  • Court Adjourns Hearing on Binance Executive’s Bail Application

Court Adjourns Hearing on Binance Executive’s Bail Application

Court Adjourns Hearing on Binance Executive’s Bail Application

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 adjourned hearing on the bail application of Binance Holdings Limited and its executive, Tigran Gambaryan till May 17, 2024.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC is prosecuting Gambaryan alongside Binance Holdings Ltd and Nadeem Anjarwalla, (currently at large) on five-count charges bordering on alleged tax evasion, currency speculation and money laundering to tune of $34,400,000 (Thirty-Four Million, Four Hundred Thousand United States Dollars).

The court had on Thursday, April 18, 2024 adjourned trial till Tuesday for prosecution counsel, Mr Ekele Eheanacho to respond to a bail application filed by the defence counsel, Mark Mordi (SAN).

At Tuesday’s proceedings, Mordi argued that the court had the power to grant bail to the defendant and impose conditions to ensure his presence in court.

“My lord, we have an application filed on April 4, 2024, supported by a 17-paragraph affidavit. We rely on all depositions found in the affidavit. There are four reasons why my lord should grant us bail. Pursuant to Section 157 and 52 of ACJA, my Lord has the power to grant bail. It is not a capital offence or felony,” Mordi said.

However, Eheanacho opposed the bail application, stating that the defendant is a flight risk. “The defendant attempted to obtain a new passport, which he claimed was stolen, and this was a suspicious act given the proximity to his colleague’s escape from custody. We cannot risk granting him bail, especially since he is not attached to any community in Nigeria,” he said.

Arguing further, Iheanacho stated that “the fact that the passport of the defendant is with the complainant does not guarantee that he will remain in Nigeria, because the defendant is not only an American citizen but also an Armenian citizen by birth. We are urging the honourable court to refuse the application and instead remand him in EFCC custody to ensure his safety and prevent potential flight risk.”

In response to this, Mordi argued that the defendant posed no flight risk and that the prosecution was not certain that the defendant has an Armenian passport, adding that “Moreover, there is no Armenian Embassy in Nigeria that issues or prints passports.”

After listening to the submissions, the court adjourned the matter till May 17, 2024, for ruling on the bail application.

  • Arsenal Defeat Chelsea 5-0 To Boost Premier League Title Hopes

Arsenal's Leandro Trossard On Target Against Chelsea

Arsenal recorded a comfortable 5-0 win over disappointing Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night to boost their Premier League title hopes.

Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto missed out for Chelsea, while Arteta handed Thomas Partey a rare start.

The Gunners enjoyed a blistering night in front of their fans with a sensational performance against a shambolic Chelsea side, who were bereft of ideas with the absence of Cole Palmer.

Leandro Trossard opened the scoring for Arsenal with a superb close range finish in the fourth minute.

Chelsea had some half chances but they couldn’t convert and they ended the first half without a shot in target.

The Gunners started the second half with purpose and intent. Ben White increased their
lead in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0.

Former Chelsea star, Kai Havertz produced a stunning finish to make it 3-0 seven minutes later.

He added his second goal of the night with a low drive in the box following a good work from Bukayo Saka to stun his former employers.

Havertz has now scored seven goals and recorded four assists in his last 10 Premier League games.

Ben White also completed his brace in the 70th minute from Martin Odegaard’s assist to make it 5-0 against a shell-shocked Chelsea side lacking ideas.

The Gunners produced arguably their best performance of the season against their London rivals to further underline their title credentials and condemned Pochettino’s men to an embarrassing loss.

Arsenal are now three points clear of second-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand, while Manchester City are in the third position with two outstanding games.

Manchester City will be back in action against Brighton on Thursday at the Amex Stadium, while Liverpool makes a short trip to Everton on Wednesday night.

Mikel Arteta’s men will hope to continue their flourishing form when they travel to Tottenham on Sunday.

  • Why we started the Global Family Finance Conference

“A few years ago, I was financially down, and things got really tough to a point where my wife suggested I go get a job.

I didn’t blame her because it was almost unbearable. Today, we are both grateful I didn’t quit.

I’m especially grateful that I am now able to take care of my amazing wife and kids. Even when I’m not around, they are well taken care of.

In fact, it is now an overflow to the extent that we now support family businesses with grants.

The truth is, you can’t get wealthy by mistake. It takes a lot of effort, but most importantly, it takes the right strategy to get there.

One of the most important strategies you’re going to need to take you and your family out of poverty is to be disciplined with your money.

You don’t try to impress people you don’t like with money you don’t have.

The rate of poverty in the black community is alarming because of a lack of financial literacy, and this is negatively affecting a lot of marriages.

This is why I’m putting together the Global Family Finance Conference. This conference is going to expose you on how to manage your money and create financial freedom.

