  • EFCC drops money laundering charge, as Bobrisky pleads guilty to abuse of naira

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday afternoon dismissed the money laundering charges (counts five and six) brought against well-known transvestite Idris Okuneye, popularly known in social circles as Bobrisky.

Following the EFCC’s prosecuting attorney Suleiman Suleiman’s request that the court strike out counts five and six (money laundering allegations) and arraign Bobrisky on counts one through four, Justice Abimbola Awogboro subsequently dismissed the money laundering accusations against the crossdresser.

Suleiman said, “We have an agreement with the defendant, which will lead us to withdraw counts 5 and 6. In the circumstance, we’re humbly urging the court to strike out counts 5 and 6, leaving counts 1 to 4 alive”.

However, Bobrisky, who appeared before the court on a six-count charge brought against him by EFCC for naira abuse and other offenses, pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of abuse of the naira preferred against him.

When he was asked if he understood the charge that was read to him, he said,” Yes, I am guilty.”

Recall that on Thursday, the EFCC brought six charges against Bobrisky related to money laundering and naira abuse.

The crossdresser did not show up for the administrative bail that was awarded to him on Thursday, and he had been detained by the EFCC since Wednesday night.

  • FIP Asks Nigeria To Enact Stronger Laws As Substandard Medical Products Lead To 500,000 Deaths Annually In Africa

    Dr-Catherine-Duggan

The global pharmaceutical body, the International Pharmaceutical Federation ((FIP), has urged the Nigerian government to enact stronger laws to prevent substandard and counterfeit medical products from reaching the public.

Unlike in saner climes where drugs are not illegally hawked on commercial buses and street, the reverse is the case in Nigeria. The president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Professor Cyril Odianose Usifoh, posits that this creates room for those who sell fake and adulterated drugs to penetrate the value chain.

Hawkers, many of whom are illiterates and semi-illiterates, illegally sell drugs to unsuspecting members of the public on the basis of quantity and purchasing power of the buyer rather than the dosage required. This, experts say, constitutes danger to the nation’s population health.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FIP, Dr Catherine Duggan, who expressed concerns about this practice, said while drugs (medicines) can “treat or alleviate symptoms of an illness”, they can be harmful when not properly used.

In Africa, about 1 in every 10 medical products are said to be substandard or counterfeit, leading to nearly half a million deaths yearly in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. This is according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in its threat assessment report.

Dr. Duggan told THE WHISTLER that uncontrolled use of antibiotics, for instance, contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This, she said, makes treatment of infections harder, adding that this increases the risk of disease spread.

Citing the World Health Organization (WHO), Duggan said bacterial AMR was directly responsible for the death of 1.27 million people globally in 2019, and contributed to 4.95 million deaths.

“Through our policy statements and other resources, FIP has made clear that ministries of health, governmental regulatory agencies, pharmacists and pharmacy teams must play a major role in detecting and preventing substandard and falsified medical products reaching the public as well as in ensuring the appropriate use of antibiotics through antimicrobial stewardship. We believe that developing stronger laws and ensuring compliance to existing legislation is needed so that medicines are only available from reliable and qualified sources: pharmacies with a pharmacist present,” the FIP’s CEO told THE WHISTLER.

“FIP, as the global leader of the pharmacy profession, is seriously concerned about the risks posed by medicines supplied from unregulated sources. Medicines are a special type of product in that although they can treat or alleviate symptoms of an illness, they also have the potential to do harm if used incorrectly. Thus, supply requires advice from pharmacists, as medicines experts, to be available to ensure patient safety. This is not the case when medicines are sold outside of pharmacies.

The medicines supply chain through pharmacies is strongly regulated, protecting people from falsified and substandard medicines. It has been estimated, for example, that in Africa alone, approximately 1 in 10 medical products are substandard or falsified, leading to nearly 500,000 deaths annually in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. The unregulated use of antibiotics in particular also contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. According to the World Health Organization, bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019 and contributed to 4.95 million deaths.”

Duggan noted that counterfeit drugs and AMR are major global health challenges “that FIP is working on in collaboration with partners. For many years, pharmacists have consistently been named among the top five most trusted professionals in national surveys. Pharmacists also uphold a duty of care to the public, with well-being as their primary concern. As members of a registered profession, pharmacists often belong to professional associations, such as the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, which work to support them in good practice and to promote the highest professional and ethical standards in the profession.”

She called for intensive public enlightenment campaigns to discourage people from patronizing hawkers.

“It is important for the public to understand the grave risks to health posed by obtaining medicines from unauthorised sources, and campaigns to raise awareness are a way of helping people to think twice before buying a medicine from hawkers,” Duggan added.

Despite the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) warnings against drug hawking, the practice persist. Hawkers have now found safe haven on commercial buses for the illegal trade in Lagos State. These drugs are suspiciously cheaper than the usual drugs you buy from regular stores and pharmacies. A recent investigation by THE WHISTLER shows that these itinerant sellers do not have health-related background and usually do not give their names or address of their office. So, in the event that one reacts negatively to any of these drugs, it is almost impossible to trace the seller.

