  • Sowore Slams Nigerian Police Chief Over Planned ‘Police Award Ceremony’ Amid Poor Salaries For Personnel, N1.5Million Gratuity

Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, has decried the poor salaries and the N1.5 million gratuity being given to police officers and retired police personnel respectively by the Nigerian government.

Sowore, the former candidate the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, said it is disheartening that men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force put their lives on the line for 35 years only to get N1.5 million (about $1,000) while corrupt average senators take home at least N15 million monthly.

Sowore said this while reacting to a video in which the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced that there would be an award night for some officers of the Nigeria Police.

According to Egbetokun, despite the sacrifices made by the police personnel, they are hardly rewarded.

Egbetokun said the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony would come up on April 15, 2024, at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

However, Sowore said that this “explains the wrong priorities that have bedeviled ‘leadership’ in Nigeria.”

He wrote on his X handle on Sunday, “Recently, it came to light that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) cadre of the Nigeria Police Force takes home a retirement gratuity of less than or about $1000 after serving their nation for 35 years rather than looking at how to fix the remuneration of the rank and file of the Nigeria Police the IG of Police is planning an “award night” at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja to reward some of their loyal boys and/or girls.

“This is going to be another time-wasting, money-gobbling jamboree in Abuja that the police don’t need.”

“All policemen and by extension civil servants need a living wage, adequate housing, dedicated and professional transportation, life insurance, proper training and retraining, hazard allowances, and a decent environment of work that humanizes them and most importantly a leadership that understands police work, not an “award night” for loyal police bootlickers!” he added in the post.

Also, in a March interview Arise News’ ‘The Morning Show, Sowore who said he didn’t like the police because of their human rights violations and assaults, even against him, noted that despite his ugly experiences with the police, he thought it was unconscionable for retired police personnel to be getting N1.5 million as gratuity.

He said a police officer who stopped him in Lagos and disclosed the amount retired personnel received as gratuities to him.

He said, “I thought he wanted to shake me down, and when I lowered my glass, he said Mr Sowore, I have something to tell you. Do you know that we are being paid N1.5 million gratuity and I said that must be some very gratuitous insult of a gratuity.

“That was my reply and I started tweeting right from there. It is very interesting that most people didn’t know this. It is also interesting that the police in this country will protect with their lives the people who are underpaying them.

“As I mentioned an average senator is taking home N15 million a month, he will take a police officer, do you know how many gratuities of police officers is the one-month salary of a senator? “You then go back to governors who served for four years and they have all the allowances and gratuities that you can’t even finish counting them.

“The one in Lagos, Tinubu, who started it, had to build a house in Lagos and Abuja. In fact, the house in Lagos is so luxurious that he was staying there before he moved to Aso Rock.

“He is entitled to change of cars every two years, he is entitled to police, DSS, he is entitled to N100 million if he goes for medicals in Nigeria and if he goes abroad, the state will be responsible for that.”

He lamented that such states have to spend billions of naira for former governors “who probably also stole more than enough while in office”.

  • LP kicks against NLC’s planned stakeholders’ meeting, says it’s by ‘drama boys’, ‘attention seekers’

The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP), has dismissed a proposed Labour Party stakeholders meeting organized by the Political Commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said this in response to a trending letter of invitation to the event scheduled to hold on Monday.

Iloh described the organizers of the proposed meeting as “drama boys” and “attention seekers.”

He said: “It has come to the knowledge of the leadership of the Labour Party of a letter of invitation trending in some sections of the media purportedly written by some desperate characters in the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC inviting some Nigerians to an illegal stakeholders meeting scheduled to hold on Monday, in Abuja, wherein they propose to appoint a caretaker committee for the Labour Party.

“This meeting being organized by some drama boys and attention seeking personalities in the NLC is illegal as we have not authorized it and it is not supported by any law in the land and therefore its outcome, a nullity.

“We are therefore calling on all genuine members of the party to disregard and shun the meeting.

“Few days ago, the Federal Government raise the electricity tariff to about 300 percent and the NLC has neither responded to it or has called out its members to protest the increment but it is quick to convene an unlawful meeting of disgruntled members who are not even party members.

“We are calling on the law enforcement agencies to rise up to the occasion and abort this gathering which may likely degenerate to public nuisance.

“NLC does not have any proprietary right over the Labour Party and therefore cannot continue to lay claim to its ownership.”

  • Wadume: Convicted Kidnap Kingpin Regains Freedom After 20 Months In Kuje Prison

    Wadume

Hamisu Bala, a convicted kidnap kingpin popularly known as Wadume, received a grand welcome in his hometown of Ibbi, Taraba State, on Sunday.

Wadume, who was arrested by men of the Intelligence Response Team of Inspector-General of Police in 2019, was released from Kuje prison in Abuja, on Friday, according to reports.

Upon his arrival in Ibbi, Wadume was welcomed by thousands, including youths and women, as he made his way through the town.

During his visit to the Chief of Ibbi chiefdom, Alhaji Salihu Danbawuro, Wadume expressed gratitude for the chief’s support during his trial, stating that the chief and his subjects stood by him and prayed for his safety and well-being while in prison.

The chief, Saliha Danbawuro, told Wadume that he and his subjects were happy that he is out of prison.

“I and the entire people of Ibbi chiefdom are happy that Hamisu Wadume is now back in Ibbi, his hometown,” the chief said, according to Daily Trust.

Wadume’s arrest in 2019 was marred by controversy when soldiers attacked the police team transporting him, resulting in casualties.

