Lol! PHCN strikes with total blackout as Arise TV anchor canvassed for Nigerian Universities to build robots (video)

A hilarious incident occurred on Arise TV this morning during the Business segment discussion.

While on the show, the business news anchor, Rotus Odirri who was on live at the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy summit in Abuja, spoke about the event.

Rotus informed his fellow anchors that a Robot was on display at the summit. When his colleague, Rufai asked if a Robot created by some female students in Ijaniki was on display, Rotus responded no and went on to stress that a society gets developed when students can create robots such as the one on display at the summit. Just as he was making his point, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria PHCN, struck the venue of the summit with a blackout, leaving Rotus in total darkness while on National TV.

  • BREAKING: Abuja Magistrate Court Strikes Out Cyberbullying, Criminal Intimidation Case Against Blogger Ijele As Prison Officer Thwarts Police Move To Rearrest Him

A magistrate court in Abuja has struck out the case bordering on criminal intimidation, threat to life, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying filed against social media influencer Ofoegu Chukwuma, popularly known as Ijele.

The Chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna, while ruling on the bail application filed through his lawyer on Thursday struck out the case for lack of jurisdiction.

The judge also ordered the police to arraign the blogger before a competent court of law to enable the defendant take his plea in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice (ACJA) 2015.

Ijele’s application last week suffered a setback as a result of the absence of the Chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Iyanna, who claimed to be sick.

Delivering his ruling on the bail application, Iyana ruled that the defendant be arraigned before the Federal High Court where the prosecution claimed to have filed charges against him.

He added that there was no charge before his court against the blogger and that his court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case.

“There is no current case pending before this honourable court; I hereby strike out this matter,” the chief magistrate held.

Addressing journalists after the court proceedings, Ijele’s lawyer, Marvins Omorogbe, said, “The court had adjourned to today ruling on our bail. The ruling was delivered but the court felt the proper place to continue proceedings is at the Federal High Court. So he rather struck out the matter and striking out the matter means all the orders that were obtained in the case seized to exist.

“Because as it is today, there is no case at the magistrate court and we will be taking steps now to ensure that Ijele is released immediately and unconditionally.

“If there is other reason why the prosecutor needs to prosecute him, we will wait for them at the Federal High Court. As it is today, there is no justification to remand Ijele.”

Meanwhile armed policemen – in uniform and mufti – laid siege to the court premises with the aim. It was suspected that they were on standby to rearrest Ijele shortly after the ruling.

The prison officers had not brought the blogger to the court when the magistrate was giving his ruling in the case. But as at the time Ijele was brought to the court, the proceedings had ended.

Meanwhile, a mild drama played out outside the courtroom when a police officer in mufti approached the prison officer who brought Ijele to sign a warrant of arrest to enable them to rearrest the blogger.

But the prison officer turned down the request as he refused to sign the document, telling the police officer that he could not sign such a document in court.

A source who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity said the nominal complainant, Evangelist Ebuka Obi’s Zion Prayer Ministry Movement Outreach has openly bragged that the blogger will spend close to one year in prison to teach him the lesson of his life.

Ijele has been kept in the Keffi Correctional Centre in Nasarawa State since March 20, 2024 for alleged criminal intimidation, threat to life, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying against Evangelist Ebuka Obi’s Zion Prayer Ministry Movement Outreach.

  • UNICEF says 20,000 children have no access to immunization in Bayelsa

57% Nigerian children without birth certificate —UNICEF

About 20,000 children in Bayelsa State have not had access to immunisation due to the terrain and riverine nature of the state, the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has said.

Media Aide to Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Mr Doubara Atasi, in a statement on Thursday, said that UNICEF also donated six brand new water ambulances boats to boost immunization coverage and primary care delivery services in riverine communities of the state.

Speaking during the donation ceremony in Yenagoa on Thursday, the UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Cristian Munduate, applauded the state government for prioritizing healthcare delivery services, especially in the primary healthcare sector.

Munduate noted that the six water ambulances donated by UNICEF and its partners were meant to close up existing gaps in the health sector, as Bayelsa still had about 20,000 children yet to be reached for immunization.

She, however, pointed out that from the statistics available, Bayelsa achieved a 20 per cent increase in routine immunization in the last couple of years, stressing there was still room for improvement to achieve 100 percent coverage.

Receiving the water ambulance boats, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, appealed to UNICEF to establish a field office in the state to coordinate its programmes and strengthen partnership with the government to better deliver on its mandate.

Diri, who was represented at the ceremony by his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said the creation of a UNICEF field office in the state would make for better coordination and implementation of the organization’s policies and programmes.

He decried the arrangement whereby the UN agency’s programmes were coordinated in the state through the Rivers State UNICEF field office, expressing gratitude to the organisation, and the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) for their partnership with government to improve primary healthcare indices and indicators.

