  • Repentant Boko Haram women struggle to find love

As the Nigerian government grapples with the reintegration of former Boko Haram insurgents, a new challenge has emerged: the struggle for normalcy faced by repentant women seeking husbands.

Having renounced violence and extremism, these women now find themselves ostracized by communities wary of their past. This stigma, particularly for those who were forced into the insurgency as teenagers, makes finding love and building a new life an uphill battle.

Community leaders report a growing number of repentant women expressing a desire to marry or remarry. Official figures on the number of single women among the over 162,000 surrendered insurgents and their dependents remain unavailable.

However, anecdotal evidence suggests a significant portion face social isolation due to their past affiliation.

“These ladies desperately want to marry or remarry, but men seem scared of them, as no suitors approach them with such proposal,” a ward head at Old Maiduguri, Modu Grema Wakil, complained to PUNCH in Maiduguri, on Monday,

“I have not compiled the number of such ladies, but they send messages to us as community leaders over the matter,” he said.

This fear, however, fails to acknowledge the government’s rehabilitation programs. These programs provide extensive deradicalization training and psychological support. Many women express genuine remorse and a strong desire to contribute positively to society.

Wakil called on the Borno State government to create a database of such repenting female insurgents with a view to persuading suitors to approach them and organising marriages for them.

The situation highlights the complex challenges of post-conflict reintegration. While security concerns are valid, neglecting the social needs of these women could create a breeding ground for future radicalization.

As Nigeria seeks to heal from the insurgency, ensuring a truly rehabilitated society requires not just security measures, but also a path towards social acceptance and a chance at a normal life, including love, for those who have demonstrably renounced violence.

  • Xavi Blames Referee For Barcelona’s Champions League Exit

Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez, has described the referee’s performance in his side’s Champions League 4-1 loss to PSG as a ‘disaster’.

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs showed three red cards to Barcelona in the encounter, Ronald Araujo was sent off for a professional foul. Xavi and a member of his coaching staff was also given the matching order.

Xavi was visibly frustrated after his side crashed out of the Champions League, failing to make it to the last four since they won the competition in 2015.

He said: “The referee was really bad. I told him his performance was a disaster. I don’t like to talk about referees, but it had a clear impact in the season and it has to be said.

“We are very upset and angry because the red card was the decisive factor in the match. With 11, we were in a good position, playing well and in command.

“It’s too much to flash a red card in a game like this. There was another game after that.It is a pity that the work of the season was ruined by an unnecessary expulsion.”

He admitted he would have loved to compete with PSG without numerical disadvantage.

“It is a shame that all the work of a season, because of a refereeing decision, finishes here.

“I would have liked to have played 11 v 11 against Luis Enrique and against PSG [for] all the minutes of the game. We know that there are sendings off in football but I believe that this one [for Araujo] was unnecessary,” he added.

Kylian Mbappe scored a brace to lead PSG to a 4-1 win over 10-man Barcelona in Spain which sealed their place in the Champions League semi-finals.

The visitors earned a 6-4 aggregate win after Barcelona won the first leg 3-2 and Kylian Mbappe finally reminded the world of his quality with a match-winning performance after enduring a frustrating night in the first leg.

Raphinha opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 12th minute before Ronald Araujo was sent off following a professional foul on Barcola just before the half-hour mark.

Dembele quickly restored parity for PSG when he rifled in an unstoppable effort just before halftime.

Vitinha made it two for the visitors nine minutes after the break.

Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez was sent off for failing to control his temper.

Cancelo brought down Dembele in the box just after the hour mark, Mbappe cooly slotted past Stegen to make it 3-1.

Mbappe completed his brace in the 89th minute with a stunning finish to condemn Barcelona to a 4-1 defeat and seal PSG’s place in the semi finals for the first time in three years.

In the other Champions League quarter-final clash between Atletico Madrid and Dortmund, the German side advanced to the last four of the competition with a 4-2 win.

PSG will take on Dortmund in the first leg of the semi-final on April 30 in Germany, while the return leg is billed for May 7 in France.

  • Man Causes Death Of Another Patient After Grandmother Died At Osun Hospital

    ….Osun Teaching Hospital Launches Investigation

The management of Osun State University Teaching Hospital has launched an investigation into the death of a 45-year-old patient under questionable circumstances on Tuesday.

A relative of a patient, identified as Adeyinka, reportedly became distraught after being informed of the death of his 89-year-old grandmother, who had been suffering from a terminal illness.

The old woman died on Monday night in the female ward.

“The relative (Adeyinka) went berserk over the death of the 89-year-old grandmother,” said a hospital source named Jamiu.

“Everybody was trying to calm him down, but he disrupted the female ward. The efforts of the nurses and private security operatives attached to the ward to pacify him proved futile, and the disruption displaced a supplemental oxygen therapy being used for another 45-year-old patient, who died almost immediately.”

After realizing what had happened, Adeyinka reportedly fainted but was revived. The hospital management then detained him and planned to hand him over to the police.

When contacted, the Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital, Prof. Peter Olaitan, confirmed the incident, stating, “There was indeed a lady who died, while a man who lost his old, sick mother started troubling the ward. The lady (who died) was not on life support, and he (the man who caused the disruption) didn’t attack the lady. Investigations are ongoing to unravel what actually happened.”
