  • Hope For Increase Crude Oil Production Rises As NNPC Ltd, First E&P Achieve 20,000BPD At OML 85

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and its Joint Venture partner in OML 85, First Exploration and Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P), have commenced oil production from the asset, also known as Madu Field.

Production from the field which is located in shallow waters offshore Bayelsa State and operated by First E&P is expected to be at an average of 20,000 barrels per day.

The achievement is a testament to the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to optimise production from the nation’s oil and gas assets through the provision of an enabling environment for existing and prospective investors.

The development comes amidst the improvement in crude production for Africa’s most populous economy. According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, crude oil production is around 1.45 million barrels per day.

The country is expected to meet its 1.7 million bpd production benchmark for the 2024 budget of N27.5tn as crude oil theft and vandalism are being tamed by the NNPCL and its security partners

Speaking on the development, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, described the commencement of oil production at the Madu Field as a significant milestone that will contribute to the larger goal of meeting the production required to drive revenue growth and boost the nation’s economy.

Kyari, who commended stakeholders for their support, also explained that the addition of 20,000 barrels per day by an indigenous oil player signals the commitment of stakeholders to achieving economic development for Nigeria.

It would be recalled that the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the development of the Madu Field and a sister field, Anyala, was taken by the NNPC Ltd./First E&P JV in 2018.

Production from the Madu Field will be processed at the JV’s Abigail-Joseph Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Unit, which has a crude oil storage capacity of up to 800,000 bbls.

OML 85 has four fields namely Madu, Songhai, Ato-North and Ato-South. Significant oil, gas and condensate resources have been confirmed across multiple-stacked reservoirs in the Madu field.

  • Beijing half-marathon top three are stripped of their medals after three African race leaders appeared to slow down before the finish line to let Chinese runner win

Update: Beijing half-marathon top three are stripped of their medals after three African race leaders appeared to slow down before the finish line to let Chineserunnerwin

The top three in the Beijing half-marathon have had their medals stripped after three African race leaders appeared to slow down before the finish line to let a Chinese runner win.

According to Reuters, winner He Jie and three African runners had their results cancelled after an investigation found that the trio allowed the Chinese athlete to finish first.

He had won the race in China’s capital with a time of 1:03.44, ahead of Ethiopian Dejene Hailu Bikila and Kenyans Robert Keter and Willy Mnangat who all finished joint second.

The organising committee said in a statement that the three African runners ‘actively slowed down in the last two kilometres and as a result, He Jie won the men’s championship.’

They added that the ‘trophies, medals and bonuses will be recovered.’

Mnangat, reportedly told the BBC that the trio ran as pacemakers along with another runner who did not finish the race.

The Kenyan allegedly claimed that they had been contracted to help He break the Chinese half-marathon record of 1:02:33, something he was not able to accomplish.

He said: ‘I was not there to compete. It was not a competitive race for me.’

‘I don’t know why they put my name on my bib/chest number instead of labelling it as a pacemaker,’ Mnangat added.

‘My job was to set the pace and help the guy win but unfortunately, he did not achieve the target, which was to break the national record.’

The Zhongao Lupao Beijing Sports Management company said its partner Xiamen Xtep Investment failed to note the relevant pacer information, which led to the organising committee not being informed.

‘Our company has unshirkable responsibility and would like to experience our sincere apologies to all runners,’ Xtep said in a statement as per Reuters.

‘We bear a great responsibility and fully accept the punishment decision made by the organising committee.’

  • Kanayo O Kanayo berates modern-day actors, says they have ‘no sense of purpose’

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O Kanayo has taken to his social media account to berate young actors in the movie industry ‘with no sense of purpose’.

In a video shared online, the vocal thespian predicted that YouTube would fail in Nigeria because of the way Nigerian performers had “rubbished” the platform.

He stated further in the video that producers aim to maximize the money invested by overworking new-age actors because majority of them demand exorbitant fees to appear in films.

’We built Nollywood brick by brick, block by block, but the guys who have besieged YouTube—the actors, not the producers—do not have any sense of purpose or process to create a procedure for lasting videography or creating content.

‘‘Take for instance, the whole irony of one-day shoot. It is not sustainable. Some of them now make it so difficult for producers. They tell you one-day shoot is N1 million or N1.5 million. It isn’t sustainable. Unfortunately, my very high-ranking colleague who started this one-day shoot is unfortunately not in good health.

‘‘Why? I know for everyone who gives you a job, they want it done. They pack you with enough to finish in one day. Thirty scenes, thirty-five scenes..Most of you think you are enjoying ‘I am fully booked for the next six months’ but your health…I hope you enjoy good health like those of us who started 38 years ago because what you are doing is not sustainable.

‘‘I bear you no malice. Earn all your money but the disservice you are doing to professionalism is not going to last long and the way I see it. YouTube is not going to last long in Nigeria as a platform.”

  • Delta State Govt Endorses Nigerian Journalist’s Book For School Use

The Delta State government through its Ministry of Education has endorsed a book written by a Nigerian journalist, Ejiro ‘LadyE’-Umukoro, for use in schools.

