  • ‘Nigerian Opposition Must Unite To Oust APC’ – Atiku Hails Election In Senegal

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the only way the ruling party can be ousted from power to enable the salvation of Nigeria is for the opposition political parties to unite in the next general elections.

Leading political leaders went separately in the 2023 elections which led to split votes. Many analysts including the candidates during the election have said the divided opposition created an easy electoral route for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to emerge victorious.

Atiku restated this on Friday having canvassed for a united opposition soon after the Supreme Court ruled on the outcome of the 2023 elections.

In a message congratulating Senegalese people and Bassirou Diomaye, whose victory has been reverberating across the region and the world, Atiku said military interregnum is not an option.

He said the election in Senegal “gives hope to the future of constitutional democracy in the region.

“For us in Nigeria and elsewhere, there’s a huge lesson to be learnt from the Senegal experience. It is an affirmation that democracy, which is anchored on the supremacy of the ballot, represents the best form of government.

“It is also possible for the electoral umpire to run an election on the basis of the law and its own guidelines that give confidence to all parties and the voters,” Atiku, who had been on the ballot for more than half of the presidential elections since 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy, said.

He reminisced that, “Our experiences in both 2019 and 2023 show clearly that INEC performed below this expectation.

“Whereas in Senegal, the responses of the major actors and the citizens are a validation of the process of the election that voted for President-elect Bassirou Diomaye.”

He stressed that, “It is important to note that last Sunday’s election in Senegal follows the trend of that in Nigeria in 2015 that the opposition can indeed be victorious in an election conducted by the ruling party.

“And for the opposition parties, the lessons are in agreement with my persistent call for our opposition parties to forge a coalition that is formidable enough to oust the ruling party if the salvaging of Nigeria is to stand any chance.

“Congratulations, President-elect Faye. It is my hope and prayer that your election will not only be hugely beneficial to the people of Senegal but also an inspiration to the rest of us in the West African subregion,” Atiku said.

Initiatives such as this are key to addressing some of the challenges facing women. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts, 75 million more people have fallen into severe poverty since 2020, according to UN data.

The current global economic system disproportionately affects women, with women earning 51 cents for each dollar that men earn and constituting 61.4 per cent of the prime working-age in the labour force compared to 90 per cent for men.

Immediate action remains crucial to prevent over 342 million women and girls – an estimated 8% of the world’s female population – from living in poverty by 2030, with close to one in four at risk of experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity.

  • Wife Of Binance Executive Detained By Nigerian Government Seeks US Intervention

Mrs Yuki Gambaryan, wife of one of the Binance executives detained by the Nigerian government, Tigran Gambaryan, has called on the United States’ government for intervention on her husband’s continued detention in Nigeria.

Yuki made the call through the US Senator, Cory Booker, and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, who led a delegation to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday at the State House.

In a statement made available to journalists, she said, “For more than 30 days, the Nigerian government held my husband without charging him with any crime.

“Then, they charged him with being responsible for the unsubstantiated actions of his employer rather than having negotiations with the company in a manner in line with international norms.

“Simply put, my husband is being held as blackmail. As these members of Congress are travelling across Nigeria, I am calling on them to push the Nigerians to release Tigran and continue their investigation directly with Binance through appropriate channels.”

SaharaReporters had reported that Gambaryan sued the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged violation of his fundamental rights.

Gambaryan in the originating motion dated and filed on March 18 by his lawyer, Olujoke Aliyu, from Aluko and Oyebode Law Firm, sought five reliefs before Justice Inyang Ekwo.

Also, Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s Africa regional manager who escaped from lawful custody on March 22, filed a separate right enforcement suit before Justice Ekwo.

SaharaReporters had also reported that the Office of the NSA had confirmed the escape of one of the detained executives of Binance, Nadeem Anjarwalla from custody.

In February, Gambaryan, a US citizen and the head of financial crime compliance at Binance, and his colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla, who has escaped from custody, were detained by the Nigerian government for financial and other related offences.

  • CBN mulls deployment of security agents to monitor banks’ recapitalisation process

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has resolved to deploy law enforcement agencies to monitor the recapitalisation process in the banking sector.

The apex bank on Thursday raised the minimum capital base for the various tiers of the banking sector.

It raised the minimum capital base for commercial banks with international standing to N500 billion and N200 billion for national banks.

The CBN also set a N50 billion threshold for regional banks, among other measures.

In a circular titled: “Review of Minimum Capital Requirements for Commercial, Merchant, and Non-Interest Banks in Nigeria,” signed by its Director of the Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Mr. Haruna Mustafa, on Friday, the CBN mandated banks to do anti-money laundering screening to prevent the influx of illicit funds into the sector.