I’ve invited some amazing speakers to join me and I can guarantee you that this conference is going to tremendously change how you look at money.

  • N80Billion Fraud: I Personally Invited Yahaya Bello To My Office For Interview, He Said My Operatives Should Come To His Village –EFCC Chairman, Olukoyede

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that he personally called former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello to his office in Abuja for an interview over the alleged N80 billion fraud but he (Bello) asked EFCC operatives to come to his village to interview him.

Olukoyede disclosed that Bello sent his Government House cashier to withdraw money from the government account, took it directly to Bureau de Change and sent it to the American International School, Abuja for the payment of his children’s tuition in advance.

SaharaReporters in December 2023 exclusively reported that EFCC seized the $760,910.84 Bello paid to American International School, Abuja, as school fees in advance for his four children until graduation.

Documents obtained by SaharaReporters had shown that Bello through his nephew, Mr Ali Bello, had entered an agreement with the school to pay tuition for his four children up to graduation in advance to secure their future.

The agreement was signed and executed on August 23, 2021. Following the execution of the agreement, a total of $845.852.84 was paid into the school account in varied instalments.

However, the anti-corruption agency as part of its oversight function, subsequently invited the school authorities for a series of interviews connected with the funds through a letter dated September 7, 2023, after about one year.

SaharaReporters also reported on April 18 that the anti-corruption agency had filed 19 criminal counts before a Federal High Court in Abuja against the former governor bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

The charge filed at the Federal High Court 9, with charge FHC/ABJ/CR/98/2024, dated March 9, 2024, has Yahaya Adoza Bello as the sole Defendant while the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the complainant.

The EFCC in the charge papers obtained by SaharaReporters, accused the ex-governor of conversion of a total of N80,246,470,089.88 being funds belonging to the Kogi State government in February 2016 to himself, an offence which is contrary to Section 18(a) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended.

Bello was also accused of indirectly using one Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman and Abdulsalam Hudu to use the sum of N950 million being proceeds of crime for the acquisition of a property at No. 35 Danube Street, Maitama District, Abuja.

On Tuesday, the EFCC boss said that the government house cashier took the billions of naira from the government account to a Bureau de Change to convert to dollars to pay the money to Bello’s children’s school.

Addressing editors during an interactive session in Abuja, Olukoyede said, “A sitting governor; because he knows his ways, he moved money. The particulars of the offence are there. Go and check it. Apply for our processes.

“He moved money directly from the government account to Bureau de Change, used to pay the child’s school fees in advance in dollars – $720,000 in advance as long as he was going to leave the government house in a poor state like Kogi.

“And you want me to close my eyes to that under the guise that I’m being used. Used by who at this stage of my life?

“I assumed office, I didn’t initiate the case. I inherited the case file. I called for the case file and for the report, and I said, there are issues here.

“On my own honour, I put a call across to him, which ordinarily I’m not supposed to do, just to honour him as the immediate past governor. I told him, ‘Sir, there are issues. I have seen this case file, can you just come? Let us clarify these issues.’

“He said, ‘I thank you, my brother. I know but I can’t come.’ That there was one lady, I think a Senator, whom he learned had surrounded EFCC with over 100 journalists to embarrass him and intimidate him.

“I said if that is your fear, I’m going to pass you through my own gate, a special man’s gate, you will come to my floor. We will accord you that respect. I will invite my operatives and they will interview you in my own office.

“What could be more honourable than that? But he said, ‘Thank you, sir. I appreciate but can’t they come to my village?’ That is what he told me. ‘Can’t they come to my village to interview me?’

“He also sent a message to my driver. Some people say we are hounding him, we are harassing him. Let’s be fair to EFCC.”

  • ‘African drama’ – Ganduje dismisses purported suspension from APC

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, on Tuesday described his purported suspension from the party by some individuals in his Kano State ward as an African drama aimed at causing distractions.

Ganduje said this when he received members of the Forum of the States APC Chairman in Abuja.

The APC ward executives in Ganduje ward, Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano State had earlier this month suspended the former governor following a move by the state government to arraign him in court for alleged corruption.

He said: “This is African drama, and it is not leading political parties to anywhere, there is no doubt that what happened was a distraction but we assure you that our party cannot be distracted or diverted.

“We are focused, we know where we are heading to, we know our objectives and we know how to achieve them.

“That is why we have the president, more state governors, and more senators in our party, and more are coming into our fold.”

He charged the state chairmen to remain focused, saying the party under his leadership had introduced innovations to make it a strong institution.

Earlier in his remark, the Secretary of the Forum of APC State Chairmen, Mr. Alphonsus Okadigbo, said the visit was to identify with Ganduje and affirm their support for him.

He said: “We are here to show loyalty and solidarity to your leadership and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and to tell members of the public that we are solidly behind you.

