  • Kuriga: Kaduna govt offers slain teacher’s children scholarship, N10m

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, on Thursday, said that the state government will take responsibility for the education of the children of the Kuriga school teacher who died while in the custody of the abductors who invaded Kuriga community in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Governor Sani further announced that the state government would be supporting the family of the teacher, Malam Abubakar with the sum of N10 million.

The governor announced these measures while addressing the rescued schoolchildren at the government house in Kaduna before their departure to Kuriga, adding that his foundation, Uba Sani Foundation will provide free education to the 137 rescued Kuriga schoolchildren.

According to him, the abduction will not hinder academic activities in the community, adding that adequate security would be provided.

Sani said he had directed that renovation should be carried out in the schools where the students were abducted.

“I want to say here today, that all the 137, like I promised them, will be my students by the grace of God,” the governor said.

“I have already directed the Uba Sani Foundation which has been in existence for the past 16 years delivering free education and healthcare, to look after them.

“I have also directed that a lot of renovation be put in place in the community and the schools because to me, Kuriga community is one of the most peaceful communities in Kaduna state.”

Speaking on the late teacher, Gov Sani said the state government will support his children.

“All the children are back safely, but we lost only one teacher, and may his soul rest in peace.

“Mallam Abubakar was a good man, and his children have missed him. We all miss him. He was one of the most resourceful teachers in the school, but we lost him.

“The Kaduna State government will be supporting the children of Mallam Abubakar through school. We will also be supporting the family with N10 million because of what they went through.”

It will be recalled that in the early hours of Sunday, Sani announced the release of the students.

They were abducted by bandits on March 7 from their schools in the Kuriga community, Chikun LGA.

Sani said all the 137 abducted students were released except the teacher who died in captivity.

After their release on Sunday, the students underwent medical and psychological examinations.

  • Over 20,000 Students Benefited From Educash Transfer- Ogun Govt

The Ogun State government has stated that 20,000 students in tertiary institutions in the state have benefited from Educash transfer of N50,000.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, while monitoring the cash transfer to primary and secondary schools at Ogun West Senatorial District, stated that 10,000 indigent pupils in primary and secondary schools in the state got N10,000 cash transfer.

The commissioner, who stated that more students will benefit from the scheme, explained that by the end of the week, about 25,000 students will be reached.

“I can tell you that for the tertiary institutions, we have done 20,000 as of today, and the total for tertiary institution beneficiaries is a little bit less than 50,000. Hopefully, by the end of next week, we will reach half of that, which is about 25,000 beneficiaries.

“I want to assure those who have not received theirs, for instance, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), a list of a little bit over 12,000 was sent to us. As we speak, we have paid just a little less than 6,000. The same thing at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), where we have a little bit less than 8,000. We have tried to make sure we are targeting between 45 to 50 per cent,” he said.

He further stated that no beneficiary will be paid through cash as the government wants a proper account of the transfer.

The commissioner noted the government would still avail any parent without a bank account an opportunity to do so as long as they have been captured for the payment.

“We are not paying cash to anybody; we are not handling cash. We are paying through accounts. If anyone doesn’t have an account, he should open one because it is difficult to trace cash transactions.

“If I say I paid 100 people, how will you confirm that? But through transfers, you can see it through bank statements and alerts received.’’

  • Man sentenced to life imprisonment for sodomising 10-year-old boy in Jigawa

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for sodomising 10-year-old boy in Jigawa

A State High Court sitting in Jigawa has sentenced a 25-year-old Aminu Ali to life imprisonment for raping and sodomising a 10-year-old boy.

Ali was convicted and sentenced by Justice Musa Ubale, on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

Ali, who hails from Aukayawa Quarters in the Gwaram Local Government Area of the state, was found guilty by the court after the prosecution had established “beyond reasonable doubt” that he lured the victim and engaged in anal sex with him.

To prove its case, the prosecution counsel presented five witnesses and submitted four exhibits, including a medical report.

In his ruling, Justice Ubale said the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Consequently, the judge sentenced the convict to life imprisonment under Section 3 (2&4) of the Violence Against Person Prohibition Law of Jigawa State (VAPP LAW).

Justice Ubale, however, stated that the convict has the legal right to appeal the judgment within three months.

  • Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses Again As AEDC Appeals For Understanding In Abuja

The AEDC, while confirming the development to its customers through its social media handles, said the national grid collapsed at about 4:28pm.

Nigerians have again been thrown into darkness as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Thursday announced another national grid collapse.

The AEDC, while confirming the development to its customers through its social media handles, said the national grid collapsed at about 4:28pm.

In the notice, the power distribution company said, “Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outage is due to a system failure from the national grid. The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today 28 March 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area.

“We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply.”

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company in a public notice said, “Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 16:28hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.

“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”

SaharaReporters in February reported how Nigerians across the country were thrown into darkness as the national power grid managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recorded its first collapse in 2024.

In September 2023, the TCN reported a total of 46 grid collapses in the country between 2017 and 2022.

In 2017 and 2018, there were 15 and 12 grid collapses respectively.

There were nine grid collapses in 2019, four in 2020 and two in 2021. In 2022, there were four grid collapses.

  • KFC Nigeria in panic mode after ‘no wheelchair allowed’ incident

KFC Nigeria is scrambling to mend fences after a public apology to Adebola Daniel, son of former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel.

Mr. Daniel, who uses a wheelchair, took to social media to accuse the Lagos airport branch of KFC of discriminatory treatment. This incident has sparked a wider conversation about accessibility and inclusion within Nigerian businesses.

    Details of the Allegation

Daniel’s tweets outlined a frustrating experience where he felt unwelcome and unable to access the restaurant due to a lack of proper disability accommodations.

