to start on April 15, will focus on subscribers with four SIMs or fewer and unverified NINs.

While telecoms companies are advocating for a review and extension of the April deadline for the third phase, indications from the NCC suggest a firm commitment to the established timelines.

The first phase resulted in the barring of 40 million lines, including approximately 17 million active SIMs without NIN submissions and 23 million inactive SIMs lacking NINs over the past year.

A body has reportedly been discovered during the search for six missing construction workers who fell into the river when the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed.

“We are hearing one body was found,” Baltimore City Council Member Phylicia Porter said on CNN.

The bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning, Feb. 26, after a ship collided with it, leaving vehicles submerged and bridge construction workers missing.

Footage shows rescue teams searching the Patapsco River in the aftermath of the bridge collapse. Teams can be seen pointing flashlights around the murky waters as they search for those missing in the catastrophe.

Five vehicles are currently submerged in the river, with six construction workers unaccounted for who had been working on the bridge when it went down.

Maryland authorities are using sonar to search for people who fell into the 47F water as they were working to repair potholes on the 185-foot bridge when it collapsed.

Officials have since said they have spotted five vehicles underwater thanks to infrared and side-scan sonar technology – three passenger vehicles, a cement truck and a fifth vehicle.

Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency Tuesday morning following the catastrophic collision, which occurred at about 1.30am. The ship was 20 minutes into its journey when it slammed into a support column on the bridge. Moore said the ship’s crew managed to issue a ‘mayday’ before it crashed into the bridge, which allowed officials to stop cars from going on the bridge.

“We’re thankful that between the ‘mayday’ and collapse that-that we had officials who were able to begin the stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not up on the bridge,” Moore added.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said eight people were on the bridge when it collapsed, and two of them were rescued from the water, with one declining medical treatment and the other being taken to the hospital.

Wiedefeld said: “We know there were individuals on the bridge at the time of the collapse, working on the bridge, contractors for us.”

He said the workers were “basically doing some concrete deck repair”, but said they did not know how many vehicles were involved.

  • Amotekun dismisses 3 officers for misconduct in Ondo

    operation Amotekun

The South-West security network, Amotekun, has dismissed three of its officers in Ondo State for professional misconduct.

The State Commander of Amotekun Corps, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this when he paraded seven suspects for human trafficking and housebreaking before journalists on Tuesday in Akure.

Adeleye said the three dismissed officers would be prosecuted in line with the regulations guiding the corps.

He said: “Today, we have three Amotekun personnel that had gone through the normal process of court marshal and are being dismissed today for professional misconduct.

“They cease to be members of Amotekun Ondo State Corp as from now and we would ensure that adequate punishment would be meted out to them even after dismissal.”

The commander, who called for credible information from residents, said a vehicle stolen by armed bandits around the Akure community had been recovered by the operatives.

He added that electronic equipment also stolen from a resident of the community was recovered and efforts are ongoing to arrest those behind the acts.

“Out of the seven suspects we are parading today, we have three that were arrested for human trafficking cases and we have four others that were arrested for housebreaking.

“And we were able to retrieve all the items stolen from their operation, which would be handed over to the rightful owners.

“However, this is to reconfirm that the response to distress calls is actually working for us to reduce crime to the minimum,” he stated.

EFCC, NFVCB Join Forces against Criminal Content in Videos

EFCC, NFVCB Join Forces against Criminal Content in Videos

The Executive Chairman of the Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on the National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, to continually work against glamourisation of internet fraud and mutilation of currencies in films and movies meant for the public.

He made the call when the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, CEO of the Board, Dr. Shuaibu Hussaini and his team paid him a courtesy visit at the corporate headquarters of the Commission.

According to him, films, videos and movies are meant to promote good moral standards and encourage accountable conduct in the society and the NFVCB should step up its censorship roles in achieving this. “We believe we have the right partner with you. Films and videos are meant to promote good moral standards. Your Board should continue to discourage glamourisation of crimes in the film industry”, he said.

He charged the Board to team up with the Commission in fighting corrupt practices, maintaining that, “the work of fighting corruption is for all of us”. He particularly frowned at undue demonization of the EFCC by skit makers through false characterization of the works of the Commission. “There are several skits flying around with an untrue portrayal of the EFCC and its officers. The NFVCB should look into this and stop such unprofessional practices”, he said.

Earlier in his opening remark, Hussaini said the Board was in the EFCC to seek robust collaboration with the Commission. He also said that the Board was working hard against the glamorization of crimes in films and videos.

“We are trying as much as possible to discourage the glamourization of crimes in our movies. We are also trying to eliminate all those things movie makers are putting in their works that will make young people jump into schemes that are criminal in real life. In doing this, we are starting from script writers, then the producers because the producers are the ones who supervised the contents”, he said.

He frowned at the activities of skit makers discrediting the works of the EFCC by creating contents that do not reflect the real operations of the Commission and called for more enlightenment of Nigerians to support the EFCC. “We are not only editing films but also enlightening the people. Crimes are damaging to the society. The NFVCB will continue its strategic collaboration with the EFCC to achieve its mandate”, he said.
