  • Two Plunge Into Lagoon, 18 Passengers Escape Death In Lone Accident On Third Mainland Bridge

Less than one week after the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State was opened to traffic, two passengers onboard a 20-seater bus plunged into a lagoon, while 18 others escaped death when a commercial bus had a lone accident on the bridge on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the bus was at high speed before the driver lost control as a result of brake failure. The bus almost fell into the lagoon, but was stopped by the rail of the bridge.

The 18 passengers who sustained serious injuries were rescued by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, who confirmed the accident said that the marine rescue team are already in lagoon on search and rescue mission for the other two.

“Meanwhile, the Marine rescue team already inside lagoon on search and rescue mission to see if any of those passengers fell inside the lagoon.

“Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services and other emergency stakeholders (are) on ground at the accident scene,” Adebayo said in a statement.

Also, confirming the incident, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the two victims that fell into the lagoon are a man and a woman.

“A tragic accident involving a 20-seater bus with registration number FKJ 872 YA happened near the Adeniyi Adele area, heading towards Lagos Island. The bus was traveling at a high speed when it veered off the road, striking the bridge rails and causing two passengers to be ejected into the lagoon. The victims, a man and a woman, are currently being searched for by the Marine Police,” the agency said in a statement.

The bus has since been evacuated off the road for free vehicular movement inward Adeniji Adele area of Lagos Island. The driver was said to have run away after the accident.

The reopening of the bridge to traffic on April 4, came weeks after extensive repairs.

Earler last week, LASTMA had warned motorists to maintain speed limits while driving on the bridge.

The General Manager of the agency, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, had said that not observing the speed limit may result in untoward consequences for motorists.

The mother of two who spoke in a post on her Instagram page said that her silence cannot be misunderstood.

Mabel’s post reads thus in full; ‘‘I want to express my sincere gratitude for the supportive messages that I have received from everyone.

’’However, my silence should not be misunderstood and also, the father of my children, whom I have been with for some years, deserves a certain level respect and privacy from me and all the concerned parties. Most importantly, because of our children, whose mental health and general well-being should be prioritized.

’’Many lies have been peddled against me and attacks orchestrated on the social media space but I will honour my kids with my silence and not address any of these lies.

’’Although my dreams of a lifelong marriage has taken a different direction now, I’m committed to moving forward with grace and resilience. I have faith in a brighter future for both myself and the children. Despite the rumors or opinions, I find comfort in the belief that all will be well.

’’While it’s unexpected for things to end this way, I quietly ask for guidance from my faith as I step into this new chapter of life. Also, as we navigate this change,I ask for your help in creating an atmosphere of respect and understanding. This is a challenging period, and I ask for privacy and consideration as we (my ex-husband and I) find our own path forward.’’

  • Why We Excluded Retained Earnings From Banks Capitalisation Requirement- CBN

The Director of the Financial Policy and Regulatory Department (FPRD) at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Haruna B. Mustafa has said that the reason for the exclusion of retained earnings is for banks to inject fresh capital into the system.

Mustafa said this in a podcast titled ‘Banking Sector Recapitalisation Programme 2024′ obtained by THE WHISTLER.

On March 28, 2024, the CBN raised capital requirements for banks operating in the country to N500bn for international, N200bn for national, and regional banks to maintain a minimum share capital of N50bn.

The exercise which took effect on April 1, 2024, is believed to strengthen the resilience of the banking sector and set the path for the proposed $1tn economy.

However, the bank said other reserves and Additional Tier 1 (AT1 Capital shall not be allowed or recognized for the purpose of meeting the new minimum capital requirements.

This condition was largely criticised by industry experts.

Mustafa said, “Section 9 and Section 63 (2a)of the Bank’s and Other Financial Institutions Act, 2020 empower the Central Bank to determine the capital of banks and also the timeline within which banks should comply with those requirements. It also enables the CBN to set the level and quality of capital that all the banks will have. And this is without prejudice to what should constitute the shareholder’s funds.

“What the central bank has simply done is to ensure that banks inject fresh equity, fresh capital. Don’t forget, banks are in the business of financial intermediation, and this comes with risks. The capital is there to absorb some of these, these risks or losses that may arise from their operations.”

He explained further that Nigeria’s banking system is safe, sound, and resilient adding that the regulator is only trying to enhance and further strengthen the banking system.

Mustafa added, “What we have simply done is to nudge the banks to inject fresh capital. This is without prejudice, like I mentioned, to what the different components of shareholder’s funds will be, and like we have stated in our circular.

“Shareholders’ funds with other reserves will continue to be recognized in the computation and determination of banks’ capital adequacy ratio, which is an important metric.

“In our assessment of the soundness of banks. So, it doesn’t detract from what the capital adequacy ratio of banks should be, and we are not changing the definition of capital.”

  • We Regret Voting Tinubu In 2023, Won’t Repeat Such Mistake – Northern Elders

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed its regrets that the region voted for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections.

Of the three leading candidates in the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu, who ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), polled the highest votes from the region.

In an interview with Guardian on Tuesday, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, spokesman of the forum, said going forward, the region would prioritise unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land.

When asked about the recent visit and donations by Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, to communities in northern states, Suleiman said the region would prioritise someone who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.

“The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future.”

“They have learned from their past misstep and will strive to select a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.

“Moving forward, the North will be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency. They will prioritise someone who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.

“The mistake of supporting Tinubu in 2023 has taught them the importance of unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land,” he was quoted as saying.

Tinubu has been widely criticised over some policies of his administration, which have been tagged as anti-masses.

Earlier in the week, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu’s main challenger in last year’s election, said the president’s policies lack human face.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate said this in reaction to the hike in electricity tarriff.

However, the president has consistently assured Nigerians that the worse days are over, saying his government has things under control.

After signing  the Student Loan bill into law last week, Tinubu said the future of Nigerian children will be brighter as the path to take them out of poverty has been cleared.

He also said the economy was taking shape and step were being taken to tackle inflation.

  • From Saudi Arabia, Zulum promises to address Borno’s water scarcity in 48 hours

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed his administration’s commitment to convert all boreholes within Maiduguri, the state capital, and its environs to solar-powered ones to guarantee steady water supply.

Zulum made this known in a broadcast to residents about the problem of water scarcity in the city caused by a lack of steady electricity supply.

Recall that the power supply to Maiduguri from the national grid has been affected since January when insurgents destroyed some of the transmission towers.

Also, the new 50-megawatt gas power plant constructed by the Federal Government in Maiduguri has been off and on due to technical and software problems.

The governor, in a video from Saudi Arabia, where he was observing the lesser Hajj (Umrah), said alternative measures were also being taken to address the water problem within 48 hours.

He decried the corruption associated with some of those handling government boreholes within the city, who were being supplied fuel for six hours daily but ended up pumping water for only one hour daily.

Zulum said: “We are going to set up committees for the boreholes in each ward, involving residents to monitor and address the problem.

“Residents need to sit up and assist the government in ensuring service delivery.”

The governor encouraged citizens to use the period of Ramadan to pray for peace and prosperity and for divine intervention in exposing saboteurs of government programmes and policies.

He affirmed the recent arrest of some people linked to cases of fire outbreaks in displaced persons camps.
