  • VIDEO: Air Passengers Left Stranded For Hours At Rivers Airport As Arik Air Cancels Flight, Reportedly Says Refund Will Take 8 Months

Some passengers of Arik Air have been seen in viral videos lamenting how they were left stranded at the Port Harcourt airport without any alternative after their flight was cancelled.

The flight was reportedly scheduled to go from Port Harcourt in Rivers State to Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre.

One of the frustrated passengers is heard narrating how he was asked to pay the sum of N2 million to rebook four tickets after the cancellation of the flight by Arik Air management.

He said the airline did not tender any apology or give any justification for the cancellation of the flight.

The passenger said, “You cancelled the flight yesterday by 11 pm and we are back here by 12:30 pm (today) and you are telling us that nothing will happen.

“You told us to come back today that we will enter a flight by 12:30 pm. You rebooked four tickets, N2 million. That is stupidity. No apology, nothing from them.”

The passenger added that the company told the affected passengers that it would take at least eight months before they could successfully get a refund.

“The refund, they say it will take eight months. You cancelled the flight by 11 in the night – no excuse. And you said we should come back by 12:30 and now they said we should wait till 7 pm again,” the passenger added.

This incident has resulted in a backlash from Nigerian netizens against the airline on X with #ArikAirFailures trending on the social media platform.

Some of the tweeps expressed their displeasure at how the company allegedly maltreats its passengers.

“Arik air made this man lose N2m, It’s so sad that consumers have no rights and there are no penalties for this kind of actions by airline operators.

“A flight scheduled for 6:30pm from port harcourt to Lagos was cancelled by 11pm without an apology. #ArikAirFailures,” Mubarak, an X user commented on the incident.

“It’s infuriating to hear about passengers like this man losing significant sums of money because of Arik Air’s incompetence. The airline industry needs stricter regulations to protect consumers from such injustices. #ArikAirFailures,” another user, Veronica said.

This comes a few days after the airline announced that it had been named as the ‘Best Sustainable Airline of the Year 2024’ by the World Quality Alliance and Quality Standards Journal.

A statement by Adebanji Ola, Arik Air’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, said that the award was presented to the airline at the National Quality Summit 2024 held in Abuja last Friday.

  • Four SDP witnesses give conflicting testimonies at Kogi tribunal

Four Social Democratic Party (SDP) witnesses testified at the ongoing hearing of the Kogi State election petition tribunal in Abuja and gave contradictory testimonies on the conduct of the poll.

The witnesses gave their accounts before the three-member panel of justices led by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu.

The SDP and its governorship candidate, Murtala Ajaka, are challenging Governor Usman Ododo’s victory in the November 11, 2023 election in Kogi State.

During Wednesday’s session, there were different accounts by the witnesses, especially during cross-examination.

A witness from the Ajaokuta local government area of the state, Danlamin Yakubu, said he was an SDP agent during the election.

Yakubu, who said he was a member of the SDP, a voter, and the party’s agent during the poll, however, told the tribunal that he had lost everything that could prove that he was an agent.

When asked if he stated in his deposition before the tribunal that he was an agent in the election, he said he forgot to do so.

He also claimed that his lawyer wrote his deposition for him.

When his attention was brought to paragraph 4 of his deposition that he did not indicate the total number of accredited voters, the witness said it was a typographical error.

Although in his deposition, Yakubu indicated that the number of registered voters in his polling unit was 771, when he was asked to confirm the number, he gave a conflicting response.

“I did not indicate that I voted in my deposition,” he said.

Another witness, Abdulkareem Ogeja, from the same local government area, said that he was a member of the SDP, but did not state his membership of the party in his disposition.

The witness, however, said he was not the party’s agent during the election.

When the respondent’s counsel asked if he was surprised that the SDP agent did not complain and he was the only one complaining, Ogeja said, “I’m not surprised.”

Emmanuel Ohiare, from Okehi LGA, and Abdullahi Musa from Ajaokuta LGA, equally testified at the sitting.

The tribunal adjourned the sitting till April 4 for continuation of hearing.

  • We’ll Consult God, Not Ifá Oracle, To Select New King — Osun Kingmakers

As the process of selecting the new Olumoro of Moro in Ife North Local Government area of Osun State is set to commence, kingmakers and traditional chiefs have vowed not to consult Ifa oracle and deities to select a replacement.

The Moro council of chiefs and Kingmakers led by the Oosa of the town, High Chief Festus Abidoye, told newsmen at the palace on Wednesday that during the reign of the late king, Oba Ezekiel Oyeniyi, remarkable developments were recorded because he replaced idol worshiping with Jesus Christ.

He said, “Oba Oyeniyi replaced the Egungun festival with Moro For Christ crusade and other Christian festivities,” he said.