The soldiers attached to Battalion 93, Ibbi-Takum road, led by Tijjani Balarabe, allegedly set Wadume free and subsequently killed some of the officers who arrested him, on August 6, 2019..

Balarabe had confessed to using a spoon to remove Wadume’s handcuffs. After his illegal release, Wadume was rearrested two weeks later in Kano.

In August 2022, he was convicted by a Federal High Court in Abuja and sentenced to seven years in prison for escaping lawful custody and unlawfully dealing in prohibited firearms. The charges of kidnapping were not proven against him in court.

During investigations, it was established that Wadume supplied arms and ammunition to terrorists in Northeast Nigeria and cattle rustlers in the north.

  • Nigeria Police Arrest Imo Hotel Owner For Torturing, Locking Alleged Phone Thief In Room With ‘Fumy Generator’ Till He Died

The Imo State Police Command has arrested the 38-year-old owner of a guest house for the alleged murder of a youth.

The guest house owner identified as Ibe Obasi and two others at large were accused of torturing and locking Ebuka Udemba in a generator room where he died.

A statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, on Sunday, disclosed that Obasi had been arrested for his role in the tragic incident that occurred on Saturday.

Okoye said, “Operatives of Obowo Divisional Headquarters have arrested the owner of ‘Our Guest House’, Umulogho, Obowo, Ibe Obasi, 38yrs, who was allegedly involved in the murder of a 25-year-old Ebuka Udemba, ‘m’, an indigene of Umuokpa in Obowo LGA of Imo State.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was tortured and locked up inside the generator room of the said guest house by the suspect and two others at large, where he suffocated to death, on the accusation of stealing a customer’s handset.

“Accordingly, the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Owerri, for consolidation of the ongoing investigation. He has provided useful information that will assist the determined operatives in arresting all the suspects in connection to the case.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID to carry out a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the remote circumstances surrounding the death of the victim and ensure that all the suspects involved are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“While commiserating with the families, friends, and relatives of the victim, the Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the cruel act and calls on the people of Obowo LGA, particularly residents of Umulogho to refrain from taking laws into their own hands as the command is on top of the situation and has commenced a thorough investigation to apprehend the suspects linked to the case of murder and bring them to book.”

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) had lamented the alleged ongoing indiscriminate mass arrests, harassment and brutalisation of people and residents of Umulogho Obowo community in Imo State.

It noted that this was on account of a protest by youths of the community over the alleged murder of a youth of the community by a military officer in collusion with the management of a hotel where the victim was said to have been an auxiliary staff member until he was murdered.

Okechukwu Nwanguma, the Executive Director of the organisation in a statement on Sunday said the information at its disposal is that the youth was accused of stealing a cell phone belonging to a military officer who lodged at a hotel known as ‘Our Guesthouse’ located at Umulogho Obowo, Imo State where he was working until he was murdered.

RULAAC said, “That upon being summoned and confronted with the allegation of stealing the phone, the man denied knowing anything about the missing phone.

“That the owner of the hotel simply identified as Ibeh claimed he went to a native doctor with the man and the native doctor confirmed that Chukwuebuka stole the phone.

“That Chukwuebuka continued to deny the allegation of stealing the phone and he was consequently beaten and tortured in a bid to force him to confess, and was finally locked up in a small room where the hotel’s diesel generator is housed with heavy fumes emanating from the diesel engine.

“That the following day, the hotel management opened the generator room and found the man dead, apparently from a combination of the torture inflicted on him and suffocation.

“That Ibeh, the owner of the guest house contacted the military officer who arrived at the Guest house later and they took the deceased boy’s corpse and dumped it in a cassava farm near the guest house.”

  • ‘We Will Right Abure’s Wrong On Monday’— NLC Blows Hot Ahead  LP’s Stakeholders’ Meeting

L-R NLC President, Joe Ajaero, Labour Party logo

The crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) continued to worsen, as the party is blowing hot on the alleged NLC stakeholder’s impeachment meeting against Julius Abure.

The NLC has been advocating for Abure’s removal, accusing the LP chairman of attempting to hold an unauthorised national convention in Abia State to keep himself in office.

But Abure in March 2024 was re-elected as the National Chairman of the LP at a convention held in Anambra State.

This prompted the Congress to refer to the authenticity of his position as an ‘illegality’. It stated that the election result cannot be upheld as two separate court rulings in 2024 nullified the legitimacy of Abure’s National Working Committee (NWC).

Subsequent development on the issue will be a stakeholder meeting by the NLC on Monday to take a decision on the leadership crisis rocking the LP and Abure’s return as chairman.

The NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, confirmed the development to THE WHISTLER on Sunday.

However, the National Publicity Secretary, LP, Obiora Ifoh in a statement said the ‘Proposed NLC Stakeholders meeting is illegal.

He said, “It has come to the knowledge of the leadership of the Labour Party of a letter of invitation trending in some sections of the media purportedly written by some desperate characters in the Nigeria Labour Congress, inviting some Nigerians to an illegal stakeholders meeting scheduled to hold on Monday in Abuja wherein they propose to appoint a caretaker committee for the Labour Party.

While calling on its members and law enforcement agencies to stop the planned meeting, the  LP said, “We are calling on the law enforcement agencies to rise to the occasion and abort this gathering which may likely degenerate into a public nuisance.”

Reiterating the Congress position, Upah told THE WHISTLER, “It is within the right of the NLC to do the right thing, to right the wrongs of Abure, to follow constitutionalism, responsibility, in furtherance of the provisions of the consent judgement.

“It is within the right of the NLC, and there is a meeting tomorrow”.
