  • Exempt Borno State From ‘Anti-People’ Increment In Electricity Tariff – CSOs To NERC

    NERC

A network of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Borno State has asked the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to exempt Borno State from the payment of the 230 per cent Increment on electricity tariff.

According to the network of the CSOs, the exemption is necessary, considering the state’s status of recovering from the rubbles of Boko Haram insurgency.

The Executive Director of the network of CSOs in the state, Bulama Abiso, said: “It came to us as a great shock, the recent announcement by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on the increase in electricity tariff without putting into account the current predicaments faced by the people of Borno State.”

He further said, “We are appealing to the Federal Government, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Generation Companies, Transmission Companies of Nigeria, the Borno State Government and all other relevant stakeholders to support the reversal of this anti-people policy, considering the current recovery status of the state.”

The CSOs expressed dismay over what they described as the distribution of February and March electricity bills to households without provision of electricity by the Yola Electricity Distribution Company.

“This concern is affecting every household on the estimated billing system occasioned by abrupt disruption of free installation of the metering systems that ought to have been distributed but are now alleged to be sold at exorbitant prices.

“Consequently, we are requesting that YEDC resumes the free distribution and installation of the metering system to every household in Borno state,” Abiso said.

The CSOs called on the YEDC to enhance its distribution capacity to sufficiently meet the demands of the Maiduguri metropolis.

  • No force in the world can stop Israel’s military invasion of Rafah

No force in the world can stop Israel

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the IDF would advance into Rafah, and that “no force in the world” can stop the looming invasion of the Gazan city which currently houses about 1.4 million displaced Palestinians.

Netanyahu’s comments came while addressing new IDF recruits where he claimed that Israel will eradicate Hamas.

The Israeli prime minister’s comments come despite mounting pressure from the United States and European leaders to not invade Rafah in the absence of an adequate civilian evacuation plan.

“We will complete the elimination of the Hamas battalions, including in Rafah,” Netanyahu said.

Israel says that Rafah is the operating site of four of the remaining six battalions of Hamas that are aided by the presence of other Palestinian militant groups.

No force in the world can stop Israel

“There is no force in the world that will stop us,” he added. “Many forces are trying to do this, but it will not help, because this enemy, after what it has done, will not do it again. It will cease to exist.”

The Israeli prime minister stated that Israel’s primary goal remains the safe return of all hostages who remain captives of Hamas since the October 7 attack.

It remains unclear how many of the remaining 133 hostages are alive. At least five of them are US citizens.

Netanyahu’s purported warning comes just a day after he claimed that there was a scheduled date for the Rafah incursion.

The US has told Netanyahu that a proper plan must be put in place to evacuate civilians from Rafah before the IDF begins its operation in the city.

A rainstorm has wreaked havoc in the Iyara community, headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, destroying hundreds of houses and rendering over 1000 persons homeless.

The incident occurred on Monday, according to locals, who added that many affected families are now seeking refuge with neighbours, relatives, or friends.

According to Daily Trust, the paramount ruler of Iyara, Oba Jacob Meduteni, expressed sadness over the disaster, noting the significant number of people now homeless due to the storm. He appealed to affluent individuals and organisations to assist the victims during this difficult time.

He described the scale of destruction as substantial, especially given the economic challenges facing the country, making it difficult for the victims to recover on their own.

In a plea for assistance, Adebayo Bamisaiye, a victim of the rainstorm, mentioned that such a severe storm had not occurred in the community for many years.

  • Geometric Power Reaches Full Capacity After Synchronization

Geometric Power Limited in Aba, Abia State, has achieved a significant milestone. Between April 3rd and 7th, 2024, it successfully synchronized the three gas turbines with the national grid. This process allows the company to operate at full capacity, significantly improving electricity supply for customers within the Aba ring-fence.

An official from Geometric Power, Amara, explained the importance of synchronization. “Synchronization is crucial,” she said. “It allows our plant to utilize the turbines’ full capacity, which wouldn’t be possible without alignment with the national grid.”

Amara further explained the technical aspect: “Synchronization ensures the generator operates at the correct frequency before connecting to the grid. This process, also called paralleling, integrates the gas turbine with the bulk electricity system.”

Geometric Power acknowledges that the synchronization process may have caused temporary service disruptions between April 3rd and 7th. They apologize for any inconvenience and assure customers of a swift return to stable power supply.

The 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant was inaugurated in February 2024 by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Aba Power Limited Electric (APLE) is set to distribute power from the plant to nine Abia State Local Government Areas: Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma, Ukwa West, Isialangwa North, Isialangwa South, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, and Ukwa East.

  • Super Falcons Hold South Africa In Goalless Draw To Qualify For Paris 2024 Olympic Games

    Super Falcons

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have qualified for the football event of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France after playing a 0-0 draw with South Africa in Pretoria on Tuesday evening.

Randy Waldrum-led side booked their place in the competition after winning 1-0 in the first leg in Abuja on Friday.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was called upon to save from a deep-flying corner as early as the third minute. Nigeria was on the front foot immediately after, with Chinwendu Ihezuo seeing her headed ball caught by Kaylin Swart after a cross by captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

Ihezuo failed to connect with a header to Osinachi Ohale’s dipping free-kick in the 27th minute, but then Nigeria breathed better when Thembi Kgatlana made a hash of an opportunity as the Banyana broke forward.

In the second half, Linda Motlhalo, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Nomvula Kgoale proved a handful for The Pride of Africa, as they seized the midfield and got a couple of good passes to their danger-lady, Kgatlana. But at all times, Ohale, Chidinma Okeke, Christy Ucheibe and goalkeeper Nnadozie were alert and unruffled.

Nnadozie, who plays for Paris FC in France, further enhanced her reputation and market value with great saves in the 70th and 86th minutes. In-between, Ihezuo’s flicked header to an Ajibade in-swinger went narrowly away.

The one-goal win on aggregate means the Falcons will participate in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament for the first time since 2008, and will join Brazil, Spain and Japan in a potentially-explosive Group C in July.

“We did it! We did it! We are finally going to play in the Olympics,” Ajibade said excitedly at the final whistle.