“We are sure that you are on course on the steps you have taken to reposition our party and to take it to greater heights.”

  • Power Reform: 45% of Nigerians Have No Access To Electricity – VP Shittima

    FG-ALAT-Target-3-Million-Small-Businesses-In-State-States-For-‘Skillnovation-1

Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima on Tuesday said less than 20 per cent of Nigerians have access to reliable energy for more than 12 hours per day and 45 Per cent have no access to any form of electricity.

The Vice President noted that as a consequence, households and industries have been dependent on self-generation which is both more expensive and more polluting.

The Vice President disclosed this at a power sector stakeholders interactive dialogue/workshop organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Power with the theme ‘Confronting Nigeria’s Power Challenge as the Nation Migrates to a Multi-tier Electricity Market: A Legislative Intervention’.

The Former Senator who was represented by Sadiq Wanka, said the dialogue was timely as there is widespread recognition that the country is underperforming across all four pillars of providing electricity supply that is reliable, affordable, environmentally sustainable, and available to all Nigerians.

He also urged states to attract investors in the electricity sector to recapitalise distribution companies and ensure a steady flow of investments towards increasing electricity access.

The Electricity Act 2023, proposes a structure that promotes more competition and greater scope for tailoring power solutions to local needs while transitioning to a market structure that would attract much-needed investments and promote environmental sustainability.

“The wholesale structural shift that the Electricity Act 2023 (as amended) and the associated constitutional amendment usher in, means we need to double down on ensuring an orderly transition to the new national electricity market framework,” he said.

Shettima lauded the National Assembly for its steadfastness in leading the conversation on an orderly transition and for demonstrating a willingness to review the recently passed Electricity Act as needed.

On his part, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed plans by the Federal Government to revamp the sector noting that three gigawatts of solar energy farms would be established across the 25 states in the north and southwest parts of the country.

The minister disclosed this during his presentation at the power sector stakeholders interactive dialogue/workshop organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Power.

Adelabu, who said this is a novel approach and will go a long way to solve the power problems, also encouraged state governments to invest in power generation in their states.

The minister said the country has witnessed incessant collapse of transmission which is caused by lack of adequate infrastructure.

“Most of the power generating infrastructures we have dates back to the 1960s.

“Unfortunately, there is no single backup for the national grid, and he called for alternative sources in case of a collapse of the grid,” the minister said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, lauded the Committee for their commitment and leadership in spearheading the legislative framework that supports the transformative agenda of the President.

This, he said, is in line with our Legislative Agenda, which prioritises economic growth and transformation of key sectors of the economy, especially power.

Abbas however said, “The forum and extensive consultations would have preceded the implementation of the new multi-tier electricity system.”

“Having the consultation now appears to be an afterthought and goes contrary to the Electricity Act of 2024, which mandates consultation with all relevant stakeholders in determining just and fair tariffs.”

“The government’s objective is to foster a resilient, efficient, and sustainable power sector capable of supporting our nation’s ambitious economic and developmental goals.”

“The speaker said the shift towards a multi-tier electricity market represents a strategic pivot in the approach to power sector reform.”

This model, he said, ” Envisages a structured market segmentation that allows for differential pricing and service levels tailored to diverse consumer needs and capacities.”

“It promises enhanced efficiency through competitive practices, encourages investment by delineating clear market segments, and improves reliability and service delivery across the board.

“In framing the way forward, they can look towards best practices and successful models from other countries that have implemented similar market structures.

He added that phased implementation that involves the graduate introduction of market tiers allows for adjustments and learning.

Abbas said continuous engagement with all stakeholders is critical to ensuring that the reforms meet the diverse needs of the population and maintain public trust.

Chairman of the committee, Hon Victor Nwokolo, said the aim was to provide a dynamic platform for stakeholders to evaluate the progress made thus far in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI)’s development.

He said discussions will centre around the seamless transition to a Multi-Tier Electricity Market, as outlined in the Electricity Act of 2023.

This transition, he said, holds immense potential to enhance competition, efficiency, and reliability within the electricity market, ultimately benefiting consumers and driving economic growth.

“Through collaborative brainstorming and analysis, we aim to chart a clear roadmap for this transition, ensuring that it is smooth, inclusive, and conducive to sustainable development.

“Furthermore, this workshop will serve as a platform for stakeholders to explore innovative solutions to the persistent challenges plaguing the power sector.

“From infrastructure development and financing to regulatory frameworks and consumer engagement, we will examine a wide array of issues and propose actionable strategies for improvement.

“In addition to these objectives, we aspire for this workshop to foster enhanced collaboration and partnership among stakeholders. By bringing together legislators, representatives from government agencies, regulatory bodies, industry players, academia, and civil society, we aim to cultivate a culture of cooperation and collective action towards our shared goal of a vibrant and resilient power sector,” he said.