His post read, “Never has this been more true than it has ever been today when I faced the worst sort of public humiliation that I have ever experienced. To think that this happened at an international brand, @kfc, @kfcnigeria, at an international airport, Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, is unthinkable.”

He explained that as they were about to sit, a lady who is “apparently the manager,” called out loudly, “No wheelchairs allowed.”

This incident highlights the real-world challenges faced by people with disabilities in navigating public spaces.

    KFC’s Response and Public Reaction

KFC Nigeria responded swiftly with a public apology on their social media channels. They expressed regret for the distress caused and pledged to take swift action. The apology included a commitment to mandatory sensitivity training for staff and a review of accessibility measures at their branches.

While apologising via its verified X handle, @kfcnigeria, on Thursday, the food outlet said it had “embarked on efforts to address the situation,” adding that it “deeply regrets the frustration and distress experienced by our guests and extends sincere apologies to those affected.”

The statement read in part, “KFC is unwavering in our stance against bias or discrimination in any form, with inclusivity and respect as non-negotiable pillars of our values. In response, we are urgently implementing inclusion training for all our employees. This incident is not reflective of our standards, and we will act swiftly to rectify it”.

Although KFC had tendered a “sincere apology” to Daniel via its verified X handle on Thursday, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Dr Adamu Abdullahi, said it “strongly condemns any form of discrimination against consumers, especially those based on disability,” describing the alleged action as “not only unlawful but also inhumane and contrary to the values that we, as a society, hold dear.”

The FCCPC added that it would continue to “work closely with relevant authorities to ensure appropriate redress for the aggrieved consumer in this case, as well as ensure that the KFC outlet in question takes full responsibility for its actions.”

    Beyond KFC: A Systemic Issue

This incident exposes a broader issue of accessibility in Nigeria. While legislation like the 2018 Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act exists, enforcement remains a challenge. Many public and private spaces lack basic infrastructure to cater to people with disabilities.

Looking Ahead: KFC’s Path to Regaining Trust

The effectiveness of KFC’s apology hinges on concrete actions. Implementing the promised sensitivity training and accessibility reviews will be crucial. Transparency regarding the training content and accessibility upgrades will be key to regaining public trust.

The KFC incident serves as a teachable moment for businesses operating in Nigeria. It highlights the importance of proactive measures to ensure inclusivity. Beyond apologies, a genuine commitment to accessibility will be vital for businesses to avoid similar public backlash in the future. Whether KFC emerges from this incident with a strengthened reputation for inclusivity remains to be seen. Their actions in the coming months will be closely watched.

  • ALGON Leadership Battle: IGP Asked To Curb Alabi Kolade’s ‘Excesses’ Ahead Of Court Judgement

The board of trustees of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other security agencies to curb what it termed as the “excesses” of Mr Alabi Kolade against the association’s interest.

Kolade has been insisting that he is the association’s national president.

The call was made on Thursday in a press briefing in Abuja, ahead of a Federal High Court judgement which seeks to determine the authentic chairman of the association.

The ALGON BOT chairman, Honorable Shaban Ohinoyi Shuaibu, alleged that Kolade has been holding meetings with some 5 Local Government Council Chairmen from across the country, to unconstitutionally install another person as a surrogate just like himself.

He added that given the subsisting matter before the court, stakeholders should await the decision of the judiciary on the constitutionality of the
774 Local Governments in Nigeria, which Bariga Development Area is not a part of.

“It is crucial to highlight that legal recourse has been sought, at a Federal High Court in Abuja to address this grievous situation.

“The court’s judgment is been awaited. And as the registered trustees of ALGON, we will continue to restrict our constitutional responsibilities
while awaiting pronouncement of the court.

“We urge all stakeholders to remain vigilant and steadfast in upholding the sanctity of our democratic processes. ALGON, as a vital
component of our governance structure, must operate within the confines of the law, with leadership duly elected from the grassroots
    level.

“Let it be known that any attempts to subvert the principles of democracy will be met with resolute action, as we remain committed to upholding the rule of law and preserving the integrity of our democratic institutions.

“We therefore invite the Inspector General of Police , DG DSS and other security agencies to curb the excesses of Alabi Kolade David, to avoid heating up the Polity,” he said.

Shuaibu maintained that while the legal battle is ongoing, the Trustees (BOT) of ALGON should hold and carry out all responsibilities and oversees the affairs of ALGON in line with the association’s constitution.

He added, “First and foremost, it is instructive to let the public know that, since Mr Alabi’s wrongful claim to the office of the Presidency, ALGON has
been emersed in series of Court cases, thus any activities carried out by any of the parties in the name of ALGON until the final determination of the cases is null and void.

“It is also the enshrined in the ALGON constitution that the registered board of trustees are charged to conduct elections into leadership within the
    shortest period possible.”

The briefing was attended by BOT members including Honorable Chukwudi Fred Ezinwa (BOT Secretary) and Honorable Ben Kure (BOT PRO).

THE WHISTLER reports that the court had fixed April 30 for judgment in a case seeking a declaration that Honorable Akolade David Alabi is not qualified to be national chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON).

The claimants which included the BOT members, argue that Kolade, who was chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area in Lagos State at the time, cannot be president of the association as Bariga is not among the country’s 774 Local Government Areas.

The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1609/2023 and filed by Barrister Bartholomew Opara, argued that
Kolade had been removed by ALGON’s National Executive Council in 2019 but he keeps parading himself as chairman.

But Kolade’s lawyer, Wahab Shittu, filed a counter affidavit and preliminary objection urging the court to decline jurisdiction on the matter.
