    Indian police arrest three Nigerians for drug trafficking

    The Chandigarh Police Crime Branch in India said it busted an international drug syndicate, arrested three foreign nationals, and seized 204.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine popularly known as ice. 

     

    The suspects were on Tuesday April 2, identified as Frank Nwokeji, Loua, and Jack David llobi Tochukwu. They are Nigerians residing in New Delhi. 

     

    Loua had been previously detained in 2019 under the NDPS Act after being found in possession of 207 grams of heroin and is currently out on bail before he was arrested for drug-related activities. Similarly, David had prior run-ins with the law and had been arrested by the Delhi Police on previous occasions

     

    According to the police, a team of crime branch led by Inspector Ashok Kumar had on March 30 received a tip-off that three Africans, who used to supply drugs in Chandigarh, were arriving with a large quantity of narcotics. 

     

    It was learnt that the suspects had entered India on medical and business visas for a short stay but got involved in illicit drug trafficking and had overstayed illegally after their visas expired. 

     

    The police further disclosed that the investigation revealed that the suspects bought the contraband from their country at lower prices and then sold them at higher prices in discos, pubs, and bars in the Tricity area.

     

    The police said the investigation into the case was ongoing, adding that authorities were hoping to crack down on more members of the drug syndicate.

  • BREAKING: Traders Count Losses As Fire Destroys Popular Market In Kwara State

    Several shops were razed by a fire outbreak which started in the early hours of Tuesday at Owode Market in Offa, Kwara State.

    “This light is too much. This is not caused by NEPA (electricity). Maybe some people were cooking and the fire started from there because this light is much,” one of the traders said in the video. 

     

     

    When SaharaReporters called a source from the town on Tuesday morning for update, he said the fire was eventually quenched by the personnel of Federal Fire Service and Kwara State Fire Service. 

     

     

    The source added that no fewer than five shops were affected by the inferno. 

     

    “The authorities are still assessing the situation, but personally, I know at least five shops were affected. The worth of goods and properties destroyed can’t be said now until the assessment finishes. 

     

     

    “There are also several claims as to the cause of the fire until we wait for the fire service to release their statement on it,” the source said.

     

     

    Meanwhile, barely eight months ago, there was a report about a midnight fire razed a residential building in the town and destroyed property worth N6.5million.

     

     

    The incident that occurred at about 1:05am at Kowope compound, Olorunkuse area, Offa, affected a two- bedroom flat and four shops.

     

     

     

     

    The spokesman of Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle who confirmed the incident at that time had said the quick intervention of the firefighters saved property estimated to worth N13.3million.

  • Man dies in Lagos accident

    An unidentified man died in an accident involving a commercial Toyota Hiace Bus, and two other vehicles on Tuesday in Lagos.

    The Director, of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Mr. Adebayo Taofiq confirmed the accident in a statement in Lagos.

    He said the incident occurred at Demurin Junction inward Kosofe, Lagos, at 6:45 a.m.

    The LASTMA spokesman added that another trapped female passenger inside one of the Volkswagen commercial buses was rescued by the agency’s personnel and immediately handed over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

    Taofik said: “The commercial bus driver was immediately apprehended by LASTMA personnel, and policemen from Alapere Police Station provided security backup during the rescue operations.

    “The LASTMA official, Olawaye Olugbenga (Head, Zone 32 Ketu) who led the rescue operations confirmed that his team immediately evacuated all commercial buses involved in the accident.”

    Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman

    The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman has disclosed the top three focus of the Ministry in line with the plans of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration in moving the sector.

    The Minister who was speaking at the Citizens and Stakeholders’ Engagement on Nigerian Education Sector Ministerial Deliverables On Tuesday, listed the priorities as building a reliable and authentic Data base for the sector, reducing the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, and promoting skills development and acquisition at all levels.

    The minister stated that to achieve these priorities, the ministry has developed a strategic plan captioned, Nigeria Education Sector Roadmap (2024-2027).

    He added that the Roadmap contains eight focus areas and 13 pillars geared towards implementing the 23 Ministerial Deliverables.

    While speaking on the challenges facing the sector, Mamman lamented the issue of insecurity, attack and displacement, and disruption affecting schools in the country.

    “Others include shortage of qualified teachers and insufficient capacity at state and local government levels to implement Universal Basic Education programme, insufficient funding and failure of some states to provide UBE counterpart funding in order to Access UBE intervention funds as and when due,” he said.

    Also speaking, the minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu noted that the event is important as it provides a platform for the ministry to inform all citizens of its achievements in the delivery of the programmes and projects assigned to the sector by the President.

