  • Controversy As FCT Police Commissioner Denies Arrest Of Yahaya Bello’s ADC, Security Detail

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Commissioner, Benneth Igweh has refuted reports that the command has arrested and is detaining the Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the embattled former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello and other police officers attached to the on-the-run ex-governor.

CP Igweh disclosed this to THE WHISTLER on Saturday when contacted on reports revealing that the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) FCT, had detained Bello’s ADC and other police details withdrawn from him.

“The ADC was not arrested. It is not true,” CP Igweh simply said.

However, THE WHISTLER gathered that the female ADC was sighted at the police command heading to the SCID on Friday.

It is not certain if the female ADC was invited for questioning, detained or is expected to face an orderly room trial for not arresting Bello.

The development followed a directive by the Nigeria Police withdrawing all officers attached to Bello, following their alleged involvement in aiding his escape from operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday.

THE WHISTLER had contacted the Force Headquarters to confirm its involvement in her arrest, including that of other officers withdrawn from Bello, but its spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi has yet to respond to queries sent via a text message.

The text also sent via his WhatsApp contact showed being read but has not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.

The embattled former governor is being prosecuted over an N80.2bn money laundering case, by the EFCC.

THE WHISTLER reported how the sitting governor of the state, Usman Ododo helped Bello to escape from his residence in Abuja when operatives of the EFCC attempted to arrest him.

The EFCC further arraigned him before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, but the former governor failed to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite.

The agency, however, proceeded with the trial in absentia, arraigning Bello alongside three other suspects.

The former governor along with the suspects including Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman and Abdulsalem Hudu were arraigned on 19-count charges bordering on money laundering.

Consequently, the EFCC declared Bello a wanted person while the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) placed him on its watch list for conspiracy, breach of trust and money laundering.

The NIS also alerted the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and the Director of the National Intelligence Agency, requesting that Bello should be arrested if seen at any entry and exit point.

  • Nigerian Police Detain Ex-Governor Yahaya Bello’s Security Details For Aiding Escape From EFCC

The Nigeria Police Force has detained a female police officer who served as the aide-de-camp for former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello as well as other security details for aiding his escape from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.

The ADC was arrested, along with other police officers assigned to 48-year-old Bello, and they are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Their arrests and incarceration came after the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, issued an order on Thursday night requiring their immediate departure from the former governor.

Senior police sources, who spoke to PUNCH on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly on the matter, said the officers were arrested on suspicion of assisting Bello’s escape from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives who had gone to arrest him at his Abuja home on Wednesday.

“The ADC and the other police details attached to Yahaya Bello have been arrested and detained.

“They were arrested on the order of the IG, on the suspicion that they aided and abetted the former governor’s escape from the EFCC on Wednesday,” one of the sources said.

Another source said, “Yahaya Bello’s female ADC and other police officers attached to him were brought to the command this morning, and they’ve been detained for aiding and abetting (the governor’s escape).”

SaharaReporters had reported on Thursday night that the police withdrew the security details attached to Yahaya Bello.

The order for the withdrawal was contained in a Police Wireless Message obtained by SaharaReporters.

It read, “CB:4001/DOPS/PMF/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.48/ 34 X ORDER AND DIRECTIVES X FOLLOWING MESSAGE RECEIVED FROM NIGPOLD OPS ABUJA X BEGINS X CB:4001/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.21/462 DTO:180955/04/2024 X ORDER AND DIRECTIVES X REF MYLET NO CB:3412/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.1/36 DATED 15/04/2024 X AND MY EARLIER LET NO CB:3412/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.1/30 DATED 24/01/2024 X INGENPOL HAS ORDERED THE WITHDRAWAL OF ALL MEN

    COMPLIANCE PLEASE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.”

On Wednesday, some Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives barricaded Bello’s Abuja residence.

However, the current governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, intervened to prevent the arrest of the former governor of the state by the EFCC operatives.

Ododo’s team had escorted Bello out of the location in the governor’s vehicle.

Bello was also absent in court earlier on Thursday when the EFCC arraigned him.

His arraignment came after a warrant of arrest and enrolment order was granted to the EFCC by the court on Wednesday.

Subsequently, the agency declared Bello wanted for an alleged financial crime to the tune of N80.2 billion.

The commission said in a bulletin that “anybody with information as to his whereabout should report immediately to the Commission or the nearest police station.”

SaharaReporters earlier reported how EFCC asked all security agencies to place Bello on their watch list to prevent him from leaving the country “through any land, air or sea borders.”

Granting the request and circulating the EFCC directive, the Nigeria Immigration Service in an internal circular seen by SaharaReporters directed its area and zonal commands to arrest Bello if seen.

The circular stated that the former Kogi governor was under investigation and there was a suspicion that he might leave the country to evade investigations.

  • Ortom labels Melaye a ‘liability’ to PDP

In a scathing rebuke directed at former senator Dino Melaye, former Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has branded him a ‘liability’ to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Ortom’s remarks add fuel to the ongoing internal strife within the opposition party, shedding light on the divisions and tensions simmering beneath the surface.

Ortom launched this attack through a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Akase, following the verbal attack by Melaye on the former governor during the North Central Zonal meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Melaye had berated the former governor for his statement in Port Harcourt supporting the government of President Tinubu and accused him (Ortom) of anti-party activities during the 2023 general election.

Responding to Melaye’s verbal and social media attack, Ortom, in a statement titled, “Melaye: ‘A leopard won’t change its spots, time to graduate from thuggery’ described the senator as a ‘liability not only to PDP, but also to the good people of Kogi State.

“This is why the people rejected his bid to be their governor. In the last election, Dino could not even vote for himself. His rants and comedy often end up on social media. He makes no contributions to the party and instead drags its image to infamy with his acts of ignominy.”

Ortom’s comments underscore the growing discontent within the PDP ranks, with factions vying for control and influence ahead of upcoming elections.

Ortom’s characterization of Melaye as a liability to the party is likely to exacerbate existing rifts within the PDP, as supporters of both figures are left to navigate the fallout from the governor’s remarks. Melaye, a vocal and controversial figure in Nigerian politics, has yet to respond publicly to Ortom’s criticism.

The former governor’s statement may also signal broader tensions within the PDP as it seeks to consolidate its position as the main opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). With internal discord threatening to undermine party unity, leaders like Ortom face the challenge of balancing personal ambitions with the need for party cohesion.
