Members of the sect trooped out in their number shortly after the Juma’at prayer at the National Mosque defied the presence of the heavily armed security agents who had surrounded the mosque to prevent the sect from embarking on the rally.

A massive protest is currently going on in Abuja the nation’s capital by the Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shi’ites to mark the International Qudus in solidarity with Palestine.

Members of the sect trooped out in their number shortly after the Juma’at prayer at the National Mosque defied the presence of the heavily armed security agents who had surrounded the mosque to prevent the sect from embarking on the rally.

The placards carrying protesters were chanting “Freedom For Palestine” and “Death to Israel.”

A member of the group, Yahaya Suleiman, who spoke to SaharaReporters, said the rally was aimed at showing support and love to their brothers and sisters who have been under the siege of Israel.

“We condemn the continued incursion into Al-qsa Mosque and occupation of Palestine by the apartheid Zionist Israel regime and we support people of Palestine in their just struggle.”

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson of the Academic Forum of the Movement, Abdullahi Musa confirmed the gruesome killing of two of their members by the Nigerian Police who opened fire on them in Kaduna during the rally.

  • Hike In Tariff Will Guarantee Efficient Power Sector-FG

    AEDC-Area-Office-Karu

The federal government has assured Nigerians that the tariff review on electricity was a strategic step towards a more sustainable, efficient, and equitable electricity sector.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who spoke at the 4th Ministerial Briefing Session held in Abuja on Friday, stated that the Tinubu administration is sustaining electricity subsidy as only 15 percent of the electricity consumer population are affected by the recently announced hike in electricity tariffs.

He maintained that since 85 percent of Nigerian consumers are still enjoying electricity subsidy, it justifies the Tinubu administration’s credential as a pro-people democratic government.

“Misconceptions and concerns around the tariff review are understandable. However, let me reassure every Nigerian that this review is a strategic step towards a more sustainable, efficient, and equitable electricity sector.

“It lays the groundwork for significant improvements in service delivery, infrastructure development, and economic prosperity. Our focus must, therefore, remain steadfast on ensuring that the electricity sector’s transformation benefits all Nigerians, supports our industries, and propels our nation towards its bright future,” he said

The minister also added that the President had signed the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, into law to further strengthen the governance structure in the power sector.

“You would also recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, into law to further strengthen the governance structure in the power sector and mandate the GENCOs to set aside 5 percent of their actual annual operating expenditure from the preceding year for the development of the host communities.

“The act also removed electricity from the exclusive list to empower the state government to generate and distribute electricity to residents,” he said.

The briefing which also featured Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC) Oseni Musiliu, threw more light on the recently approved tariff review by NERC.

Chidi Odinkalu’s Reckless Commentaries on EFCC

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to some reckless commentaries made by a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu on the arrest of Idris Okuneye(a.k.a Bobrisky) by the Commission, describing it as evidence of idleness or an abuse of power .

The Commission views such commentaries from Odinkalu as unbecoming of a former head of a major government agency.

Okuneye was arrested and arraigned by the Commission on the basis of clear cases of abuse of the Naira to which he has pleaded guilty.

Odinkalu has a right to free speech as a Nigerian but such a right should be exercised with decorum and responsibility. The Commission would not hesitate to take appropriate legal actions against such uncouth commentaries against its lawful mandate by anyone.

Odinkalu is warned and advised to ventilate his rascally opinions more responsibly in future situations.
