  • Review dress code to encourage northern women participation, Gov Bala urges police

Bauchi State Governor, Sen Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir has advocated for a review of some of the operational guidelines of Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in order to encourage Northern women to join.

The governor wants NPF to particularly look into its code of dressing such that it would encourage active participation of women especially from Northern parts of the country.

A few months ago, the governor advocated for a Police Day like the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in order to celebrate outstanding performances of personnel of the NPF.

Mohammed made the agitation on Tuesday when he fielded questions from Journalists shortly after granting audience to Wife of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) who is the President of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) Dr Elizabeth Egbetokun at Government House, Bauchi.

The governor acknowledged the role of women Police in ensuring peaceful coexistence among different people in the society with divergent opinions and views.

He maintained that the system as it is now, is not encouraging participation of women from the northern states in view of the socio-cultural and religious differences.

He however applauded Elizabeth Egbetokun for introducing initiatives aimed at empowering women in different areas of the society.

Speaking earlier, Wife of the Inspector General of Police, Dr Elizabeth Egbetokun said that she was in the state to intimate the governor on the newly introduced programme, Initiative of Young Women in Agriculture under the Police Agricultural empowerment programme.

She therefore urged women from the state to avail themselves of the opportunity to improve the economic status of their various families by actively participating in the programme.

  • Debt Burden: Kaduna Assembly Goes After El-Rufai, Begins Probe Of Administration

    Governor-of-Kaduna-State-Uba-Sani-and-Nasir-EL-Rufia

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has decided to go after the immediate past governor of the state Mallam Nasir El-Rufai by setting up a probe to investigate his administration.

El-Rufai was governor for eight years from 2015 to 2023.

The house said it decided to set up a fact-finding committee to probe all finances, loans and contract projects awarded under the former administration.

El-Rufai has been in the eye of the storm since his successor, Uba Sani, revealed that he left a huge debt on the state.

Speaking at a town hall meeting, the governor lamented the huge debt inherited from his predecessor, El-Rufai, on May 29, 2023, was affecting his performance.

He said the state was finding it difficult to meet its key obligation including salary payment as his administration inherited $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities from the ex-governor.

“Despite the huge debt burden of 587 million dollars, 85 billion naira, and N115 billion in contractual liabilities sadly inherited from the previous administration, we remain resolute in steering Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development.

“We have conducted a thorough assessment of our situation and are sharpening our focus accordingly,” the governor had said.

El-Rufai has not commented on the revelation, which left the public shocked.

Following the revelation of excessive debt, the state assembly said it became necessary to investigate the past administration, top associate and Senior Counsellor on Investment, Jimi Lawal.

The panel it announced would probe financial dealings, loans and grants and other project implementation from 2015-2023.

It also mandated the committee to invite for investigation notable leaders including the former speakers of the 8th and 9th Assembly and commissioners of finance.

Also listed for invitation for investigation are the former Managing Directors of Kaduna Markets, and Commissioners of Budget and Planning, among other persons the panel said would unearth, if any case of corruption and embezzlement, had been committed.

  • ‘Yoruba Nation’ Sponsors Promised Us Better Life, Reduction In Costs Of Living — Female Suspect Who Invaded Oyo Government House

Ayanwale Rofiayat, one of the Yoruba Nation agitators suspects, that invaded the Oyo State House of Assembly and Governor’s office has stated that their sponsor promised them that the cost of living would automatically come down.

The Nigeria Police Force, Oyo State Command on Monday paraded 21 suspects in connection with the invasion of the Oyo State government secretariat on Saturday, 13th April.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how the suspects claimed to be members of the Yoruba Nation agitation on Saturday invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi in Ibadan, the state capital.

They were paraded alongside seized exhibits such as guns, ammunition, plaques with the Yoruba nation insignia, cutlasses, walkie-talkies, and other communication gadgets.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Adebola Hamzat while speaking to newsmen on Monday confirmed that the suspects would be charged with treasonable felony and terrorism as investigations intensify to reveal their sponsors, and other suspects are still at large.

However, during the parade, Rofiat explained that the army camouflage attire was given to her and other members when they converged in Ibadan before moving to the Secretariat.

“I’m from Igbo Ora in the Ibarapa zone of the state. The sponsors promised me and my entire family that they would empower us and that our future would be assured. Starvation would no longer be in our lives and that cost of living would automatically come down.

“The Army camouflage attire on me was given to me and other members when we converged in Ibadan before moving to the Secretariat.”

Another suspect, Mr Alabi Ogundeji, who is a 55-year-old lecturer at a Federal College of Education, said the membership of the Yoruba movement is spread across all Yoruba-speaking states.

He said: “Our leaders went to all Yoruba-speaking states to serve officials letters written and we were given our copies.

“Then the proclamation was made and after the declaration, occupation, and notification to the world that Yoruba is an indigenous nation.”

On his part, a 29-year-old phone repairer, Ademola Adeniyi, was defiant saying he didn’t regret his action.

Adeniyi said: “We all know that nothing is working in Nigeria and things are hard for everyone except those in government, we were at the Secretariat waiting for our leader to come and address us.

“We believe our leader knows much about the law and so we are not afraid to join when we were called upon. Our leaders told us that all challenges Yoruba are facing shall be addressed if we achieve our aim.”

Also, a septuagenarian, who was among the suspects, Mr Peter Adeyemo, had denied being a member noting that, he and his daughter went to Itamerin Market to buy some items and on their way back, they saw people gathered and inquired from a policeman, but were later rough-handled and arrested.

On the charms and amulets found on his body, Adeyemo, a furniture carpenter from Iwere Ile in the Ibarapa zone of Oyo State, admitted that he and his daughter were given some insignias including a flag found in possession of the daughter.

  • Ganduje gets more support, as APC denounces purported suspension as ‘fake news’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has vehemently denied the reported suspension of its National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, calling it a “devious act of imposters” and “fake news.”

A statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on April 16th, 2024, addressed media reports claiming the Ganduje Ward Executive Committee in Kano had suspended the chairman.

The APC asserted that these reports were fabricated and the alleged suspension attempt was carried out by “impersonators” affiliated with the rival New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The statement goes on to accuse the Kano State government, led by NNPP’s Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, of orchestrating this act as part of “political persecution” against Ganduje, a former Kano governor.

Morka dismisses the purported suspension as “downright criminal” and “of no effect whatsoever.” He assures the public that the legitimate Ward Committee has denounced the action and maintains Ganduje’s standing as a party member.

The APC has reportedly filed a complaint with the Inspector General of Police, requesting an investigation and legal action against the perpetrators and their alleged sponsors.

The party urges its members and the public to disregard the suspension rumors and reaffirms Ganduje’s position as the National Chairman.

The statement reads, “The purported suspension was the devious act of a group of impersonators of Ward officials out to cause mischief and create confusion in the otherwise peaceful Ganduje Ward chapter of our Party. The perpetrators of this criminal act are not card carrying members of APC in the Ward but are individuals affiliated with senior officials and representatives of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP).

“This act procured by officials of the ruling NNPP in Kano is part of the despicable program of political persecution launched by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf against Dr. Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano state.

“The purported suspension is downright criminal, and of no effect whatsoever. The legitimate Executive Committee of the Ganduje Ward has since denounced the action and reaffirmed Dr. Ganduje as a bonafide member of the Party in the Ward, and in good standing.

“The Party has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police requesting an expedited investigation of this matter and that the perpetrators and their sponsors be brought to justice.”