The book titled ‘Distortion’ was recognised and recommended for use in secondary schools by the government.

Announcing this great feat, Umukoro, also the publisher, LightRay Media and a United States Agency for Global Media ChangeMaker Award Winner, in a press statement personally issued by her on Friday, said her book, Distortion, was listed on the recommended textbooks for senior secondary schools (SS1-3) for literature in English, first term, in Delta state.

According to her, the endorsement “was signed by the Director of Education Research Centre, Kelly N. Kentoa, under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Asaba, Delta State.”

Umukoro expresses gratitude, saying, “I was humbled and thrilled by the recognition and honoured that my work will now reach Nigerian classrooms. Children’s voices matter. They are an important demographic that deserves to be recognised, protected, and inspired to greatness.”

It would be recalled that it was through Ejiro Umukoro’s investigative report and exposè on how Female Students in Delta State were being aggressively recruited by cultists, that inspired the Delta State Government’s Ministry of Education to declare a state of emergency on the growing menace.

With the proactive support of St. Patrick’s Church and Principals in secondary schools across Delta State alongside Umukoro, they were able to save over 150 teenagers aged 11 to 17 from being recruited into cultism, while ensuring that the young girls targeted are not used as rape victims for initiation rites.

Speaking about her motivation in writing the book, Umukoro said: “Growing up I experienced how literature of wide varieties can inspire thinking, ignite conversations, challenge prejudices, biases, intolerance, and stereotypes.

“It is my hope that ‘Distortion’ empowers students and adults alike to know that they have the power to say ‘No’ when they’re uncomfortable and have the courage to walk away from circumstances that diminish their worth as individuals.”

The book ‘Distortion’, is a prose that delves into the human mind and challenges, taboos around the Osu caste system, widowhood, baby-making factories, child trafficking, gender-based violence and the issues of mental health in a society that does not protect its own.

Set against the backdrop of Nigeria’s rich cultural belief systems, politics, religion, and family values, ‘Distortion’ is based on Umukoro’s experiences as an investigative journalist and media mentor, weaving together narratives of the individual against the state, a society at the verge of dysfunctionality and strewn with landmines, and ultimately the determination and quest for personal survival and self-fulfilment.

The Ministry’s endorsement of ‘Distortion’ marks a significant milestone for Umukoro, the Delta-born award-winning investigative journalist, whose literary prowess has come to the fore with this novel.

Umukoro explained that as part of the approved curriculum for secondary school students across Nigeria, this literary gem will inspire a generation of young minds to become critical thinkers who are empowered with knowledge on how to critique and not become victims of other people’s whims and manipulation.

“This approval and inclusion in the school curriculum also reflects the ministry’s commitment to fostering awareness on issues of gender-based violence, child rights, human rights, and the global awareness of these and more among students,” she said.

  • 6,000 Illicit Weapons Recovered, Destroyed Across Nigeria Between 2021 And 2023 –Arms Control Centre

At least 6,000 illicit and obsolete small arms and light weapons have been recovered and destroyed across Nigeria in efforts to stem the proliferation of small arms, the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), has said.

It said the weapons were recovered between 2021 and 2023.

The South-East zonal coordinator of NCCSALW, Gen. Okechukwu Ugo (rtd), disclosed this at a one-day seminar held in Enugu Thursday on how to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Ugo said the recovery of SALW had helped in ensuring that such arms do not get into the wrong hands to carry out militancy and insurgency.

According to him, his group is doing everything possible to free the nation from illicit arms through collaborations with regional and global partnerships.

“As at today, the Centre has recovered and destroyed over 6,000 illicit and obsolete SALW from various security agencies and operational theatres around the country.

“These recoveries and destruction exercises, which are in line with UN conventions, have contributed immensely to prevent the recycling of these illicit arms back into our society, thereby enhancing safety and security in Nigeria and globally,” he said.

He, however, explained that “the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, realizing the need for sub-regional, regional and global partnerships in this fight against the menace of illicit arms, has engaged and continues to engage various international stakeholders in the field.

“For instance, the Centre recently hosted representatives of all countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission to a two-day conference in Abuja to fashion out ways of sharing intelligence to ensure that cross-border trafficking and illicit trade of SALW are checkmated.”

“The Centre also participates in various regional and global fora on SALW under the auspices of ECOWAS, AU and UN regularly to ensure that Nigeria conforms to global best practices in this regard,” he said.

In a goodwill message at the occasion, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Gen. Hassan Dada, represented by the Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Gen. M. M. Abu said it was important that weapons are not left in the hands of unauthorised persons.

According to Dada, all hands should be on deck to recover small arms and light weapons from society.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, represented by Onyeamu Akame, while expressing dismay at the proliferation of illicit arms in the country, warned the political class to desist from arming the youths to execute elections.

  • Ogun to deploy drones on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, donates 25 vans to police

The Ogun State Government, on Thursday, said it has procured drones that will be used by security agencies in the state to monitor activities on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

This is as the state governor, Dapo Abiodun handed over 25 vans procured by the state to the police in the state.

Abiodun said the drones, to be operated by trained personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of Stata Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, would help to tackle criminal activities on the highway.
