They were jailed on Wednesday April 3, 2024 on one- count separate charges bordering on cybercrimes.

The convicts are Aaron Barnabas (a.k.a Helena Antonio) and Bosan Godwin Yacham(a.k.a Will Parfitt).

The one -count charge for Barnabas reads:” Aaron Barnabas (a.k.a Helena Antonio) Sometimes in October, 2023 in Kaduna, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, impersonated one Helena Antonio on Facebook, obtained the sum of $200 (Two Hundred United States of America Dollars) from Mauro Nunes and unsuspecting persons, and you thereby committed cheating by impersonation, an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code Law, 2017 of Kaduna State and punishable under Section 309 of the same Law.”

The convicts’ journey to the Correctional Centre began when they were arrested at Keffi, Nasarawa state following a sting operation conducted by Operatives of the Kaduna Zonal Command working on intelligence.

Investigations showed that they fraudulently assumed identities of foreigners to create fictitious social media accounts to defraud unsuspecting victims of their hard- earned money.

  • Again, Appeal Judge Denies Trump’s Request To Delay April 15 Trial

    Donald-Trump

A New York Appeal Court sitting presided by Associate Justice Cynthia Kern on Tuesday denied former President Donald Trump’s request to delay the start of his New York hush money trial.

Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records over the reimbursement of hush money payments made before the 2016 election

In efforts to forestall his trial on Monday, Trump’s attorney Emil Bove had urged the court to postpone the trial with a motion of venue change, arguing that Trump cannot get a fair jury in New York.

But Bove’s motion to stop the trial was denied when Associate Justice Lizbeth González after hearing Monday’s arguments, said there is no further argument on the motion to change the venue.

Tuesday’s ruling came roughly one hour after Bove argued his client is entitled to a stay of the proceedings while he challenges the “unconstitutional” partial gag order handed down by Judge Juan Merchan against Trump last month and expanded days later.

According to CNN, a full appeal’s court panel will still consider Trump’s petition, though it will not delay the start of the trial.

“Motions are due on Monday, the day the jury selection is scheduled to start. The panel of judges will rule on whether to stay the trial after they receive briefs that day, which means in theory the trial could be paused after it starts, though that possibility appears remote.

“The panel will decide about the gag order itself after April 29, when submissions are due. The panel of judges will rule on the written papers; there will be no oral arguments,” the paper was quoted as saying.

With Trump pleading not guilty to the 34 counts, this would be the second failed attempt by Bove to stop the hush money trial this week.

  • Funke Akindele breaks down in tears as she responds to claims she abandoned late actress Jumoke Aderounmu

Funke Akindele breaks down in tears as she responds to claims she abandoned late actress Jumoke Aderounmu

Actress Funke Akindele has responded to allegations that she abandoned her former cast member, Jumoke Aderounmu. Late Jumoke died on April 6 at the age of 40 and was popular for her role in Jenifa’s diary series produced and directed by Funke.

As the news of her death broke on social media on Friday, fans and colleagues in the industry took to social media to mourn her. Funke also mourned her, expressing her shock at the demise of the young actress.

Hours later, Late Jumoke’s brother took to social media to throw subliminal shots at Funke, insinuating she abandoned his sister in her time of need but was quick to come online to mourn her.

His post elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some argued that he should not feel entitled to Funke’s money and help, others attacked the actress and even wished death on her loved ones.

Reacting to the backlash she has received, Funke in a live IG session this afternoon denied having any knowledge that Jumoke was going through a hard time. She mentioned that she contacted another actor, Jide Awobona, who was close to late Jumoke and asked after her from him and that the said Jide later got back to her saying Jumoke said she needed people to call her for jobs which she, Funke, promised to do whenever there was an opening.

“Someone made a comment on my page just now that I will bury my children. What have I done wrong? The late Jumoke Aderounmu, I met her years ago as an actress, gave her sole roles. She featured in Jenifa’s diary and Industreet and that was it. She acted her role, got paid and left.

From the blues I just messaged Jide Awobona because himself and Jumoke were close and I asked of her and he said she is okay. I then told him to call her and ask after her and he got back to me saying all she wanted is for people to be calling her for jobs. I said fine we will call her for jobs”

The mum of two said she was alerted by one Pascal of the post late Jumoke’s brother did claiming his late sister was abandoned

‘’I know he is grieving, It is not easy to lose someone. I have lost my mum. Nobody knows what I went through. I went through a lot. I was depressed losing my mum. I reached out to the guy. I said ‘I am so sorry you lost your sister I feel your pain Nobody told me that your sister was sick. Pascaline did not tell me anything. I don’t turn deaf ears to people that are in need.”

