  • Nigeria has suffered leadership ‘elephantiasis’, Tinubu tells US delegation

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, said Nigeria as the giant of Africa, has suffered what he described as ‘leadership elephantiasis’ for many years.

President Tinubu said this when he received a delegation from the United States Congress led by Senator Cory Booker on Wednesday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tinubu also said that his administration is committed to deepening democracy by ensuring adherence to the rule of law and expediting the sustainable provision of good governance, justice, and fairness to all Nigerian citizens.

According to him, while democracy must be defended, it must translate into tangibles of quality healthcare, good education, food security, shelter, and overall economic prosperity for the people of Nigeria.

He further stated that Nigeria is a necessary partner for the sustenance of democracy in Africa and beyond, noting that as the continent’s biggest economy and largest democracy, Nigeria was well-positioned to set the best continental example by delivering good governance to its people.

A statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, guoted him as saying: “Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, had suffered leadership elephantiasis years back. I am determined to change that. Adhering to the principles of democracy and the rule of law is very important to us. I wonder how democracy will survive if we do not fight for it. I fought for this democracy. I risked my life for it. Military truncation of democracy is unacceptable. The power of our citizens is and must remain supreme.”

Emphasizing the need for the United States to evolve a more prudent and pragmatic partnership with Africa, President Tinubu told the U.S. Congressional delegation that the United States should consider upscaling critical development programmes to strengthen ties with the continent.

“It is important for our partners to help strengthen democracy in Africa. Our developmental programmes need serious capital. We are not asking for freebies. All we are asking for is understanding. After the Second World War, Europe was impacted. America developed and executed the Marshall Plan to pull them back up. Today, Europe is standing firm and tall as a result. What about a Marshall plan for Africa?

“How can we be categorized and thrown into IMF’s basket of trickle-down slices? We are blessed in Africa, but these are the same resources causing conflicts because of exploitation and a lack of alignment. The presence of the resources does not reflect in the living conditions of the people. We must not use yesterday’s methods to address today’s challenges. Nobody wants to risk their life to run away from Africa.

“America needs to look at the situation in Africa critically. What is happening in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger emanates from a helpless feeling people have that they are not being helped economically. They find that their former colonial masters are not letting go and are still seeking to exploit them.

“We have mineral resources. What technology can you bring to help turn that into economic prosperity? Can you put de-risking finance in place to incentivize John Deere to assist us in massively mechanizing our food production processes? There is so much we can do in the advancement of education. See Africa as a necessary partner for the sustenance of democracy.

“We are capable and willing to lift our own people out of poverty,” President Tinubu affirmed.

Speaking earlier, Senator Cory Booker described President Bola Tinubu as a visionary leader who took tough but necessary decisions for the good of Nigerians.

“You are a leader of particular character. You have the courage to do very difficult things, right at the beginning of your term. Something that many American leaders should look to; someone who believes so much in their people that they can make difficult decisions and know that their country is resilient and strong to endure so that it can emerge stronger on the other side,” Senator Booker said.

Speaking furthrr, the U.S. Senator noted that Nigeria and the United States are partners bound by shared values of democracy, rule of law, and commitment to peace and good governance.

“I share my enthusiasm about deepening partnership between Nigeria and the United States. We know in America that there is no greater or more important partner for the United States on the African continent than its biggest country, its biggest democracy, and its biggest economy.

“I am excited about the opportunity we have had to learn, to listen, to meet these extraordinary people in your community that share our common values of democracy, entrepreneurship, and commitment to peace and strong growth. We know the investments we make in this country in different sectors, and our partnership on security and counter-terrorism are not just for Nigeria’s benefit but for both of our countries’ benefit.

“I can relate with what you are doing, Mr. President. I was the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, for years, and I know what I had to go through to reverse the fortunes of one of America’s most impoverished and troubled megacities. Several Newark Mayors before me fell on corruption charges. I had to restore hope and confidence. I had to beg investors to come in and believe in our city. We were persistent and we broke through. Newark is dramatically different today. I see so many similarities between the sustainable turnaround I led and the efforts you are making to transform Nigeria for the better. You have a partner in the United States,” Senator Booker said.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar also called the attention of the delegation to a resolution of the U.S. House of Representatives seeking to designate Nigeria as a country of concern over allegations of religious intolerance.

“Appeal to them (the House), Nigeria has a constitution that pays critical attention to the rights of all citizens. There is no government that will support anything inimical to the provisions of the constitution,” the Minister said.

Responding, U.S. Congresswoman Sara Jacobs said the broad consensus in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the White House is to not place Nigeria back on the list of countries of concern.

Govt has no business subsidising religious pilgrimages ? Bashir El-Rufai says

Bashir El-Rufai, the son of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that the government should have no business subsidising religious pilgrimages.

Some civil society groups have urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in Nigeria’s preparation for the 2024 Hajj by subsidising the fare for pilgrims after the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, announced an increment in the 2024 Hajj fare.