    “Another important aspect of the gathering is to enable us to hear from the stakeholders their perception on the journey so far and also to listen to the stakeholders suggestions on more areas requiring urgent attention and priority focus,” he said.

    Sununu further stated that the engagement provides stakeholders in the sector with opportunities to critically examine the progress so far made in the implementation of 23 Ministerial Deliverables apportioned to the Education Sector by Mr. President at the end of the Cabinet Retreat for Ministers, Presidential Aides, Permanent Secretaries and Top Government Functionaries held from on November, 2023.

    Police debunk claim of abduction of worshippers in Gusau

    Zamfara State Police Command has debunked claim of abduction of worshippers by armed bandits in Gusau.

     

    It was alleged that bandits barricaded a mosque located behind NEPA at Samaru area under Gusau local government and abducted numbers of worshippers Ramadan prayer (Tuhajjud) around 2 am on Tuesday, April 2. 

     

    Reacting to this, the state’s police command spokesperson, Yazid Mohammed stated that people are only circulating a false report without authenticating the true situation. Mohammed said what happened was the killing of one Ashiru Mohammed, a provision store business man living at Bulunku quarters and the abduction of his wife and a neighbor.

     

    A  source residing at NEPA area where the alleged incident took place, also told Vanguard there was no abduction of people in the area. He stressed that they only heard gunshot from a far distance while they were saying their Tuhajjud (Night prayer).

     

    He said;

     

    “We are saying our Tuhajjud (Ramadan Night Prayers) at the Jumu’at Mosque situated behind NEPA area, and we are normally guided by vigilante people surrounding the mosque to ensure safety of worshippers”

    Residents of the area in a telephone call said the fresh attack on the children, took place in the early hours of Monday, Channels TV reports.

    At least 30 children have been kidnapped by suspected bandits at Kasai village in the Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

    Batsari is one of several Local Government Areas in Katsina State where activities of bandits, and other criminal elements have been on the increase almost on a daily basis.

     

    One of the residents of the area, told Channels TV that the children were intercepted and kidnapped by the hoodlums behind the village area while in search of firewood for cooking. 

     

    “Yes, the attack occurred yesterday Monday in the morning hours. It all began when the children numbering up to thirty went behind the Kasai village to secure firewood which, their parents would use to cook food for them.

     

    “Unfortunately, some suspected bandits intercepted them and took them to an unknown destination.

     

    “We do hope and pray that peace and security will be restored in our state”, he added.

     

     

    At the time of filling in this report, the government and security agencies were yet to comment on the issue.

     

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, is also yet to respond to enquiries.

  • Bandits kill man, kidnap wife in Zamfara

    Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Tuesday killed a man identified as Ashiru Maigoma in Zamfara State.

    The hoodlums also abducted the victim’s wife and his neighbor at their residence in the Bulunku area of Gusau, the state capital at about 2:00 a.m.

    The spokesman for the state police command, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident to journalists.

    The spokesman said the victim was shot dead after he resisted an attempt to abduct him.

    He said: “The bandits entered the building to pick their target identified as one Ashiru Maigoma. But he resisted the bandits, and they shot him, kidnapped his wife and his neighbour.

    “Police tactical had been deployed to rescue the victims safely.”

  • Commercial Bus Kills Man Waiting To Board Vehicle At Lagos Bus-Stop

    A commercial bus on Tuesday killed a man waiting to board a bus at Ketu Bus-Stop, by Demurin Junction, along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State.

    It was gathered that the Toyota Hiace bus laden with pepper and other perishable goods lost control while on high speed due to a brake failure.

    As a result, the bus rammed into two Volkswagen buses, leading to the man’s death.

    However, a trapped female passenger onboard one of the Volkswagen buses was rescued by the operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and handed over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASMBUS) for medical attention.

    The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the accident.

    “Preliminary investigations revealed that an Inter-State Toyota Hiase commercial bus (NSW 216 XA) fully loaded with pepper and other perishable goods while on a high speed lost control as a result of a brake failure rammed into another 2 commercial Volkswagen buses and killed a pedestrian waiting to board bus at Ketu Bus Stop by Demurin Junction along Ikorodu Road, Lagos,” Adebayo said.

    According to him, the driver of the Hiace was immediately apprehended by LASTMA officials.

    Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASTMA Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki while appealing to residents to always stay at government designated bus stops to board commercial buses, warned drivers against over-speeding.

    He urged them to always ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey within or outside the state.
