  • Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Ejimakor Raises Alarm Over Secret Recording Of Conversations With Detained IPOB Leader By DSS Agents

Ejimakor cited an example of how the DSS once mistakenly filed in court, a photograph of him and Kanu taken during one of his meetings with the IPOB leader.

Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has raised the alarm over secret recordings of his meetings and conversations with his client by the officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ejimakor cited an example of how the DSS once mistakenly filed in court, a photograph of him and Kanu taken during one of his meetings with the IPOB leader. He said he and his client always whisper in fear because they don’t know who might be spying on them and recording their conversations.

He said, “We have concerns about the privacy of our conversations. There was a day I was consulting with him (Kanu) with another colleague and they (DSS) took a secret photograph of myself. They accidentally filed that photograph as part of their proof of evidence in court.

“We were surprised that they were taking secret photographs of us, and if you go into the room, you will not see any camera. Evidently you have hidden eyes, hidden cameras and everything. What else do they have? Eavesdropping equipment, secret listening devices or what?

“We whisper in fear and sometimes you just have to pull him (Kanu) to say something or even pull yourself out to say something because you are ever afraid someone is somewhere secretly recording you.

“How can we conduct effective defence under this condition? It is not possible.”

On whether they are confident that Kanu will get a fair trial, Ejimakor said that their confidence is zero under the current circumstances that encourage profound interference with Kanu’s access to his lawyers and adequate facilities to conduct his defence.

Ejimakor said, “The confidence is zero. Under present circumstances, our confidence is zero.

“There is no way Nnamdi Kanu can get a fair trial under the current conditions of his detention which encourage the profound interference with his access to counsels and adequate facilities to conduct his defence. There is not going to be any fair trial in that kind of scenario. Impossible!”

  • Electricity Workers Threaten ‘Strong Action’ If NERC Fails To Reverse Tariff Hike

    NERC

The leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has vowed to withdraw the services of its members that the Federal Government intended to use to enforce the electricity tariff hike.

The NUEE, through its National President, Engineer Adebiyi Adeyeye, kicked against the hike in traffic of electricity in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday.

“As the representative body for employees across the Generation, Transmission, and Distribution sectors, it is our duty to address matters that directly impact our members and the public.

“Upon thorough review of the Commission’s announcement, it has become evident that the decision to escalate tariffs does not align with the interests of the masses.

“NUEE vehemently opposes any policy that burdens the Nigerian people, particularly the less privileged.

“I am deeply concerned about the burden this increase places on our members and the general masses, particularly during a challenging economic climate like this.

“While we recognize the need for investment in the power sector, I believe a focus on improved efficiency and reduced energy losses should be prioritized before further tariff adjustment,” said Adeyeye.

He continued “The proposed tariff hikes, especially for Band A consumers, will disproportionately affect everyone that rely heavily on electricity for their daily needs.

“This shift in pricing dynamics threatens to exacerbate inequalities, favouring the affluent while placing undue strain on the less fortunate segments of society.”

He continued “The rising cost of electricity directly impacts household budgets, forcing difficult choices between essential needs and paying electricity bills.

“For businesses, the increased cost of electricity translates to higher production costs. This can lead to price hikes for goods and services, further fueling inflation and hindering economic growth.”

Furthermore, the NUEE president asserted that the intended benefits of the tariff adjustment do not extend to the union’s members in the distribution sector, most especially the legacy staff.

Instead, it appears to serve the interests of a select few within the DISCOs, disregarding the plight of workers facing delayed salaries and pensions, ugly infusion of high targets for the staff and threatening them to meet up with at all costs, amongst other financial hardships.

“It is worthy of note, that the timing of this tariff increase feels particularly insensitive given the current economic situation. Many Nigerians are already facing financial hardship, and this additional expense adds unnecessary stress.

“As such, no consultation was made with any stakeholder before flagrantly violating the provisional power sector reform act, 2023 as amended.

“Moreover, much of the DISCOs electrical infrastructure dates back decades. Overtime, their transformers, distribution poles, and distribution networks deteriorate to inefficiencies and increased power losses. Thereby, reducing the wheeling capacity of the Transmission Company of Nigeria of about 12,000MW to just about 4,000MW.

“Regular maintenance is crucial for keeping the circuit in good working order. However, lack of proper funding and resources which looms in the DISCOs often lead to neglected maintenance further exacerbating the problems.

“Significant amount of power is lost during distribution due to outdated and poorly maintained power equipments and 33/11kV lines. These losses can be as high as 40% in some areas, significantly reducing the amount of electricity that reaches consumers. How will the DISCOs neglect all these, look away from the changes they should have made to the power sector after 13 years of privatization and move on to increasing electricity tariffs? It’s not out of place to have the government subsidize electricity. Whence in some advanced countries, they still do that till now.”

He added that “the recent electricity tariff hike is a blatant disregard for the economic struggles of Nigerian workers. Not even in a society where minimum wages are ambivalently doubtful.

“If the government fails to address the crippling cost of electricity, NUEE will not hesitate to take strong action, including the swift withdrawal of our members expected to be used by DISCOs to impose the tariff hike on the good people, to protect the livelihood of our members.”

  • Peter Obi Denies Plan To Dump Labour Party Amid Crisis, Says Higher Electricity Tariff For Band A Customers Is Normal

Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election has denied that he is planning to leave the party.