He said: “Bayelsa is 70 per cent riverine. So for us to make effective supervision, for effective healthcare delivery to the people, boats were required, and today you have delivered six water ambulances.

“So, we are very grateful to UNICEF for the six water ambulances to boost our healthcare delivery system. We also want to thank you for renovating six health centres in our state. It will be unfair if we do not acknowledge that kind gesture of yours.

“But there is an appeal I want to make here. We have been having issues with the UNICEF Rivers State field office, so we don’t mind, even if it is just one cubicle you create for us as UNICEF Bayelsa State office. We will be very happy if you can do that for us.”

  • Enugu Residents Sue Police Officers for Alleged Human Rights Violations

    Enugu

Four residents of Umugwuakum Akwuke community in Enugu South Local Government Area have filed lawsuits against senior police officers, accusing them of human rights abuses.

Ifeanyi Ngene, Charles Ugwu, Prince Reginald Nwoye, and Sunday Egbo filed separate suits at the Federal High Court, Enugu Division, on April 17th, 2024. The suits (case numbers FHC/EN/C8/59/24, FHC/EN/C8/60/24, FHC/EN/C8/61/24, and FHC/EN/C8/62/24) name the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu; CSP Chidiebere Ijioma from the IGP’s Special Unit (Octopus); and SP Chidolue Ekeleme, officer-in-charge of the Anti-cult Unit, as defendants.

The plaintiffs allege that the officers violated their fundamental rights during an arrest related to a land dispute between their community and the Etiti-Ngwo community in Udi LGA. Each plaintiff is seeking N200 million in damages from the defendants.

In a statement by the prosecuting counsel, Ifeanyichukwu Obasi-Nweze, the plaintiffs claim the officers violated their rights to life, dignity, personal liberty, fair hearing, peaceful assembly, and association. They argue these rights are guaranteed by the sections 33, 34, 35, 36 (4), 40, and 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended), and Article 5 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act CAP A9 LFN 2004.

Among the reliefs sought, the plaintiffs want a court declaration that the officers’ actions were illegal and violated their rights.

Additionally, they seek an order for their unconditional release from detention, and a restraining order to prevent further harassment, intimidation, or arrest related to the land dispute.

Furthermore, they demand a public apology from the Commissioner of Police published in a national newspaper.

A supporting affidavit deposed by Nnaemeka Nwoye states that the Akwuke community had petitioned the Inspector General of Police regarding unidentified gunmen harassing their community and aiding those demolishing houses. The affidavit claims that following the petition, police arrested five individuals and recovered four guns linked to the Etiti-Ngwo community.

The affidavit further alleges that the plaintiffs and others were beaten by individuals in military uniforms (later identified as military personnel) and then handed over to the MTD Police Station in Awkunanaw. They claim to have been transferred to CSP Chidiebere Ijioma, who is accused of favouring the Etiti-Ngwo people and engaging in detention and torture against the plaintiffs on their behalf.

The affidavit suggests that police officers are colluding with members of the neighboring community to intimidate and harass Umugwuakum Akwuke residents in an attempt to claim additional land, despite a Court of Appeal judgment resolving the dispute in part.

  • Absence of witnesses stalls trial of Lagos pastor who allegedly raped and impregnated his 17-year-old daughter

Absence of witnesses stalls trial of Lagos pastor who allegedly raped and impregnated his 17-year-old daughter

The trial of a Pastor Emmanuel Orekoya at the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for defiling his 17-year-old daughter was stalled on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, because of the absence of prosecution witnesses.

Orekoya was first arraigned on February 27, before Justice Abiola Soladoye on a two-count charge of defilement and sexual assault by penetration in 2017 in the Itire area of Surulere, Lagos.

NAN reports that the prosecution also told the court that the pastor allegedly defiled his daughter by inserting his fingers into her vagina and also by inserting his penis into her mouth contrary to the Criminal Laws of Lagos State (2015).

The pastor pleaded not guilty to the charges.

At the resumption of hearing on Wednesday, the prosecuting State Counsel, Mr Olusola Soneye, told the court that his three witnesses could not make it to court.

He explained that he reached out to the witnesses on Tuesday and that they promised to be pre-sent in court.

Soneye then asked for an adjournment to which the defence counsel did not object.

Justice Soladoye adjourned to June 5.

  • U.S. Bars Four Ex-Malawi Officials From Entry Over Corruption, To Also Disallow Their Spouses

The United States has barred four former officials of the Malawi government from entry, the State Department said on Wednesday.

It said the decision was based on their involvement in significant corruption.

The Department of State announced on Wednesday that the public designations of former Solicitor General and Principal Secretary of Justice Reyneck Matemba, former Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Agency Director John Suzi-Banda, former Malawi Police Service Attorney Mwabi Kaluba, and former Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service George Kainja, as generally ineligible for entry into the US, due to their involvement in significant corruption.

