  • Enugu Community Celebrates Reinstatement Of Sacked Traditional Ruler Amidst Protest

Reinstated traditional ruler of Ishi-Ozalla Community, Igwe Sylvanus Okeke

The people of Ishi-Ozalla community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Monday, called for a strategic partnership among communities with the state government to sustain peace and provision of democratic dividends to the people.

The President General of the community, Mr Chinedu Orji, stated this while appreciating the Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, for reinstating the community’s ousted traditional ruler, Igwe Sylvanus Okeke.

Okeke was suspended in 2022 by the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Mr Orji said, “The reinstatement has given the community a sense of belonging. I urge all sons and daughters of our community to be in vanguard of peace for sustainable development.

“Our Igwe was suspended for no reason and since then, members of the community are not happy. But thank God today that the governor has called him back.”

The traditional Prime Minister of the community, Chief Ralph Ugwu, and a community leader, Mr Innocent Nwaoha- Obodo, commended the state government for listening to the voice of justice.

Ugwu said, “The get-together was to further express our loyalty with the traditional ruler and to thank the state government for the restatement.”

A member of Edeaniegu clan, Chief Chukwuma Nweke, pledged total support to Igwe Sylvanus Okeke. He advised aggrieved members of the community to consider the interest of the community.

He said, “Some interests should not drag the entire community into an unnecessary crisis. We are fully in support of Igwe Sylvanus Okeke.”

The reinstated traditional ruler commended his people for standing by him, and promised to rule his people with fear of God devoid of discrimination, segregation and oppression of any section or parts.

A faction of the community had last week rejected the reinstatement of the traditional ruler. They claimed that all the issues that resulted in his suspension had not been resolved.

According to the President General of Edeaniagu clan, Chief Uchenna Nweke, “The issue is not about reinstating the suspended Igwe. Ishi-Ozalla is currently divided into two: the Edeaniagu people have their own leader in the person of His Majesty, Chief Don Sylvester Chinedu Nweke, even before Igwe Okeke was coronated. You cannot ostracize such population in a community, bar them from participating in any community election and you expect them to still follow you.

“You suspend someone with reasons and when you reinstate him, what about those reasons for his suspension? Were they met?”

Also speaking, the Secretary General of the Clan, Chief Chris Uzochukwu, expressed surprise that the state made such pronouncement without looking at any of the reconciliatory options put in place by the past administration.

  • Rivers Assembly overrides Gov Fubara on LGA law, orders elections

In a move that signals a potential power struggle, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Monday, overrode Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s veto on a bill amending the state’s Local Government Law.

The new law strips the governor of the power to appoint caretaker committee chairmen for local government areas (LGAs) and mandates the conduct of LGA elections upon the expiration of current officials’ terms.

This is the first time the Assembly has overruled Governor Fubara, who took office on May 29 last year.

Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, argued that the governor’s veto indicated a reluctance to hold LGA elections. ”

” The key thing here is this law removes the power of the Governor to appoint caretaker committee chairmen,” he stated.

Amaewhule also informed the House that the governor had refused to sign an amendment to the local government law.

He added: “Members are already aware that we forwarded the amended bill to the governor for his assent on the 14th day of March and as it stands the government has chosen to withhold his assent by not getting back to us. So we are empowered by the constitution to make progress and where necessary override the governor’s assent. ”

The House deliberated on the development and the bill was then put into vote.

22 lawmakers voted for the House to veto the governor with none either against or abstaining.

Confirming the passage Mr Amaewhule said: “By this voting, the Rivers state Local Government Amendment law of 2018 is hereby passed for the second time and the assent of the governor is no longer required in line with section 100 subsection 5 of the 1999 Constitution as altered. The clerk will forward this law to the governor, the attorney general, and the Chief Judge of the state so they can do the needful”.

This power shift could significantly impact local governance in Rivers State.

It remains to be seen how Governor Fubara will respond. The legality of the Assembly’s override may be challenged, potentially leading to a court battle. This episode underscores a growing tension between the executive and legislative branches in Rivers State, with the implications for governance yet to be fully understood.

  • UNREDEEMED PRIZES: Phyna rallies Nigerians against BBNaija sponsors

The winner of the 2022 edition of the Big Brother Naija (BBN) “Level Up” edition, Josephine Ijeoma Otabor aka Phyna, has once again rallied support from Nigerians against the organisers of the much-followed reality TV show.

In a message published on Saturday on her official X Twitter, the reality TV actress urged Nigerians join her in the fights to get her prizes from the show organisers.

Phyna wondered why Nigerians have not spoken up about the organisers failure to fulfill their promise.

She asked the citizens to take action now rather than waiting until injustice victims were no longer alive.

    She wrote:

“Just thinking out loud……… A very big organisation is making me go through stress of not getting my prices as promised since 2022…. And Nigerians are yet to say anything because is PHYNA!!!!.