Abidoye noted that, “Selection of the new king of the town will be fair and follow due process. We have prayed and are still praying. When the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi visited us he told us that he is in support of whatever has been done to select a new king.

“We have tasted both the benefits of serving deities and God almighty, we have seen which one pays us. Since we shifted our allegiance to Jesus Christ, we witnessed monumental development in our community.

“Most of the Ifa diviners are only looking for what to eat, we are not going to consult Ifa in choosing our next king, we are going to consult our God. The moment we move with his will, he will perfect it. This community is not mono-religious community. We have both Christian and Muslim community. We are not going to exclude Muslim in whatever we will do but we are not going to include idol worshippers. No Ifa worshiper will come here to give us divination.

“Bribery and corruption blind the eyes of the wise. I have told all the chiefs to shun bribery from any contestants and I have assurance that they won’t do it, if they do it the wrath of God will fall on whosoever that indulges in it.“

Newborn buried alive by mother, 23, miraculously survives after spending 6 hours trapped beneath soil

A newborn baby miraculously survived spending six hours beneath soil after being buried alive by her mother.

According to reports, the child’s mother, 23, from Uganda, buried her baby in a garden just moments after giving birth with no medical assistance.

A case report from January states the newborn girl was buried during the night, and was not discovered until 11 am the following morning.

The mother’s family members had discovered trails of blood in the garden near her family home, which led them to the burial site.

After making an urgent call to the emergency services, medics rushed to the home to rescue the trapped child who was found still attached to the placenta.

The baby showed signs of limb movement when touched, but had breathing issues.

Shocking images showed the child covered in deep cuts and bruises, following the pressure of being stuck underground overnight.

The baby was pulled from the makeshift grave as medics attempted to save her. After bringing her to safety, the medics immediately cleaned the baby and separated her from the placenta by cutting the remainder of the umbilical cord.

According to the case report, the child was cold to the touch and her skin had turned ‘bluish’ after being buried throughout the night.

She was placed in an incubator and received oxygen via nasal prongs as medics marvelled at how the tiny girl had survived the ordeal.

Further examinations revealed she had suffered no injuries to her heart, stomach, or any other organs.

Just six days later, the newborn was discharged from hospital and was back to breathing normally without an oxygen supply within 24-hours.

The newborn is now being raised by her grandmother, after her mother was taken into custody by local authorities for attempted infanticide.

She was then reportedly placed in a correctional centre, before being transferred to a psychiatric facility.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Agency, EFCC Grills University Of Jos’ VC, Prof. Tanko Over Alleged N355Million Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has grilled the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos in Plateau State, Prof. Ishaya Tanko over alleged fraud.

EFCC in a letter dated March 19, 2024, signed by Adebayo Adeniyi, Zonal Commander, Abuja, invited the VC for questioning.

The commission requested the VC to come with Dr. Yusuf Abdullahi, the University’s Deputy Dean of Student Affairs to attend an interview with the undersigned through the Head CTGI-P5.1, on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

The agency also asked Prof. Tanko to come with his response to their earlier letter dated December 27, 2023.

The letter with reference number CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/ZN/CTGI-PS.1/TA/VOL.18/200 dated March 19, 2024 is titled, ‘Re: Investigation Activities. Letter Of Invitation.’

The letter addressed to the VC reads: “The Commission’s letter referenced CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/ZN/CTGI-PS.1/TA/VOL.18/030 dated 27th December, 2023 refers.

“In view of the above, you are kindly requested to come with Dr. Yusuf Abdullahi, Deputy Dean, Student Affairs of the University to attend an interview with the undersigned through the Head CTGI-P5.1, on Tuesday 26th March, 2024 by 10:00am at Block A. EFCC Abuja Zonal Command, No. 5 Fomella Street, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja.

“You are further requested to come with the response to our earlier letter dated 27th December, 2023 (copy enclosed).

“Your cooperation in this regard is highly solicited, please.”

SaharaReporters gathered that Prof. Tanko, who honoured the invitation on Tuesday, March 26, was grilled for hours by personnel of the agency.

Tanko had been accused of diverting three hundred and fifty-five million naira (N355,000,000.00) to different private accounts.

The money was said to have been used to offset a certain liability of rent for the university’s two liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja through a company named Kolo Global Concept Ltd which he introduced as the owners of the properties.

Some staff members of the University in a petition to the Minister of Education alleged that the two liaison offices of the school were already purchased by the previous administrations of the University.

According to the petition, the company – Kolo Global Concept Ltd – did not have any form of contract with the University at the time of the vice-chancellor’s request for funds. The petition added that the money was later distributed to various accounts on the directives of the VC.

The workers alleged that the sharing formula did not later go well with some of the parties involved in the fraudulent transaction, thereby resulting in an impasse.