The circular read: “The CBN has robust anti-money laundering regulations which will be strictly enforced, with the active collaboration of relevant law enforcement agencies. In addition, the CBN will require all banks to ensure that appropriate and effective anti-money laundering screening/checks (Know Your Customer, Customer Due Diligence and Suspicious Transactions Monitoring, etc) are conducted.

“The CBN will actively monitor and supervise the recapitalization process to ensure compliance with set guidelines.

“This will involve the conduct of on- and off-site reviews, verification of capital, periodic interventions when necessary, and broader stakeholder engagements.”

  • Security Agencies To Enforce Banks’ Recapitalisation — CBN

    cbn-office

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday revealed that it is employing the services of security agencies to enforce the new banking sector recapitalisation requirement.

The move is to prevent illicit financing of the recapitalization by banks.

The CBN Director of the Financial Policy and Regulation Department Haruna Mustafa, in a circular, said the apex bank’s motive to apply robust anti-money laundering regulations will vigorously tackle illegality.

Mustafa said, “The CBN has robust anti-money laundering regulations which will be strictly enforced, with the active collaboration of relevant law enforcement agencies.

“In addition, the CBN will require all banks to ensure that appropriate and effective anti-money laundering screening/checks (Know Your Customer, Customer Due Diligence and Suspicious Transactions Monitoring, etc) are conducted.”

The apex bank urged the commercial banks on the importance of vetting new investors and significant shareholders through the fit and proper criteria requirement.

Speaking on the guidelines to be rolled out to the commercial banks, the CBN said, “We will actively monitor and supervise the recapitalization process to ensure compliance with set guidelines.

“This will involve the conduct of on- and off-site reviews, verification of capital, periodic interventions when necessary and broader stakeholder engagements.”

Subsequently, the CBN approved that, “Banks may meet the new requirement through the following options: a. Issuance of new common shares (by way of public offer, rights issues, or private placements); b. Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As); or c. upgrade/downgrade of their respective license category or authorization.

“The CBN will issue guidelines to prescribe the definition, options and approaches to meeting the new minimum capital requirement.”

Earlier, the CBN reviewed the new minimum capital requirements for banks, pegging the minimum capital base for commercial banks with international authorisation at N500bn.

THE WHISTLER had reported that the new minimum capital base for commercial banks with national authorisation was pegged at N200bn, with the regional authorization moved to N50bn.

  • Rumi Carter makes music debut as she joins mother Beyonce on ‘Cowboy Carter’ song

Rumi Carter makes music debut as she joins mother Beyonce on

Rumi Carter seems to be following in her big sister Blue Ivy’s footsteps.

The 6-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z is featured on her superstar mother’s new album, Cowboy Carter.

The track “Protector” begins with a snippet of Rumi saying, “Mom, can I hear the lullaby, please?”

On the track, Beyoncé embraces her role as a mother and sings about protecting and being proud of her children.

She says in the chorus: “And I will lead you down that road if you lose your way / Born to be a protector / Even though I know someday you’re gonna shine on your own / I will be your projector.”

Rumi’s big sister Blue was the star of last year’s Renaissance tour, as she stole the show with a dance solo night after night. Before that, she won her first Grammy at 9 years old for her work on Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl” music video.

Like Rumi, clips of Blue speaking as a young child appeared on Bey’s song “Blue” in 2013. But now that Rumi and her twin brother Sir are growing up, it seems like she’s bound to be more involved in her mother’s work too.

  • DSS grants IPOB leader, Kanu, access to his doctor

The Department of State Services (DSS), on Thursday, granted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu permission to be examined by a doctor of his choice.

This comes after a prolonged legal battle between Kanu’s lawyers and the DSS, with Kanu requesting access to his personal physicians for medical reasons.

According to Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, the doctor selected to perform the examination was deemed competent and was personally chosen by Kanu himself.

Ejimakor, taking to his X platform, wrote: “The jinx is finally broken. Today, a very competent doctor, personally chosen by Onyendu #MNK, met & examined him.

“It wasn’t easy, counting from last year when this should’ve happened. The indomitable #MnkLegalTeam also met with MNK today. It’s tough but we must not relent.”

Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, had previously argued that his client’s health had deteriorated significantly while in custody. The DSS, however, had maintained that Kanu was receiving adequate medical care within their facilities.

A court ruling in July 2023 had ordered the DSS to grant Kanu access to his medical records and doctors. The judge, however, stipulated that the examination be conducted under the supervision of the DSS, with the entire process documented for security purposes.

Further details regarding the doctor’s findings and any recommendations made are also not yet available.
