Thousands protest in Niger Republic for US troops to leave the country immediately

On Saturday, April 13, thousands gathered in Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic, demanding the prompt exit of US troops from the country.

This demonstration ensued after the military junta in Niamey announced its withdrawal from a military pact with Washington.

Since a coup in July, Niger had asserted in mid-March that a 2012 cooperation agreement had been unilaterally imposed by the United States. Among the demonstrators in front of the National Assembly Headquarters in Niamey were students and notable figures from the military regime. The chants of the crowd echoed with slogans denouncing “American imperialism” and heralding “the people’s liberation.”

While French troops had been expelled by the end of 2023, approximately 1,000 American soldiers remained stationed in Agadez city in the northern region. In late March, Niger revealed that the US would present a plan to withdraw its troops from the country. Though Washington declined to comment officially, it acknowledged contacting Niger for clarification.

“Sheikh Ahmadou Mamoudou, a respected religious leader, vocally urged for the swift and peaceful departure of the Americans, as they had promised,” exclaimed, “They said they would leave, so let them depart swiftly and tranquilly.”

As flags from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Russia were visible, the organizers of the protest , however, advised demonstrators against using slogans that insulted the US or burning its flags.

  • BREAKING: Nigerian Air Force Corporal Detained Over TikTok Posts Hospitalised, Family Members Denied Access To Airman

Garba before his arrest was well-known on TikTok for comparing the best practices of military personnel in the United States with the situation in Africa.

CPL A.I. Garba, an airman with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) detained over his TikTok videos, has been hospitalised because of a yet-to-be-known ailment, SaharaReporters has gathered.

Garba before his arrest was well-known on TikTok for comparing the best practices of military personnel in the United States with the situation in Africa.

SaharaReporters had reported how he was detained over some of the videos which the military believed were targeted at exposing some irregularities within the institution.

Confirming his arrest, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet had said the soldier was in custody for violating some provisions of the Armed Forces Act.

“Let me, however, state that the NAF and indeed the military as a whole are guided by set rules and regulations,” he told SaharaReporters.

“Any personnel who violates these rules and regulations or falls short of its expectations knows the consequences. Indiscipline in whatever form will not be tolerated.”

Speaking to SaharaReporters during the weekend, a military source said the soldier had been moved from an underground cell where he was kept to the military hospital inside Abacha Barracks in Abuja.

One of his family members who spoke to the newspaper, however, said they were denied access to him.

“We were not granted access to him but we are aware that he is medically unfit to be in detention because of his health record. As I’m talking to you, his first daughter is very sick as well,” he said.

  • Matawalle lashes NEF over Tinubu comment, says group a political burden to northerners

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has lambasted apex northern socio-political group, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), following their statement that they regretted voting for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election .

The former Zamfara State governor who took a swipe at the group of elders in a statement on Saturday, said the Forum was living in delusion and had refused to accept reality while constituting a burden to northerners in the process.

The Forum had, in a statement last week, said it was considering withdrawing their support for Tinubu in 2027 due to the escalating insecurity in the north and other challenges facing the country.

But while reacting to the threat, Matawalle said the elders were only naive and blinded not to see the efforts of Tinubu in resolving Nigeria’s problems including insecurity.

He accused the NEF of seeking political relevance to overburden the system and create political disunity among citizens.

The Minister further described the Forum as “more or less a political paperweight trying to embark on a destructive journey that will bring the North to disrepute for their personal and selfish gains.”

“This NEF is more of a political burden to northerners. The group is seeking to erode other people’s rights to be recognised or made relevant in the scheme of things despite the failure of their sponsored candidates in the 2023 general elections,” he said.

“In as much as many have overlooked them in respect of their utterances, it is pertinent to underscore their overbearing attitude on issues that affect political unity and cohesion.

“They cannot offer any positive idea or thought about the future of northern Nigeria or, indeed, of Nigeria and its unity and togetherness.

“President Tinubu is poised to do a lot for the North as president of Nigeria, elected by the people of Nigeria, not by one ethnic group or the other, therefore, anyone mistakenly seeing President Tinubu as a failure or a weakling is making a mistake and should rethink.

“Such a person or group is either blind or misguided and unable to see the new Nigeria that is emerging.