She said she likes to help but do not like to publicize it.

‘’I had to do this as it has to do with somebody’s life. Personally, you do not know what I am going through. I work hard round the clock. I don’t beef any film maker. Do not forget I have got my trying moments too. During Covid, remember. My mum passed on, went into politics I was backlashed, Marriage. Somebody now said you will lose your children. I think that is too much.

I had to do this live video because it has to do with Jumoke. May her soul rest in perfect peace, I tried, Jide can testify”

  • Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers ‘Denied Access To Detained IPOB Leader,’ Lament Seizure Of Documents By Nigerian Secret Police, DSS

The legal team of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has lamented that they have been repeatedly denied access to their client.

Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since the extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021.

The legal team led by Barrister Aloy Ejimakor raised the alarm in a press briefing, saying the DSS not only denied them access to Kanu but constantly seized every legal document they took to the IPOB leader.

According to the lawyers, the DSS personnel scan and photocopy the documents and in most cases, never return them to the owner.

Kanu’s constitutional right as provided by Section 36(6) paragraph C of the Constitution has been violated.

During a press briefing, one of Kanu’s lawyers, Barrister Jude Ugwuanyi said, “We are ready to defend Nnamdi Kanu. The offences for which he is standing trial are not such that there is no defence. We have strong defences but our fear is the way and manner we are being denied access to him.

“As lawyers, we are entitled to meeting with our client, Nnamdi Kanu, liaising with him, discussing and hearing from him what defence he has against those charges.

“But each time we make an effort towards seeing him, we are restrained by the DSS. I’m a victim.

“The allegations against Nnamdi Kanu are personal allegations against him and he is the only person that can tell his lawyers what he did and what he did not do and what line of defences he could rely on.

“That is why Section 36(6) paragraph c says that as an accused person, he is entitled to a lawyer of his choice.

“In an attempt to utilize that opportunity, we go to him to hear from him and get his line of defences because we were not there when he is said to have committed these offences. But we are not allowed to liaise with him.”

Ugwuanyi further said, “If we go with documents for him to tell us his reactions to those documents, those documents are seized from us. They are scanned, photocopied and in the long run, we may not even get those documents back.

“If we have something the charges said he did and ask Kanu for his reactions, we are not allowed to take the documents to him. They are seized from us and if we want to take notes, the DSS insists on a limited number of pages we can write.

“These things affect the facilities the constitution says he is entitled to. That is our fear. Where we are not allowed access to him or even when we are allowed a little access to him, we are not allowed to get documents, information or get him sign documents for change of counsel, we are constrained to say that this is not how it is done elsewhere.

“Where two parties are contesting over a case in the court of law and there is no equality, there is discrimination, somebody has the upper hand and it is being allowed, that kind of prosecution is not done in any other country.”

Ten volunteer trainee cricket coaches were also introduced to the game of cricket for the first time. The training event was supervised by Bibiana Ngwenifun (Leader of Adagom 1 Camp), who ensured that the female folks were equally represented at this training event.

The new cricket players and trainee coaches were taught the basics of cricket by NCF Development Officer, Blessing Etim and Patrick Edididong. On day 1, the training involved the introduction of cricket to the trainees, fitness drills, basic batting, bowling and fielding drills. Day 2, involved a mixture of classroom based training and field training. The areas covered were cricket seminar, detailed explanation of cricket laws, as well as the demonstration of batting and bowling techniques. On the last day of the training event, a practice game between residents of Adagom 1 and Adagom 3 was held.

Attendees at this groundbreaking training event were drawn from the three camps that are based in Ogoja Local Government Area, namely: Adagom 1, Adagom 3 and Ukende. At the end of the training event, cricket starter packs for training and match purposes that were donated by Lord’s Taverners and the NCF were freely distributed to the Sports Committee Leaders of Adagom 1 and Adagom 3 Camps.

Representatives of Ukende Camp were advised that the event organisers will hold a separate training event for them within the next six weeks, after they would have taken delivery of sets of cricket packs.

The Chairman of Cross River Cricket Association, Dr Macfarlane Ejah stated that their Association will build on the success of this training event to develop grassroots cricket in the Ogoja and Northern axis of the State.

Going forward, based on the NCF experience of using cricket to support IDPs in Uhogua Camp in Edo State, the current leadership of the NCF is expected to support their new cricket coverts by using cricket to provide them with psycho-social support, empower them in terms of using the game of cricket to learn soft skills like computing/coding, as well as promoting tolerance and respect for each other. More importantly, living in peace and harmony with the other residents of Ogoja community, is also a priority.