Mr. Friday Ocharifu, a pharmacist, believes that the dangerous practice thrives in Nigeria because of the failure of the government to shut open drug markets. Ocharifu called on the government to criminalize and enforce ban on drug hawking.

He said: “The practice booms in Nigeria because of the failure of the government to close down open drug markets, closing open drug market prevents drugs from finding their way into the wrong hands (quacks).

“Government should criminalize and enforce a ban on drug hawking where severe punishment awaits defaulters.”

  • EXCLUSIVE: Labour Party Edo Gov Ticket In Jeopardy As Akpata’s Running Mate Submits False Information To Electoral Body, INEC; Claims She Was Born Same Year She Obtained First School Certificate

The leadership of the Labour Party in Edo State has reportedly summoned an emergency meeting.

The meeting will have in attendance the party’s governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata and his running mate, Mrs Oluyinka Faith Alufokhai over concerns that some of the information contained in their forms EC9 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may have been false and is capable of jeopardising their candidacies.

INEC recently published the list of governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the September 21, 2023 election in Edo State.

The list displayed at the INEC office in Benin City contained particulars of candidates and their political parties in line with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 which requires the electoral body to publish particulars of candidates for public scrutiny.

There are strong indications that the LP Deputy Governorship candidate Mrs Alufokhai may have submitted false information on her form EC9 as displayed by the commission.

On page 2 of her affidavit sworn at the Epe Division of the High Court on March 22, 2024, Alufokhai stated that she was born on May 18, 1981 in Imo State; yet on page 4 of the same affidavit, she claimed that she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate in 1981 – the same year she was born.

    Lp

SaharaReporters reports that under the law, anybody who gives false information on oath has committed an offence of perjury and is liable under Section 118 of the Criminal Code to 14 years imprisonment.

It was gathered that the Labour Party governorship candidate, Akpata, had been unsettled since the discrepancies were noticed.

SaharaReporters learnt that the possibility that it could have been a mistake was considered. However, it was also learnt that Akpata had been lobbying to replace his running mate before the April 15, 2024 deadline INEC had fixed as the last day for the replacement of candidates.

However, Section 33 of the Electoral Act states that “…a political party shall not be allowed to change or substitute its candidate whose name has been submitted…except in the case of death or withdrawal by the candidate”.

SaharaReporters learnt that in turn, Mrs Alufokhai has informed the party that she has no intention of withdrawing; and has pushed back at Akpata, claiming he should be the one replaced because he deposed in his affidavit that he had not only taken up a second nationality in a foreign country but that he had also sworn an oath of total allegiance to Vanuatu’s President.

“How can anyone be talking about primary school certificate when they themselves have sworn that they are loyal to a foreign country? Olu should remove the log in his eye before he comes to harass me,” a member of the party executive council said he overheard Mrs Alufokhai saying at its secretariat in Abuja.

Akpata, who is a cousin of Governor Godwin Obaseki, is from the majority Edo South. He seems to have tried to play a game of numbers when he decided to pick his running mate from Edo North – the second-largest voting population bloc in the state.

Sources informed SaharaReporters that Akpata’s controversial emergence as the LP governorship candidate in the alleged heavily dollarized party primaries meant he had to concede the selection of his deputy to Julius Abure and other party chieftains as part of his commitment to the reconciliation process.

According to the sources, they reportedly convinced him that Mrs. Yinka Alufokhai “was a powerful grassroots mobiliser; and that as a young woman with Igbo roots, the Obidient Movement would easily adopt her”.

Many Labour Party chieftains have faulted the choice of Mrs Alufokhai, who was sacked a year ago as Owan West Local Government Chairman for allegations of fraud and anti-party activities. Sources close to Akpata say he is now convinced she is part of a plot concocted by the LP National Chairman Abure to sabotage his ticket after the latter’s public humiliation and arrest days before the LP governorship primaries in Benin City, one of the sources said.

Before Akpata emerged as LP candidate, Abure had publicly stated that he believed that for equity, fairness and justice, power should rotate to Edo Central. Several LP aspirants have since passed public votes of no-confidence on the LP primaries and the LP candidate.

On his part, Akpata is also enmeshed in deep controversy over the Oath of Allegiance he swore to another country and revealed in the particulars displayed by INEC.

    Akp

In a shocking revelation, Akpata swore an Oath of Allegiance to Vanuatu – a small island country with a population of about 350,000 people. To become an honorary citizen which gives you a Vanuatu passport, one is expected to make a ‘minimum donation’ of $US130,000 to the government. Vanuatuan passports provide visa-free travel to 113 countries.

While Nigerian law does not prohibit Nigerians from taking dual citizenships; swearing an oath of allegiance to a foreign power might disqualify a candidate from seeking public office.

The National Working Committee of the party is jittery over the revelations and has summoned an emergency meeting to address the new developments.

Meanwhile, efforts made by SaharaReporters to get the reaction of Mrs Alufokhai on the discrepancies were unsuccessful as she neither answered her calls nor replied to a text message sent to her, requesting her comment.
