  • Hardship: Dangote Gives Lagos 80,000 10kg Bags Of Rice

    Dangote-Gives-Lagos-80000-10kg-Bags-Of-Rice

The Aliko Dangote Foundation on Wednesday gave the Lagos State government 80,000 10 kilogrammes bags of rice for immediate distribution to various segments of the vulnerable population across the state.

The intervention was part of the Foundation’s ongoing rollout of one million bags of 10kg rice to vulnerable families across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, with Lagos taking the second largest share of the largesse.

The donation is expected to bolster the state’s interventions aimed at ameliorating the impacts of current hardship on vulnerable households in the state.

The state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who personally received the rice described the gesture as an “extreme act of kindness”.

He noted that Dangote had always stood out as a “unique breed of citizen” enamoured with love and compassion for the downtrodden.

“For extending this gesture of love and kindness to the needy and vulnerable people in the country, Alhaji Dangote has shown that he is a Nigerian that has chosen to be different. The trait of Dangote’s humanity is not just living in his body; he has, by this huge intervention, openly demonstrated the trait of human kindness he possesses in no small measure.

“The donation of 80,000 units of 10kg bags of rice demonstrates that philosophy of the Foundation. This is extending empathy to those in need of little assistance in these difficult times. This direct intervention translates to compassion and goes beyond the pursuit of only profit and wealth. This is a period the Government and private sector need to take joint action to ameliorate the pains being experienced by citizens due to inflation,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu said the supplies would shore up the state-led interventions and help to alleviate the food shortage caused by inflation.

According to him, Lagos would be distributing 100,000 combo boxes of food items to thousands of households free of charge, urging private organisations to emulate the Dangot’s gesture and support the ongoing efforts by the state to ramp up its interventions.

He said: “We have also secured 100,000 units of combo food packs for distribution to various segments of vulnerable communities in the State. We are finalising the logistics for the delivery. This is in addition to the weekly supply of discounted food items to various community markets.

“We embark on these initiatives in order to accommodate and assist the majority of the population cope in this period. I thank Lagosians for their patience and demonstration of resilience despite the challenges we are all passing through. When we work together, we will come out of this situation better and stronger.”

The Chairman of Aliko Dangote Group and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who was accompanied by his billionaire associate, Mr. Femi Otedola, and daughter, Ms. Fatimah Dangote, to fulfil the corporate social responsibility, said as part of the Foundation’s intervention, 200,000 metric tons of rice has been reserved for distribution across the 774 Local Government Areas in the country.

He said: “We recognise that the current circumstances where a significant number of Nigerians are experiencing hardship due to prevailing food prices inflation requires that we, the Dangote Foundation, provide succour for those affected. That is why we have reserved 200,000 metric tons of rice for distribution across 774 Local Government Areas in the country.”

    (14) Minister of Marine and Blue Economy

The Chairman of the EMT may, as needed, call on any Federal Minister or Head of Agency to brief the EMT on key programmes and developments affecting the economy.

The President’s formation of the PECC, under his Chairmanship, alongside the creation of the EET, led by the Chairman of the EMT, and the EMT itself, is the manifestation of a unified strategy aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s economic management architecture for verifiably improved performance. The formation of these teams will complement existing economic governance structures, including the National Economic Council (NEC), which is chaired by the Vice-President.

Over the next six months, the EET will focus on the rapid implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of critical initiatives, strengthening the Tinubu-led administration’s collective approach to advancing Nigeria’s economic objectives.

  • ‘Abure’s Re-election An Illegality’— NLC

L-R NLC President, Joe Ajaero, Labour Party logo

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday described the re-election of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) as a “charade.”

The Congress said that the authenticity of his position cannot be upheld as two separate court rulings in 2024 nullified the legitimacy of Abure’s National Working Committee (NWC).

However, Abure was relected at a convention held at the Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Speaking to THE WHISTLER the NLC Head of Information, Benson Upah, said, “Nothing can legitimise such brazen impunity!”.

The NLC has been advocating for Abure’s removal, accusing the LP chairman of attempting to hold an unauthorised national convention in Abia State to keep himself in office.

Reiterating the NLC position on the matter, Upah said, “It’s an illegality, a nullity. The whole exercise was a charade!”.