In March, a former spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, Daniel Bwala, said Obi was planning to leave the Labour Party and join a former Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Bwala, who made the allegation in a post on his X handle, said Obi was planning to leave the Labour Party following the current crisis in the party with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) threatening to take over the party.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State in the Southeast region, joined the Labour Party in May 2023 in the buildup to the 2023 general elections following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Obi was absent at the party’s national convention during which Julius Abure was re-elected as the party’s national chairman.

During an X Space session, Obi said that he didn’t attend the event because the party’s leadership failed to heed his appeal for wider consultation with relevant stakeholders before the exercise.

Reacting to media reports following his grouse with the leadership crisis and speculations that he might defect before the 2027 election.

After donating a borehole to a ram market in Tike Pantami, on Sunday, Obi denied the allegation, saying, “No, there is no such thing.”

The former Anambra governor urged the people to unite, saying he believed in peace.

“Our concentration should be on peace and I believe that we will resolve all situations,” he said.

Reacting to reports that he and former Kaduna governor, Nasir E-Rufai would soon be joining the Social Democratic Party, Obi said he was “more interested now in Nigeria’s success today than tomorrow”.

He said, “We are always concentrating on the election rather than what Nigerians are going through. My commitment is about Nigerians living in a better society and given a better life.”

Regarding the recent hike in electricity tariff for Band A customers, Obi called for the provision of remedy, especially in poor areas.

He noted that “everywhere in the world those living in Band A areas pay more while those in rural areas are subsidised”.

  • Israel Pulls Troop Out Of Gaza Six Months Into Hamas War

    Israel-and-Hamas-war

Six months into the Israel-Hamas war, the Israeli military says it has withdrawn its ground troops from southern Gaza, including the city of Khan Yunis.

However, the military in a statement on Sunday, said a significant force of its troops will continue to operate in the rest of the besieged Gaza Strip.

According to the statement, there was no use of the military’s presence in southern Gaza, but an Israeli brigade typically made up of a few thousand soldiers, would besiege the Gaza Strip.

“The 98th commando division has concluded its mission in Khan Yunis,” the army said in a statement to AFP. “The division left the Gaza Strip to recuperate and prepare for future operations.

“A significant force led by the 162nd division and the Nahal brigade continues to operate in the Gaza Strip and will preserve the IDF’s freedom of action and its ability to conduct precise intelligence-based operations,” the statement said.

Citing the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, displaced Palestinians from Khan Yunis may now be able to return to their homes after sheltering in the far southern city of Rafah.

Khan Yunis has been the scene of fierce fighting for months, with relentless bombardment reducing swathes of the city to rubble.

Recall that on October 7, 2023, the war in Gaza was sparked by the Hamas attack and resulted in the deaths of 1,170 Israelis and foreigners, most of them civilians.

  • Father faked death to avoid paying child support and now faces lengthy jail time

Father faked death to avoid paying child support and now faces lengthy jail time

A Kentucky father has admitted to faking his death to avoid paying his ex-wife more than $100,000 in outstanding child support.

Jesse Kipf, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated identity theft and one count of computer fraud in federal court on March 29, according to the plea agreement obtained by Law & Crime.

Kipf was indicted by the United States Attorney’s Office in November after investigators with the FBI in Louisville, Kentucky, the Department of the Attorney General for Hawaii, and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office caught wind of his cyber crimes, according to a press release.

Kipf admitted to completing a Hawaii Death Certificate Worksheet in Jan. 2023, where he created a fake death certificate for himself and “assigned himself as the medical certifier for the case and certified that case.”

Prosecutors argued that his motivation to commit the cyber crimes was fueled by his desire to avoid paying “his outstanding child support obligations to his ex-wife,” the plea agreement states.

The very-much-alive father then “infiltrated other states’ death registry systems” using stolen credentials, according to the plea agreement.

“He applied a digital signature for [the physician], providing his name, title, and license number. This resulted in the Defendant being registered as deceased in many government databases.”

However, his illegal online endeavours didn’t end with faking his death. Kipf also used the credentials he stole to gain access to private business, government, and corporate networks with the goal of trying to sell the sensitive information he fraudulently obtained to other crooks online.

“In doing so, the Defendant caused damage to multiple computer networks and stole the identities of numerous individuals,” according to the plea agreement.

In January, Kipf was charged with computer fraud stemming from the data breaches of GuestTek Interactive Entertainment in February 2023 and Milestone Inc. in June 2023.

Authorities estimated the damages caused by Kipf for skipping out on his child support payments and gaining access to the networks exceeded more than $195,000, court documents show.

The computer-hacking father agreed to pay restitution of $3,500 to the state of Hawaii, $56,247 to Milestone Inc., $19,653 to GuestTek Interactive Entertainment, and $116,357 to the California child support agency, according to the plea deal.

He also agreed to forfeit his electronic devices and $16,218 in gold and silver coins. Kipf was initially charged with five counts of computer fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft, which carried a maximum of 30 years behind bars before many of those charges were dropped after he took the plea deal.

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 12 in federal court in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Kipf now faces a maximum of five years in federal prison for aggravated identity theft and a minimum of two years for computer fraud — both of which carry a steep fine of $250,000, according to the plea deal.
