  • Punish my abusers within 48 hours or face lawsuit

The bullied student of British Lead International School, Miss. Namtira Bwala has threatened to file a lawsuit against the school authorities if her abusers are not punished within 48 hours.

In a letter drafted by her lawyers, Deji Adeyanju and Co, Namtira asked the school authorities to immediately investigate and pronounce the stiffest punishments in the student’s rule book on Ms.Maryam Hassan, Miss Faliya, and nine other students who bullied her.

Namtira said if the school authorities fail to sanction the student bullies within 48 hours of the receipt of the letter, she would seek immediate and severe legal redress against the school.

“We are Solicitors to Miss. Namtira Bwala (acting through her next friend), hereinafter referred to as our client, on whose instruction we act.

Our client and several other parents in Lead British International School have informed us and we verily believe them that this act of bullying is a reoccurring issue in the school, and despite several attempts to draw the school’s attention to it, the issue has persisted, leaving our client traumatised from the emotional and physical effect of the oppressive acts by these dare devil bullies.

Regrettably, our client has once again, been subjected to physical attacks in the hands of these bullies, with the video of the act going viral on social media.

Sadly, rather than address this issue head-on by imposing severe sanctions on the student bullies, the school has issued a timid statement lacking in force or recognition of the severity of the situation at hand.

Our client completely dissociate herself from the statement issued by the school on April 22, 2024 wherein a case of battery was unconscionably referred to as an “incident between minors.

We state that it is this type of statements, coupled with the school’s gross negligence, that has enabled the student bullies, leading to increased incidents of unchecked bullying in the school, an environment that should ordinarily be a safe space for students.

Sequel to the foregoing, we have our client’s instruction to demand for the immediate investigation and the pronouncement of the stiffest possible sanctions in the student’s rule book, on Ms. Maryam Hassan, Miss Faliya and nine other students who have formed a cult of bullies in Lead British International School, Gwarimpa, Abuja.

Please note that if the school fails to sanction the student bullies within 48 hours of the receipt of this letter, we have our client’s further instruction to seek an immediate and severe legal redress against Lead British International School, Gwarimpa, without further recourse to you.””

  • Under the law, once a father acknowledges a child, no third party can contest it

Under the law, once a father acknowledges a child, no third party can contest it - Nigerian lawyer says as she calls Mohbad?s father a ??busybody

As the controversy over the paternity of Liam, the only child of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad continues, a Nigerian family lawyer, Onifade Olamide, has said that under the law, once a man acknowledges a child as his, no third party has the right to contest the paternity of the child.

Joseph Aloba who is the father of the late singer has been demanding a DNA test be conducted to ascertain if Liam is indeed his grandson. His stance has generated reactions with many supporting him and others against him.

While speaking on TVC recently. Onifade said during his lifetime, Mohbad acknowledged Liam as his so nobody can contest it now. She argued that the court can never grant Mr Aloba’s request for a DNA test to be done since he is a third party in the matter.

‘’Under the law, when a man and a woman are married, any child they have, there is something called ‘Presumption of Legitimacy meaning that the man is the biological father of the child. That is what the law says except you can now prove it that the child is not the man’s own.

In this case, Mohbad during his life time acknowledged the child as his own. Once a man acknowledges a child, no third party can come contest it. The third party who is the grandfather who is a busybody because the son said this is my child until his death.

If he goes to the court to demand for a DNA, the court will ask him to file an affidavit stating the reason why he wants a DNA test done and he has to give very cogent reasons. Now the person to dispute paternity must be in the proceedings. Now the person to dispute paternity is dead. ‘’

  • Ex-IGP, Ehindero, disagrees with police boss, Egbetokun, on state police

ICPC re-arraigns ex-Police IG Ehindero over alleged fraud

A former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, has differed with the current IGP, Kayode Egbetokun’s opinion that Nigeria is not mature enough for state police.

Ehindero, on Tuesday in a paper entitled: “It is time for state police in Nigeria,” averred that “The issue of creation of state police is a national issue of public interest surpassing sectoral interest.”

However, Egbetokun, who spoke on Monday at a national dialogue on state police organised by the Nigerian’s House of Representatives in Abuja, stated that “It is the submission of the leadership of the Nigeria police force that Nigeria is yet to mature for the establishment of state-controlled police.”

He warned that it was prone to abuse coupled with the fact that most states are bereft of the needed funds to finance it.

However, Ehindero who spoke about the merits and challenges associated with establishment of state police in his paper, said, the grounds for the opposition to state police by and large, have been taken care of.

“Now, to the reasons for and against state police. First, the need to control crimes. It has consistently been argued that policing is essentially a local affair and as most crimes are local, we need a local police force. We all know that most crimes are not local.

“Crimes such as terrorism, trafficking in drugs and human persons, money laundering, kidnappings, armed robbery, herdsmen/farmers’ clash are not local. They are national, international, and trans-border crimes.

“But our experience in the past was such that Local Government Police and Native Authority Police were used to subvert the democratic process.

“The state police was used and manipulated by politicians to intimidate, prosecute, and suppress perceived political opponents. How about the conduct and results of local government elections in the states where the party in power in the state wins all the elections.

“Moreover, police are too expensive to be left in the hands of the states. Apart from Lagos, Kano, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and some few states, others are unable to pay salaries of workers.“What of the multiple costs associated with the maintenance of 36 police forces and the FCT, each force pursuing the same issues as recruitment, training and financing.

“But soon after, the Federal Government provided a template of the state police within the federal police structure. That was a game changer.

“This is remarkable. The overwhelming powers of the Federal Government to intervene in States matters have been curtailed.

“In effect, the grounds for the opposition to state police by and large, have been taken care of.

“The Federal Police has been retained to take care of national and trans border crimes amongst others.

“It is also expected that these amendments will be panacea to crimes of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and robberies provided police at federal and state levels are numerically improved, well equipped, trained, motivated, and allowed to perform their internal security duties.

“Be informed that the state police will bear firearms. With them being armed less will be required of the military. Too much military visibility in internal security matters is not good for our nascent democracy.”

The issue of state police again came back to national limelight following the spate in kidnapping, banditry, militancy and other forms of criminality across different parts of the country.

However, former President Goodluck Jonathan; Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Emeritus Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan; and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi among others have all endorsed the call for state police.
