  • Mercy Chinwo’s Child: Nathaniel Bassey Petitions IGP Over ‘Defamatory’ Paternity Claims

    Nathaniel-Bassey-and-Mercy-Chinwo.

Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Nathaniel Bassey has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, seeking the arrest and prosecution of four social media users over suggestions that he’s the father of fellow gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s child.

Bassey, in petition filed through his lawyers, accused the social media users of criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

According to the gospel singer, the social media users identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot and Dj Spoiltkid made the defamatory statements on micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter).

The petition reads: “Our client is a gospel music minister whose songs and ministrations have impacted the lives of so many from different walks of life across the globe.

“On Friday, the 29th day of March 2024, Mercy Chinwo Blessed another popular gospel music minister, and her husband posted pictures of their son and themselves on different social media platforms.

“However, our client was disheartened, saddened, and grossly disturbed to find that the above-mentioned suspects, as mischief makers with a criminal intent to destroy the image and character of our client, had made different social media posts of defamatory matter, calling our client ‘the father of minister Mercy Chinwo Blessed’s son,’ a woman who is married to another man.

“The post by Mr. Okoronkwo Ejike has since gone viral on the platform. In reaction to the post, Mr. Kingsley Ibeh commented on Mr. Okoronkwo’s post with a picture of our client with the caption “The real father of the baby.

“In a post on the platform “X” formerly known as Twitter, “Dj SpoiltKid” a verified X user, quoted the statement by Okoronkwo Ejike along with a screenshot of the post and added, “When are we doing DNA test?”
    “In another post, Mr.

Terrence Ekot, on the platform “X” made a post thus: “Take a look at the stunning resemblance of mercy chinwo’s son and Nathaniel Bassey. Though duo has been working together on several projects in the past..what do you have to say?”

The lawyers said the social media posts by the four individuals amounted to complete assassination of Bassey’s character.

“These nefarious acts of these suspects, if not immediately dealt with, will continue to destroy our client’s image, injure his reputation, assassinate his character and cast aspersion on the good name built by our client over the years.

The lawyers said the alleged actions of the four individuals contravened sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.).

“The consequences of making such statements on social media have been known to tarnish the reputations of individuals, render marriages unstable, and many never recover from them. International reputation is an asset — both for the individual and for the nation — and it takes time to acquire.

“Consequently, we urge you to use your good offices to, in the interest of justice, investigate this matter, arrest, and bring the suspect to justice, which will serve as a deterrent to others.”

Harrowing video shows elephant charging at truck during African safari, killing American tourist (video)

A shocking video captured the moment a bull elephant in Zambia charged at a safari vehicle flipping it over several times and killing an 80-year-old American woman during an expedition.

The unidentified woman was among six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a photography tour Saturday, March 30, when they came under attack by the crazed animal, the Telegraph reported.

“At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning the six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant,” Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement.

Distressing footage captured by a passenger shows the elephant charging toward the vehicle as it cruises along a bush-lined road before suddenly stopping when its path was blocked. The passenger continues to record as the animal lunges at the vehicle and flips it over.

The elderly woman later died of her injuries while another woman remains hospitalized.

The other four guests were treated for minor injuries after the violent attack.

“Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Vincent said.

  • BREAKING: Tinubu Government Raises Electricity Tariff For Nigerians From N66 To N225 Kilowatt Per Hour

According to Oseni, customers in Band A who are those who enjoy 20 hours of electricity supply daily represent 15 percent of the 12million electricity customers in Nigeria.

The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has approved N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour tariff increment for Band A electricity consumers in the country.

The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musliu Oseni, who made this known at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday said the increase will see the customers paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

According to Oseni, customers in Band A who are those who enjoy 20 hours of electricity supply daily represent 15 percent of the 12million electricity customers in Nigeria.

Oseni further said that the NERC had also downgraded some customers on the Band A to Band B due to non-fulfilment of the required hours of electricity provided by the electricity distribution company.

“We currently have 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent now qualify as Band A feeders. These feeders only service 15 per cent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

“The commission has issued an order which is titled April supplementary order and the commission allows a 235 kilowatt per hour,” he said.

Oseni added that the upward review of the electricity tariff will not affect customers on the other Bands.

Homeowners confront squatter as he climbs through a window

A video captured the moment Texas homeowners confronted a squatter as he climbed through a window of their new San Antonio home while the intruder’s accomplice stood outside telling the homeowners he had rights to the property.

Abram and Yudith Mendez bought a property after which they hired an acquaintance to complete tile work then they drew up a contract allowing the man to stay at the house short-term.

Now, they say, he won’t leave.

“Squatters breaking into my house again through the window,” Yudith can be heard saying in a dramatic video the couple shared with News 4 San Antonio.

In the footage, the man is straddling a window in the couple’s home while a woman stands outside.

“He has rights. I can show you his rights,” the woman replies to Yudith before stepping through the window.

Abram showed the station a handwritten contract signed by the squatter, who told them he could do the tile work but needed a place to stay for a few days. In the contract, the man agrees to do the work and leave the home. Instead, he has torn apart the front room and barricaded the entrance, all while refusing to leave, the couple says.

“I believe today would be a month,” Abram said. “And he had his long game already in mind.”

While the man claims squatter’s rights, attorneys in Texas told the station that he has not met all the requirements to claim adverse possession, which would allow him to gain ownership of a property even without the owner’s permission.

Someone can claim adverse possession in Texas if they occupy the property with “color of title” (a legitimate claim) for at least three consecutive years; they occupy the property and have a recorded deed in their name, pay all property taxes and cultivate the land for at least five consecutive years, or they occupy the property and improve the land for at least 10 consecutive years.

So while the man could be considered a squatter, he can’t claim adverse possession of the property.

The Mendez family says they plan to move forward with an eviction.

“The intent behind adverse possession is to reward people who take care of the property and put it to good use,” said Nohl Bryant, a San Antonio attorney. “It is not designed to reward bad behavior.”

In New York state, squatters can claim a legal right to remain on a property without the owner’s permission after 10 years of living there. However, in New York City, a person only needs to be on the property for 30 days to claim squatter’s rights.
