  • Falana rejects capital punishment, calls for focus on root causes

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has weighed in on the debate surrounding capital punishment, calling it an ineffective solution that ignores the root of societal problems.

Falana, a prominent figure in Nigerian law, rejected the notion that capital punishment acts as a deterrent, arguing it fails to address the underlying issues that lead to crime.

The activist spoke on Monday during a virtual programme to mark the 10th anniversary of the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction organised by Women Radio 91.7fm.

On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram terrorists attacked the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno state and abducted about 276 students.

Commenting on adopting capital punishment for kidnappers as recommended by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, Falana said the suggestion is “diversionary”.

“We do not subscribe to any form of capital punishment because it has never addressed the root cause of the problems it is meant to address,” he stated.

The statement comes amidst discussions on how to tackle rising crime rates in Nigeria. Some have advocated for harsher penalties, including the death penalty, particularly for crimes like kidnapping.

Falana, however, offered a different perspective. He suggests that focusing on corruption, a major issue in Nigeria, might be a more productive approach. “While I think it is a diversionary suggestion,” he said, referring to calls for capital punishment for kidnappers, “other Nigerians would prefer that we recommend capital punishment for the criminality that leads to corruption.”

Falana further highlighted the hypocrisy of advocating for harsher punishments for some crimes while ignoring others.

“Those who are making suggestions that kidnappers be shot at would also not want to extend that to those who loot the treasury, sometimes to the tune of over N100 billion,” he pointed out, referencing the vast sums embezzled through corruption.

Alleged $6bn fraud: Court Dismisses Agunloye’s Motion against Prosecution by EFC

Alleged $6bn fraud: Court Dismisses Agunloye’s Motion against Prosecution by EFCC

Justice Jude Onwueguzie of the Federal High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja on Monday, April 15, 2024, dismissed a motion raised by former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye challenging the powers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to prosecute him.

Agunloye is facing trial for an alleged fraudulent award of contract of the Mambilla project to the tune of $6billion (Six Billion United States Dollars)

At the last adjournment, the former minister, through his lawyer, Adeola Adedipe SAN filed a motion arguing that the EFCC lacked both investigative and prosecutorial powers to prosecute him on the charges preferred against him.

He also made a solemn application to the court to allow the participation of Amicus Curiae, also known as friends of the court during the hearing of the preliminary motion, suggesting notably, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

At Monday’s’ sitting, Justice Onwueguzie ruled that the basis for the application was not necessary as the court was not a novice and the friends of the court were not parties in the matter. He also said that the law was clear on matters to be prosecuted by the EFCC, citing Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“I have studied the issues to be considered in this matter by the defendant whether the motion ought to be charged by the EFCC. It is eminent to note that the learned counsels in this case before the court are seasoned counsels, issues of such should not arise.

The court is not a novice, neither is it confused or in doubt on matters like this, so the intervention of friends of the court is not needed. Therefore the motion is hereby dismissed”, he said.

After dismissing the motion, Justice Onwueguzie adjourned the matter to April 22, 2024 for hearing of preliminary motion.

“Furthermore, the last day of the week, April 7th, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria.

“Tonight, I must remind you that we don’t see you as just the shields of the nation, we don’t see you as robots.”

The president, while giving his remarks, noted that the Tinubu-led administration was focused on transforming the force into a modern professional and accountable institution.

“At a time in Nigeria’s history, when the nation’s security architecture is being stretched beyond elastic limits, the citizens have been able to endure in the face of security threats as well as attacks on their lives and livelihoods due to the commitment of the police.

“Your exemplary valour doesn’t only represent the pinnacle of patriotism that binds us but also instils confidence that brighter days lie just beyond the horizon,” he said.

On his part, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, described the maiden award ceremony as one that demonstrates the meritorious, guided principles that should shape everyday personnel actions and decisions.

He said the institution would recognise disciplined officers who diligently execute investigations and prosecutions, and whose meticulous attention to detail and unwavering pursuit of justice in the nation’s criminal justice system is unstaggering.

Egbetokun said, “Their efforts have brought offenders to justice, delivered closure to victims and reinforced the rule of law, transforming justice from a mere concept into tangible reality for all.

“I will also be presented in 16 categories, including Cyber Crime Buster, CP of the Year, community policing, investigator gallantry and integrity, among others.

“As part of this commitment, the force remains vigilant in sanctioning those who have acted unprofessionally or in violation of the code of conduct in the course of their duties.

“The Awards Night serves not only as a platform for celebration but also as a reminder of the importance of accountability and responsibility within law enforcement.”

Woman, 42, among four charged with burglary after gang broke into Footballer Alexander Isak

A woman is among four Croatians charged with burglary after a raid on Newcastle United striker, Alexander Isak’s mansion.

According to Mail Online, a gang broke into the Premier League footballer’s house in Darras Hall, Newcastle, while he was away from home on April 4 and stole a large sum of cash and his luxury sports car.