Subsequently, Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, approved a subsidy of N500,000 each for 2,096 intending Muslim pilgrims from the state for the 2024 Hajj exercise.

Reacting, El-Rufai said subsidising religious pilgrimages shouldn’t be a priority for any government, especially considering the current economic situation in the country.

Bashir El-Rufai wrote on his X handle: “Governments should have no business subsidising religious pilgrimages sha. Especially not in this current economic climate.”

  • PDP screens seven governorship aspirants in Ondo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) screening committee on Wednesday screened seven governorship aspirants in Ondo State.

Those screened at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja are Adeolu Akinwumi, Chief Olusola Ebiseni, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, Kolade Akinjo, Elder Bosun Arebuwa, John Mafo and Agboola Ajayi.

The committee is headed by the former Ebonyi State governor, Sam Egwu with Senator Isa Lau, Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, Mrs. Olivia Dazyman, Tanko Beji, and Mrs. Gladys Ashemuke as members.

Others were Chief Rahman Owokoniran as Secretary and Caroline Akinsete as Administrative Secretary.

Egwu told journalists at 3:30 p.m. that all the aspirants presented themselves for screening.

He, however, said some of the aspirants whose documents were not complete promised to come back to complete the documentation.

The former governor said the committee would present its report to the party after the conclusion of the exercise.

Egwu said: “We feel like everyone should have a level playing ground, with no opportunity to say they were screened out deliberately.

“The screening is going on till 5:00 p.m. today. PDP is the party that wants to give people opportunities provided they play by the rules of the game.

“If a candidate tells us he forgot a document and he is going to bring his document before 5:00 p.m., Why not?

“We don’t want to give them the impression that the party has a candidate it supports. Only a few persons are involved in this case.”

  • “You’re not Alone”, NIPPS Alumni Tell Olukoyede

“You’re not Alone”, NIPPS Alumni Tell Olukoyede

“You’re not Alone”, NIPPS Alumni Tell Olukoyede

The President, Alumni Association of the National Institute, AANI, Ambassador Emmmanuel Obi Okafor, has lauded the initiatives, drives and novel ideas of the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Ola Olukoyede in offering the Commission a new direction, assuring that his Association is fully behind him.

Okafor gave assurance in Abuja on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 when he led members of the Association on a courtesy visit to the EFCC Chairman at the Commission’s corporate headquarters.

“This courtesy visit is to tell you that we support you. It is also to assure you that you are doing a very good job. People don’t like those who fight corruption and that is why corruption fights back. We want to assure you that you have the backing of AANI. We are going to partner with you. You are not alone,” he said.

In his response, Olukoyede appreciated the senior citizens for the visit and expressed willingness to draw from their wealth of experience in public service, researches and studies, particularly in the area of fighting corruption, which he identified as the biggest roadblock to Nigeria’s progress and development.

“When it comes to public service it can only be to our advantage to learn from you. The greatest challenge that we have in this country is the issue of corruption. Corruption is like fuel that ignites all kinds of vices and evil in society. If you are talking about national development and you have not dealt with the issue of corruption, you have not started,”he said.

Speaking further, the EFCC boss disclosed that only effective preventive mechanisms can address the country’s entrenched corruption, pointing out that greater progress would be made if Nigerians show more commitment to the fight against economic and financial crimes.

“Fundamentally I discovered that Nigerians are not patently corrupt people. The problem we have is the system we run. But we cannot do anything about the system unless we go to the root of the system. So if we can channel more strength to prevention, it will leave us with little work to do in the area of investigation and prosecution”, he said.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome the challenge of corruption. “I know one day, we will get there. The preventive framework is designed in such a way that stealing can no longer be done without being checked. We will not wait for money to be stolen. It costs more to recover stolen funds than to prevent them from being stolen. We have developed the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control framework and it offers better prospects of tackling graft”, he said.

  • Anybody earning N200K monthly in Nigeria is better than someone that is earning £2000 in the UK

Anybody earning N200K monthly in Nigeria is better than someone that is earning 2000 in the UK - Air Peace boss, Allen Onyeoma (video)

Allen Onyeoma, the CEO of Air Peace, has said that those who earn two hundred thousand Naira monthly in Nigeria are better off than those earning two thousand pounds in the United Kingdom.

He said this while appearing as a guest on TVC.

Speaking to the host about the economic crisis and strength of the Naira, Onyema said he agrees that the bulk of the issue is “artificial”.

He added: “Go to London, if you earn two thousand pounds a month in London, you’re a pauper. What two thousand pounds can afford you is like two thousand Naira.”

He continued: “The person earning two hundred thousand Naira in Nigeria is better.”

Onyema added that with earnings of 200,000, a Nigerian can afford a maid, a driver and other domestic staff.

He said he believes completely that the Naira has more value than is being projected when compared to other foreign currencies.

He added that Nigerians should stop demonetising the country.