He further noted that the Congress will not accept an election that goes against the tenets of democracy.

Earlier the NLC had called for Abure’s resignation and the immediate constitution of a caretaker transition committee to organise a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention for the party.

Weighing in on the crisis, the former President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba said the Labour Party was formed by the NLC, based on a clear objective in the NLC constitution.

“Under Article 3 and Item 1, the major objective of the NLC is to promote, defend and advance the economic, political, and social rights and well-being of Nigerian workers and pensioners,” he stated.

He added, “We own the Labour Party; it was formed under the leadership of Pascal Bafyau, as the Party for Social Democracy. Under Adams (Oshiomhole), organs decided to change the name to the Labour Party, and the first chairman was S.O.Z Ejiofor who later handed over to Dan Anyanwu.

“So, the essence of forming the party is to make sure that workers, pensioners, farmers, can be able to have a platform to exercise their rights, which is enshrined in Section 40 of the Constitution.

“The party was formed by NLC, and registered by NLC. It’s like you built a house, you got a C-of-O, then you rented the apartment, so you must have an interest in how the property is managed.”

  • BREAKING: After Raking In Millions Of Naira From Applicants, Osun Government Fails To Hold Teachers’ Recruitment Exams, Leaves Many Stranded

The failure to hold the CBT exams is despite the millions of naira raked in by the Governor Ademola Adeleke-led state government as each applicant was made to pay N2000 for registration.

The Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the Osun State Government Teacher’s Recruitment Exercise did not hold as scheduled on Wednesday leaving thousands of applicants stranded across the various centers in the state, SaharaReporters has learnt.

The failure to hold the CBT exams is despite the millions of naira raked in by the Governor Ademola Adeleke-led state government as each applicant was made to pay N2000 for registration.

Some of the applicants at the Ilesa and Ede CBT centres told SaharaReporters that the Batches 1 to 4 slated for 8am to 11am could not write the exams and waited till 3pm, stranded and hungry without any explanation from the state officials.

The same situation was reported from centers in Osogbo, Ikire and Ile Ife.

“People have got here since as early as 7am. They told us the server is down and is from Osogbo. Are they not aware we are doing exams today? Didn’t we pay so they could make proper logistics available? This shows the disorganisation in the state Ministry of Education and the state government as a whole,” an applicant lamented in Osogbo.

At about 3pm, SaharaReporters learnt that the officials began to lock the CBT centres after no exams was held.

A release last Friday by M.A.K. Jimoh, the Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Education, had noted that the exams would start by 8am prompt but the situation on Wednesday proved the state government had lied.

He had said, “This is to inform the General Public, particularly applicants for the ongoing Osun State Teacher’s Recruitment Exercise that the CBT examination will hold between Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th March, 2024 at different Uniosun designated Centers.

“Applicants are also advised to come to their designated  with the printed examination slip. All exams starts by 8am prompt each day.”

  • Police in Ogun outlines measure for schools to curb kidnappings

In response to a recent spate of school kidnappings, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has called upon schools to implement stricter security measures. The Commissioner made the request during a security meeting held on Wednesday, which was part of the state’s Safe Schools Initiative.

Commissioner Alamutu emphasized the importance of physical security measures, urging schools to “ensure that access to the school premises is strictly controlled and regulated.” This includes actions such as:

    • Perimeter Fencing: The erection of perimeter fencing around school grounds to restrict unauthorized access.

    • CCTV Cameras: Installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations throughout the school to monitor activity.

    • Designated Entry/Exit Points: Limiting access points to the school grounds and establishing clear procedures for entry and exit.

The Commissioner also stressed the importance of vigilance and awareness among staff, students, and parents. He encouraged schools to develop a system for visitor registration and require proper identification from all non-student visitors entering the school.

“Promoting safety awareness and vigilance among students, teachers and staff” is crucial, Commissioner Alamutu stated. He urged schools to develop a system for reporting “any strange conduct or behaviour observed from among themselves to the school authority for prompt response.”

These measures are intended to deter potential kidnappers and improve the overall safety of students within Ogun State schools. The recent kidnappings have understandably caused concern among parents and educators, and Commissioner Alamutu’s call to action reflects the urgency of addressing this issue.