The State Department said Matemba, Suzi-Banda, Kaluba, and Kainja abused their public positions by accepting bribes and other articles of value from a private businessperson in exchange for awarding a government procurement contract for the Malawi Police Service.

It said, “The United States stands with Malawians working towards a more just and prosperous nation by promoting accountability for corrupt officials, including advocating for transparency and integrity in government procurement processes.

“These designations reaffirm the United States’ commitment to counter corruption, which stifles economic growth and development, hinders investment, and erodes trust in government.

“These public designations are made under Section 7031(c) of the annual Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024 (Div. F, P.L. 118-47).”

The Department said it was also designating Matemba’s spouse, Rhoda Violet Matemba Maxwell; Suzi-Banda’s spouse, Mariana Ismael Suzi-Banda; Kaluba’s spouse, Bernadette Mwangosi; and Kainja’s spouse, Jacqueline de Silva Kainja, as generally ineligible for entry into the United States.

  • Meta Board set to rule on explicit AI-generated images of public figures posted on Instagram, Facebook

The Board of Meta (formerly the Facebook company) is set to rule on two cases that deal with explicit AI-made images of public figures posted on both Instagram and Facebook.

The semi-independent policy council of Meta, the Oversight Board, is now focusing on the way the company’s social media platforms are managing explicit photos created by artificial intelligence.

Additionally, it disclosed that two distinct situations involving the handling of AI-generated photographs of public figures by Facebook in the United States and Instagram in India were being investigated after Meta’s algorithms failed to identify and address the explicit content.

“Meta’s policies and its enforcement practices are effective at addressing explicit AI-generated imagery,” the board stated in a statement released on Tuesday.

In an attempt to prevent more harassment, the Oversight Board stated that it is not disclosing the identities of the two prominent figures at the center of each instance, but it did detail the circumstances behind each post.

AI-generated photos of female celebrities, politicians, and other public figures, also known as “deepfake p*rn,” have grown in popularity as a form of online harassment and have sparked a wave of suggested regulations.

  • Days Of ‘The End Justifies The Means’ Is Over In Governance – Fashola

    Babatunde-Fashola

A former Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has said that the days of “the end justifies the means” is no longer a standard practice in governance in this era.

He noted that a leader must do the right thing even if the consequences do not go down well with the population.

Fashola spoke on Wednesday at the first Lagos Leadership Summit, organised by Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA).

The former Lagos State governor said that any policy, project or programme of interest to the generality of the people, should be implemented by the government irrespective of oppositions or consequences.

He said: “Days of the end justifies the means can no longer be the gold standard for governance any more. The process must be as important as the result. I subscribe to enjoyment after adversity because I have had introspection on every sustainable success story we have had, not one of them had not been built on the foundation of adversity.

“Therefore, if the utilitarian value of any policy, project or programme being pursued by the government serves the greatest good to the greatest number of people, then the leadership must go for it regardless of the consequences. In years to come, many people would look back and say it was better that we did it the way it was done.”

Also speaking at the event, with the theme: “Leadership and Nigeria’s Future”, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of character and competence in leadership.

He said the summit was initiated with the objective to create an engaging platform for young people to channel their energy, knowledge and creativity to actions that would project their leadership skills.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We believe young people are leaders not only for tomorrow, but today. This idea gave birth to Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy through which we provide opportunities for young leaders to learn, innovate and develop skills that will enable them hone their leadership skills.

“For us, it is not about the contemporary challenges that we face; it is about the innovative ideas and solutions that we will bring about in solving the problems. That is why we all gather here to make you think out of the box, innovate and unleash your leadership potential.

“The quality of output from the Academy has not only shown us that we took the right step, the feedback has been outstanding and we are prepared to create more platforms for robust youth engagement. The country is banking its future on the youth. Character is critical; young people must have the competence and vision to make the changes you want to see.”

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, noted that foundation for building a consensus in the community had been jettisoned for individualism.

He said: “The older generation inherited a robust community engagement model that pursued the agenda of the collective. Today, the foundation for engagement is weak and people have moved towards individualism, which has eroded the values of collectivism entrenched in our culture and civilisation.

“In trying to bridge the gap and create robust community engagement, technologies have given us the speed and instantaneous power to drive change within our communities today. We must continue to aggregate what is positive and use it for the best of our communities.”

On her part, Executive Secretary of LJLA, Mrs. Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, said the summit aimed to forge connections between the old and new generation.

“Our world is evolving at an unprecedented pace and the challenges we face require leaders who are not only capable but compassionate, visionary and adaptable. We believe leadership must transcend rhetoric and manifest tangible outcomes. We need leaders who inspire confidence, foster unity, and drive transformation,” she said.