The petition reads in part, “The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Ishaya Tanko wrote a fraudulent letter to the Federal Government sometime in September 2022 requesting the government to offset a certain liability of rent for the university’s two liaison offices situated in Lagos and Abuja to the tune of three hundred and fifty-five million naira (N355,000,000.00) to a company named KOLO GLOBAL CONCEPT LTD whom he claimed and introduced through his letter addressed to the then Minister of Finance as the owners of the properties used as the University’s liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja.

“The Honorable Minister may wish to note that the two liaison offices of the University of Jos are already purchased by the University during previous administrations of former Vice-Chancellors of the University whom the current VC was part of at some point.

“Similarly, Sir, further investigations revealed that the company KOLO GLOBAL CONCEPT LTD is not in any form of contract with the University as at the time of the Vice-Chancellor’s request for funds.

“After investigations in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, we found that the sum of three hundred and eleven million sixty-nine thousand naira, forty four kobo (N311,069,767.44) net of taxes was paid from service-wide vote into the account of KOLO GLOBAL CONCEPT LTO via GIFMIS with the following details:

“AWAK-DAVE QUALITY VENTURES: Account number: 4091718964, Bank: Polaris Bank Amount: N150,000,000, Date: October 10 2023.

“URBAN CRIBS LIMITED-II: Account number: 0002784695, Bank: Taj Bank, Amount:

“N105,600,000, Date: September 18 2023. 3. BELGABDO INTEGRATED SERVICES LTD: Account number: 1016183653, Bank: Zenith Date: September 18 2023, Amount: 12,000,000.

“The money was later distributed to various accounts on the directives of the Vice-Chancellor. The sharing formula did not later go well with some of the parties involved in the fraudulent transaction thereby resulting in a lot of impasse between them.

    EXCLUSIVE Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Agency, EFCC _240403_210408.pdf

“The Vice-Chancellor because of fear of being busted due to the controversies surrounding the money, later directed the owner of KOLO GLOBAL CONCEPT LTD to retrieve all the monies from the beneficiaries of the transaction. Attached is a copy of one of the letters written by the owner of the company to one of the parties involved.

“Sir, it may also interest you to know that Prof. Ishaya Tanko has since assuming office as the Vice-Chancellor has been accumulating wealth for himself through frivolous foreign travels which have little or no benefit to the University thereby squandering the little revenue being generated by the University. The bursary department of the university can be contacted for details of his travels.

“It is because of your zero tolerance for corruption and corrupt practices and the confidence the public has in you that we urge you to investigate this matter sir and bring any erring public officer to book. The public and the entire University community kindly await your swift action.”

Meanwhile, efforts to reach Prof. Tanko and the University’s public relations officer, Abdullahi B. Abdullahi were not successful as they did not answer calls from our correspondent.

They also did not reply to messages sent to their mobile lines.

  • ‘Sadists…Criminals ‘ — Wike Blasts Critics Of FCT Infrastructure Projects

    FCT-Minister.-Nyesom-Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has defended the government’s ongoing efforts to address infrastructure challenges in the nation’s capital.

Wike also dismissed critics who claim there have been no improvements in the FCT since he became minister.

During an inspection of various road projects across the FCT on Wednesday, Wike described those who criticize the government’s initiatives as “sadists” who refuse to acknowledge the positive changes taking place.

The Minister inspected ongoing road projects at Guzape Lot 2, handled by Gilmor Construction, the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway project by Salini Nigeria Limited, road resurfacing projects in Asokoro by Julius Berger, and infrastructure developments in the Diplomatic Area.

“I don’t know about criminals. I have always told you that there are those who will never be happy in their lives. Anybody who says that there are no improvements in terms of streetlights is a sadist. We are trying to make some repairs of those that have been vandalised, which is not easy,” said Wike.

Responding to further questions about streetlight vandalism and public safety concerns, the Minister acknowledged the challenges of repairing vandalized infrastructure but assured the public that efforts are ongoing to address these issues.

He dismissed accusations of rising criminality, suggesting that those making such claims might be complicit themselves.

“Like when you heard Salini say here that they’ve tested it, but (the lights) have not been on because they are waiting for commissioning. So maybe this is part of the areas that they think that is dark.

“When they say criminals, I think those who are saying so are part of the criminals themselves. We should be able to commend government when there are improvements. I didn’t say here that we are going to concentrate only on roads.

“We are saying we are going to dwell on the health sector, the education sector, even agriculture. These people know, it’s just that some Nigerians find it difficult to accept the reality on ground that things have changed”, he said.

On the issue of land disputes between FCT natives and the military, Wike said discussions with the Chief of Defence Staff were ongoing, assuring that the issues will be resolved amicably.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for signing FCT’s 2024 Statutory Budget which he said will usher in “a revolution of infrastructure in Abuja and create numerous job opportunities across various sectors.”