The vehicle was found abandoned three miles away in the remote village of Dissington, police said.

The group of four are accused of breaking into another home in Sunderland where designer clothes, jewellery, and cash were stolen to the value of more than £100,000.

The suspects are also believed to have broken into a property in Jesmond on March 31 where more clothes and jewellery were taken.

  • Benue internal revenue service targets N16b, prosecutes 35 illegal tax collectors

The acting chairman of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Emmanuel Agena, has said that the service is targeting N16b collection for the 2024 fiscal year.

Agena also disclosed that 35 people who engage in illegal tax collection in the state are facing prosecution.

The BIRS acting boss disclosed this on Monday while speaking with journalists in Makurdi, the state capital, adding that in 2023, the board surpassed its N14bn target.

Agena, while lamenting the activities of illegal tax collectors in the state, noted that most of them have the backing of prominent individuals.

He said that under his watch, the era of patronising politicians has become history.

Speaking further, BIRS boss frowned at the recent incident where a truck conveying palliatives from Adamawa to Anambra State was hijacked by some youths in Aliade, Gwer East.

He said: “A truck was intercepted and the driver beaten while the windscreen of the vehicle broken and over N200,000 was stolen. Three persons have been arrested and are in police custody. They will be moved to DSS for a thorough investigation.

“Our aim is to flush out or reduce illegal tax collectors to the barest minimum. Already, 35 people who engaged in illegal tax collection were arrested and are facing prosecution.

“This has been a big challenge. We have constituted a team headed by a director of tax collection. Prominent people in the state are involved in encouraging these boys.

“We also plan to recover over N5.6bn from ground rent. We are liaising with the Ministry of Land towards this direction.”

He added that the service has engaged the services of an ICT company to aid the collection of revenue.

“They are paid a commission. The company has engaged over 250 staff members who have been trained and given Point of Sales to collect revenue.

“Taxation is about confidence. Our work now is easy. Taxpayers are willing to pay because the people are seeing what the government is doing,” he added.

  • Atiku Backs Arsenal To Win Premier League Title Despite Aston Villa Defeat

    Arsenal Players

Former Nigeria Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar is confident that Arsenal can win the Premier League title despite a dismal 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s team title hopes suffered a major hit after they failed to take advantage of Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace earlier in the day.

Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scored two late second half goals to condemn Arsenal to their first Premier League loss in 2024.

The result handed the top spot to Manchester City, who are two points clear of Arsenal and Liverpool going into the last six games of the season.

Atiku, who is a life-long Arsenal fan is hopeful that the club can put the setback behind them to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

He wrote on X: “Not the result we expected from Arsenal. But we move; it’s not over until it is over.”

Arsenal have a tough run-in in their last six games of the season, starting with a tough trip to the Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday before a home clash with Chelsea on Tuesday.

Mikel Arteta’s men will hope to win all their games which also include clashes against Tottenham, Manchester United and Everton in their last three games of the season.

The Gunners will be back in action on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

  • Trump’s last Republican rival Nikki Haley gets new job after failed 2024 presidential bid

Trump?s last Republican rival Nikki Haley gets new job after failed 2024 presidential bid

Former US presidential candidate, Nikki Haley has announced that she has taken up a new job.

The former South Carolina governor last month, dropped out of the Republican presidential primary after failing to gain enough momentum against rival Donald Trump following Super Tuesday, when the former president swept nearly every contest.

Haley announced on Monday April 15, she will be joining the Hudson Institute, a conservative foreign-policy think tank as their Walter P. Stern Chair.

During her 2024 bid, the former US ambassador to the UN stressed the importance of America’s alliances with Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and said she will be using her position at Hudson to further her foreign-policy objectives by guiding other policymakers.

“When our policymakers fail to call out our enemies or acknowledge the importance of our alliances, the world is less safe. That is why Hudson’s work is so critical,” Haley said in a statement.

“They believe the American people should have the facts and policymakers should have the solutions to support a secure, free, and prosperous future. I look forward to partnering with them to defend the principles that make America the greatest country in the world.”

The Walter P. Stern Chair program started in 2020 to acknowledge the accomplishments of former Hudson Chairman Walter “Wally” Stern, who played a key role in propelling the institute into a well-known foreign-policy organization.

“Nikki is a proven, effective leader on both foreign and domestic policy,” Hudson President and CEO John Walters said in a statement. “In an era of worldwide political upheaval, she has remained a steadfast defender of freedom and an effective advocate for American security and prosperity. We are honored to have her join the Hudson team.”

Sarah May Stern, chair of Hudson’s Board of Trustees, said of Haley’s new post, “It is fitting that Nikki has taken on this title.

“She is a courageous and insightful policymaker and these qualities are vital in making Hudson the powerhouse policy organization it is today, and I am extremely proud that she has joined the Institute.”