“Therefore, the NEF’s statement allegedly expressing regret for voting for President Tinubu is unfortunate. NEF is not more than a group that has refused to accept reality and is living in delusion,” he added.

  • Nigeria’s Crude Oil Grades Sell Above $93 Per Barrel As Middle East Crisis Worsens

Nigeria is expected to generate more revenue from crude oil as geopolitical tension between Russia and Ukraine, and Israel/Hamas have elevated the prices of its crude oil grades above $93 per barrel, an amount higher than its 2024 budget benchmark price.

The new price rise happened as Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched “dozens of drones and missiles” at Israel in retaliation for an attack on its consulate in Syria on 1 April which killed seven military officers, including a top commander.

The attack has heightened the tension in the Middle East which has been in crisis since Hamas attacked Israel last year while Europe is battling with the Russia/Ukraine War.

Checks on crude oil prices show that the three major grades Brass River, Qua Iboe and Bonny Light were all trading above Brent Crude and the West Texas Intermediate.

Brass River sells for $93.89, Qua Iboe, $93.89 while Bonny Light is priced at $93.54 per barrel.

Benchmark crude, Brent Crude gained 0.71 per cent to sell at $90.45 per barrel while WTI Crude gained 0.64 per cent to trade $85.66 per barrel.

The prices for Nigerian crude oil grades are trading around $15.9 per barrel above the crude oil price benchmark of $77.96 bpd set in the 2024 budget by the government.

The development comes amidst the improvement in crude production for Africa’s most populous economy. According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, crude oil production is around 1.45 million barrels per day.

The country is expected to meet its 1.7 million bpd production benchmark for the 2024 budget of N27.5tn as crude oil theft and vandalism are being tamed by the NNPCL and its security partners.

  • Israel Intercepts Iran’s Attack With U.S. Support, Says Minor Damage Caused

Iran launched several waves of attacks against Israel overnight, apparently targeting multiple military locations across the country.

The attack triggered anti-aircraft defenses in Israel, as well as prompted its allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom to scramble jets from their bases in the Middle East in an effort to shoot down the projectiles before they reach their targets, RT reports.

The strikes come in retaliation to an airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria which occurred early this month and was attributed by Tehran to Israel.

The attack left the diplomatic facility completely destroyed and killed seven officers of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, including two high-ranking generals in violation of international laws.

The consulate strike, which Israel has kept silent about like it usually does with its practice of extraterritorial attacks, has been explicitly named as the pretext for the strikes by the IRGC.

The strikes come in retaliation to “the Zionist regime’s numerous crimes, including the attack on the consular section of Iran’s Embassy in Damascus,” the force stated.

Iran has been ambiguous on the scale of the attack with the IRGC stating it has launched “tens of missiles and drones against certain targets inside the occupied territories,” describing the strikes as “extensive.”

According to the estimates by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Tehran fired a barrage of more than 200 missiles and kamikaze drones at the country.

However, the majority of the incoming projectiles ended up being shot down before even reaching Israeli airspace, the IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari has claimed.

“Only a fraction of the projectiles made it through, inflicting minor damage in the country’s territory,” he said.

Washington has provided a similar assessment of the damage, with President Joe Biden stating that the US has “helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles”.

Numerous unverified videos circulating online, however, purport to show several projectiles making it through Israeli anti-aircraft defences, scoring hits at targets on the ground.

Meanwhile, closest allies of Israel, including the US, the UK, Germany, Francis and some other Western nations, were quick to condemn the strikes, even though none of the nations condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian consulate.

Biden has convened an emergency G7 meeting to assess the situation and “coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack.”

Israel and Iran have also traded accusations at the United Nations, with the latter insisting it has been exercising its right to self-defence in the wake of the consulate attack, while the former accused Tehran of breaching the UN Charter.

Israel has requested an extraordinary UN Security Council meeting, urging the body to designate the IRGC as a terrorist group.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the Iranian attack as a “serious escalation” and urged an end to the hostilities immediately. “Neither the region nor the world can afford another war,” he stated.

Iran, however, has signalled the massive strike was a one-time retaliatory action for the Israeli actions, rather than a beginning of a broader military campaign. Any attempts to retaliate for it, however, will be met with a greater response, the Iranian mission to the UN has said, explicitly warning the US against intervening.

“Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus. The matter can be deemed concluded,” the mission stated, adding that “should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe.”

A similar warning has been issued by the Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, who said any country “that could open its soil or airspace to Israel for a [potential] attack on Iran, will receive our decisive response.”

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was “prepared for any scenario, both in defense and offense,” without, however, explicitly promising to take a direct military action against Iran.

Since the beginning of the escalation, the IDF has only attacked several locations in southern Lebanon, said to have been used by the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah.

  • Despite tarrif hike, 85% of Nigerians still enjoy electricity subsidy —Govt

The Federal Government says despite the recent increase in electricity tariffs, around 85 per cent of Nigerians still enjoy electricity subsidy across the country.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who made this known when he spoke as a guest in an Hausa programme of Radio Nigeria Kaduna, “Hannu Da Yawa” on Saturday, noted that the tarrif increase was necessary as the government will save over N1tn from the fresh tariff hike.

Idris who also reacted to complaints from many callers into the programme over the increment in electricity tariff recently announced for Band A customers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, noted that he had on record that 85 per cent of the Nigerian population who fall under different categorisations outside the Band A regime still enjoy the subsidy

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media), Rabiu Ibrahim after the programme, Idris said with the disproportionate amount of electricity subsidy, approximately 40 per cent of Nigerians were benefiting from it while about 15 per cent of the electricity consumer population comprising affluent individuals and industrial clusters, enjoy about 20 hours of electricity.

“Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that the over N1tn that would be saved from the withdrawal of electricity subsidy will be reinvested in improving power supply and the provision of social services for the country,” part of the statement reads.

“Idris emphasised that 85 per cent of the population who fall under the different categorisations of the new electricity supply regime still enjoy the subsidy.

“The minister further stated that the new Electricity Act, signed by President Tinubu, had strengthened the governance structure of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and empowered the agency to place severe sanctions on electricity distribution companies for infractions relating to billings and supply of electricity to consumers,” it said.

  • ‘First Blood’ – Israel Mulls Response In Talks With US President Following Iranian Attacks

Israel is considering responding to the Iranian attacks of Saturday in an unprecedented development in the Middle East crisis.

The attacks of Saturday night marked a departure from years of proxy wars between the two sworn enemies.

Iran had had to exercise strategic patience over its crisis with Israel since its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came to power in 1989.

Ali Khamenei’s ascension into power in the wake of the brutal Iran-Iraq war has seen Iran adopt a “strategic patience” in its hostility towards Israel, on what it calls the ‘Zionist regime’.

There has never been direct confrontation between the pair despite frequent shadow wars. Israel regards Iran as the world’s greatest sponsor of terrorism and the US regards Tehran as a destabilising force in the region.

But with first blood drawn following the drones and launch of ballistic missiles on Israel, it marked the first time the two countries would go head to head following Iranian accusation that Israel was responsible for the 1st April attacks on its embassy in Syria that killed scores of its military officials including a commander.

Spokesman of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari in a televised statement, said Iran launched a “massive swarm” of more than 200 killer drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles to overwhelm Israel’s Iron Dome defence.

He however pointed out that Israel’s defence systems intercepted the “vast majority” of the missiles and drones, dozens of which he says were shot down outside of Israeli territory.

An injury was recorded. Israel’s ambulance service said paramedics were treating a seven-year-old girl who was injured by shrapnel from falling debris in the Bedouin area of the Arab region.

In a telephone conversation with Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, US
President Joe Biden reaffirmed America’s “ironclad” commitment to Israel in the call.

“I told him Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks,” the president said.

He added that Israel has sent “a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel,” by defending itself in such an unprecedented manner.

As the domestic front quietens to a new era in the region, the IDF has said “some restrictions have been lifted” on movement inside Israel.

Following the direct attack which the IDF said some missiles landed in Israel “where minor damage was caused to infrastructure,” there are fears that Israel’s response may be disproportionate and further widen the regional crisis.

Natanyahu had promised in a nationwide address to the nation that “we will harm any enemy that attempts to harm us,” swearing “to do everything possible to defend Israel” declaring “we are strong, the military is strong and the people are strong.”

The World awaits yet another Israeli response similar to Gaza as it mulls what next step to take after the success of its multi-tier air defence array that includes the recently launched C-Dome against the Iranian attacks of Saturday.