On their part, the Trustees of CSED Initiative, are currently exploring the possibility of introducing other sports (netball, table tennis, pickleball, and taekwondo) to residents of the three Cameroonian camps. CSED Initiative also hope to take on the challenge of building a multi-purpose playing court at Ukende Camp.

Subject to overcoming the issue of high cost of generating alternative source of electricity, as well as procuring 20 to 25 computers, CSED Initiative hopes to introduce the “Sporting Coders” programme to some selected residents of the three camps.

Ako Allan (a Cameroonian refugee) and his team, are already on ground waiting to take the benefit of the “Sporting Coders” programme to the next level. This is after the “Sporting Coders” programme was successfully piloted in Bayelsa State, by members of the netball team of Tare Pet Montessori Group of Schools. CSED Initiative will soon commence discussion with the NCF on how their grassroots players can also benefit from taking part in the “Sporting Coders” training programme in future.

  • Muslim Families Prepare For Modest Salah

As the  holy month of Ramadan comes to an end,  Muslim faithfuls are looking forward to the Eid El Fitr festival with modest excitement.

Families are making preparations for the Salah in different ways in view of the current economic hardship.

Mohammed  Shehu, a resident of Gwarinpa in Abuja, said: “By God’s grace the little we get we’ll celebrate with it. When we get money, we’ll buy some clothes for the children.

    Shehu, Abuja resident

“Why we buy new clothes for kids is to make them happy when they go out to celebrate and mingle with other kids during the celebrations. They may end up crying if they don’t get new clothes to wear, especially if they see fellow kids wearing new clothes without them wearing any.

“But in my own case I won’t cry if I don’t wear any new clothes. I don’t need new clothes to celebrate Salah because I’m already an adult. As adult, I wear what I get.”

Shehu, who has one wife and nine children, said he would buy clothes for all his children and wife. He said the family will celebrate the salah by cooking different delicacies.

“We will make meat pie, chin chin, fried chicken, make some juice, cook rice and stew, do salad, masa and taushe soup.

“We will cook vegetable soup and other delicacies, go out, visit friends and families, catch fun, go to the zoo and show the kids some animals they are not familiar with, and the following day we go to Keffi and watch Durbar,” he revealed.

Mr Umar Umar, another Abuja resident,  is having difficulty planning big for the Salah due to the “challenging economic hardship,” but his children would definitely wear new clothes.

    Umar Umar Abuja resident

“My children will wear their new clothes if the tailor is able to finish the sewing. We will cook rice, paste and soup with meat as usual and if possible we would invite people and go out to visit relatives and friends with the children, if we don’t have the means to do that we would just eat and stay at home,” he said.

In Maiduguri, Munira Salisu (PhD), a housewife, told THE WHISTLER that her children would also wear new clothes for the Salah.

” As for me, I gave tailor my kids’ clothes since two months ago so that there won’t be any disappointment, “ she said, adding that she got a new chef who will prepare different snacks for the family and for their visitors.

Dr Salisu said her chef would also make her husband’s favourite meal which is masa and jollof rice.

After the home cooking, “I plan to wear my new clothes too and will take the kids to a popular park in the heart of Maiduguri, and later visit my sister at Unimaid quarters.”

Hajiya Hadiza Yusuf, a housewife based in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, said she was not sure of making big preparations due to the hot weather.

    Hadiza Yusuf

Yusuf said: “Personally, due to the heat, I am afraid to go out. So, tomorrow(Tuesday) I’ll go out in the morning to start the preparation.

Her preparations include taking her children’s new clothes ready, buying food items and soup ingredients, and taking her daughters to the salon and doing the traditional Laile decorations for them.

On Salah day, she would make peppered meat, rice, zobo drink and pepper soup, and visit her father. She planned to make her father’s delicacy too.

“He likes his guest to eat pounded yam with egusi soup,” she said, with smiles.

Maimunat, Nna a single lady, complained about the economic situation of the country but said she looked forward to “celebrating love and togetherness.”

    Maimunat Mohammed Nna

She added that “The price of food alone is worrisome, people don’t even talk about the usual Sallah clothes and stuff. Most families just want to see their loved ones and share the little they have.” she said.

However, the harsh economic conditions would not stop her from taking her mother for salah shopping and preparing “different meals for families who would be visiting us.”

She planned to make local delicacies such as “Eje Shekafa with Beans Soup”and “Emagi Soup.”
